00:25Refugio Lovaldez, commonly called Refugio Alemán
00:28because it was built by the German Mountaineering Club, was constructed in 1932 by members
00:33of the Club Alemán Andino, the German Alpine or Mountaineering Club, as one of Chile's
00:39earliest formal mountain refuges. It was intended both as a base for skiing and for general
00:44mountain activities in the upper Rio Volcán Valley, at roughly 2,000 meters above sea level,
00:50at the feet of the volcano San José. Because it was built so early, 1932, and in an area
00:57with excellent access to classic Andean peaks and ski terrain, Lovaldez became an iconic
01:02refugio for Santiago's climbing and ski community, a hub for excursions into the surrounding moraines,
01:08glaciers, and volcanic peaks, San José, Morado, etc. It's frequently described in guide material
01:14and local histories as one of the first and most important mountain refuges in Chile.
01:19The Lovaldez area is also remembered for a severe winter tragedy in the 1950s. An excursion
01:25in July 1953 ended when a sudden storm slash avalanche killed a group of students and their
01:32guides, an event that left a lasting mark on local memory and is commemorated in memorials
01:37and retellings of the valley's history. Local accounts and institutional histories record this
01:42as a major event connected to visits in the Lovaldez sector. Over the decades, the refugio
01:48continued functioning as lodging, mountain base, and restaurant, but went through periods
01:53of difficult maintenance and even vandalism slash theft. In recent years, the facility has seen
01:59renovation and modernization under new concessionaires or operators, reopening with improved services,
02:06restaurant, year-round lodging, and mountain activities, while keeping its historic character.
02:11The Club Alemán Andino still figures in its stewardship and promotion. Today,
02:17Refugio Lo Valdez remains a popular destination for hikers, skiers, and visitors to Cajando Maipo
02:24looking for a High Andes refugio experience, views of San Jose and surrounding peaks, access
02:31to trails and a small mountain lake.
