00:00In 1815, France, the story begins with Officer Javert observing a group of prisoners moving a large ship with ropes.
00:08After they finish, Javert asks Prisoner Jean to retrieve the ship's flag.
00:13To everyone's surprise, Jean demonstrates incredible strength by lifting the mast and placing it at Javert's feet.
00:20The officer then announces that Jean's parole has begun, but only refers to him by his prisoner number.
00:27Jean had stolen bread for his sister's dying baby and was sentenced to five years,
00:32but his sentence was increased to 19 years due to multiple escape attempts.
00:37He believes he is free, but Javert explains it's only parole and hands him the papers proving it.
00:44He must carry these papers and show them when asked, or he'll be rearrested.
00:50After this, Jean wanders, looking for a place to stay.
00:53No one will hire him because of his parole papers, and he's expelled from every town, seen as a dangerous man.
01:01Even when he tries to sleep in a humble stable, he's thrown out.
01:05Jean tries to sleep inside a church and is found by a kind bishop, who invites him to dinner and offers him a room.
01:12Jean is happy with the good food, but after the bishop goes to sleep, he steals all the silver he finds and flees.
01:19The next morning, the police bring Jean back to the church and inform the bishop he was caught with stolen items.
01:28However, the bishop lies to save Jean, saying the items were a gift and even gives him more candlesticks.
01:35After the police leave, the bishop tells Jean he must use the silver to start a new, honest life.
01:41Jean, moved by the bishop's kindness, realizes he stole again because that's all he knew how to do.
01:48From then on, he decides to be a better man under a new identity.
01:53Jean also destroys his parole papers, throwing them off a cliff.
01:57Eight years later, in a factory, the foreman harasses the working women, especially Fantine.
02:04The other women judge her for this.
02:06One day, they realize Fantine has a letter, so they steal it and discover she has an illegitimate daughter named Cosette.
02:15This causes a fight, but Jean arrives and breaks it up.
02:20Under a new name, Jean is now the factory owner and mayor of the city.
02:24He calms everyone down, but is surprised to see Javert at the window.
02:30Jean lets the foreman handle the problem with the workers.
02:32The women call Fantine every offensive name for having an illegitimate daughter.
02:39Fantine tries to explain she's not promiscuous, that she only had a boyfriend, who abandoned her.
02:45The foreman harasses her again, and when Fantine slaps him, he is fired.
02:51Fantine tries to seek help from Jean, but the foreman throws her out.
02:56Meanwhile, Jean notices something strange, but is busy observing the police near the factory.
03:01Jean, now chief of police, came only to deliver some documents.
03:06He doesn't recognize Jean, but his face seems familiar.
03:10At that moment, they hear screams outside, and Jean rushes out to discover a man trapped under a cart.
03:17Jean uses his strength to rescue the man, and Jean becomes suspicious.
03:22Jean remembers the prisoner he released eight years ago, who broke parole and disappeared.
03:27Since he has no proof, he keeps his suspicions to himself.
03:33That night, Fantine begins to look for ways to earn money to send to her daughter.
03:38First, she sells her locket with her daughter's photo, then her hair, and even some teeth.
03:44That's still not enough, so she has no choice but to become a sex worker.
03:48Life on the streets begins to affect her health.
03:52After some nights of work, a client becomes aggressive, and Fantine defends herself.
03:58The client calls the police, and Javert appears to arrest her.
04:02Jean recognizes her, and Fantine accuses him of allowing the foreman to throw her out.
04:08She tells him about her daughter, who is very ill.
04:11Moved by guilt, Jean takes Fantine in his arms to carry her to the hospital, promising to rescue her daughter as well.
04:19Sometime later, Javert receives an important letter from Paris, reporting that the prisoner he was looking for has been arrested.
04:27Javert goes to see Jean and apologizes for suspecting him, saying he deserves to be punished.
04:33However, Jean forgives him, stating that Javert was only doing his job.
04:38The rest of the day, Jean feels tormented by the idea that an innocent man has been arrested in his place,
04:45and that night, he decides to reveal his identity to the court, mentioning his prisoner number as proof.
04:52No one believes him, so Jean suggests they ask Javert before being expelled from the court.
04:58Then Jean goes to the hospital to see Fantine, who with a fever begins to hallucinate about her daughter.
05:04Jean comforts her, telling her he will take good care of the girl and give her a good life.
05:11With that, Fantine finds peace and finally dies.
05:15At that moment, Javert appears to arrest Jean, who refuses to surrender and takes a piece of wood to defend himself from Javert's sword.
05:24Unfortunately, Jean cannot compete with a trained policeman.
05:27He is disarmed and decides to escape by jumping into the river.
05:31Meanwhile, Cosette, Fantine's daughter, lives in a boarding house under the care of the owners, monsieur and madame Thénardier.
05:40She is not really sick.
05:41The Thénardier keep her as a servant and write lies to Fantine, asking for more money.
05:47The couple is incredibly cruel, mistreating Cosette and treating their own daughter like a princess.
05:52In addition, the Thénardier rob distracted customers and prepare food with suspicious ingredients like stray cats.
06:01That night, Jean goes to the boarding house and informs Cosette that her mother has died, telling her she must go with him.
06:09The Thénardier refuse to let her go, pretending they love her like a daughter and spent a lot of money on medicine for her.
06:17Jean agrees to pay Fantine's debt and also gives some extra money so that the Thénardier will allow Cosette to leave with him.
06:26After Jean and the girl leave, Javert appears looking for both, and the Thénardier realize they could have extorted more money from Jean.
06:35Shortly after, Jean and Cosette's cart is stopped at the city gates, where police ask for documents.
06:41The two immediately flee, while Javert pursues them through the streets, repeating Jean's prisoner number.
06:49Jean finds a rope and uses it to climb a very high wall, taking Cosette with him.
06:55They hide until Javert gives up and leaves.
06:59Then Jean and Cosette enter a church where they are seen by a man.
07:03At first, Jean thinks everything is over, but the man is someone he saved from the cart accident.
07:08The man agrees to help them find shelter.
07:12Jean hopes to disappear and start a new life elsewhere.
07:16Nine years later in Paris, poverty increases rapidly.
07:20There is evident tension in the streets as the poor complain about the current king, and remember that they killed the previous one.
07:28As the situation worsens, young students form a group called the Friends of the ABC,
07:33and are already planning a revolution against the monarchy, regularly going out into the streets to spread their message and gain support.
07:42One of these revolutionaries is Marius, who comes from a good family, but is now considered a disgrace and lives in a humble rented room.
07:50He is best friends with Eponine, the Thénardier's daughter, but does not realize that she is clearly in love with him.
07:57One afternoon, Marius sees Jean and an older Cosette helping the poor, and instantly falls in love with her.
08:05The Thénardier, who now live on the streets, also see them and recognize Jean immediately.
08:12They wanted more money, so they surround Jean, who tries to defend himself.
08:17Hearing the commotion, Javert and his police arrive to end the fight.
08:22While Javert is busy suppressing the vagrants, Jean flees with Cosette.
08:28On the way, Cosette and Marius look at each other.
08:31Monsieur Thénardier tells Javert who the man was, and now Javert becomes obsessed with finding him again.
08:39After the police leave, Marius asks Eponine to find out where Cosette lives.
08:44That night, the Friends of the ABC gather in a café to plan the revolution, but Marius cannot stop thinking about Cosette.
08:52The other men playfully tease him, but Enjolras scolds him for not thinking about more important things, like their mission.
09:00Soon, news arrives that the only government official who cared about the poor has died.
09:05The group prepares to go out and fight, but Eponine appears with Cosette's address, and Marius goes to see her instead of helping.
09:13Meanwhile, Cosette cannot stop thinking about the handsome man she saw earlier.
09:17She always feels lonely because Jean never let her socialize to protect her identity.
09:23Cosette wants Jean to share the secrets behind her isolation, but he refuses.
09:29After a brief discussion, Cosette goes to the garden and finds Marius at the gate.
09:34They confess their love while Eponine watches them from afar with a broken heart.
09:39The moment is interrupted by Jean, who orders Cosette back inside while Marius hides.
09:46Before leaving, Marius picks up the handkerchief Cosette dropped in the grass.
09:51At that moment, Monsieur Thénardier arrives with his gang, ready to capture Jean and earn a reward from Javert.
09:59Eponine screams to warn Cosette and Jean, then spits in her father's face, who slaps her in response.
10:05A policeman approaches to investigate the noise, and the gang has no choice but to flee.
10:12Jean also hears the commotion and thinks it's Javert, so he announces they are fleeing to England.
10:19Cosette tries to make him change his mind, but he refuses.
10:23Then she leaves a letter at the gate for Marius, explaining the situation.
10:27Eponine finds the letter, and after a great internal struggle over her feelings, hides the letter, and only tells her friend that Cosette has disappeared.
10:38A desperate Marius runs to Cosette's house, but by the time he arrives, she and Jean have already left.
10:46He considers going to look for them, but remembers the ABC's struggle and decides to stay and help.
10:51At the same time, Eponine disguises herself as a boy to join the revolution.
10:57While the rebels prepare their weapons, Enjolras goes out to convince local residents to join the rebellion.
11:04The next day, Enjolras and Marius interrupt a funeral procession, singing and waving flags of the revolution.
11:12Soon the crowd follows, singing together and calling for a better France.
11:16Javert is in that crowd, pretending to be a rebel to spy on them.
11:21Royal soldiers arrive to block the road and open fire, killing an old woman.
11:27The fight begins, and the soldiers start killing rebels with their swords, while the crowd does its best to defend themselves.
11:35The ABC leads the people to begin building barricades, using furniture civilians throw from their windows.
11:41Everyone runs through the city, gathering more objects to defend themselves, finding support at every corner.
11:48Enjolras points out that someone should infiltrate to discover the enemy's plans.
11:55And Javert offers, still pretending to be on the rebel's side.
11:59At night, the barricade effectively blocks the main road.
12:03Javert returns and tries to share false information, but Gavroche recognizes him and tells everyone who he really is.
12:11The rebels immediately capture Javert, who tries to defend himself and take down some men before Enjolras takes him down.
12:19At that moment, the soldiers appear and open fire, starting a new battle.
12:25Both sides begin to lose men quickly, as the street becomes a battlefield.
12:31Marius rushes forward with a barrel of gunpowder and does not notice the soldier, who is about to shoot him.
12:37Then, Eponine jumps to protect him and ends up dying in his place.
12:43When Marius threatens to detonate the barrel, the soldiers flee in terror.
12:48Then Marius checks on Eponine, who hands him Cosette's letter before dying in his arms.
12:55Afterward, Marius writes a letter to Cosette and asks Gavroche to deliver it, but it is Jaune who receives it at the door.
13:02He reads the letter and is moved by Marius' feelings, deciding to go to the barricade to protect his daughter's beloved.
13:10Jaune disguises himself as a soldier to avoid suspicion, but the rebels think he is another spy.
13:17While Jaune realizes Javert is tied nearby, Gavroche appears to defend him.
13:23At that moment, an enemy sniper appears on the roof, and Jaune shouts a warning before helping the rebels take him down.
13:32Now that everyone trusts him, Jaune asks permission to execute Javert.
13:37And Jolras allows it, but when they are alone, Jaune frees Javert and assures him he wants nothing in return, only to prove he is a good man.
13:48Javert flees while Jaune shoots into the air, pretending he killed him.
13:53The next morning, Marius discovers that the rain ruined the gunpowder, and they have little ammunition left.
14:01To make matters worse, the civilians have returned to their homes, and only the ABC men remain.
14:07Still, they refuse to surrender and take position at the barricade to fight to the end.
14:13Gavroche, excited, goes out collecting ammunition from fallen bodies, but ends up being shot several times by soldiers.
14:23Jaune takes the boy's body before the rebels open fire, thirsty for revenge.
14:28A new battle begins, and this time, the soldiers use cannons, quickly gaining the upper hand.
14:36One by one, the rebels are killed, and the people in the houses refuse to open their doors for those trying to save themselves.
14:44Marius is struck down, and Jaune runs to take his body and flee through the sewers.
14:49Injolras and the last rebels manage to enter an abandoned building, but the soldiers surround them and quickly kill them.
14:59Injolras raises the flag as a symbol of the revolution and dies with it in his hands.
15:06Shortly after, as the soldiers clear the area, Javert places his medal on Gavroche's body.
15:12He also realizes that Jaune is not among the dead and hears noises coming from the sewers.
15:18Jaune tries to move Marius' body unnoticed, but he slips, and both fall into a pile of waste.
15:26There they are found by Monsieur Thénardier, who steals Marius' ring.
15:31Jaune jumps on him and threatens to drown him, until Thénardier tells him how to get out of the place.
15:38Carrying Marius on his shoulders, Jaune goes through several tunnels until he finally exits the sewer.
15:44Unfortunately, Javert is waiting for him at the exit.
15:49Jaune asks for only an hour to take Marius to the hospital, promising to surrender afterward, but Javert still threatens him.
15:57Realizing that Javert doubts his own values, Jaune keeps walking with Marius' body, and Javert does not stop him.
16:05Confused about right and wrong, Javert decides to end his life by jumping into the river.
16:11Some time later, Marius wakes up in his grandfather's house, not knowing who saved him.
16:18Hearing what happened to his friends, he returns to the siege site to mourn.
16:23There he finds Cosette, who comforts him and promises to take care of him.
16:28Jaune observes them from afar, and realizes that his presence will only bring more problems.
16:35Later, in private, Jaune gives his blessing for Marius to marry Cosette, and tells him about his past, before announcing that he must leave to protect them.
16:45Marius understands, and promises not to tell Cosette the truth.
16:50Eventually, Marius and Cosette marry, but she is sad about Jaune's absence.
16:55The Thénardier try to invade the wedding disguised, but Marius recognizes them before they are expelled.
17:03The Thénardier say they saw Jaune carrying a body through the sewers, and want money to keep it a secret.
17:10They even show the stolen ring as proof, and Marius realizes that it was Jaune who saved him.
17:16He beats M. Thénardier, until he confesses that Jaune is hiding in the convent.
17:23That night, Marius and Cosette visit Jeanne, who is on the verge of death and begins to see the spirit of Fantine.
17:32Jeanne is happy to see his daughter one last time, and hands her a letter telling his entire life story, before dying peacefully.
17:39As Cosette has a fit of sadness, Jeanne's spirit joins all the deceased characters singing for beloved France.
