Cervical cancer cases on the rise in Central Visayas — DOH

Cervical cancer cases in Central Visayas climb to 241 in 2024, with deaths rising to 163, prompting authorities to intensify vaccination and screening programs. Cases have steadily increased from 51 in 2021, 205 in 2022, and 218 in 2023, while deaths rose from 45 in 2021 to 52 in 2022, and 123 in 2023. Dr. Joan Antonette Albito, head of)the Department of Health (DOH) 7’s Non-Communicable Diseases Section, said screening has expanded from 3,728 women in 2021 to 14,946 in 2024, though barriers such as cost, distance, stigma, and asymptomatic early disease still delay diagnosis.

00:00In Central Visayas, we have in 2024 alone 241 cases of cervical cancer, and this is about 1.61% out of those women screened for cervical cancer.
00:20So we don't know how many are still out there on diagnosed. So that's why we are really encouraging every woman, every girl, to submit herself for screening.
00:33Because as discussed earlier, you can have no symptoms at all until such time that when the cancer is already in a late stage, and then that's the time that the urgency is there because the treatment would already be difficult and costly, not just in terms of financial, but emotionally, not just for the patients, but for the families as well.
01:03But in terms of the trend, Dr. Joan, would we say that there are cases here in the region? Is there a rising trend?
01:10Yes, there's a rising trend of cervical cancer cases in the region.
01:15Would we be able to give data to our friends in terms of the percentage or comparative data?
01:20Okay. In 2021, we had 51 cases. In 2022, we had 205.
01:28Wow.
01:29Okay. Okay. In 2023, we had 218. And then 2024, 241. So we can see that the trend is really increasing.
01:42I experienced profuse or heavy bleeding during my menstruation, which I thought at that time was just normal.
01:51And until I felt other symptoms like feeling bloated and sharp pain in the lower abdomen,
02:04that especially, and I just would have to put or support my tummy with a pillow to ease my pain.
02:15And since it was during COVID time, there were no clinics available for consultation.
02:21So I really waited until September wherein the face-to-face consultation was available by appointment.
02:30And my OB-GYN recommended for some series of tests like blood works, blood smear, biopsy, PPS, or the transvaginal scan,
02:45whole abdomen ultrasound, and the CT scan.
02:48After all the results came out, I was diagnosed with stage 3 cervical cancer on October 2018.
02:55So when I was diagnosed with stage 3 cervical cancer on October 2018, 2020, 2020, I was 56.
02:59So when I was diagnosed with, or when I was informed with my illness, I never cried.
03:08Because I thought it was just part of my life journey, the trials in life.
03:14So I even told my children that it's okay, we'll go through it.
03:20And however, or subconsciously, I actually withdraw myself from people.
03:27I don't want to know or to let friends know what's happening with me.
03:34And so other than my parents and my siblings, there were only a few close friends who knew about my diagnosis.
03:44Trusted friends whom I asked for prayers.
03:48And since I had an aggressive case of cancer, my children informed me to readily submit to treatment.
03:58And so I started my treatment in November of 2020.
04:04And I had 28 cycles of radiation therapy, 4 cycles of brachytherapy, 6 cycles of chemotherapy.
04:14By March of 2021, my doctor declared me as cancer-free.
04:20However, in July of the same year, it was found that my cancer cells activated and surgery was needed.
04:27So the biopsy result was benign.
04:31So I was happy because biopsy was benign.
04:57So I was happy because biopsy was benign.
05:01And I gotここ in July and I just opened it up being right now.
05:07So I found that for five years, I fell through it upstairs and I was told you about it.
05:11I was in the clear 근데 for three months after 10 years.
05:15Life and action.
05:17He died after a ten year or three months after 7, I visited him to gets back to me.
