00:01On Salvage Hunters,
00:03a rare piece of motoring memorabilia gets Drew revved up.
00:07DIA bags.
00:09Sorry.
00:10That's very nice.
00:13You don't like it.
00:14You don't like it.
00:15Yeah, it's lovely.
00:16Doing deals beats family ties.
00:19That might belong to my brother, that.
00:21I'm sure he had intentions to put it in his children's bedroom,
00:24but that hasn't happened, so it's fair game now.
00:27Brother, you love kicking in.
00:29Yeah.
00:30And when it comes to buying antiques,
00:32there's no room for sentimentality.
00:34That is lovely.
00:36I'm a bit pig sick, but it's very you, that.
00:39Win some loser, mate.
00:45Drew Pritchard is one of Britain's leading antique
00:47and decorative salvage dealers.
00:49Oh, my word, I love this stuff.
00:51Joined on the road by queen of the haggle and quick flip, Vicky Knott.
00:55How much are they?
00:56£100 in the pit.
00:57I was going to bed you £70.
00:58Well, thanks for your film, but you're not fine.
01:01And lover of all things weathered and wonderful, Alistair Dreibera.
01:04What about the triumph?
01:05Have you seen that, Drew?
01:06Ooh.
01:07Ooh.
01:08Come on, let's go and have a fight over it.
01:10Drew is sharing the knowledge.
01:12That's got a fair bit of Asia.
01:13It's horse hair in there.
01:14And that's a nice bit of old timber.
01:16And expertise.
01:17What a thing.
01:18You know why they're so deep?
01:19Why they're so long?
01:20Top hats.
01:21Top hats.
01:22Oh.
01:23He's gained over the past three decades.
01:25Would 400 quid buy both hats?
01:27No.
01:28Ooh.
01:29I've got to try.
01:30Where are we off to today?
01:31Ashburton.
01:32To see Lydia.
01:33In a nutshell.
01:34Antiques.
01:35In a nutshell.
01:36In a nutshell.
01:37In a nutshell.
01:38Ashburton.
01:39Very long tradition of antique shops.
01:41Lots of them.
01:42There's several there now.
01:43So we'll go and see Lydia, but if we get any time, we'll go and have a look at the others.
01:56Yeah, we've got them.
01:57But it's a good call, and you will find other dealers down in the area as well buying.
02:02For Drew, being a successful dealer means keeping his ear to the ground.
02:07And being ready to act on a tip-off that could help him source desirable antiques.
02:12Today, he and Alistair are heading 300 miles south, to Devon, where they've heard about a young dealer
02:19who's finding rich pickings in this picturesque and rural county.
02:23This is beautiful here, isn't it?
02:25It is nice.
02:26Even we haven't got roads this bad, though, have we?
02:28No.
02:29A lot of North Wales was like this when I was a kid.
02:31Very overgrown is probably a way to describe it.
02:33Yeah.
02:34Great when you were a kid, though.
02:35Brilliant.
02:36Because you could have dens everywhere.
02:37Yeah.
02:38Absolutely ancient, isn't it?
02:39Wonderful.
02:40Yes, it's here.
02:41The market town of Ashburton was once a major trading center for the tin mining industry.
02:51Over recent decades, it's been known for its many antique shops, making it a perfect spot
02:56spot for digging up desirable furniture rare curios and decorative items in the heart of town
03:02in a nutshell antiques is owned by a young dealer with a reputation for unearthing local treasure
03:11i've had the shop here now for about eight years it's a lovely little town and there's
03:15lots of antique shops here so it's a great destination for antiques we're very lucky
03:21in devon and there's some beautiful properties up on dartmoor and near the coast and we're lucky to
03:26buy directly from these people privately a lot of good stock comes in that way in addition to the
03:32shop um i run a workshop as well with my business partner barry everything is restored up there and
03:37we've got a big storeroom attached to it there's even more stock up there as well probably more
03:42than there is in the shop all sorts hidden up away in the storeroom here we are in a nutshell antiques
03:51hello hello drew yeah lydia nice to meet you hello how are you doing good thank you good
03:58welcome lovely shop thank you nice very nice lots of nice things lots to see oh that's nice
04:08it's quite nice isn't it not a lovely thing where do you get this from i think that came in privately
04:12local we got a lot of really lovely local sort of private calls around here that's good isn't it
04:17yeah that's a bit all fresh yeah it's got a slightly sort of grand tour look always with the
04:22columns that sort of look yeah i particularly like this yeah is it heavy it looks quite light
04:29is it it's heavy enough to feel the quality yeah just a good desk toy isn't it there's a really nice
04:36little twin column thermometer looks very late 18th century into early 19th century english but what it
04:44has for me is a huge regency presence in the room and it was just designed for your desk or you know
04:51a shelf somewhere in the house so you've got 120 on that how much can that be yeah um i can let that
04:57go for 90. it's a good looking thing it is yes thank you very much great that's great that's good
05:03isn't it just straight through the door love stuff like that really love it and it's just a little
05:07handsome thing hand engraved um mercury still in it unbroken no damage at all but nice wear a handsome
05:17thing and under 100 quid there is a good profit left in that for me and it'll still be cheap to be
05:23perfectly honest with you i'm always fascinated by how this is going to sound terrible now how young
05:30people get into an antiques business i'll take young that's fine a lot of people think i'm a lot
05:35older than i am because of what i do really i'm 29 now and i've done this really for 10 years since
05:43i left school i ended up at an auction one day not there to buy anything or sell anything but i was
05:49fascinated by it there were some great people there that i met who were very kind to me and sort of
05:53discovered this crazy world world yeah yeah it is an odd world to be in yeah wow
06:02aren't those yeah they're just great where did you get these from just picked them up locally
06:07and i was just drawn to the monkeys and they're very crude look at this one yeah it's like a leaf
06:14yeah there's everything going for those the way this has been carved and there's the scale of them the
06:21scale of the leaf to the monkey you know the least the monkey's gonna be that big yeah they're just
06:25crazy love them hand carving scenes and figures from tropical hardwood is a centuries-old african
06:33tradition these examples are carved in relief so the images are raised from the flat background
06:39probably dating from the mid-20th century drew thinks this playful pairing could be worth around 195
06:46pounds every now and again i'll see something i'll just fall in love with it and go i can't believe
06:51i found that they're great aren't they they're brilliant aren't they i'm a bit envious you picked
06:56these up actually i like the back of them as well you can see that they've all been
07:01hand done yeah yeah african hardwood carvings 45 quid each they are just great can i buy those please
07:09you can thank you very much they're great that is you know everything i'm always going on about you
07:15can buy great antiques for not a lot of money that's it bosh that make you smile as well and that's
07:20yeah yeah exactly they're just brilliant god i love those thank you very much not letting go of those
07:31sometimes an item will just emanate a feeling and a presence in the room and it can be for something
07:39that's a fiver it really can i'm drawn to them those dogs over there oh yeah they're nice aren't
07:47they yeah they're lovely they're really nice yeah can i have a look at one yeah yeah but that's a nice
07:52size they're in great condition as well no damages no repairs what's on them with you 350 on the pair
08:01i'd buy those they're great spot a pair of dogs the dogs are always popular a while ago i bought an oil
08:09painting of some greyhounds put it online and the response was brilliant i didn't realize there were
08:16so many people out there who collect greyhounds and they're a good pair the size they're just simple
08:24and very attractive so you've got three 350 on those best on them you can have those for 270
08:42drew and alistair are in the south devon town of ashburn lydia nice to meet you where they've had a tip
08:48off about a young dealer with a shop filled with locally sourced treasure lovely shop thank you
08:54very much lots of nice things alistair is putting his money on a desirable pair of greyhound statues
09:01and he's hoping to get a deal over the line it could be the best on them 270. yeah i'm happy at that
09:08yeah definitely yeah lovely very much thank you that's great they are really really really like them
09:14very cool a bit jealous you spotted those first sorry put them back up there for now they are very
09:20very nice they're very drew they're very now he liked them i'm sure on the way home he's gonna try
09:27and buy those greyhounds but i think i can get good money for them i've got good collectors for that type
09:32of thing but we'll have a chat having searched the shop drew and alistair are keen to see lydia's
09:40workshop and storerooms located a short drive away welcome come on in oh hello
09:48that's nice this is where the magic happens this is a little workshop fab alistair that's a bit of
09:54you isn't it very much so mate that's a little bit of a project that one um yeah yeah yes it's nice
10:01it's it's lived a life that one remains of green paint oh is it elm or ash god elm it's so often
10:12with those cricket tables that they they have had a little bit of a hard life they call cricket tables
10:17three legs three cricket sumps i've not had many like this it's smaller triple stretcher on the bottom
10:24and the top is beautiful it's elm the wear on it's good a nice cricket table but it's got its problems
10:35how much is that exactly as it is there 80 pounds 80 pounds 80 pounds the cheapest cricket table you'll
10:41ever buy i've never bought it yeah no that is a bargain i know it needs but there's a lot of work
10:46it'll be a nice thing thank you that's all right thank you very much that is lovely i'm a bit pig sick
10:52but it but it's very you that wins and loses mate try and help it thank you very much all right one leg
11:00don't know if it needs replacing it needs a lot of work the top there's a notch come out of it
11:06it's got to be done right it's covered in wax but there's a remains of green paint it needs to be
11:11stripped back bleached it is a good thing and it's only going to get better
11:16here you go come on in guys
11:24tell me about these the boats the half blocks yeah they came uh locally down from dartmouth
11:32right so we're not far from the coast here and they were in the boardroom of a company down there
11:38there's a lot of history on the boats on the plaques and also at the other end as well about
11:43the maker i think they were made around the sort of 50s yeah they're not old ones are they no not as
11:48old as you'd like them to be i really wish they were yeah i know yes that would have been well made
11:53though yeah yeah yeah owners jay gould george gould venezuelan venezuelan navy venezuelan navy
12:011902 to 1950 yeah and that's why i think they were probably made around the 50s because it's got
12:071950 on there yeah before then have you done anything to them absolutely nothing no they're
12:13exactly as i picked them up haven't been here long and they just haven't got down to the shop because
12:18they are so big yeah and they need putting properly up on the wall they're very heavy they're
12:23nice they're designed by a william cramp and son built in 1883 powered by two scotch boilers
12:33william cramp and sons was one of the most famous american shipbuilding firms
12:38making ocean liners and battleships for the united states navy in 1883 the company builds a 200-foot
12:45steam yacht for the controversial railway magnet jay gould one of the richest men in america it was later
12:51sold to the venezuelan navy continuing in service until 1950 crafted from mahogany these commemorative
12:59half holes have historical interest and collectability drew thinks they could be worth around 900 pounds
13:08the real real ones are um were made of actual boats and then they were put on the the wall so they
13:16were all individual boats with different names but they are incredibly collectible very valuable
13:22some of them because the boat names you can trace the history etc etc etc you like them yeah
13:29how much are they if they went down to the shop i i'd probably be asking around sort of 800 for the pair
13:36i could let them go for 700.
13:37yeah yeah great thank you they're very well made there's a pair of the same size and they
13:47were 700 quid now you know let's not be stupid there's money to be made there these you
13:56how many there's four of those and they have all got the galleries have they yeah they're uh
14:02in here they've only just come in so i haven't had a chance to do anything with them there's a gallery
14:10oh nice they all match yes absolutely all the same where'd they come from chapel
14:16i bought them at an antique fair recently and the gentleman said he got them from yorkshire but wasn't
14:22specific jefferson moonstone made in canada these lamps were made in and around the latter part of the
14:3019th century mostly early 20th century jefferson moonstone so it's jefferson the maker moonstone
14:37the sort of model and type of glass they've used just great quality they give off a really lovely
14:43light nice things and four of them happy days they're all in the same nick yeah yes yeah i'm sure
14:50they are what would you like for those uh for the four i'd need to see 500. if they're all the same as
14:56that and there's no cracks and all the galleries match yes great lovely we'll get them out and check
15:00thank you they're an interesting thing yeah they always chip around there they'll crack here
15:06right and you can hardly notice it just gotta be careful with those but that's it yeah as long as
15:11that's all right you're good to go excellent moonstone pendants very good quality four of them in there
15:18all the same size with matching galleries and a bit of chain and the ceiling hooks for 500 pounds well
15:24you can't look a gift horse in the mouth i just had to say yes if lydia's making a profit fine it's
15:30dealer to dealer i have to just let it be and go okay fine um right i think we need to load up sort
15:37out some cash great i'll give these lamps the once over yeah and that's it done go great thank you very
15:44much thank you let's get let's get moving thank you cheers lots to load up really good day in ashburton
15:51bought some nice things met lydia uh yeah it was great the jefferson moonstone lights great you know
15:58i always want those the little thermometer i mean that's a straightforward easy seller i can double
16:04my money on it and that's fine but i absolutely love the monkey carvings i thought they were wonderful
16:11wonderful things you just don't have to spend lots of money to buy great things really good things
16:18very very happy with today and the prices have been good the thing that's got me most excited today
16:23has got to be that cricket table it's good it's rare that was worth coming here just for that alone
16:30it's that good it's been a great day lovely to meet you thank you lovely thanks a lot thank you all right
16:36we'll see you again yeah thanks guys happy day very good all good yeah really really good the trade
16:49needs it it needs 29 29 she's been in the business nearly a decade already god you know got her own
16:57shop making a success of it got a restorer got storage selling stuff to the trade yeah well done round of
17:05applause to lydia and it was all good stuff wasn't it very very good and you're happy yeah i liked the
17:11little out of everything you bought i liked the monkeys they were brilliant aren't they just great
17:21it's been a great start to the buying trip and drew and alistair are now heading 200 miles across the
17:27south of england towards west sussex they've received another tip-off about two new dealers who've
17:33turned their love for antiques and salvage into a second career so we're off to crawley today mate
17:40peace pottage peace pottage peace pottage crawley what what is peace pottage don't know peace pottage
17:46i've never heard of peace but it sounds like food yeah two guys clarence and jerry who um run libby
17:53libby li double b i they've got a little reclamation yard and they sell antiques and interiors
18:00i think they've been going for a couple of years now oh very new are they very new yeah
18:06the name peace pottage is believed to originate from the days of horse transport
18:11and the thick pea soup served to travelers on the london to brighton road
18:17today the village's proximity to the motorway makes this an ideal location for a new venture
18:22started by two locals who've turned their interest in collecting antiques and salvage into a business
18:30and i was a grade two listed builder and during that process we collected so much stuff you wouldn't
18:38believe it old beams bars everything and one day my son who worked for me joseph he said dad you've
18:44got so much gear you need to get rid of it i was a trained teacher and about two years ago i stepped
18:50away from teaching but i've always collected items over the years i had two garages full of stuff and it so
18:57happened that i stumbled across jerry and the relationship was born thereafter and i've spent
19:02what two and a half years trying to shake you off and just can't get i'm still here you're still here
19:07to me this business is a treasure hunt i get up in the morning and don't know what we're going to
19:11find but the best part of it is going out and finding the stuff you know we go under the radar find
19:16nice things and put them in here and that's it really that's nice it's a bit like that tin man isn't
19:24it well this it's a roof vent it's a dovecot it is now but it's a roof vent off old chapel
19:33mind a step hello good morning good morning how you doing hi i'm clarence true nice to meet you
19:40how are you doing clarence hi jerry i'm jerry nice warm hands were you jerry all right nice
19:45done thank you well thank you very much for having us this is lovely it is thank you guys good location
19:51but also libby yeah where's that come from my wife's name so her name was liby l-i-b-b-y i took
19:58a while put an eye there and we got libby and seems to have caught on people like the name
20:04that's nice friendly friendly yeah so we'll have a quick look around yeah of course obviously there's a
20:10lot of pluses for having a partnership because you've got an infusion of two different styles you know
20:17it's very vibrant yet there's a lot of furniture here but there's a lot of art this color and you
20:23can tell it's a mix of two people's tastes just coming together look at that al you've got two of
20:30them that's echo no no it's a single one it's a solid yeah why is the time right in front of me
20:36it's a really nice really nice pedestal i'm looking at god god that's good it's an alabaster and i'm
20:43thinking this is a good thing you know and you you must learn to in this business recognize quality
20:50wherever you find it it's one of a pair yeah pedestals or multiple pedestals sort of your full-on
20:56period deco designed to display a sculpture or bust this plinth angular form is typical of the art
21:05deco period of the 1920s and 30s building materials such as marble and alabaster were used at the time
21:12inspired by the architecture of ancient egypt and rome this stylish plinth appears to have french
21:19providence and is made with expensive materials drew thinks it could be worth around 500 pounds
21:25interesting thing what you're asking for this piece is 300
21:40drew and alistair are in west sussex where they've been tipped off about a promising new antique
21:45partnership is this lovely it is drew's got his hopes up over a high quality plinth
21:51but he needs to get it for the right price interesting thing what you're asking for it
21:56this piece is 300. where'd you get it from just someone turned up with it it's a strange one to be
22:02an alabaster yeah it's not solid alabaster as well these are sheets this is sheet alabaster probably
22:07around a bit concrete yeah um any room for negotiation yeah of course oh it's nice always got it's always a
22:15bit of room for negotiation would you take 250 for it yeah is that all right thank you very much
22:22thank you thank you chaps thank you first fab i buy a lot of these and i'll use it for putting a
22:26bronze on or putting it something on to sell it you know to to photograph it fabulous scale great
22:33color highly original and clearly of a very high quality is there a profit to be made if i sold it
22:38straight on definitely will it earn its keep by being putting things on it and selling it in that way
22:44yeah it'll do both of those yeah unusual thing really not my sort of thing but you cannot ignore
22:50quality i like the look of that over there jerry what's that i think it's like a a a the a a badge
22:59sorry that's very nice you don't like it you don't like it lovely there's an a a badge an a marker
23:08badge so these were post markers in probably the 1930s along the highway along the road and they had
23:16the cat's eyes in them so they lit up when the car lights hit them it's a scarce thing this is good
23:22because it retains its original paint it hasn't been over painted the surface is right formed in 1905
23:3010 years after the first motor cars were sold in the uk the automobile association was established in
23:36reaction to new laws imposed on motorists teams of aa cyclists were mobilized alerting members to
23:42speed restrictions and thousands of warning signs were erected highlighting roadside dangers dating
23:48from the 1920s or 30s cast iron signs such as this are prized by collectors and if sold in his shop or
23:55online alistair thinks it could be worth around 500 pounds they are a lot of money i'll be on i'll be
24:02honest with you what was the we're on 450 on yeah i mean yeah they are expensive i mean online they're
24:08the cheapest we've seen that 800 quid and it's uh obviously it's an original yeah they can range
24:17can't they from 200 yeah yeah yeah on condition there's the brackets are missing off the band yeah
24:22but i think it's yeah it's on the money pretty much in it and that's your best is it
24:27well make me an offer alistair um i can't get near that i was more like uh i think i'd be on at
24:36three at the most for that could we take three for it squeeze three two five we'd be slightly more
24:44happy with that what do you reckon it's not worth arguing over 25 quid yeah who do i shake
24:51clarence it's a good thing that's a nice thing i mean there's there's a bit left in it al paid up for
24:58it it's a very very interesting thing and it's right yeah yeah there's loads of copies it's right yes
25:04it's the real and it's got all the cut size yeah yeah these things appeal to all the motor enthusiasts
25:12you know it's a great topic the market for that is really really strong all the time people with old
25:20garages people with old cars people collect enamel signs and yeah it's very collectible
25:26you saw something on the way yeah look outside of course in your garden yeah yeah sure yeah
25:34that's what i was looking at you probably had a few of these weren't you i have it's a roof vent
25:39and come off chapels and schools and public buildings and then somebody's turned it into a
25:44dove cut yeah that was converted in the 1980s yeah by the engineer yeah it's a lovely piece they
25:50usually they've got a brass maker's mark on them yeah there you go in london yeah yeah yeah there you
25:57go that's it nice it's just something a little bit different aren't it yeah your sort of thing yeah
26:04that's interesting isn't it it's just nice it's been converted isn't it yes yeah yeah what have you got on
26:09that so 50 200 yeah we can work with 200 yeah yeah yeah that's fair a little bit of work yeah yeah
26:18it's all right happy days very folky you know not really done by a craftsman but that's what was
26:24appealing about it my friend is a blacksmith he'll give it the once over there's a little bit of rot
26:31i think on the sill but overall it's just got a good look um happy yeah done mate thank you very
26:40much guys can we go and do some money yeah it's been a pleasure sir thank you let's go and have
26:44a sort this out yeah it's been a right laugh with jerry and clarence i've got to be honest with you
26:51and i would suggest anybody should come down here ask him for a cup of tea and sit around for a chat
26:55and buy a few things as well because it is not just a shop it's an experience it's a day out
27:01thoroughly enjoyed today um clarence and jerry great guys what they've got going on here
27:07it's brilliant and they're just at the beginning of their journey in this crazy world of antiques you
27:13know and i wish them luck loads of luck they deserve it thanks chaps thank you much appreciate it
27:20it's been a great day thank you very much thank you thank you nice to meet you okay thank you take
27:25care see you later cheers we had an absolute brilliant day with drew and alistair great blokes
27:32it's been a pleasure working with both of the guys and we've learned an awful lot today but when
27:36somebody within the business comes along for the first time and say wow you know you guys are doing
27:41well great space we've got that's a hell of an endorsement and we actually appreciate that
27:45there you go that was fun nice fellas great guys enjoy yourself i did yeah they've got a good thing
27:53going there uh that little a uh postmark i think you're onto a winner with that they've got to be
27:57quite rare as well yeah yeah it's cool for drew and al the new contacts they've made through their
28:04trade tip-offs have paid off but the buying trip's not over they're making a long journey north to
28:10darlington in county durham drew's keen to be the first through the door at an antiques warehouse
28:17off the beaten track owned by someone he's discovered through his dealer contacts
28:23you know who we're going to see today the chair finder william carr william carr in darling yeah
28:29yeah near there he works from the family farm so you've met him before yeah i met him at a fair up
28:33north very good fair he's a grafter he's obsessed with the job and he loves chairs he's obsessed with
28:40cheers yeah and today is the first time we're going to go and see him at his warehouse
28:48until the early 19th century darlington was a rural town known for its historic market area
28:54and norman churches but when george stevenson's steam locomotive raced into town it was transformed
29:00into a place of bustling railway workshops a few miles away located on his family's farm one young
29:07dealer has been setting up his own workshop dedicated to first class seating
29:16i deal predominantly in 18th and 19th century chairs but i do however have a go at just about
29:22anything that tickles my pickle along the way i founded chair finder in 2021 but it's only been the
29:29last two years where i've gone full time at it and i'm living the dream really well my dream anyway
29:36since i was a little boy i was visiting lots of antique shops in the area with my father and it
29:41just all developed from there really the my passion for it i'm delighted to have drew and alistair come
29:47to there i really hope there's a few things that can have a go at and we can have a few deals yeah
29:54well hey drew all right mate nice to see you thank you you're well how are you doing
29:57how's that you all right mate yeah i'm very good thank you you've not met before have you no no it's
30:01time first time so through here will i'll bring you through to the unrestored selection first
30:08well most of it is oh good what a cracking workshop you're gonna do all for sale yeah barring that
30:13little pile there on the left hand side they are sold unfortunately oh that's a shame i met will at
30:19an antiques fair up north and i saw what he was doing i was really really impressed he's thrown
30:25everything into it packed in what he was doing that is a good looking chair he sold his car he sold this
30:31that and the other but everything into stock and he's given it his best and for that reason i will
30:36always you know give somebody my attention if they're going to go that far yeah
30:46just benefit from a bit of re-velveting wouldn't it yeah but it's nice very nicely made yeah
30:53not unusual to see them re-velveted either so that never looks too out of place does it really
30:59so what are you going to do without you going to strip all this horrible i was good this is
31:02the recovery yeah a bit of a project pile also but absolutely happy to sell that and leave that to
31:08you if you if you would like to thank you it's not a bad job no tucked away in the back there's a
31:15bobbin table the legs shaped like bobbins three legs late 19th century the top has got like a sort of
31:23sticky formica material over it so originally it would have had a velvet or a base on the top just like
31:30the tier underneath they'd have matched and it would have had stud work around the sides you can
31:36have that for 40 pounds alistair 40 pounds 40 pounds i'll just shake my hand god almighty 40
31:42pounds 40 pounds 40 pounds will no there's a bit to do then it leaves plenty for you doesn't it
31:50yeah wow you can get an extra nice velvet now yes you can put a little frill on it and everything can't
31:55you really go to town and really go to town on that get the right velvet the right stud
32:00work to ground the sides and basically just feed the wood and give it a mellow wax and it's ready to go
32:08these are nice yeah good form can be very reasonable if you're interested
32:18holland one of my favorite makers really good quality it would remind me of like mercedes or
32:25something like that because they're just really well built yeah just dead right proper stuff proper
32:29stuff holland and sons chairs is one of the things that will wants to show us they've just come in
32:34they're on the bench they're nice they're really really nice see a little bit of woodworm to the back
32:39rail and they need reupholstering and there's only two and all these things and i think no they're not for
32:44me but anything by holland really interests me because their name is bandied around by people who know
32:56founded in the early 19th century holland and sons were cabinet makers to queen victoria
33:02supplying items to osborne house and windsor castle as well as the houses of parliament
33:06this pair of gothic revival style chairs need reupholstering and are less valuable than a set
33:13of six or eight but with their prestigious makers stamp ellister thinks they could still be worth
33:18around 450 pounds quite nice on the calico just these it's not a big job to whip that off no
33:26and they'll look quite nice like that 180 if you're interested it's for nothing really
33:32what do you think i think they're a gift yeah yeah not you not right now i've just got lots and lots
33:40and lots of okay yeah you're not going to find a better quality chair the holland and sun chairs drew
33:47convinced me they were a good buy he knows his stuff he's been in the game long enough and it's good to
33:54buy something different this is the main showroom really oh that's nice will this is more lots and
34:01lots of nice things yeah i thought you might like that nice where did you get this will um just came
34:07off a an old school antiques dealer okay let's have a look-see okay so it's had a bit done
34:1890 good yes it's a two-tiered kashmiri uh occasional table so with these kashmiri tables right there's
34:26really good ones there's mediocre ones and there's the rest this one is getting towards the top end
34:33of it it's in that area so the form when you look at it it's perfect in every single way it's all bang
34:40on but it's the decoration the decoration is superb this table is typical of the style made in cashmere
34:50a region of territorial conflict between india and pakistan centuries ago traders from central
34:56asia and persia brought papier mache handcraft to the area a delicate process of building layers of
35:02moistened paper pulp which are then hand painted with intricate designs whereas smaller decorative
35:08objects are common larger items of furniture are rarer meaning drew thinks this table could be worth
35:14around 2 000 pounds what are you looking for as well see this blue wash underneath here this blue
35:22finish underneath here right this is really important that you can see this this is original you can see
35:26it's had the odd bit of restoration and re-gluing and this that and the other it doesn't really matter
35:31how much is that it's got to be 1400 okay
35:34in county durham drew and alistair are visiting a young dealer they've discovered through their
35:48trade contacts you can have that for 40 pounds alistair 40 40 40 pounds i'll just shake down god almighty
35:56drew's handling over a highly desirable handcrafted side table that has a price tag to match
36:01how much is that it's got to be 1400 okay color's just lovely isn't it you're making money yeah
36:10there's enough in it there for sure yeah thank you thank you very much these little cashmere side
36:15tables are highly prized because they're extremely beautiful these look good wherever you put them
36:21they hold their value like bilio and they just look great you've got great things thank you really
36:28great things really good they will what's that oh it's interesting what is it that might belong to
36:34my brother that oh is it but i'm sure he won't mind what is it you got it yeah you're good yep i know
36:44what that is it's the tailboard off of a cart yeah yeah that's right yeah i haven't looked at that for
36:52about 10 years cool that's a nice one i'm sure he had intentions to put it in his children's bedroom
36:58but that hasn't happened so it's fair game now brother you love kicking in yeah yeah is he bigger
37:05than you yes well you're on your own mate only a little bit though i'd still have a go there's a
37:11painted panel and it's folky it's naive it's very me and it's will's brothers and it's great it's
37:20definitely continental probably italian it's vibrant that's a great piece of wall art the best thing
37:28about you selling chairs is look all of a sudden look what you got on that oh what's your brother got
37:33on that well i think you'd be fine with 120 for that it's worth a go that isn't it it's a no-brainer
37:40isn't it no problem 120 pounds for the panel brilliant there's money left in that will's been
37:49more than fair with his pricing today he's looked after us but that's what we do in the trade we look
37:55after each other we make sure everybody's got a bit left in it we've seen everything yes yeah so it's
38:02either pack up now or tea and cake tea and cake i think tea and care all right sounds good thank you
38:11i've had a fantastic time today at will's place i really like him he's the real deal this job is
38:18not really a job it's a lifestyle and it's a great life and i really hope will
38:25carries on and i wish him all the success that he is definitely deserves great to see you again thank you
38:31very much for the business i really appreciate it thank you very much i'll see you soon cheers bye
38:37i've had a fantastic day today yeah it's been um everything i could have wished for they are about
38:43the first dealers really to ever come here so it's been really nice to have them walk around and see
38:49everything and take it all in and give me the feedback yeah you're right he was a nice lad isn't
38:57he brilliant very fair too he's got everything going for him he just needs to keep doing it as
39:03long as i'm doing business i hope i'm going to be able to do business with him
39:10after a busy week on the road alistair is back in west wales where he's getting his
39:15buys prepped for sale the first job is to investigate the bobbin table he bought in durham
39:21he needs to strip back the modern vinyl covering the top to check the condition of the wood underneath
39:30okay so that comes off quite easy now
39:38as you can see the grain is lifted it's split in places from seeing what i can see now we're
39:45going to recover this but there's no point putting a new piece of cloth on it it'll just stick out like
39:50a sore thumb i want it in keeping with that that's my work done let's take it to the restorer now and
39:57they can finish it off to help restore the table alistair has sent it to the nearby workshop of regular
40:04restorer ali wright an upholsterer with years of experience in dealing with antique furniture
40:11this fabric is some that we've previously salvaged so it does need a bit of a wipe it's a bit dusty
40:18but he wanted old so we're giving him old the fabric is going to be attached underneath underneath here
40:26with some um traditional upholstery tacks so we'll give a bit more there so we're sort of 75
40:33so we'll have like a square 75 by 75
40:36after cutting the velvet to size ali uses contact adhesive to both fabric and wood top
40:46to ensure a solid bond before smoothing out any air pockets to get the fabric to come round
40:54and to lie nicely i'm going to have to put some angled cuts in here
41:00but as you can see we've got some excess fabric in here so that's our mark there that's the top
41:06so basically we want to bring our cut just down there
41:19okay after applying more adhesive ali can check if the fabric is fitting neatly to the sides
41:26that's sitting beautifully on there now that's glued down nicely i'm going to put a few tacks in
41:33to make sure it stays in place
41:35i think five per panel is fine
41:46i'm going to just trim the excess off
41:47then so whilst the table is upside down i'm just going to take this bottom shelf off
41:57and then we'll follow exactly the same process for this bit as for the top of the table
42:02the only thing we've got to do now to finish the top is to put some upholstery nails around the edges
42:07these are going in beautifully
42:18okay the last one has just gone in and now we're just going to flip the table over
42:27beautiful i really hope alistair likes this
42:30once the shelf has been completed the table will be joining alistair's other finds in his shop
42:37proof of a great week of new buys and tip-offs
42:41when you hear about a new dealer it's very important go pay them a visit
42:45this game we're in it's very trady we all work with each other we all sell different things
42:52no problem very very important to stay in contact with them put them in your phone thank you thank you
42:57very much because one day you will need each other you find different things you do deals together
43:03it's all about helping one another jerry and clarence two relatively new dealers in the trade
43:08great couple of guys you know great setup and i bought that massive dovecot and it sold within a
43:14day a couple from north wales came down to pay us a visit the wife really liked it went into the back
43:20of the car now it's living in north wales oh hello welcome come on in in a nutshell antiques again
43:25another good trade call i found that fabulous cheese top cricket table it's a rare piece of
43:32country furniture that and it's right up my street the more people you meet within this trade the
43:37better the more business it generates this is a very tradie business we're in use each other help each
43:45other out
