00:00A new and explosive lawsuit against FBI Director Cash Patel, filed by former FBI executives,
00:08he filed.
00:08That lawsuit alleges Patel knowingly broke the law when he carried out the firings at
00:13the behest of the White House, and it quotes him as saying he knew he could get sued for
00:18firing agents without cause, but that his job depended on removing people who had worked
00:24on cases against President Trump.
00:26Because, quote, the FBI tried to put the president in jail and he hasn't forgotten it.
00:32Joining me now, the MSNBC correspondents who got the early information about this lawsuit,
00:36they've been poring over it, Justice and Intelligence correspondent Ken Delaney.
00:41Well, the most striking thing about this stunning lawsuit is that it recounts alleged behind-the-scenes
00:45conversations with some of the biggest players in the Trump Justice Department.
00:49We're talking about FBI Director Cash Patel, Deputy Director Dan Bongino, and then-senior
00:54DOJ official Emil Bovee.
00:56Look, our viewers have heard a lot about how the FBI has been politicized.
00:59Carol and I have been reporting on these issues for months, but here for the first time, we
01:03have an on-the-record version of events from people who were in the room, including Brian
01:09Driscoll, one of the plaintiffs who ran the FBI for months before Patel was confirmed and
01:13then stayed in the senior job for months afterwards.
01:16And if these accounts are to be believed, it's actually worse than we could have imagined.
01:20This is a 69-page complaint that reads like a great piece of narrative journalism, Chris.
01:25And it portrays an FBI that is totally beholden to the whims of the Trump White House and
01:30to outside political actors, including MAGA activists on social media.
01:34As you mentioned in the intro, it alleges that Patel fired senior FBI executives on orders
01:39from the White House for reasons that were totally political.
01:43That's against the law.
01:44And the lawsuit says Patel acknowledged knowing it was against the law.
01:47He allegedly said he knew he would be sued, but that his job depended on him carrying out
01:52the orders of the White House.
01:53And what's really shocking to me is that many of these decisions seem to be driven by a small
01:57number of MAGA activists on social media who pressured Patel, Bongino, and the White House,
02:02often leveling false allegations against decorated FBI leaders.
02:06And to give you one example, MAGA activists falsely claimed, according to the lawsuit, that
02:11an FBI agent named Christopher Meyer, a military veteran, had participated in the Mar-a-Lago search.
02:16Meyer happened to be one of four pilots at the FBI.
02:19So he was actually flying Kash Patel around in an FBI jet.
02:23MAGA activists, of course, were outraged about this.
02:26So Driscoll was ordered to fire Meyer based on these false allegations.
02:30He resisted, according to this lawsuit, and told Patel it would be illegal, especially because
02:35Meyer is a military veteran with special protections.
02:38But Patel is quoted in the lawsuit as saying, I can't save everyone.
02:41Driscoll was ultimately fired for refusing to terminate Meyer, and Meyer also was fired, Chris.
