00:00Gloria in excelsis Deo
00:27Gloria in excelsis Deo
00:46701 years before the birth of Christ
00:54and the mighty armies of Assyria march out to conquest and to war.
01:01Led by King Sennacherib, son of Sargon, their hosts swept westward, westward through Syria,
01:09west to the Phoenician shores, crushing all who dared to oppose them.
01:14Sidon crumbled before their weight of arms.
01:19With Tyre besieged, King Eleus fled to the Isle of Cyprus.
01:23The cities of Ashdod, Ammon, Moab, and Edom surrendered.
01:27And the Assyrian hordes thundered on, on toward Jerusalem, the holy city of the Jews.
01:36There, the last broken but courageous forces of Israel had gathered.
01:42Preparations for a final and all but hopeless stand were made
01:45under the leadership of Hezekiah, King of Judah.
01:49Sergeant, Sergeant of the Guard.
01:56What do you see, Sentry?
01:57Someone comes.
02:00Oh, Your Majesty.
02:01Oh, that feather of dust.
02:03Probably a messenger, Your Majesty.
02:16Not one of ours.
02:18See those flashes of light?
02:23Yes, sire.
02:25Only Assyrian chariots carrying knife blades on their wheels.
02:33Notify the Captain of the Guards.
02:56Hold.
02:57That's their signal for a parley.
03:01Eliokil.
03:02At your command, Majesty.
03:05Take Shepner the scribe and find out what our pagan friend has on his mind.
03:23I'm Eliokim, keeper of the household of Hezekiah, King of Judea.
03:27Tell your Hezekiah that the great king, Sennacherib of Assyria, says thus.
03:36On what can you put your confidence now?
03:38On help from Egypt, that broken reed?
03:41On your God, Jehovah, who has been powerless against my king thus far?
03:44Certainly not on the few remaining men you have.
03:48We have sufficient to...
03:49If each of your men could grasp ten reins, I and your women and children too, you'd not have enough to hold the horses of our chariots.
03:58This is Sennacherib's offer.
04:00Kneel before him, surrender your pledges, and he'll give you two thousand horses, if you have enough men to ride them.
04:06Let us lower our voices, or speak in Syria.
04:11It is not wise to discuss treaties in the hearing of those who man the walls.
04:14Indeed.
04:15They are the very ones who should hear the words of Sennacherib.
04:17Listen, you starving ones.
04:21Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.
04:24Your one hope is to make peace with Sennacherib.
04:28Lay down your arms, and he'll give you food and wine, water from his cistern.
04:32Lead you to a land of grain and vineyards, a land of plenty.
04:36Are you still dreaming that your Jehovah can save you?
04:39Ask yourselves, have the gods of other nations saved them from the might of Assyria?
04:43Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad?
04:47Where are the gods of Sparvame?
04:51Speak, men of Judah.
04:52What is your answer?
05:13All that afternoon, as Hezekiah prayed for help, the vast Assyrian hordes advanced on Jerusalem.
05:41When darkness had fallen, two daring men slipped out by the small gate.
05:48What are you going to hold that thing all night?
06:15A dull blade binds in the bone.
06:17A man needs rest before a battle.
06:20Think of the loot we'll miss if we're not in the front line by daybreak.
06:30And then he said, think of the loot we'll miss if we're not ready by daybreak.
06:36Had you any chance to count their numbers?
06:39It would have been like counting the blades of grass.
06:42Their campfire stretched to the farthest hills, Your Majesty.
06:44You've done well.
06:54Eliakim, see to the sentries.
06:56Have the others get all the rest they can.
06:58I dare say we'll all be busy very early.
07:02Your Majesty, I've spent much of the day in the temple praying.
07:13I was about to go again, perhaps for the last time.
07:18Will you come with me?
07:19There is no need, Your Majesty.
07:21The Lord Jehovah has given me His answer to your prayers.
07:24Thus saith the Lord concerning the king of Assyria.
07:29He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there.
07:34Neither shall he come before it with shields.
07:36For I will defend this city to save it, for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake.
07:44Even as Isaiah had prophesied, the rising of the sun brought no attack.
08:00Only a distant cloud of dust, marking the route of a retreating army.
08:08And when Hezekiah led a scouting party to investigate.
08:11During the night, the angel of the Lord had struck the camp of the enemy, slaying 185,000.
08:30And the few warriors of Assyria who survived fled to their native land.
08:44All the people of Judea joined with their king in giving thanks to the Lord.
08:53And in the days that followed, the Lord revealed many things to Isaiah.
08:57Matters of such importance that he had them written down for the guidance of his people.
09:05The Lord has told me, Your Majesty, there will be no more warfare in your lifetime.
09:11But in the years to come, there will be great trouble for our land.
09:18Jerusalem will be destroyed.
09:22Our people will be made slaves.
09:25But this will not be for all time.
09:28For he promises to send a Messiah, a Savior for all men.
09:38The Lord himself will give you a sign.
09:42Behold, a virgin shall bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel.
09:49He shall come from the root of Jesse, and the spirit of Jehovah shall be upon him.
09:53And in that day, he will stand as an ensign of the people unto him will all nations seek.
10:01And his resting place shall be glorious.
10:09The years passed by, and the centuries, and all that Isaiah prophesied was fulfilled.
10:19Jerusalem felt the iron heel of many conquerors.
10:23But through freedom and slavery, bondage and rebellion, the words of Isaiah were not forgotten.
10:39He shall come from the root of Jesse, and the spirit of Jehovah shall be upon him.
10:47Centuries later, in the land of Judea, during the reign of Herod the Great,
10:51the devout continued to pray for the fulfillment of the promise.
10:56In the village of Nazareth, among those who prayed, was a young maiden named Mary.
11:02Your betrothed works late.
11:31He is making a jest for our home.
11:34And an angel appeared unto Mary and said,
12:01Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord is with thee.
12:07Blessed art thou among women.
12:10Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found favor with God.
12:15Behold, thou shalt bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.
12:21He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest.
12:25And the Lord God shall give him the throne of his father David, and he shall reign forever.
12:32And of his kingdom there shall be no end.
12:36How shall this be?
12:37The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.
12:44Therefore, the child to be born will be called Holy, the Son of God.
12:48Son of God.
12:49Behold, the handmaid of the Lord.
13:04Be it unto me according to thy word.
13:08Very soon thereafter, Mary left to visit her cousin Elizabeth.
13:24Meanwhile, in Nazareth, Joseph was troubled by her departure.
13:49Good afternoon, Joseph.
13:51Good afternoon.
13:52Oh, here, let me.
14:00There's something I've been wanting to ask you.
14:04Indeed?
14:05Ever since Mary left this morning.
14:08Does she want to break our betrothal?
14:11Why, she said nothing like that to me.
14:13And I'm certain she would have mentioned it if the thought had entered her mind.
14:17Oh, yes, I suppose so.
14:19Didn't I hear her say she loved you when we bade her goodbye?
14:22Yes, she did, but...
14:23But what, Joseph?
14:26Why did she leave so hastily, with no word as to how long she'd be gone?
14:31And with our wedding date agreed upon?
14:33If only your kinswoman had sent for her, if she had been ill, if there had been some reason for her going.
14:39There is a reason, Joseph.
14:46The angel of the Lord appeared to her in a vision.
14:50And told her to go?
14:51Well, but why?
14:54Why Mary?
14:56We cannot question his wisdom.
14:59The things he wants us to know, he will disclose at his time.
15:03But I'm sure Mary loves you.
15:06Well, I'm as sure as I am that...
15:07Well, that she'll come back to us.
15:09And Mary came into the hill country of Judah.
15:26Having come to the city of Judah, Mary entered the home of her kinswoman Elizabeth, the wife of Zacharias.
15:34And she entered the house and greeted Elizabeth.
15:46And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed,
15:50Blessed are you among women.
15:53And Mary said...
15:55My soul magnifies the Lord.
15:58And my spirit rejoices in God, my Savior.
16:02For he is regarded the lowest state of his handmaiden.
16:08For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.
16:16For he who is mighty has done great things for me.
16:21And holy is his name.
16:24And his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation.
16:32He has shown strength with his arm.
16:35He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
16:39He has put down the mighty from their thrones.
16:43And exalted those of low degree.
16:46He has filled the hungry with good things.
16:49And the rich he has sent empty away.
16:52He has helped his servant Israel in remembrance of his mercy.
17:00As he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his posterity forever.
17:07And Mary abode with her kinfolk for about three months.
17:22And then return to her own home.
17:24It was then that she told Joseph of the message given her from God.
17:34And Joseph, hearing these things, was deeply concerned.
17:41Until one night, when as he lay asleep, an angel of the Lord came to him and said,
17:46Joseph, Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary, your wife.
17:54For that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
17:58She will bear a son.
18:00And you shall call his name Jesus.
18:03For it is he who will save his people from their sins.
18:06And so, Mary and Joseph became husband and wife.
18:27Hear ye, hear ye.
18:43To all subjects dwelling in the lands of Syria, Israel, Samaria, and Judea.
18:48By command of His Excellency Gaius Caesar Octavianus.
18:52August ruler of the Roman Empire.
18:53All the world shall be counted, listed, and taxed.
18:57What, more taxes?
18:58Is there any end of the taxing of the man?
19:00Silence, you dogs.
19:03In obedience to this command, all men and women shall within 30 days return to the cities of their forebearers.
19:10There to be enrolled.
19:12Failure to obey will be punished by death.
19:15To the cities of our forebearers.
19:27It won't be an easy journey for you.
19:29I've always wanted to see Bethlehem.
19:31Not long thereafter, Joseph and Mary started the long journey on the road to Bethlehem.
19:44The city of their forebearers.
19:45The city of their forebearers.
20:15The journey was long and weary.
20:22But at last they saw the lights of Bethlehem in the distance.
20:25...
20:37Am I a servant?
20:43No.
20:44Am I a slave?

23:26Joseph
23:34after all before David was a king he was a shepherd he must have spent many a night with his
23:41flocks
23:46that night in the hills nearby there were shepherds guarding their flocks
23:53here now youngster hold still eleven travelers in that last party by that makes more than more than five score since the sunset you're supposed to be watching the flocks not counting the people month in and month out I can see sheep once in a lifetime can I see the roads crowded from dawn to midnight even so you're
24:00are still watching sheep what human sheep
24:10More than five scores since the sunset.
24:12You're supposed to be watching the flocks, not counting the people.
24:16Month in and month out, I can see sheep.
24:18Once in a lifetime can I see the roads crowded from dawn to midnight.
24:22Even so, you are still watching sheep.
24:25What?
24:26Human sheep.
24:27The sheep of Israel.
24:29Leading obedience to the orders of Rome.
24:32Tying peacefully to the governor's shearing pens.
24:35This isn't a shearing, just a tallying.
24:38An enrollment, a census taking.
24:41First a tally, then a clipping, then a census, then more taxes.
24:47More taxes?
24:48You really think so?
24:50I don't think, I know.
24:52With the Romans it's always been more, and more, and more.
24:56It will be until our shepherd's crooks turn to spears.
25:01That kind of talk, I don't like it.
25:04It can start trouble.
25:05After all, we're part of their empire.
25:07They extended their treaty of peace to Herod.
25:10Treaty?
25:11A privilege to live on the lands that once were ours, as long as we pay taxes, bow to them, bend their will.
25:17Our time will come.
25:19It was promised by our prophets, written in our scriptures, that a Messiah will come to our people.
25:26Yes, but when?
25:27Who knows?
25:28We must wait, have patience.
25:30I've waited all my life, a day and a night.
25:35Our people have waited over 700 years.
25:38We have had leaders before.
25:41We have had leaders before.
25:42Jeroboam, the younger.
25:44Judas Maccabee.
25:46Hezekiah.
25:46It will be well worth a hundred centuries of waiting for the greatest of all.
25:53In every generation, our young men have said, soon, soon, and dream their dreams.
25:59I did in my youth, and my father, and his father before him.
26:06So perhaps will your children, and your children's children.
26:13Perhaps.
26:15Perhaps.
26:15But as long as we know the Messiah will come someday, our task is to wait.
26:22Wait and be good sheep.
26:25Aye, good sheep.
26:26But at least sheep with a hope.
26:38And as they watched over their flocks, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them.
26:45And they were afraid.
26:52The angel said, fear not.
26:55For behold, I bring you glad tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
27:01For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.
27:08And this shall be a sign unto you.
27:10Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
27:16And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly hosts, praising God and saying,
27:23Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will to men.
27:28Glory to God, thank you.
27:29Glory to God, thank you.
27:45May we see the child.
28:15Of course.
28:36The Savior, yes. Yes, the Savior.
28:40Then you know.
28:42The angel of the Lord appeared to us tonight in the hills.
28:46There were many with him. Many.
28:47All singing the praises of God.
28:50It was a wonder beyond all wonders.
28:54And so to the world, God's greatest gift was given.
29:06The only begotten Son of God.
29:09The Prince of Peace, born of a virgin and cradled in a manger.
29:15The Prince of Peace, born of a virgin and cradled in a manger.
29:19The Prince of Peace, born of a virgin and cradled in a manger.
29:21The Prince of Peace, born of a virgin and cradled in a manger.
29:27The Prince of Peace, born of a virgin and cradled in a manger.
29:35The Prince of Peace, born of a virgin and cradled in a manger.
29:40The End
