00:00The Cumbrian Brothers making a name for themselves in the movie world.
00:21Coen Brothers are big names in the Hollywood film industry.
00:25And now two brothers from Cumbria are hoping to make their mark too.
00:29Yes, Michael and David Groom from Wigton have just made their first feature film.
00:34And it's been a sellout at the Keswick Film Festival.
00:37Between the Lights will go on general release later in the year.
00:40And the siblings hope it will be a huge hit.
00:43Matthew Taylor's been to meet them.
00:45Do you believe in ghosts?
00:46I believe in energies.
00:48Set partly in their home county of Cumbria, the supernatural romantic film Between the Lights
00:54premiered at where else but the Keswick Film Festival last night.
00:59The two brothers from Wigton who made the film...
01:02This is one of my favourite scenes.
01:03...now divide their time between America and the UK.
01:07But their hearts and their film background belongs firmly to this part of the world.
01:13I'd spend all my earnings in this video shop in Carlisle on a Saturday and just buy up films
01:18that I haven't seen yet.
01:20And there was a video shop in Wigton.
01:21And we used to go down there as soon as the posters came out and put our name on the back.
01:24And we claimed the posters.
01:25Clem the posters or the cardboard cutouts.
01:27Yeah.
01:27And you used to make home videos of each other?
01:29Yeah, I'll never forget when we first raised enough funds to get a camcorder and we would
01:35be making...
01:36I mean, we filmed like friends and family but also used...
01:40We did little animations with toys and things like that.
01:43So yeah, it was all manner of stuff really.
01:45A documentary even.
01:46I even did the documentary about sparrows once.
01:48Now very much grown up, this is their first ever feature film which they've written and made together.
01:54Michael as director, David as the producer.
01:57With local people as extras and shot in places like Keswick Town Centre and around Derwent Water.
02:05It was a very deliberate choice.
02:06We knew the production value that filming in Cumbria can bring and it looks spectacular.
02:10We got some beautiful shots.
02:12We filmed in quite a few locations.
02:14Some beauty spots as well.
02:16There's a reason that Hollywood comes knocking to shoot in the lakes.
02:19We've been well aware of it all our lives.
02:21So yeah, we always try and incorporate it into any of our projects.
02:25But there were, let's just say, challenges, particularly the Cumbrian weather.
02:31We were here in February and it was weather-wise not the best February to be here.
02:38There were hurricane warnings and the National Trust were in our ears all the time saying
02:42you can and can't go here and there and things like that.
02:45And so we had our crew on the side of the mountain fighting against gale force winds
02:49and then when Mike's wanting take after take in Newlands Valley in the driving rain
02:55and stuff like that or a freezing cold day at Long Meg.
02:59You know, there are hurdles to overcome but it was a lot of fun
03:03and the sense of achievement's just made all that more.
03:06The human brain is a biological quantum computer within which consciousness runs as a programme.
03:11Their film, which will be on general release later this year,
03:15tells the story of a sceptical scientist who falls for a paranormal investigator
03:19with some spooky elements thrown in.
03:23We see their love story, we dip into their story over three Christmases consecutively
03:28and by the third Christmas she's kind of witnessing things that really kind of call into question her beliefs.
03:36She starts to come round to the idea that there might be something else, metaphysical.
03:41Does it have a happy ending?
03:42It's got an ending.
03:44I think, yeah, it's, I mean, there's hope at the end.
03:52The ending's, obviously, you know, the audience can make of it what they want.
03:56It received its world premiere in New York in December
03:59but got this European premiere right here to mark the start of the Keswick Film Festival.
04:06The festival is showing 25 films over the following few days
04:10so there should be plenty for anyone, no matter what their taste.
04:13Next, Matthew Taylor, ITV News, Keswick.
04:17You can't watch a film without a bit of popcorn.
04:19That was a big bucket of popcorn there, wasn't it?
04:20Good luck to Michael and David Groom on the release of that film.
04:24Recognise some of the locations as well they've been filming out there.
04:26It's always a thrill when that happens.
04:28Yeah, it is.
04:28Oh, no, that is.
