00:00Hello, dear people. My name is Richard O'Brien, the author of that very odd musical, The Rocky Horror Show.
00:06I'd just like to say a very big thank you to the many of you that have interacted with it on one or two occasions over the past five decades,
00:14especially the lovely Shadowcast performers from all around the world.
00:18And now, I would like, if I may, to introduce you to a trailer of Strange Journey.
00:24It's the story of the creation of Rocky and the 50 years that have followed, because in very many ways, it's as much your story as it is mine.
00:35So, let's keep the rainbow banner flying high.
00:40It used to stand where I used to cut hair.
00:46Can you imagine when I was cutting people's hair if I said to them,
00:50One day, all this would be torn down.
00:54And there'll be a statue of me, wearing fishnets.
01:00I was contemplating whether I should get a proper job or stay as an actor.
01:05I said to Jim Sharman, I'm writing a little musical which might amuse you.
01:10Called They Came From Denton High.
01:12I basically suggested to Richard on the simple principle that it's a rock and roll horror show, why don't we just call it what it is?
01:20We opened and it was a phenomenal success.
01:24Everyone just went nuts.
01:26From the beginning, I just envisioned it as a film.
01:30Not having money added to the edginess.
01:32It was very hard work.
01:34We completed the film.
01:36And it flopped.
01:36It was like somebody had let all the air out of a balloon.
01:40They suggested, why don't we run the film at midnight?
01:44We are Rocky!
01:46We are Rocky!
01:48Bam.
01:48Everybody was amazed at that kind of success.
01:57It's the snowball effect, which goes from shout outs.
02:01Fine, I'm Bradley, you chief.
02:04Costumes to props.
02:05Toilet paper?
02:06Rice.
02:07It was like a rock concert.
02:09Touchy, touchy, touchy, touchy, touch me.
02:12I want to be dirty.
02:19I mean, you would hope at this point in world history that something like Rocky would be a relic.
02:26You'd have to turn to your child and explain.
02:28People used to be really afraid of someone professing that they are somewhere between two genders.
02:35At that point, when you're trying to figure things out, you could go to some place where there are a lot of people that are trying to figure that out.
02:42You can be there and you can be accepted for who you are.
02:45The truth of the matter is, of course, we all are freaks, aren't we?
