00:00the john moore's painting prize brings together the best in contemporary british painting

00:05right now supporting artists from all over the uk whether they're undiscovered emerging or

00:11established in their careers the prize provides a platform for artists to inspire disrupt and

00:17challenge the british painting art scene as an artist you're stuck away in a room by yourself

00:22and you just don't you know kind of thing am i doing the right thing here should i just give it

00:26all up you know what am i doing this for and then you kind of enter this kind of competition and so

00:33you're like wow yes someone's really responding to what i'm doing as i'm on the right tracks

00:40showcasing the very latest in painting across the uk the competition culminates in a major exhibition

00:45every two years here in liverpool john moore's is i think you know such an amazing painting prize you

00:52know and as painters you know we've all looked up at it from college and through our careers and we're

00:58like wow john moore's is the best you know we get really it is really exciting and it has such history

01:03and legacy the entire judging process is completely anonymous jurors who are a mix of art world and

01:09creative industry figures are not given the names of the artists or any information explaining the

01:15meaning of or intention behind the artworks it's very important on many levels i mean that you sort of

01:22feel it's a huge achievement and um it opens up the doors in many ways um you know i've got a lot of

01:30generated a lot more interest in my work since i've been shortlisted um loads of really good feedback and

01:40um yeah so it's a kind of real launch pad past prize winners have included david hockney mary martin and

01:50sir peter blake who became the first patron of the painting prize in 2011 after winning the junior

01:57section of john walls three with his painting self-portrait with badges in 1961. this show's

02:04really beautiful there's so many really lovely moments of light and curation and passages of

02:09color and context so yeah it's brilliant and i love liverpool i always love coming here so it's really

02:15really cool from small to large scale abstract to portraits there's no theme for the prize as soon

02:21the work is varied but there's one thing all these artists have in common and that is talent it's just

02:27such a accolade and a validation of the work that i'm doing now i feel wow i must be doing something

02:34right the winner gets 25 000 pounds on a solo exhibition at the walker art gallery there's also

02:41a prize for visitors choice which is selected by visitors to the exhibition this year's winner is ali

02:48fallon for their work if you were certain what would you do then the exhibition at the walker art gallery
