00:00Warren out on the perimeter the Jets there to stop him it's a three yard
00:07pickup so Williams just watching from the
00:12sideline with the helmet on
00:15sometimes it's just catching your breath sometimes it's getting other guys some
00:19reps but you you have to imagine as long as he's good there's no reason he
00:22wouldn't be back out there soon playing defensive lineman can be tiring I don't
00:27know if you're aware gonna trust you
00:31got a 50 seconds to go first at third quarter
00:38he sideways to begin again that's part of his repertoire right now Warren's a
00:45bowling ball at 5 8 215 and that's a five-yard pickup
00:51there he is yep
00:56third and one now I'm a big believer I do not like going shotgun in one yard to go
01:05situations that's just me personally but of course it's gonna work out
01:09fantastically on cue yep and Warren is slammed down he's got enough for the
01:14first down Jamie and Sherwood with the tackle words exchanged
01:20Jones and Sherwood having a conversation and that will be the final play of the
01:25third quarter Steelers they're on the precipice they trail the Jets at the end
01:33of the three play action Rodgers on time
01:41Scott Rodick touchdown feels great protection deep ball on the way
01:46rainbow is caught Garrett Wilson touchdown Jets
01:51football is back the Jets 26 the Steelers 17 we start the fourth quarter
01:59Ian Eagle JJ Watt Evan Washford the rest of our NFL on CBS crew producer Ken
02:04Mack Suzanne Smith our director Mike Tomlin and the Steelers trying to cut into
02:10this Jets advantage they've got a first and goal at the five
02:15Quentin Williams is back in for the Jets
02:20right open and he hits Jalen Warren touchdown Steelers
02:28perfectly executed third of the day for Aaron Rodgers
02:36you put Aaron Rodgers under center you fake the handoff you don't even have to
02:41fake it really Jalen Warren just slips out into the flat too tough to cover from that
02:46middle linebacker position by Sherwood and it's a walk-in touchdown for the
02:51Pittsburgh Steelers that's an Arthur Smith special right there
02:57when we asked Aaron about Arthur Smith he said our personalities have meshed really
03:02well spent a lot of time together he's creative loves input their process is very streamlined and
03:08collaborative he's got a good ball game here 26 24 Jets remember Jets had missed an extra point but
03:17there was a penalty so they put the ball at the one went for two didn't get it and currently a two
03:23point differential and Rodgers now within two touchdowns of catching Brett Favre on the all-time
03:31passing touchdown list I think he's gonna get there yeah feel pretty good about it
03:40it was interesting just talking to Aaron last night and the change of scenery he said he knew day one of
03:47minicamp that this was the right fit yeah you've heard him talking about Mike Tomlin and just coming
03:52into that building the amount of respect he has for Mike Tomlin in just about every single player you
03:57talk to around the league seems to have the same sentiment about Tomlin it's the way he handles his
04:02business it's the way he talks to the guys and it was really interesting hearing Tomlin talk about
04:07how to handle such a veteran laden team because he said these guys have heard it all before I can't
04:12tell them the sky is green and have him believe me so I have to challenge myself to be a better coach
04:17and he's really enjoyed that okay from Boswell Gibson returning oh he loses the ball the bobble and
04:27turnover Gainwell the cough up by Gibson and the Steelers take over Gainwell with the slap away
04:37Skoronic on the recovery wow just gets a hand on the ball Skoronic right there to cover it up
04:49what a change you felt the Steelers fans the terrible towels come alive massive momentum changer here in
04:57MetLife
04:57and Mike Tomlin squad with a chance to pounce on it now they take over at the Jets 23 yard line keep in
05:11mind as well Wongu goes out with a hamstring injury probably would have been the return man in that
05:18situation really not gets it really good point Diane first down for the Steelers
05:24two point lead for the Jets
05:30Warren in the backfield
05:33give it to him
05:36extra cut
05:38and he spun down inside the 20. so that's a game of about three Skoronic big day opens it up with a
05:47touchdown gets the fumble recovery here fun fact thanks to Ken our producer
05:52his uncle is Trent Green so there you go exciting
06:00the takeaways from last season this is
06:04Pittsburgh Steelers football 33 of them tied for first with Minnesota they had 17 interceptions
06:12take the handoff Rodgers under a rough wide open touchdown Calvin Austin
06:19Aaron Rodgers comes back to Jersey with a bang
06:23again you give it up to Arthur Smith a little play action Calvin Austin just slips Brandon
06:35Stevens there finds an open corner of the end zone and of course Rodgers is going to put it right on him
06:41for the touchdown great play design great execution by the Steelers offense that is four touchdowns for Aaron Rodgers
06:49and replaying the playoffs
07:00Boswell
07:03curls it through
07:0313 points in the last 50 seconds and the momentum swing coming
07:09from the fumble on the kickoff return by Gibson
07:12Turnover by the Jets.
07:18Turns out to be severely costly.
07:23Steelers get the score.
07:28The NFL on CBS is sponsored by Little Caesars.
07:35The official pizza sponsor of the NFL.
07:38T-Mobile.
07:39Now the best network in America.
07:43And by Bud Light.
07:45If you drink, don't drive, decide to ride.
07:53Potential game-changing plays.
07:56The Jets just suffered a turnover on the return by Gibson.
08:01The Steelers turn that into seven points.
08:03Gibson gets another crack at it here.
08:07Spun and down.
08:09Just short of the 34-yard line.
08:15Aaron Rodgers.
08:17Last four season openers.
08:19These are not great memories for Aaron Rodgers.
08:22At the Saints in 21.
08:24A loss at the Vikings in 22.
08:27Of course, the torn Achilles against Buffalo here at Men Life in 23.
08:31And then last season at San Francisco, a 32-19 loss.
08:36Rodgers today, 17 of 23.
08:38229 yards.
08:40Four touchdowns.
08:41First player with four passing touchdowns in consecutive games on different teams.
08:45It's Preece Hall.
08:50Takes it to the 45-yard line.
08:52And that is enough for a first down.
08:55And cracks 100 yards rushing on the day.
08:58Ian, I'm really excited to see the response from this Jets team on this drive right here.
09:03They're a young team.
09:04They have a new coaching staff.
09:05They have a new quarterback.
09:07They just had a massive momentum shift.
09:09How do they respond?
09:10This is a chance for them to take the game and show their fans and say,
09:14This is who we are going to be this year.
09:17159 rushing yards for the Jets today.
09:21We still have 13.22 to go here in the fourth.
09:24Motion man is Garrett Wilson.
09:26Keep it on the ground.
09:27The spin.
09:28And Hall is slowed down and dropped.
09:31TJ Watt, the first one there.
09:32It's a loss of four.
09:35Just slashes inside.
09:36The tight end is trying to block down on him.
09:38He comes through that sea gap between the tackle and the tight end.
09:42And is in the backfield almost at the same time as the handoff.
09:45Not much doing there when you're breezed all to get away.
09:49And I must amend my earlier statement.
09:51He was at 100 yards.
09:54He is now at 96 yards.
09:56All right.
09:57We can make the announcement again here.
09:59That's all it takes.
10:00Two for the price of one.
10:01I like that with ice cream.
10:02You want to be factual.
10:04Second and 14.
10:09Shotgun for Fields.
10:10Fields.
10:12Oh.
10:13Direct target over the middle.
10:16He puts a mustard on it to the veteran Josh Reynolds.
10:20It's going to be short of the first down.
10:27Fields let it rip.
10:29I can tell you, it's been a bad game for anybody who likes to say Justin Fields is just a running quarterback.
10:34He's looked great in the pocket.
10:35Delivered some strikes.
10:39Kept his eyes downfield.
10:41Brees Hall picks up three yards.
10:42They needed a yard.
10:44It's a first down for the Jets.
10:45We send it to Evan Washburn.
10:46And I and Justin Fields is picking apart that secondary that's now down Joey Porter Jr.
10:51No injury designation as of now, but he doesn't have his helmet.
10:55He's been stretching out that left leg.
10:57Already lost to Sean Elliott for this game.
10:59Guys, this is that time in week one, game one, where they have not played this amount of live ball.
11:04And you start to see guys go down, whether it's cramping or muscle pulls.
11:09And that's a huge loss right now for the Steelers defense.
11:12Evan, that's a really good point.
11:13Talking about it being the first game.
11:15Guys haven't played a full game, especially if you didn't get the preseason reps.
11:18Fields finds his man downfield.
11:23They just tossed it to Mason Taylor, the rookie from LSU, for 20 yards.
11:28His first career catch.
11:31You've been waiting to see it all day.
11:32The coaches, the players, everybody has talked about Mason Taylor.
11:36They said he's everything you want in a football player.
11:39He's smart, he's savvy, he's smooth.
11:40He's obviously got the pedigree.
11:44Great pitch and catch there.
11:45Have a feeling Jets fans are going to be seeing Mason Taylor catch the ball for a long time.
11:49His father, Hall of Famer Jason Taylor, actually played a year for the Jets in 2010.
11:54His uncle, Zach Thomas, the outstanding linebacker from the Dolphins.
12:00Fields, shake and bake.
12:02And Fields gets the angle.
12:03High kicks it to the sideline.
12:05He's been chased by Patrick Queen, so that's four and a half yards for Fields.
12:12That's the danger with him, is he can just at any time he wants to.
12:15You saw it there.
12:16He outran Patrick Queen to the sideline there.
12:20I know last year was a small sample size for Justin Fields, but if you just look at the numbers,
12:24his completion percentage has gone up each year he's been in the league.
12:28And today, season opener, he's 14 of 17.
12:31Mm-hmm.
12:33Development.
12:34Time to develop.
12:35We're in a pressure cooker world today where we want everything to be microwaved to success,
12:39to take a Mike Tomlinism.
12:41He's just growing and learning.
12:43Second down and five.
12:43It's Hall, the defense had committed, and you could feel the pressure coming, but Hall got around it to at least turn it into a four-yard game.
12:56Tackled mid by Peyton Wilson.
12:57They've been having success running the ball to the left side, behind that left side of the O-line.
13:05Olu Fashanu, John Simpson.
13:08You've got to give credit to that Jets offensive line.
13:10You know, they had to shuffle around a little bit with Elijah Veritucker going out,
13:14and they've done a really, really good job running the ball today against a notoriously strong one defense.
13:19And Hall is back over 100 yards.
13:22This is the eighth play of the drive.
13:24Braylon Allen is in there.
13:26Short-yarded situation.
13:27Third and a long one.
13:29Fake it to Allen.
13:30Fields.
13:31Hurdles for the first down.
13:33He got hit from the side and a flag down.
13:38Another flag.
13:44Bill Vinovich in his 20th season as a referee.
13:47Two stints.
13:48Personal foul.
13:49Low block.
13:50Office number five.
13:5215-yard penalty.
13:54Feet third down.
13:55And that is a crusher for the Jets.
13:57That's Garrett Wilson.
14:01Correction.
14:02Correction.
14:03The foul's on the defense.
14:05Half the distance is the goal.
14:06Oh, what a switch.
14:08That is not a crusher for the Jets.
14:12It's the other way.
14:13Jalen Ramsey.
14:15Quite the opposite.
14:16That was like a WWE heel turn.
14:20Where's Cena?
14:21The ref just switched the emotions in this entire building.
14:25Wow.
14:25And Mike Tomlin, man, just shared his opinion with the official on the near sideline.
14:35See, that's an interesting one there because he's going in.
14:38And, yes, he does have to go through Braylon Allen to get to Justin Fields.
14:42So he starts to go low.
14:45Man, that's aāI understand the difficulty there as a DB.
14:48First and goal with the five.
14:52Timeout taken.
14:53First drive timeout.
14:56New York.
14:5832nd timeout.
14:59All right, let's bring in Gene's territory.
15:00Just watch the sequence of replays.
15:03Gene, what'd you see?
15:04Yeah, and I think that's what Coach Tomlin was saying, too.
15:07And J.J. was alluding to it.
15:08You know, Ramsey is trying to makeāto me, it looks like he's attempting to make a tackle.
15:13He's not traditionally, like, going directly through this block or in a low block area,
15:17which would be a foul.
15:18But in the attempt to tackle a runner like that, you can see him trying to avoid that low hit right there.
15:24In an attempt to reach, that's a tight call.
15:27And, look, they're trying to protect the low blocking.
15:29But here, to me, it looks like Ramsey's trying to avoid the offensive block and go low to make a tackle.
15:34In those situations, you can pass on that and not call a low block.
15:38I'm with you there, Gene, because I see his shoulder pad go around the knee of Braylon.
15:42And if Fields wasn't so close, I could understand it.
15:45But Fields is directly behind Braylon Allen there.
15:47So what's Ramsey's other option?
15:49He's going to stand up and possibly get run over by Braylon Allen.
15:52That's a tough one to put on a DB there.
15:54I understand.
15:54They were going to get the first down.
16:00So it did obviously place the football at the five.
16:04But it was also the drama of the fact that the initial call was against the Jets.
16:09And then the instant reaction and change.
16:13Ninth play of the drive.
16:16First and goal at the five.
16:19Not a give.
16:20And Hall falls forward for one.
16:25Highsmith combining with Y.A. Black, talented rookie out of Iowa.
16:30Fifth-round pick.
16:31Injury to Derek Harmon.
16:33So not active today.
16:35Harmon, the rookie out of Oregon.
16:36First-round pick.
16:38Harmon dealing with an MCL spring.
16:40172 yards on the ground for the Jets.
16:43That is a change of identity in quick fashion.
16:48It's exactly what he said he wanted to accomplish.
16:50And to come out of the gate that strong, doing what your new head coach has asked you to do,
16:56he has to be incredibly proud so far today.
17:00Shotgun fields.
17:02Fake it.
17:03And fields under a heavy rush.
17:05He's mauled down.
17:06Alex Highsmith gets to the quarterback.
17:15Well, Lou Fashionu had not given up a sack in his entire college career,
17:19but he's going to give one up here to Alex Highsmith.
17:22He just comes up and under.
17:24So quick.
17:26Right inside.
17:27A little bit of a quick set-out, over-set by Fashionu.
17:31Highsmith, a savvy vet, takes advantage of it underneath and takes fields down.
17:36Garrett Wilson was well-covered.
17:38Fields didn't have the time either way, but there was nothing available for him.
17:43This is now a third and goal.
17:44Back it up to the 10.
17:45We're down to 7-and-a-half to play in the fourth.
17:47Fields steps up.
17:49Fields looking to run.
17:51Fields has room.
17:52Can he get there?
17:53No!
17:55Now what do you do?
17:57Brandon Echols, the former Jet, saves a touchdown.
18:06Oh, he tried for the Superman, for the pylon, just didn't get there, but, I mean.
18:15So they've got to place the ball at the 1.
18:19Yep.
18:20And there is an injured Jet on the play.
18:23That's why we have a stoppage here.
18:25I think it might be Cam Hayward.
18:27Oh, no.
18:27An injured Steeler.
18:28Cam Hayward, long-time Steeler, seven-time Pro Bowler, playing his 212th career game.
18:41That's the most by a Steelers defensive player all time.
18:45He was in a contract hold-in where he was in camp.
18:48He was with the team, but was not participating all the time.
18:52They ended up coming to an agreement, got some incentives tied to the playoffs.
18:56That came out yesterday.
18:58We asked Mike Tomlin.
18:59He said, well, he got on the plane.
19:00I knew we were okay.
19:01Yep.
19:03Cam's one of those guys that he doesn't need a lot of reps to be ready to go.
19:07He's a vet, knows what he's doing.
19:09Walter Payton, man of the year.
19:12Pittsburgh Steeler.
19:14And now decision time for the Jets.
19:17I mean, just sneak it.
19:20I mean, I'm a big believer they've had a couple successes so far today with the quarterback sneak.
19:27You got one yard to go.
19:29You talk about being tough, physical, that offensive line.
19:33Tell them, let's put this on your shoulders, guys.
19:36Let's punch this ball in.
19:41No cam in the middle for this play.
19:42It is fourth and goal.
19:47And the ball is just shy of the one.
19:52Tight formation.
19:54Timeout.
19:55Pittsburgh.
19:57First timeout.
20:00Pittsburgh.
20:01Possibility for...
20:04You have the speed of Justin Fields.
20:06Fake the handoff.
20:07Naked all the way to the edge.
20:08Saturday, it's once again big time at 3.30 Eastern.
20:14USC hits the road to take on Purdue.
20:17We'll get you set for kickoff.
20:19Beginning at 2.30.
20:20College football today.
20:21The Big Ten is on CBS.
20:22And it's streaming on Paramount+.
20:25You know, that philosophy, they had a two-point try earlier at the one.
20:35They tried to run inside to Braylon Allen.
20:37He got stuck.
20:38We know that Fields has the ability.
20:41We've seen it in this game of getting inside.
20:44And it's having the athleticism to get across the goal line.
20:49It's so difficult to stop a quarterback sneak, no matter how.
20:52They could tell you it's coming.
20:54Like, look at the Eagles.
20:55Obviously, they have the most success.
20:56But as a defensive lineman, they know the snap count.
20:59You don't.
20:59That's the little advantage they need for it to be so successful.
21:03Fourth and goal from the one.
21:05Hall in the backfield.
21:07Fake it.
21:07And it's fixed.
21:08It is.
21:08There it is.
21:09By himself.
21:11For the touchdown.
21:11Touchdown.
21:12Touchdown.
21:12Touchdown.
21:19Just take the lead.
21:27Just so fast.
21:29Just so fast.
21:31Fake the handoff.
21:31Everybody's obviously committed to the inside run.
21:34And then Fields.
21:36Easy walking.
21:38He knows it right away.
21:39High step your way in there.
21:4212 plays.
21:4465 yards.
21:45John Simpson was the injured Jet on the play.
21:50And he's being escorted to the sideline.
21:52Jets will go for two here.
21:54They have a one-point lead.
21:57Second rushing touchdown of the day for Fields.
22:00He's got one through the air.
22:01Two on the ground.
22:03We have 7-0-1 to play in the fourth quarter.
22:07What a battle.
22:08Just a great football game.
22:10Week one.
22:10What more could you want?
22:11Teams going back and forth.
22:13You got scoring.
22:13You have storylines with the quarterbacks.
22:16Switching teams.
22:17This is fun.
22:20Going for two.
22:21Up by one.
22:24And a timeout called by the Jets.
22:27Play clock was down to one.
22:30New York.
22:3130 seconds timeout.
22:36It's a tough spot to have to use one there, obviously.
22:39Yeah, you can tell Aaron Glenn was ticked off.
22:42But, you know, it's an important two points.
22:45Maintaining his emotion as well, recognizing that everyone's getting on the same page.
22:50It's a season opener.
22:51But you think about this game and how back and forth it's been.
22:55Now you've got seven minutes left.
22:57And who knows, if it keeps going back and forth, you have the ball with under two minutes left.
23:01And you could really use that one.
23:03That's definitely one to watch as we go towards the end of the game.
23:06But, yeah, potentially costly on a two-point try.
23:11They were going to run out of time.
23:12So, one timeout remaining for the Jets.
23:14Two left for the Steelers.
23:18Cameron Hayward is back for Pittsburgh.
23:28Two-point try.
23:29Fields operating from the gun.
23:34Snap it to him.
23:35Fields to throw it.
23:36High in the air.
23:37Back in the end zone.
23:39And incomplete.
23:42Darius Slay was in the area along with other Pittsburgh defenders to make sure Garrett Wilson couldn't haul it in.
23:51The high step from Fields for the touchdown.
23:54The Jets take the lead, but only by one.
23:58The two-point try nullified.
24:06The amazing shots of today's game are provided by Nationwide.
24:12Back here at MetLife.
24:13Tight one.
24:14The Jets and the Steelers.
24:16The kickoff here from Falk with the Jets now leading at 32-31.
24:23Return man Gainwell from the five.
24:26Gainwell makes a cut.
24:27Gainwell slowed down a bit.
24:29Still on his feet.
24:31And then gang tackled as he crossed the 35-yard line.
24:36Iron Eagle along with J.J. Watt.
24:38Evan Washburn down on the sidelines.
24:39J.J., watch your head, dude.
24:41I feel very concerned for you right now.
24:44This has been fantastic football to open the season.
24:46It's been a phenomenal game.
24:48It's been back and forth.
24:49There's been points.
24:49Everything has been happening.
24:51I think for Jets fans, something they're proud to see is there was a 14-point swing there.
24:55And momentum clearly went the Steelers' way.
24:58But all the Jets did was methodically put themselves back in this football game.
25:02And that old phrase, same old Jets, currently not applying.
25:04Steelers take over with 6.53 on the clock.
25:10And open up at the 37-yard line.
25:15Rodgers, that quick throw, but Kenneth Gainwell, he got suffocated by Sherwood.
25:22It's a loss, a big one, on the play of nearly six yards.
25:28Great job here by last year's leading tackler.
25:31Jamie and Sherwood just sheds his block and lays a nice physical hit clean.
25:37Oh, yeah.
25:39Sherwood was rewarded big contract three years, $45 million during the offseason.
25:44He has emerged as one of the leaders of this defense.
25:48We'll call it second and 15 now for Pittsburgh.
25:50We approach six minutes to go.
25:54Shotgun, Rodgers, rushes on again.
25:56And Rodgers nearly intercepted.
25:59It goes through the hands of Brandon Stevens, the free agent pickup from Baltimore.
26:04Immediate pressure from Will McDonald on the left tackle.
26:08Just another spin move.
26:10And then Brandon Stevens, oh, so close.
26:13Just off the hands.
26:14And here is Will McDonald after the spin laying a hit on Rodgers.
26:20The crowd is into it.
26:30Jets have everybody up.
26:31Are they going to bring them all or are they going to bail everybody out?
26:35Bring it.
26:35Third and 15.
26:37Rodgers.
26:37He's got Quincy Williams.
26:47Rodgers helped to his feet.
26:49That was a futile set of downs for the Steelers.
26:55Gainwell had a great block to start, but Quincy Williams just fought through it and sacks Aaron Rodgers big time here.
27:02This place is buzzing once again.
27:04The Jets have brought the momentum all the way back in their favor.
27:08High, low action with Briggs.
27:11Williams and Williams.
27:12And the punt from Waitman didn't get all of that.
27:19Does take a steal or bounce and then Gibson just ducks out of bounds.
27:22Not taking any chances.
27:30Penalty marker on the play.
27:325-21 mark of the fourth.
27:34Jets are going to get the football, leading by one.
27:44382 yards of offense for the Jets.
27:47182 on the ground.
27:49Bill Vinovich.
27:51During the kick, in and a little block in the back.
27:53Receiving team number 37.
27:5510-yard penalty.
27:57First down.
27:58That is Quantes Stiggers.
28:00This has been a wild one here at MetLife.
28:06Aaron Rodgers, in his return, taking on his former team.
28:09Has thrown for four touchdowns.
28:11D.K. Metcalf, the big pickup for the Steelers.
28:14Three catches, 72 yards.
28:16Justin Fields, the former Steeler, making his Jets debut.
28:19Three total touchdowns.
28:21And Brees Hall has put together quite a day.
28:24143 total yards for New York.
28:26Yeah, I think you have to give offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand
28:30and a lot of credit.
28:31He's done some great work with this Jets offense last year.
28:3431st in rushing.
28:35We've been talking about it all day.
28:36Today, having success on the ground,
28:39translating that into some success in the air.
28:43Tanner Engstrand, first-year offensive coordinator,
28:45doing a great job so far.
28:46Let's see what he has in store for this drive.
28:49He's been five minutes left.
28:50Five years as a member of the Lions staff,
28:52eventually getting to passing game coordinator.
28:55Aaron Glenn came over, of course, from Detroit,
28:58and we asked him why Tanner Engstrand.
29:01And he said, I just was always impressed with him.
29:05From the day I met him, he was coaching tight ends in Detroit,
29:08but he had a well-rounded pedigree, ton of different systems.
29:11He was at Michigan under Harbaugh.
29:13And he just felt it was a great fit.
29:16Yeah, it's funny.
29:16I was asking Tanner, I said,
29:18are you going to bring that fourth down aggressiveness from Detroit over here?
29:20And he said, that's a good question to ask Aaron.
29:23He deferred.
29:26First down, Fields.
29:28Underneath pass is caught by a former Lion, Josh Reynolds, for five yards,
29:33quickly tackled by Echols.
29:35Stay tuned.
29:36NFL Today update delivered by Little Caesars.
29:38Time permitting, all the latest NFL scores and highlights.
29:42We hit the five-minute mark.
29:47Fields is 15 of 18 for 211 yards, six straight completions for Justin Fields.
29:55It would take a serious drive, but this is one of those situations
29:58where if you're going to be a running team
29:59and you want to bleed the clock out here at the end of the game,
30:03this could be a chance to show it.
30:05Brees Hall accelerates for two.
30:11Tackle made by Hayward.
30:13So the numbers that people were looking at from last season,
30:18everybody around the NFL knew the numbers would not mirror those
30:22this season for the Jets.
30:24They have changed their whole offensive approach,
30:27and it has showed in the season opener.
30:2937 rushing attempts, 182 yards on the ground.
30:33This first down would be worth about two minutes off the clock
30:39if you can get it.
30:41This is a third and three.
30:44Fields avoids the first but couldn't avoid the second wave,
30:48and the Steelers come through with Pittsburgh sending safeties.
30:54Clark, Thornhill all over it, a loss of two.
30:57Highsmith started it out, just missed the tackle,
31:00and then Chuck Clark against his former team,
31:03making a huge stop there.
31:04Like you said, Ian Saban, A, a first down, but B, a ton of clock.
31:10So it'll be Austin McNamara
31:12punting away for the Jets
31:15with Calvin Austin, dangerous return man,
31:18standing at his own 28-yard line.
31:20They use as much clock as possible, a bit of a rush.
31:29McNamara gets a good one off,
31:32and Austin, fair catch, called for,
31:35and he brings it in at the 18.
31:38That's where Pittsburgh will set up shop.
31:40That's a 56-yard punt for McNamara.
31:44Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
31:50They do have possession and a chance to grab the lead.
31:57High in 313 left, down by one.
32:01Aaron Rodgers met life against his old team.
32:04This is what it's all about right here.
32:08NFL football's back.
32:14Rodgers and the Steelers open up
32:16at the 19-yard line.
32:2032-31.
32:21Jets playing to a one-point lead.
32:26Just like the schedule makers drew it up.
32:29Rodgers, and that's a catch for Friar Muth.
32:38That's one of those where the coverage was great.
32:41There was just nothing the defender could do
32:43when Friar Muth runs a route like that,
32:45and Rodgers puts it where only he can get it.
32:48So the spot is going to leave them short.
32:51Second and one for Pittsburgh.
32:53Under three minutes to go.
32:58From the gun.
32:59Rodgers sets and drives.
33:01Had a flag down.
33:03Contact.
33:04It was Stevens against Austin.
33:07Yep, Austin had his step.
33:09Stevens just grabbed.
33:11Fast interference.
33:13Defense over 21.
33:15Flat foul.
33:16Automatic first down.
33:20We'll see a little tug of the jersey right there.
33:23He's got him beat.
33:24Holds on to the arm.
33:25It's a tough one, man.
33:31Playing DB in this league is so hard.
33:33Those spot fouls where you're getting a 20-yard penalty
33:35because you're hand combat fighting,
33:38you're trying to keep up with a guy who he knows the route,
33:41you don't.
33:41I am glad that I did not have to play a cornerback.
33:46Did anybody ever ask you to have a cornerback?
33:48I'm very insulted.
33:49Aaron Rodgers, he's been down this road many times in his career,
33:55trying to do it yet again.
33:57Rodgers, and that ball knocked around and ends up in the hands of Metcalf.
34:09That was wild.
34:13That was awesome.
34:14Off the ricochet.
34:15Bobble, hit by Sauce, hit by Sisko, hit by Jonu, back into the hands of DK.
34:25That's an 11-yard reception.
34:27And the Steelers closing in on field goal range.
34:30They're there.
34:31Calvin Austin with the catch.
34:33Tackle from Stevens.
34:34We're down to 2.08 to play.
34:38Wow.
34:38I grew up in Wisconsin.
34:39Antonio Freeman caught a ball in his back one time.
34:41That was crazy.
34:47I mean, it's not quite the immaculate reception, but pretty impressive.
34:52Steelers.
34:54They're down on the scoreboard, but everything is pointing in the right direction for Pittsburgh.
35:02You're watching NFL Kickoff, presented by YouTube TV.
35:04The NFL on CBS is sponsored by McDonald's.
35:16And by Verizon.
35:19The NFL is powered by Verizon 5G.
35:27Two minutes to play at MetLife.
35:29Season opener with the Jets leading at 32-31, but the Steelers are driving.
35:34Line of scrimmage is the 40 on a second and nine for Pittsburgh.
35:42We're good, we're good.
35:44We're good.
35:48Rogers.
35:49Quick hitter.
35:50Catch by Smith.
35:52But the Jets sniff it out.
35:53Brings up third and long now for the Steelers.
36:01This was the 11-yarder to DK Metcalf.
36:05How?
36:07Just bobble ball.
36:08Just bouncing all around.
36:09Somehow he's laying on the ground and ends up with it.
36:14Four different players touch the football.
36:18That last play is tough, Ian, because they're trying to do a quick little screen to John
36:21to get a couple yards to kind of guarantee field goal position,
36:24but it backfired and almost moved them a little too far back.
36:28Yep.
36:29They still need five, six yards to feel comfortable.
36:34We're down to a minute 13 left.
36:36And Aaron Rodgers takes a timeout.
36:38He was trying to get the Jets to jump.
36:42So one timeout remaining on both sides.
36:46Stay tuned.
36:46NFL Today update delivered by Little Caesars.
36:49Time permitting, all the latest NFL scores.
36:51and highlights week one around the National Football League.
36:55Right now you're looking at a 60, 61-yard field goal.
36:59Boswell career long is 59.
37:03He's been reliable.
37:05He's been a phenomenal kicker for the Steelers.
37:09He's definitely hoping that his new quarterback can get him a few more yards
37:13at least right here.
37:14Pittsburgh got off to such a tremendous start last season only to see the year end.
37:32Wild card round against Baltimore.
37:33They made sweeping changes and obviously the biggest one, Aaron Rodgers at quarterback.
37:40Right now they're asking him and this offense to put them in position to possibly win this game.
37:49So let's see if they send a few guys to try and ensure that this gets knocked out of field goal range.
37:54Third down and 11.
37:56Rodgers, he will throw it.
37:58Sideline toss up in the air.
38:00Incomplete.
38:01Calvin Austin with Brandon Stephens.
38:03And now Pittsburgh has to make a decision.
38:11They're looking for a flag.
38:13Little hand fighting there.
38:20Austin was talking to the officials.
38:22He felt Stephens got his hands all over him.
38:25And now the field goal unit is on with Boswell.
38:28That's definitely one of those if you're a Steelers fan, you're looking for it.
38:31If you're a Jets fan, you feel it is clean.
38:34This is a 60-yard attempt.
38:37It would be a new career long for Boswell.
38:40For the lead.
38:42Sweeps the leg.
38:4360-yarder.
38:45He's got it.
38:48Pittsburgh goes in front with 103 on the clock.
38:52Plenty to spare.
38:54Boz.
38:55Huge.
38:56No problem for Chris Boswell.
38:58He has been so consistent.
39:04Two-time pro bowler.
39:07And he nails it from long range for our seventh lead change of the day.
39:13That had some distance on it.
39:15That was good from plenty.
39:17So now the Jets will get the football.
39:23An exhale sigh of relief from Tomlin.
39:28Celebration for Rodgers.
39:31And the pendulum swings to New York and Justin Fields.
39:3434-32.
39:38The Jets couldn't convert on two two-point conversions.
39:44And this is a two-point game.
39:47The one timeout obviously comes into play here.
39:51So Boswell will kick it off.
39:58Gibson and Smith are back deep.
40:03And it's going to be the rookie.
40:05Arian Smith on the return.
40:08Smith's got major speed.
40:10But he gets taken down.
40:12Just across the 30-yard line.
40:15Coming up next.
40:16You can count on game two of our NFL on CBS doubleheader.
40:19Being a must-see matchup.
40:20The Lions and the Packers lock up at Lambeau.
40:23You can always count on Sundays with the NFL on CBS.
40:26And streaming on Paramount+.
40:28All right, and are they all like this?
40:3166 points, seven lead changes.
40:33I mean, this is everything you could possibly ask for.
40:36JJ, get used to it.
40:37This is what life in the booth is.
40:40I love it.
40:41And I get to work with one of the best in the business.
40:44Very happy to be here.
40:46Well, that target line for the Jets on the Pittsburgh end of the field to give Nick Folk a chance.
40:52Fields high throw.
40:53And it's handled by Tyler Johnson.
40:56Johnson off the practice squad and contributing here in the late stages of the fourth quarter.
41:01The clock is moving, though, down to 44 seconds.
41:03Jets have the one timeout remaining.
41:05You have to hand that ball to the official or at least try and spot it yourself.
41:08Save a couple seconds here.
41:10They pick up seven.
41:11Fields hanging tough in the pocket.
41:13Fields taking time.
41:14Downfield throw.
41:16Incomplete.
41:18Jalen Ramsey makes the play against Josh Reynolds.
41:21And the clock stops with 30 seconds left.
41:24New addition to the Steelers paying off big here.
41:27Jalen Ramsey is going to be all over him.
41:29Almost runs the route for him as he runs just a little comeback.
41:36Had a chance to really finish the game there if you can haul that one in.
41:39Third down and three for the Jets.
41:42These are the situations as a pass rusher.
41:48You just lick your chops.
41:49You know they have to throw it.
41:51You get the tee off.
41:55Fields steps up.
41:56And Fields is hit as he threw the football.
42:01It's ruled incomplete.
42:02But now the Jets face a fourth down.
42:05Patrick Queen.
42:07He came firing through.
42:09Terrell Austin pulling something out of his bag here.
42:11Sends both linebackers at Fields.
42:14Just overpowers the offensive line.
42:16Too many guys to block.
42:18And a beautiful hit there by Patrick Queen.
42:21And this could be your ball game.
42:25Fourth and three.
42:2725 seconds to go.
42:29Two point lead for the Steelers.
42:31Only ten on the play clock.
42:33Got to get going here.
42:39Fields.
42:40On fourth down.
42:41Steps up.
42:42Fields delivers.
42:43Catch man.
42:44And the ball is jarred loose.
42:46Garrett Wilson could not secure it.
42:50And Jalen Ramsey has slammed the door shut.
42:53No better way to introduce yourself to your new teammates than making a hit like this to end the game.
43:07Game on the line.
43:09Fourth and three.
43:10Coming up with a massive clean hit to end the game.
43:14What a ball game.
43:16What an absolute ball game these two teams have put on for us today.
43:21Those two players were jawing at the end of the first half.
43:25And it's Ramsey who wins the battle.
43:29He lifted Wilson in the air to make that hit and dislodged the ball.
43:35It would have been enough for a first down.
43:37And the drive would have continued.
43:39Instead, the Steelers take over.
43:41The Jets have one timeout remaining.
43:4318 seconds on the clock.
43:44All the changes that Pittsburgh made.
43:5329 Pro Bowls acquired by the Steelers during the offseason.
43:59And it pays off in the end.
44:02Aaron Rodgers gets a win in his first game as a Steeler.
44:08The offense did its job, but the defense put the exclamation point on this one.
44:1534-32.
44:17The Steelers defeat the Jets in the season opener.
44:23That was a whale of a game.
44:27Unbelievable.
44:27And I think Jets fans have to be proud.
44:32Like, it's very tough to take an L in opening day, but the team they put out there, the way they fought, the way the offense looked under Tanner Engstrand, they got some things going.
44:46Aaron Glenn talked about this team being highly competitive.
44:50A team the fans can be proud of.
44:55Again, no moral victories because you want to be 1-0, and the Steelers are 1-0.
44:59That's why Chris Boswell's got a big smile on his face.
45:02He nailed his career long of 60 yards to put the Steelers in front.
45:09Pittsburgh will be home for Seattle next week, and the Jets will host the Buffalo Bills.
45:17I did not see 34-32 today, Ian.
45:19Coming in, you try and analyze it, game one, you don't know what everybody's going to be, but I definitely didn't see 34-32 being the final.
45:28394 yards of offense for the Jets, and it is not enough.
45:33The Steelers win it.
45:39Let's go to Evan Washburn.
45:40Yeah, hold on, Aaron's.
45:45Still catching up with some guys here.
45:49Aaron, thanks for stopping by here.
45:52I don't know where to start, man.
45:53From the Boswell 60-yard field goal to that Jalen Ramsey hit to close this thing out.
45:59What's going through your mind right now?
46:00A lot of things happened in week one.
46:04It's a crazy game.
46:06They got after us, you know, at times, but we had some opportunistic plays, big fumble on the kickoff, and, you know, I thought there's a lot of teachable tape out there for us, but when we had to make a drive, we put a drive together.
46:21It's been a minute since you could smile after a week one.
46:25What do you appreciate about this moment with this team right now?
46:29Well, I love these guys.
46:30I love the organization.
46:32Love them taking a chance on bringing me in and believing in me and giving me the opportunity to be out here with my guys.
46:39There's no greater feeling of being on the field and being able to compete, and that's what I was thinking about all those days in the offseason was opportunities like this.
46:49I didn't think it would be against my former team, but really proud of our guys making clutch plays down the stretch.
46:57Last one for you.
46:57You look pretty comfortable in this Arthur Smith offense.
47:00Yeah, there's a lot of garbage being talked about, you know, about myself or Arthur or whatever out there, how we're going to coexist.
47:08We've got a great relationship, and he called a really good game.
47:12I got to play a little better in spots, but happy to be 1-0.
47:16It's fun to watch, man.
47:17You look the rest of the way.
47:20All right, Evan.
47:21Aaron Rodgers, 22 of 30, 244 yards, four touchdowns in the season opener.
47:28It is returned to MetLife.
47:31For J.J. Watt, Evan Washburn, Gene Steratore, the rest of our crew, I and Eagle saying so long from East Rutherford.
47:39We'll get you to J.B. and the NFL Today update delivered by Little Caesars right after this.
