00:00On 14 February 1999, in the picture-cue setting of Dunedin, the cricketing stage was graced
00:06by a young Jack Vizcalis, who produced an innings that still gleams in the memory of
00:12the purist.
00:13It was the first ODI against New Zealand and while his teammates fell to impetuous strokes
00:19against disciplined bowling, Jack Vizcalis stood firm and anchor amidst the storm.
00:24South Africa had burst out of the gates with frenetic energy, but their aggression soon
00:30proved costly.
00:32Vickers stumbles as Bassman sought glory in haste, leaving their innings threadbare.
00:37Only Jack Vizcalis, with his unflinching temperament and classical approach, settled into a long
00:43vigil.
00:44His blades carved out a masterful century, 100 runs from 117 balls in 171 minutes, decorated
00:51with 10 precise boundaries and one towering strike over the rope.
00:55Though the protease could muster only 211 runs, Jack Vizcalis dominated the scorecard, a lone
01:03monument of defiance against New Zealand's probing attack.
01:06In reply, the Kivis eventually chased down the target, winning by three wickets with just
01:11five deliveries to spare.
01:13Yet while the scorebook records victory for New Zealand, it is Vizcalis' century that endures
01:19in the lot of the game.
01:21Let's enjoy Kali's innings.
01:23That's cute and that'll look for two, Kent has a good arm, and the cars is quick.
01:29Then the umpire Doug Kauwe decides he'll come upstairs for another look at this one.
01:40Early money suggests that the batsman got home just in time.
01:44I think the early money's spot on, yep.
01:47Spot on, yeah. Let's have a look.
01:53Direct hit would have been interesting.
01:57That made all the difference.
01:58More than prepared to play their shots when the ball is there.
02:04Yes, I'm sure the Australians are looking forward to getting to the West Indies.
02:09I'm looking to destroy them as well,
02:11because Dennis Lilley, the great Australian-class bowler,
02:13is on record as saying in a recent newspaper article,
02:17with the battering that the Australians had, particularly in the 70s,
02:21the barrage of far short-pitch bowling,
02:24but now is the time for Australia to get their own back on the West Indies.
02:32The few that would sympathise with that to Richard.
02:36A few New Zealanders as well. Good luck, Australia.
02:42Very wide delivery.
02:47Well, it's wide, and he's picked the gap.
02:49It's a beautiful shot.
02:51Typical Callis.
02:54Beautiful form.
02:58Callis on the strike, and he's got that away for four.
03:01That's beautifully cut.
03:04Raced off the middle of the bat.
03:07It's a lovely late cut by Callis.
03:09Just the late, this is Martin Crowe's on about.
03:16Just weighted all the way nicely there.
03:19And it wasn't that wide.
03:20It wasn't that a poor delivery.
03:30Callis has just smoked this through mid-wicket,
03:32and it'll go all the way.
03:33It's not a big boundary there through mid-wicket,
03:35only about 50 metres.
03:36Certainly it's not a big boundary,
03:46but it's too premeditated, I feel.
03:50It's going to plant one foot down,
03:52just have a swat anyway.
03:54If you look to try and do this with Harris,
03:56small boundary square,
03:58look to play some sweet sort of sweet slog pulls,
04:01and really try and find that fence as often as possible.
04:04Goal!
04:10Edged.
04:11And this is the way for four as well.
04:13It's very fast here at Carrasbrook.
04:19So the run's still coming thick and fast for South Africa.
04:23They don't seem to be worrying about the fact they've lost four wickets.
04:26Count us with that previous shot through mid-wicket.
04:28Really trying caution to the wind.
04:30This is a lot more controlled.
04:32Just angling the face deliberately.
04:34Beautiful shot.
04:36It's a great touch by Callis.
04:37Six boundaries now.
04:40That's a glorious shot too.
04:45Work on it!
04:47Saras' first over has cost ten,
04:49and South Africa 107 for four.
04:51Yeah, this is a change of pace.
05:04Now, it just shows how quick it is here.
05:06Can't, Cairns can't believe it.
05:08That's gone away for four.
05:11And, uh, cleared man.
05:12Just a little wide
05:13for the off-glance.
05:15Well, it's good pitch.
05:21It's also a fast outfield.
05:23And just opened the face of the bat there.
05:26There's no slips in place.
05:28And Matthew Horne is pretty quick across the deck.
05:31Not quick enough.
05:32It's good to use the one.
05:33Can't compete in the field.
05:34Short.
05:35And that's, uh, 50.
05:431.26 for five after 26.
05:52Charging and safe.
05:54In fact, it's always going to be safe in the stand.
05:57No one back either.
05:59Just seemed to hang there for a while.
06:01I wondered whether it had the legs.
06:02But it had plenty.
06:03Sure did.
06:04It had plenty of gas behind this one.
06:07Here's the psychological points.
06:09South Africa versus Vittori.
06:11They're not going to sit back.
06:12They're going to come at him.
06:14Jack Callis, the only South African two.
06:16Really good going today.
06:1766 not out off 70.
06:22It's a beautiful shot.
06:24And this will go all the way.
06:26There's only four men on the offside
06:27to the left arm spinner.
06:31And Callis has played a beauty.
06:34He's going to miss out on this.
06:41Tad short from Vittori.
06:44He's in good neck.
06:45The secret has been that they pick up wickets on a regular basis.
06:52Although they're threatening here to pick up a rear boundary.
06:54And they do so.
06:55So that's a bonus for South Africa.
06:58And they've had the clamps put on them for quite some time.
07:03They need these boundaries.
07:04It's a signature shot of Callis.
07:11He's used this extensively right throughout his innings.
07:14Played it to perfection.
07:16Took you on that, Kate.
07:17He got it very fine.
07:18He would have been home, isn't it?
07:31The urgency is expressed.
07:35Running on the shot almost.
07:36Tad made quick ground and needed a direct hit.
07:49That's a good shot.
07:51Standing very tall, Callis.
07:53Pick up two.
07:53I've never actually picked this bat up.
08:01But to me, it looks like a huge chunk of wood, that.
08:08Let's have that, Kuzner.
08:10And Nash does well.
08:14It was a fumble.
08:15But it wasn't a costly one.
08:18Outstanding piece of work from the skipper.
08:20But this ball was hit hard.
08:23And the appreciative smiled.
08:27It's an acknowledgement from a good piece of work from Nash.
08:36Charging.
08:36Now Callis.
08:38And a little fumble by Jeff Allett down the deep.
08:43So with that two, Callis goes to 99.
08:50And a tenth on getting through to three figures with a boundary.
08:58So action probably from both ends, Callis and Kuzner.
09:05Don't get it past Cairns.
09:08So Callis is 10.50s in one day international cricket.
09:12Three centuries to this point.
09:13It's a very good conversion rate once he gets to the half century of going on.
09:19It's a sign of the top class batsman.
09:25And there it is.
09:28Century number four for Chargallis.
09:31Beautifully constructed innings.
09:33Well controlled.
09:35And innings that the South African players and fans will appreciate.
09:41To watch cricket of the 1990s is to revisit a golden age.
09:46And to see Jack Callis in his youth is to witness the making of classes.
09:51No batsman cherished his wicket more dearly.
09:54And no wicket was ever valued more highly by opponents.
09:57With broad shoulders and a calm presence.
10:00He embodied the very essence of a classical cricketer.
10:03His technique was granite solid.
10:06His mind an impenetrable fortress.
10:08With the ball he could surprise with pace, swing and lift.
10:12In the slips, his reflexes and sure hands turn the improbable into the routine.
10:17This was not merely a century.
10:19It was a declaration of what was to come.
10:22Jack Callis, the rock of South African cricket, had begun carving his name into history.
10:28Jack Callis' efforts at Dunedin was one such masterpiece.
10:31And innings that revealed temperament, patience and a sense of duty that would later define his
10:37illustratious career.
10:39Matches are often remembered for victories and defeats.
10:42But the true aficionados recalls the elegance of strokes, the resolve of character and the
10:48artistry that breathes life into the game.
10:51This inning was a window into the rare gift Callis possessed.
10:54The ability to play not just for himself, but for the rhythm of the team.
10:59Watching it today is not merely an exercise in nostalgia.
11:03It is a reminder of why cricket has always been described as a game of character.
11:08Where patience and grace stands shoulders to shoulders with power and aggression.
