00:08As many as six candidates
00:10for the far-right Alternative
00:12for Germany Party have died
00:14in recent weeks ahead of local
00:16elections in the state of North
00:18Rheine-Westphalia, and it's prompted
00:20unfounded suspicions on
00:22social media. On September the 14th,
00:24district, municipal and
00:26city councils, as well as some mayors
00:28will be elected in the western German
00:30state, with a reported
00:3220,000 candidates running for office.
00:34Police have ruled out
00:36any foul play in relation
00:38to these six deaths. The causes
00:40range from serious pre-existing
00:42conditions to suicide.
00:44A senior official from Alternative
00:46for Germany itself has also dismissed
00:48speculation that these deaths
00:50were in any way intentional.
00:52But there have also been clear
00:54attempts to sow conspiracy
00:56and suspicions. The party's
00:58leader, Alice Vidal, shared a post
01:00on X where another user
01:02describes the death toll as
01:04statistically almost impossible.
01:06This theory has been amplified
01:08on social media and by
01:10controversial public figures.
01:12Here, British far-right activist
01:14Tommy Robinson asks
01:16what's going on? And the billionaire
01:18owner of X, Elon Musk,
01:20comments weird.
01:22Conservative publications have also
01:24misleadingly described the deaths
01:26as mysterious or unexpected.
01:28The North Rhine-Westphalia
01:30Ministry of the Interior has said
01:32that candidates from other parties
01:34have also died in the electoral campaign
01:36but that these deaths have not
01:38sparked the same and founded suspicions.
01:40The deaths do mean that ballot
01:42papers issued in certain constituencies
01:44as well as some mail-in votes
01:46are now invalid. It also means
01:48the party will have to nominate new
01:50candidates to replace the deceased.
