Need to add the lambda symbol (λ) to your Microsoft Word document for a math or science paper? This video shows you four different, easy-to-follow methods. Whether you prefer a simple keyboard shortcut, using the Symbol dialogue box, or even the handy Equation Editor, this tutorial has you covered. This is one of the fastest ways to insert the symbol if you have a numeric keypad.

Press and hold the Alt key on your keyboard.

Using the numeric keypad (not the numbers at the top of the keyboard), type 955 for the lowercase lambda (λ) or 923 for the uppercase lambda (Λ).

Release the Alt key, and the symbol will appear. Method 2: Insert Symbol Dialogue Box
This is a reliable method that works on all computers, regardless of whether they have a numeric keypad.

Go to the Insert tab on the Word ribbon.

In the Symbols group, click on Symbol, then select More Symbols....

A dialogue box will open. In the Font dropdown menu, select (normal text).

In the Subset dropdown menu, select Greek and Coptic.

Scroll down to find and select the lambda symbol (λ or Λ), then click Insert.
