We were nervous about this one—an Alt-Pop band covering Whole Lotta Love? Zeppelin fans might riot...

What makes Whole Lotta Love such a challenge is its unconventional structure—it’s practically the antithesis of a modern pop song. With no tidy verse-chorus-repeat formula, it’s a wild journey with a psychedelic middle section, Plant’s primal vocals, and Page’s legendary riffs. But Royal Oak rose to the challenge, flipping the script and somehow making it all… catchy?

Oh, and yes—they auto-tuned Robert Plant. (Sacrilege? Maybe. Genius? You decide.) Let us know if they pulled it off!

00:00In a moment, we're going to play a new song, and it's going to be your challenge to reimagine your past alt-pop.
00:07I've got the video title, Alt-Pop Band Ruins Led Zeppelin.
00:15Can we do auto-tune Robert Bland?
00:18Dude, this is going to be sick.
00:22I see why people told you not to do this.
00:30Guys, we have something.
00:34Yeah, yeah.
00:35We have something!
00:38Okay, so today we are at Mizora Studios with Royal Oak, an alt-pop band from Vancouver, BC.
00:46How would you guys describe your sound?
00:49Rooted in pop, but expansive into many other genres.
00:53Yeah, we all bring our own genre influences to the table.
00:57Okay, so in a moment, we're going to play you a song, and it's going to be your challenge to reimagine it as something in your music scene.
01:06So, alt-pop.
01:07You'll have complete creative freedom to change chords, rhythms, and tempos.
01:11You can make it uniquely yours.
01:13You can do whatever you want with this song.
01:16Okay.
01:16I will also add, I was encouraged not to give you this song.
01:19People are worried about what you're going to do with this song, because it's very different than what you do.
01:24Okay.
01:24Challenge except.
01:25Here we go.
01:26All right.
01:27Oh!
01:36Okay.
01:37So we're changing the key.
01:39Yeah!
01:40I think I could sing this.
01:48Oh, yeah.
01:49Okay.
01:53So put that in the track.
01:57This, I wonder what we're going to do with this part.
02:03Yeah, we definitely got to keep the rubber plant screams in there.
02:05Yeah, there's definitely some elements I think you have to kind of keep true to.
02:09I could do the bottom hand drumming.
02:11I'd say we'd probably, like, cut this in, like, half.
02:15Yeah.
02:15Right?
02:15Yeah.
02:16Yeah.
02:16I think we should make this, like, ten minutes.
02:19Sorry?
02:19We should just, like, make it ten minutes, make this part, just, like, lean into it.
02:23Yeah.
02:24Yeah.
02:25Shake for me, yeah.
02:28I wonder if we should add some, like, more chords.
02:35Because it's just this the whole time, right?
02:36Yeah.
02:39I almost feel like you cut some of that out.
02:41Oh, no, dude.
02:42We're going to cut, I mean, the whole thing is we've got to make it a pop song, right?
02:44I feel like we cut, like, trim all the fat.
02:48That's a verse.
02:49That's it.
02:50Is there only one verse?
02:52Oh, I don't know.
02:52We'll have to list it again.
02:54Just, I think it fades out from here.
02:56Yeah.
02:56Okay.
02:57All right.
02:58I see why people told you not to do this.
03:02I think you made a good choice.
03:05So, I've got the video title.
03:06Alt-pop band Ruins Led Zepp.
03:11This is a classic, very iconic song.
03:14Do you think you're going to get hate for this?
03:16Are you nervous about covering something so iconic?
03:19I don't, I mean, I'm not going to lie.
03:21I don't care.
03:22I don't give a shit.
03:24The thing is, we walked in here to do a job, and you gave us the assignment.
03:30So, we just have to do the assignment.
03:32And so, really, it's your fault.
03:35So, I should take the hate.
03:36Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
03:37Exactly.
03:38You know, there's so much, like, to gain from learning from music of the past and being able to express it.
03:46In different ways, and really try and put a modern take on it.
03:48And in some ways, that might even introduce people who maybe have, you know, like, young people who've never maybe listened to Led Zepp.
03:54And they will be like, oh, like, who originally did this?
03:56Like, that might bring in more people, you know?
03:58If we're a gateway for that, that's great.
04:00If we're just a gateway for, you know, hate, that's also cool.
04:05You know, we were up to the challenge, no matter what.
04:07I'm gonna, like, do you guys want to just jam and see, and just, like, with fuck-ups and all, and just see if we could land on a structure?
04:29I'm gonna give you my love, oh yeah, I'm gonna give you my love, yeah.
04:35Oh, oh, a whole lot alone, a whole lot, a whole lot alone, a whole lot alone, a whole lot alone.
04:48You've been learning.
04:50So that's a good, I think that's good for that part, yeah?
04:54I kind of, I think I want faster, and I also think I want higher.
04:57His vocal sounds low.
04:59I can agree to that.
05:00Yeah?
05:00I'm gonna give you my love, I'm gonna give you my love, I'm gonna give you my love, a whole lot alone, a whole lot alone, a whole lot alone, a whole lot alone, a whole lot alone.
05:14And then what, I know, that's, that's the hardest part, is this fucking, do we want to just start,
05:19now that we know what we want to do, should we start building some tracks, maybe?
05:26Too low.
05:27What we're doing right now is we're playing this keyboard, and we're pulling up sounds from Ableton.
05:35Oh, there we go.
05:36It's got some growl, too.
05:38We're cooking now.
05:40We can just try, we can just try layering that.
05:42At least if we have a bunch of options, we can start flying them around.
05:44As we're mapping out the song ourselves, we're actually also mapping it out in bars in Ableton so that we can make sure,
05:51as we play through the track, everything's properly following along.
05:55And I have this system on there that basically tells our instruments to change sounds at certain points.
06:05So now we're not, like, looking down and, like, doing all this, we just play.
06:11The good thing is, is that the strong song structure for this is going to be very simple, so we can spend more time doing this.
06:16Yeah, we gotta figure out what we're going to do in the bridge, though.
06:18That's true.
06:19We're just, I feel like we're just pushing that away.
06:21Well, because, yeah, we are.
06:23We're stalling, because we don't know what the bridge is going to be.
06:35Something like that, maybe?
06:41It already sounds huge.
06:42Dude, this is going to be sick.
06:44Hey, everyone.
06:45Hopefully you've been enjoying these covers videos on YouTube.
06:47My favorite part is watching musicians work through vulnerability together in community,
06:52which is what we're all about at Musora.
06:54You could join over 100,000 students learning guitar, vocals, piano, and drums.
07:00So if that interests you, a community of like-minded musicians, click that seven-day free trial in the description.
07:30I'm gonna give you my love, a whole lot of love.
07:37Great.
07:38A whole lot of love, whole lot of love.
07:40I still haven't decided what I want to do.
07:41Yeah, I think we should change it.
07:43Just say, whole lot of love?
07:44Whole lot of love, a whole lot of love.
07:49I think do it twice more?
07:50I think do it half as often.
07:52You need colon, baby I'm not my food.
07:56Oh, no, I don't know.
07:58That feels too like, because the whole thing is kind of like pushed, right?
08:02Okay, okay, okay, fair, fair.
08:03Yeah, I think the way you have it is, you need colon, baby I'm not fooling, but I'm not fooling.
08:13I don't know, I'm just trying to make it like, make it a little, like spice it a tad.
08:16I think, like, you don't want to overcomplicate it too much.
08:18No.
08:19Do we maybe just want to play through what we have, maybe?
08:22I've been in good times, baby, I've been yearning.
08:30That's, I think that's good for a lunch break.
08:32It's a start.
08:33Uh.
08:34Why are you doing that face?
08:36That sounds sick so far.
08:37It feel, like, I feel like everything else kind of has a bit of a vibe, but maybe, I think
08:42we just maybe need to develop it more, but just everyone hammering on chords feels just
08:46kind of lame.
08:47Like, guys, we have, we have something.
08:50It's like a key change.
08:53Better start screaming, boy.
08:56I don't know.
09:01Like, that's about the length of it, I think, right?
09:08Yeah.
09:09It feels kind of silly, but like, I don't know.
09:11I feel like if we do something like that, I feel like you guys should be like a, like
09:15if I go, whoa, you guys should be like, oh, in the room.
09:21Like.
09:22What?
09:23That didn't speak to me.
09:24That's fine.
09:25You get a very warm reception.
09:26That's fine, then we keep moving.
09:27What about like a hard tune moment?
09:29Oh.
09:30Like a, like a Kanye runaway.
09:31Yeah.
09:32Like that type of like.
09:33Yes.
09:34Do we do autotune Robert Bland?
09:37Ooh.
09:38Yeah.
09:39Yeah.
09:40Yeah.
09:41Oh.
09:42Oh.
09:43Oh.
09:44We'll add our last tracks and then fucking give her a swirl.
