00:00Hello, my name is Robert Daniels. I'm a critic in the UniFrance Critics Lab, and today I'm here
00:14to talk about Bologi's Omen, which is a film about a son who returns back to his home country,
00:26the Democratic Republic of Congo, with his white wife to pay the dowry to his family so that they
00:33might marry. But of course, when he comes back, he dredges up old wounds.
00:42The film, if I could describe the film in three words, I would say it's ominous, terrifying, and familial.
00:52It's a very genre-bending film. Most films that come from Africa, contemporary films that come from
01:00Africa, are genre-bending. In fact, this one has tinges of Afrofuturism in it. It's folkloric.
01:09There's fairy tales. It's an allusion to the Hansel and Gretel fairy tale. And it's queer and
01:18haunting. And we follow Coffey, who is the son who has always had a tenuous relationship with his
01:28parents, mostly because when he was born, he was born with a mark on his cheek, which denotes that
01:32I guess he's part of the devil. But more so than that, it's him and his mother who have a terrible
01:41relationship. And it's particularly because his mother has been trapped in this society that has
01:48basically guided her entire life. And there's a part of her that feels embittered because of it.
01:56And so when Coffey comes back, it's just a reminder of all the things that she hasn't done in her life.
02:01And she takes it out on him. And between Coffey and his wife trying to fit into this milieu in this
02:12different religious landscape, and then seeing the mother going through these cultural issues that
02:25are present for women in some African countries, what you find is a film that not only is stylistic and
02:34slick and very imaginative, but you find one that has great social politics and forward thinking in
02:45the way that it positions its characters. And so The Omen is a film that very much struck with me.
02:53And I think it's going to be one of my favorites for the festival. Thank you.
