00:01:00The End
00:01:30Germany, April 1945, behind the Allied lines.
00:01:40One of the most fantastic incidents to come out of World War II
00:01:43is contained in United States counterintelligence secret periodic report number 262 of the 12th Corps.
00:01:50During the closing days of the war, the desperate Nazi high command secretly sent units of highly specialized troops behind the Allied lines.
00:01:59Some were dropped by parachute in small units.
00:02:02Others infiltrated on foot.
00:02:04Many wore American uniforms and spoke English fluently.
00:02:08These men, calling themselves werewolves after an old Germanic legend of humans who could transform themselves into bloodthirsty wolves,
00:02:16were suicide commandos with the avowed purpose of spreading death and destruction.
00:02:21The dedicated mission of one such unit was the assassination of the Allied Chief of Staff, General Dwight D. Eisenhower.
00:02:29Our story begins almost four years earlier, in New York City, on the day that we'll live in infamy.
00:02:38December 7, 1941.
00:02:40508, 50, 50, 307, 327, a dollar.
00:02:4560, 4, dollar.
00:02:483, 3, 3, 3, 2 dollars.
00:02:50Uh…
00:02:51Harry, hold it a minute.
00:03:01Hey, I thought all the girls went home.
00:03:09I was suddenly taken drunk.
00:03:12Hey, Harry, I'll call you back.
00:03:13My next-door neighbor dropped in for a cup of sugar.
00:03:21I sure don't remember seeing you last night.
00:03:25And I never forget a face.
00:03:27What's your name?
00:03:29Ruby, what's yours?
00:03:31Steve.
00:03:32Well, don't call me, Steve.
00:03:35I'll call you.
00:03:36Oh, wait a minute, wait a minute.
00:03:38Stick around, I'll send out for coffee.
00:03:40That kind of an offer can turn a girl's head.
00:03:43Well, how about a drink?
00:03:44I never could say no to a bookie.
00:03:47Bookie, me?
00:03:49Oh, you mean...
00:03:50No, I was just going over my arithmetic homework with an old classmate.
00:03:56Make yourself at home.
00:03:57And although the first reports of the bombing of Pearl Harbor are fragmentary,
00:04:08it's believed the loss of American life and damage to property is appalling.
00:04:12Did you hear that?
00:04:13Somebody bombed Pearl Harbor.
00:04:15Oh.
00:04:17Get some music.
00:04:18It's not yet known how much damage was done to Hickam Field or which naval vessels were birthed at Pearl Harbor.
00:04:24This station will cut in on any program throughout the day to keep our listeners posted.
00:04:28Hey, I said get some music.
00:04:29Coming in on the teletype, this one is dateline.
00:04:32Pearl Harbor must be an American city.
00:04:34He's talking about American ships.
00:04:36All right, so it's American and I'm bleeding.
00:04:39That's a funny thing to say.
00:04:42All right, how's this?
00:04:43Array for the red, white, and blue.
00:04:45You satisfied?
00:04:46Here, you just try this for size.
00:04:49Like I said, I never could say no to a bookie.
00:04:54Well, that's good because we'll make this a day to remember.
00:04:59It's $2.32 a dollar, $1.44 a half a dollar.
00:05:06And that's it, Harry.
00:05:08Well, sure, I know business has fallen off, but look, some of my best customers are in uniform.
00:05:14Who, me?
00:05:16No, don't you worry about me being drafted.
00:05:18My number's right near the bottom of the list, and I ain't rubbing any skin off my elbow joining up.
00:05:24Hey, Harry, I'll call you back later.
00:05:27Yeah, my next door neighbor.
00:05:29All right, take it easy, Ruby.
00:05:37Daddy's on his way.
00:05:41Okay, Daddy.
00:05:42You're on your way, all right, to the lockup.
00:05:46This is just what we need to clinch it.
00:05:49The book of numbers.
00:05:51Thanks, Bowman.
00:05:52Well, uh, who tipped you off about me?
00:05:54You shouldn't try to shortchange your customers and blame it on the war.
00:05:59They don't like it.
00:06:01Look, uh, maybe we can fix it up, huh?
00:06:03Well, let's go.
00:06:11Let's go.
00:06:12Let's go.
00:06:13Let's go.
00:06:13Let's go.
00:06:17How'd you make out?
00:06:18Oh, it was a pushover.
00:06:19Oh, bet.
00:06:19Yeah, all I had to do was promise the judge I'd join the army.
00:06:22Are you going to?
00:06:23Are you going to?
00:06:31What, are you kidding?
00:06:31Come on, let's get out of here.
00:06:31Okay, Bowman.
00:06:32You and I are going.
00:06:33Bye-bye.
00:06:34What did you make out?
00:06:35Oh, it was a pushover.
00:06:36I'll bet.
00:06:37Yeah, all I had to do was promise the judge I'd join the army.
00:06:40Are you going to?
00:06:41What, are you kidding?
00:06:42Come on, let's get out of here.
00:06:48Okay, Bolin, you and I are going bye-bye.
00:06:51Get your dirty paws off me.
00:06:53I beat the rap in there, didn't I?
00:06:55Sure.
00:06:56All right.
00:06:57But the judge asked me to keep you company as far as the recruiting office.
00:07:01Soldier boy.
00:07:02So let's get going.
00:07:20You find it pretty interesting reading, Chaplin, the Steve Bolin story?
00:07:24Eight weeks in the army, in hot water, five times.
00:07:28So they don't give me a good conduct, Ribbon.
00:07:31Hey, maybe they'll even kick me out here on me, huh?
00:07:34Is that what you're after, Steven?
00:07:35I didn't ask to get in, did I?
00:07:37What about your duty to your country?
00:07:39What duty?
00:07:40Look, Chaplin, why don't you peddle your Bible to somebody that wants it?
00:07:45I'm trying to help you, Steven.
00:07:47Oh, you're trying to help me?
00:07:49All right, I'll make a deal with you, Chaplin.
00:07:52You get your big boss up there to snap his almighty fingers and say, uh, Steve Bolin, you're no longer in a clink.
00:08:03You ain't even in uniform.
00:08:05You're back home with your girl, Ruby, and you're out on a town living it up like you used to.
00:08:09You do that, Chaplin, and I'll yell amen with the best of them.
00:08:16Smoke?
00:08:18No man is born with bitterness in his heart.
00:08:23Oh, he heard that pitch about how all men are created equal.
00:08:30Sometimes the hurt and frustrations of a hard childhood can cause it.
00:08:35Oh, are you kidding?
00:08:37Until I was 15, I let a sheltered life.
00:08:39My governess wouldn't let anybody near me outside my tutors.
00:08:44Hurt, you said, huh?
00:08:46You know, Chaplin, that was a luxury we couldn't afford.
00:08:49We were too busy trying to stay alive.
00:08:51And if you get out your fiddle,
00:08:54I'll just sing you some more of that.
00:08:59Like, uh,
00:09:01when I was a kid,
00:09:03I used to wait for the bakery wagon.
00:09:06You know, if I didn't steal a couple of rolls that morning, we just didn't eat.
00:09:11And it seemed like it was all of a sudden I was no more a kid.
00:09:16Maybe I was never a kid, I don't know.
00:09:21I didn't have any trades or training or learning of any kind.
00:09:27What am I telling you?
00:09:28So you became a gambler.
00:09:30A bookie.
00:09:31You know about that.
00:09:32It's all here, Steven.
00:09:34Reform school.
00:09:35Ever.
00:09:37So what did you expect, Chaplin?
00:09:39A lawyer?
00:09:40A doctor?
00:09:42An engineer, maybe, huh?
00:09:43I'm going to pray for you, Steven.
00:09:49You know, for a man that doesn't believe in gambling,
00:09:52you sure put your money on a long shot.
00:09:54I'm going to pray that you find your reason for being.
00:09:57Reason for being?
00:09:59What's that supposed to mean?
00:10:01God put every one of us on this earth for a purpose.
00:10:03Perhaps before this terrible war is over, you'll find yours.
00:10:09Come on, let it rise, let it rise.
00:10:10You can't wait if you don't let it.
00:10:11Here's five more, Steven.

00:10:20You can't wait if you don't let it.
00:10:21You can't wait if you don't let it.
00:10:22Here's five more, Steven.

00:15:49Yeah, well, they didn't have a book that I wanted. I'll wait till I write down an address here before I forget it.
00:15:54Every time we get a pass to come to London, you come over here and pick up some books.
00:15:58But I haven't ever seen you read them, haven't I?
00:16:05I can't read them. You see, they're in code. I'm on a secret mission for the War Department.
00:16:12You are?
00:16:13Yeah. I'm supposed to spread...
00:16:15I'm supposed to spread goodwill among our English cousins.
00:16:20Don't make no sense to me, but I reckon if you say so, why?
00:16:29Another time, Jonesy. This is a one-man mission.
00:16:32I still don't think that's no Linden Library.
00:16:42Hold it, fella. Your papers.
00:16:51What do you do with those books?
00:16:58Well, you know what they say? You join the army and learn.

00:18:01There's other things besides money.
00:18:05Well, not for me, there ain't.
00:18:07You know, a man in this racket can either be the happiest soldier in the army or the richest.
00:18:11I like the richest.

00:18:17Well, tell me what you got.

00:20:27These wise guys got a good idea.
00:20:29Stay in a nice, safe guardhouse.
00:20:31Even without pay.
00:20:33Yeah, a real good idea.
00:20:36Especially when you're yellow.
00:20:43Hey, cut!
00:20:48Don't you know that a guard attack like that
00:20:50has the right to shoot?
00:20:51Well, he's got no right to ride me
00:20:52every time he's on guard duty.
00:20:54Boland, you reckon this army's been a disgrace?
00:20:58So kick me out.
00:21:01You've been angling for that
00:21:02since the first day you were drafted.
00:21:03Won't work.
00:21:05I know your type.
00:21:06Dishonorable discharge wouldn't mean a thing to you.
00:21:09I'm going to keep you in my outfit
00:21:10if it takes a special act of Congress.
00:21:13We've got orders to get every able-bodied man
00:21:16available for immediate action.
00:21:17That even includes a bunch of goof-ups like this.
00:21:20I want every man here to report to his unit

00:26:11Get a load of Grandpa. You're not much older than I am.
00:26:14I was older than you the day after I was born.
00:26:17You want a cigarette?
00:26:18I don't smoke.
00:26:20That's figures.
00:26:22Did you hear the scuttlebutt? We're less than two miles from the Rhine.
00:26:24Wouldn't it be great if you and I were the first ones across?
00:26:27Yeah, great.
00:26:31Let's go, sir. We'll be right up front.
00:26:32What, you crazy?
00:26:33Hey, hey, take it back here.
00:26:57What are you trying to prove, Junior?
00:27:15Next time you might not be so good.
00:27:18So lucky.
00:27:27So you're a hero.
00:27:38Oh, you Chonesee, what's the matter with you?
00:27:41You can get yourself killed watching noon on a guy like that.
00:27:44It's twice as easy getting killed every when you stay out there.
00:27:47I got that crowd spotted, Bolin.
00:27:49I'm gonna drop this nice little Easter egg right under his tail, fellas.
00:27:53You know, you're a sucker.
00:27:56If you want me to, I'll ask him to move over.
00:27:58Make room for another hero.
00:28:00Shucks, fella. I ain't no hero.
00:28:03Bet their crowd machine gun is holding up her advance.
00:28:06You know our orders is to get to the next town.
00:28:09Wait a minute.
00:28:18Anybody of yours?
00:28:20I ain't got no buddies.
00:28:22Well, you got one now.
00:28:23Let's go.
00:28:24Cover me, huh?
00:28:43Look at those lovely crowds left us, huh?
00:28:45A honeymoon cottage.
00:28:47Hey!
00:28:51Guess who?
00:28:54Hey, we hit the jackpot this time.
00:28:59G.I. Cots.
00:29:01No wonder them crowds hated to leave this town.
00:29:03They never had it so good.
00:29:07After the places we've been sleeping in, we never had it so good either.
00:29:10If and I only had my Ma's goose feather mattress.
00:29:15Who needs a mattress?
00:29:20Man, I'm gonna sleep for a week.
00:29:23I think we ought to go out and scrounge around for some blankets and things, huh?
00:29:29Good idea. Let's...
00:29:33Let's go.
00:29:34Good idea.
00:29:35Let's go.
00:29:36Yeah.
00:29:38Good idea.
00:29:40Let's scrounge around.
00:29:41Let's go.
00:29:43Let's go.
00:29:44Let's go.
00:29:58So I got it all figured out, Jonesy.
00:29:59The boys pitch in a dollar a piece, think?
00:30:01And I want to guess the exact day, hour and minute the first American soldier in Berlin wins the jackpot.
00:30:08Well, it sounds good, Steve, but how are you gonna find the exact minute?
00:30:14I don't. There's no winner.
00:30:17That's too bad, huh?
00:30:20Oh, come on. Come on.
00:30:22Let's go.
00:30:27Hello.
00:30:30Well...
00:30:32Hello.
00:30:38Do you want a cigarette?
00:30:40I think that can be arranged.
00:30:43Come on, Steve. Now, you're gonna get in trouble.
00:30:47Well, that's kind of trouble I like.
00:30:52Hey, this is quite a menu for a line. Now, if we had a couple bottles of beer.
00:31:00You put a steak beer?
00:31:03Now, wait a minute. What's the hurry?
00:31:05Please, let me go.
00:31:06Oh, you'll speak and see English, huh?
00:31:08That'll make it easier.
00:31:09Please.
00:31:10Now, look. Take it easy. If you don't like beer, I think I know why I could get a little cognac.
00:31:15You have believed I won't get lost, huh?
00:31:19Much thanks to you for stopping her.
00:31:22You mean she's on the lamp?
00:31:23No, no lamp.
00:31:25Bread, potato. She stole it from my house.
00:31:29What are you gonna do with it?
00:31:31Turn her over to the authorities.
00:31:34It pains me, but what else can I do?
00:31:36Well, here, you rub a little of this on your wounds. Maybe the pain will go away.
00:31:42I'll beat it.
00:31:43Go on, beat it.
00:31:49I could still rustle up that cognac.
00:31:53Why not?
00:31:55My place is around the corner.
00:31:57Sorry, Jonasy. There's only two straws with this bottle.
00:32:01Now, Steve, you go and get yourself into another gym.
00:32:04You know the rule against fraternization.
00:32:07Yeah, I know the rule, but nobody ever explained to me what the word fraternization means.
00:32:11I'll see you, Jonasy.
00:32:16What does it mean?
00:32:25I'm sorry I don't have more to offer you.
00:32:28I'll take my chances with what you got.
00:32:34Uh, what's your name?
00:32:38Ilsa.
00:32:40Oh, my instead.
00:32:43Where did you learn to speak English so good?
00:32:45My brother lived in America for a long time.
00:32:48He taught me.
00:32:50Well, Gesundheit.
00:32:51Gesundheit.
00:32:53Gesundheit is for sneezing.
00:32:55For drinking it is Prost.
00:32:58Oh, you want to smile more, huh?
00:33:00But it sure does things for you.
00:33:03Smile?
00:33:05When?
00:33:07During the bombings, while we fight to stay alive?
00:33:10Or after the bombings, when we try to keep from starving?
00:33:13Is it pretty rough, huh?
00:33:16No, I don't complain.
00:33:18Post.
00:33:20Post.
00:33:22You live here alone?
00:33:23No family?
00:33:24A brother.
00:33:25He's in the army.
00:33:27Until last week I used to get letters.
00:33:29A little money.
00:33:31Now that our village is occupied,
00:33:33who knows whether I shall ever hear from him again.
00:33:35That's why...
00:33:37this.
00:33:39Oh, yeah.
00:33:40With me it used to be the bakery wagon.
00:33:41I don't understand.
00:33:42It's all right.
00:33:43Forget it.
00:33:45It is the first time I ever stole anything.
00:33:48I...
00:33:49I feel ashamed.
00:33:50Oh, sure, sure.
00:33:51I understand.
00:33:52Come here.
00:33:53Come here.
00:33:55Come here.
00:33:57Oh, sure, sure.
00:33:58I understand.
00:34:00Come here.
00:34:02Come here.
00:34:04Come here.
00:34:06Come here.
00:34:07Come here.
00:34:09Come here.
00:34:12I didn't expect you to believe me.
00:34:14Why should you?
00:34:16A person can go only so far.
00:34:18When I met this man I...
00:34:20I went with him because I was desperate.
00:34:23Then when I saw he had so much food.
00:34:27Probably a war profiteer.
00:34:31And I had nothing.
00:34:34I stole.
00:34:37Is it so wrong to take a few marshal when you are hungry?
00:34:41You mean this is all you've done?
00:34:42More than I had yesterday.
00:34:43More than I shall have tomorrow.
00:34:44Oh!
00:34:45I'll tell you.
00:34:47You just keep your chimney open, baby.
00:34:48Because Santa Claus will be coming down in about one little hour.
00:34:52Don't forget.
00:34:53Why not?
00:34:54Don't forget.
00:34:55Why not?
00:34:56Why not?
00:34:57Why not?
00:34:58Why not?
00:34:59Why not?
00:35:00I'll tell you, you just keep your chimney open, baby,
00:35:04because Santa Claus will be coming down in about one little hour.
00:35:10Don't forget, one hour.
00:35:11Hey, hey, Steve, you know, if you kept messing around with those Frauleins,
00:35:31if they catch you, you've got to get 30 days in front of a firing squad.
00:35:34This one's worth it.
00:35:35You know, it might be an improvement over some of the companions they give you here.
00:35:52We have prepared for this moment for a long time.
00:35:56We have taken an oath that not one of you will live to return to his homeland.
00:36:00Do not be misled.
00:36:01You know, it's guys like that that make Dodger fans become giant fans.
00:36:07How about that corny name?
00:36:09Werewolves.
00:36:10I suppose it'd be from some old superstition about fellas what could change themselves into wolves.
00:36:16Ain't no superstition, Josie.
00:36:18Happens to a lot of guys, especially when they get a pass.
00:36:23If you're talking about me, Brooklyn, you've got the right idea.
00:36:29You've got to dangle a bait if you want to catch the fish.
00:36:31Hey, what'd you do, rob a PX?
00:36:34This didn't come out of any PX, look at that.
00:36:37Picked it up in France.
00:36:39Made a deal with, uh, well, you know, casual friends.
00:36:43You won't get two blocks loaded down.
00:36:45I get the town is crawling with MPs.
00:36:47Yeah, there's a hot flash at the top grass of setting up housekeeping to here.
00:36:51Maybe Ike himself.
00:36:54Well, we got a deal.
00:36:57He don't bother me.
00:36:58I don't bother him.
00:36:59Don't wait up for me.
00:37:05Now, look, Steve, if you ask me, you're just looking for trouble.
00:37:09Well, I didn't ask you.
00:37:11So stay up my back.
00:37:17You know, that guy make a wonderful stranger.
00:37:20I don't know why you put up with him.
00:37:21Because he's my buddy, that's why.
00:37:24I don't know why.
00:37:25I don't know.
00:37:26I don't know.
00:37:27See you next door.
00:37:29I don't know why you're here.
00:37:32Maybe...
00:37:32Uh...
00:37:37Let's go.
00:38:07So much food.
00:38:29It has been a long time.
00:38:31You're better, huh?
00:38:32Like a glass.
00:38:37Oh, real coffee.
00:38:47When I was a little girl, Steve,
00:38:49I often dreamed that night that I was a beautiful princess.
00:38:55I remember how I felt, even in my sleep.
00:39:00Unreal.
00:39:01Apart.
00:39:02That the rest of the world no longer existed.
00:39:09I feel like that now.
00:39:14Well, that's good.
00:39:16Because with me around, baby, all your troubles are over.
00:39:19Well, what's the matter?
00:39:26Don't you like the idea?
00:39:29A little more cognac.
00:39:32Oh, sure.
00:39:33Here, you just drink up.
00:39:35We've got a large evening ahead.
00:39:38And my pass is good until midnight.
00:39:41Hey, hey, hey, hey.
00:39:44Well, you drank that like you were ahead
00:39:46for the electric chair.
00:40:47I suppose that in America, you have a saying like we have in Germany.
00:41:00After one dances, one must pay for the music.
00:41:03Oh, no, you've got me all wrong, baby.
00:41:09I don't expect payment for anything.
00:41:14It's just that I like you.
00:41:17I want to do things for you.
00:41:18Look at what else I brought you.
00:41:27The real animals.
00:41:29Hey, look here.
00:41:32This is from Paris.
00:41:34You know Paris, Franz?
00:41:36I've been saving it for someone special.
00:41:37Am I supposed to be somebody special?
00:41:42Oh, sure, you're someone real special.
00:41:53All right.
00:41:54What are you trying to prove?
00:42:03You didn't believe I never stole before.
00:42:07How can I expect you to believe?
00:42:11I never even kissed a man.
00:42:13I suppose you went to that guy's apartment to read the gas meter.
00:42:18I went.
00:42:19Yes.
00:42:20But I couldn't go through with it.
00:42:25I just couldn't, Steve.
00:42:26I'm not like those other girls on the street.
00:42:32Oh, how do you like that?
00:42:35For once in my life, I'm not out after the almighty dollar.
00:42:40You know, I said to myself, forget business, Steve.
00:42:42Live it up a little.
00:42:43Have a good time.
00:42:45So what happens?
00:42:47Nothing happens.
00:42:49You don't believe me.
00:42:50No, that's the trouble.
00:42:51I do believe you.
00:42:52But you're worse than those other women to me.
00:42:55They don't make any pretenses.
00:42:57They don't need a man on.
00:42:59You're nothing but a cheat.
00:43:04I hate to be cheated.
00:43:07If you feel that way, Steve,
00:43:09I will not cheat you.
00:43:12Don't you do me any favors.
00:43:32I'm getting out of here.
00:43:33I'm getting out of here.
00:43:55Oh, my God.
00:44:25Knock it off.
00:44:55Hey, this ain't no warm-up.
00:45:20It's a real toughy pole.
00:45:22Them crowds ain't got enough left for a counter-attack.
00:45:25They must be trying to cover up something.
00:45:38And, you know, where do you think you're going?
00:45:40Over the fence.
00:45:42Don't tell me I'm asking for trouble, because this time I am.
00:45:52I'm coming.
00:45:55Just a moment.
00:45:56Oh, Steve.
00:46:03I had to come back, Ilsa.
00:46:05Oh, Steve.
00:46:07Steve, I was so quiet.
00:46:09I had to know you were all right.
00:46:11Nothing else seemed to matter.
00:46:20Ilsa.
00:46:21I've got to tell you, when I left here, I was angry and confused.
00:46:31I was running away.
00:46:32I don't know why.
00:46:33And then when it started up outside, I got real scared.
00:46:40I've never been scared before.
00:46:43And I think it's because I never had anybody to worry about before.
00:46:51Oh, Ilsa.
00:46:51Steve, I love you.
00:46:57I love you, too, Steve.
00:47:00I knew it the moment the door closed behind you.
00:47:04And I thought I would never see you again.
00:47:21I don't know why.
00:47:38I don't know.
00:47:43I'm the one and I didn't read the other side.
00:47:44I don't know.
00:47:45I didn't see you again.
00:47:45I don't know.
00:47:46I hate you.
00:47:47You were reported absent from quarters last night.
00:48:13I had a pass.
00:48:15On a little midnight.
00:48:16Well, when the fireworks started up, I couldn't get back.
00:48:19According to this, you reported back to quarters before the attack started.
00:48:22You left later without authorization.
00:48:24I had something important to do with it.
00:48:27Very important.
00:48:28Boland, you've been a misfit and a troublemaker ever since you joined my outfit.
00:48:31You've shown absolutely no regard for military authority.
00:48:34This time, I'm going to throw away the key.
00:48:36It'll be a long time before you see another pass.
00:48:39That's all.
00:48:41Well, what is it?
00:48:45Listen, Captain.
00:48:47I know I've been out of line a few times.
00:48:49But everything's going to be different now.
00:48:51There's somebody that's waiting here for me.
00:48:54It's an old army buddy of mine.
00:48:56I need one more pass so that I can explain.
00:48:59There's nothing in your record that indicates I should give you special treatment.
00:49:04Just one pass, Captain.
00:49:05I've got to have it.
00:49:06I said that was all, Boland.
00:49:08Listen, Captain.
00:49:09Don't you understand?
00:49:10All I'm asking for is one lousy pass.
00:49:12I'll play it according to the books from now on.
00:49:14I'll do anything you say.
00:49:15But I've got to have that pass.
00:49:16Corporal!
00:49:17Take this man to the guard house.
00:49:21Checking South dólares.
00:49:22I've got to have a pattern in my head.
00:49:39Here's the thing, Inspector Pete.
00:49:41He can't keep up all the boundaries.
00:49:42Don't be afraid of saturating.
00:49:45Don't you care.
00:49:46But I won't find him anywhere.
00:49:48Storytaleap 높 is to send other friends.
00:49:50if you only had her address I told you I didn't even notice the name of the
00:49:54street maybe she figured it was one of those things you know or maybe she moved
00:50:00away she didn't move away wait to hear from me I'm telling you
00:50:04gonna find her and explain okay now just take it easy I'll keep looking
00:50:20up
00:50:27up
00:50:32up
00:50:35up
00:50:40up
00:50:43up
00:50:46up
00:50:49I'm sorry, Ilse.
00:50:58I thought you would shut my name.
00:51:00Carl, Carl.
00:51:04A little older, maybe, but just as pretty as ever.
00:51:07So, Ilse has a greeting for her brother, but not her lifelong admirer.
00:51:13Ludwig!
00:51:14Oh, I'm so excited, and I didn't recognize you.
00:51:20When the war started, we left a little school girl.
00:51:23Look at her now.
00:51:26But I don't understand.
00:51:29American uniforms!
00:51:31If you're caught, you'll be shot a spy.
00:51:34These days, there are more important things than spying.
00:51:44You see, Ludwig and I are werewolves.
00:51:54Werewolves?
00:51:58I heard stories. I never believed such an organization existed.
00:52:02Will you sit down, Ilse, please?
00:52:09You know, of course, the war is going against us.
00:52:10That's no secret.
00:52:12It will take a miracle by the Fuhrer to save us.
00:52:15I no longer believe in the Fuhrer's miracle.
00:52:17But you will again.
00:52:21That is why Himmler and Goebbels created the werewolves in the first place.
00:52:25We may be the miracle Germany needs.
00:52:27Now? When the war is practically lost?
00:52:30What can you hope to accomplish?
00:52:32With one bold, imaginative stroke, we shall crush the enemy's morale.
00:52:38And turn defeat into victory.
00:52:44I have cigarettes.
00:52:52American.
00:52:54I thought my sister would be different.
00:52:56It is not the way you think, Carl.
00:53:02There was only one man.
00:53:04He gave me food, cigarettes.
00:53:07He was kind to me.
00:53:10I was very fond of him.
00:53:12I thought he was different.
00:53:14Different.
00:53:16They are all the same.
00:53:19I know, Carl.
00:53:20I didn't know then.
00:53:50I know.
00:54:00Ludwig spoke from turning defeat into victory?
00:54:02I don't understand how.
00:54:04Let me quote from the oath we took when we became werewolves.
00:54:08To stay behind, evade capture, destroy supplies, and terrorize the troops of the United States Army.
00:54:16And to kill the Allied Supreme Commander.
00:54:20General Eisenhower?
00:54:22Can you imagine the confusion?
00:54:24The effect on enemy morale?
00:54:26Even if it were possible, Carl, the war is lost.
00:54:29All you can hope to do is prolong it.
00:54:31No, we will win it.
00:54:33The two of you? You and Ludwig?
00:54:35There are more.
00:54:37More than 30 in our unit alone.
00:54:39The East Forest.
00:54:41We're well armed, with enough food for weeks.
00:54:43Ludwig and I were sent on ahead to look around.
00:54:47We know the town.
00:54:49And we know how to talk like Americans.
00:54:51Right, buddy?
00:54:53Roger.
00:54:55You see, Ilse, the years Ludwig and I spent in America will not be wasted.
00:54:59Now we are American GIs. We have the credentials to prove it.
00:55:03Carl.
00:55:05Ludwig.
00:55:07All you can accomplish is get yourself killed.
00:55:09Our lives are not important.
00:55:11As long as the mission is accomplished.
00:55:13The whole idea is insane.
00:55:15As crazy as everything that comes out of the Führer's head.
00:55:18Stop, Ilse!
00:55:19You dare to talk like that!
00:55:28I'm sorry I had to do that to you.
00:55:29But I tell you, our mission is so important that if I felt you stood in the way of it, I would not hesitate to shoot you.
00:55:59I don't think so.
00:56:00I don't think so.
00:56:01I don't think so.
00:56:02I can't.
00:56:03Scuttlebutt says we'll be shoving out of here in a couple of days.
00:56:06I can't.
00:56:07Scuttlebutt says we'll be shoving out of here in a couple of days.
00:56:11Scuttlebutt says we'll be shoving out of here in a couple of days.
00:56:41Oh, oh.
00:56:43No, no, no.
00:56:44It's you.
00:56:45No.
00:56:46I think so.
00:56:48I can't.
00:56:51I can't.
00:56:52No.
00:56:53I can't.
00:56:54I can't.
00:56:56No.
00:56:58No.
00:57:00No.
00:57:01No.
00:57:03No.
00:57:05No.
00:57:07No.
00:57:09No.
01:00:25You remember this?
01:00:26Father's watch.
01:00:27I carried it all through the war.
01:00:29I want you to keep it.
01:00:31I couldn't.
01:00:32It's your good luck piece.
01:00:35Here's all the money I have.
01:00:37They will send you any back pay that I have coming.
01:00:40Carl, you're saying goodbye.
01:00:43Ludwig and I will not be coming back here.
01:00:45It's much too risky.
01:00:46That isn't the reason.
01:00:47You found the information you came for.
01:00:50We have excellent contacts.
01:00:53Today, maybe tomorrow, we will make our move.
01:00:57You mustn't, Carl.
01:00:58You'll be killed.
01:00:59Ilse, we have been all through this.
01:01:00Let us not make our last goodbye, an angry one.
01:01:03Let us not make our last goodbye.
01:01:08Ludwig, I beg you.
01:01:10At least we shall die like men.
01:01:12In our own uniforms, instead of these.
01:01:18Goodbye, Ilse.
01:01:26Ilse, you will remember me kindly, eh?
01:01:33Wake!
01:01:38Wake!
01:02:03Congratulations.
01:02:09I have known a lot of women.
01:02:12They were sharp, conniving women.
01:02:16But they don't even bat in your leg.
01:02:19Me, Steve Boland.
01:02:22A real smart guy.
01:02:24I bust out of a clink just because of someone like you.
01:02:28With every MP this side of the Rhine river gunning for me.
01:02:30Oh, I just thought of you.
01:02:31Steve, that's why you didn't come back.
01:02:33You were arrested.
01:02:35Oh, I didn't know.
01:02:36Oh, that's just too bad.
01:02:38Maybe if you'd have known, you'd have had a band waiting for me here alongside the reception committee.
01:02:42Steve, I thought you'd run away.
01:02:44Oh, Steve.
01:02:45Get away. Get away from me.
01:02:47You're wasting your time.
01:02:48They took away my nylons and my chocolate bars.
01:02:51Steve, one of those men is my brother.
01:02:53Oh, yes. In an American uniform.
01:02:55A real GI Joe himself.
01:02:57How can I make you believe?
01:03:00Come inside, Steve.
01:03:02There's something I've got to tell you.
01:03:03Something very important.
01:03:05Come on.
01:03:13Just a minute.
01:03:18Your papers.
01:03:20Sure, Sarge.
01:03:21There.
01:03:25What are you fellas doing out so late?
01:03:27Well, our outfit just pulled in, Sarge.
01:03:28We were giving this jerk town to once over.
01:03:31What's up, Sarge?
01:03:32Anything special?
01:03:33No, just routine.
01:03:35Some joker busted out of the prison enclosure.
01:03:37Yeah?
01:03:38Hey, when you catch him, you better keep him after school, huh?
01:03:40Go ahead.
01:03:44Right, buddy?
01:03:45Roger.
01:03:50Ilsa.
01:03:52Look, if I made it back to headquarters without getting shot,
01:03:55I'd be still gambling with five years of my life on a rock pile.
01:03:58I'm gambling too, Steve.
01:04:00With my brother's life.
01:04:01Now, this is what I can't understand. Why?
01:04:02What's the angle?
01:04:04I would do anything to help shorten the war.
01:04:07One day, even one hour.
01:04:08Even if it means selling your brother down a river?
01:04:10Please.
01:04:11This is the only way I can save his life.
01:04:18Oh, no.
01:04:19Nothing doing, Ilsa.
01:04:20If I stick my neck out now, it's a sucker play,
01:04:22and I don't make sucker play.
01:04:27The other night, Steve,
01:04:29when you told me so much about yourself,
01:04:32about your boyhood,
01:04:34I found out why you're so bitter.
01:04:36But you're wrong, Steve. Terribly wrong.
01:04:40Even while I was listening to you,
01:04:42I was so envious, it hurt.
01:04:44Envious because my old man was a drunk
01:04:45and because we went around hungry all the time?
01:04:48Because you had freedom, Steve.
01:04:50Whatever you did with your life,
01:04:52at least you were free to make your own choice.
01:04:55You see, this is a freedom my brother and I have never known.
01:05:06Okay, get your coat.
01:05:08Thank you, Steve.
01:05:12I may not get another chance, but...
01:05:15you know why I'm doing this?
01:05:17I know, Steve.
01:05:19But tell me anyhow.
01:05:22I love you, Ilsa.
01:05:30This is the East Forest.
01:05:31They're hiding somewhere in here.
01:05:33Five miles behind our lines.
01:05:37Has counterintelligence received any reports
01:05:40of German units in this area, Captain?
01:05:42No, Colonel.
01:05:44CIC has screened hundreds of PWs and civilians
01:05:45in the past few days.
01:05:46Not a hint.
01:05:48Nothing in G-2 either.
01:05:50You say about 30 men, Fraulein?
01:05:52In my brother's unit alone.
01:05:54There are other units elsewhere.
01:05:56They have been infiltrating for a long time.
01:05:59That's quite possible, Colonel.
01:06:00Thousands of civilians and soldiers have been pouring into our territory
01:06:03in the past few days,
01:06:05rather than falling into Russian hands.
01:06:08You say your brother told you
01:06:09that the werewolf organization was founded in 1943?
01:06:13Yes, sir.
01:06:14That's when Heinrich Himmler ordered the first training school in Poland.
01:06:17It was later moved to Zuremberg in September of 1944.
01:06:20They have been waiting until now to start operations.
01:06:25Fantastic, these Nazis.
01:06:28Preparing to lose the war back in 1943.
01:06:31Before D-Day, when they were winning it.
01:06:34These operations, Fraulein, do you know what they are?
01:06:37Assassinations of high officers.
01:06:40Blowing up ammunition guns and gasoline depots.
01:06:42The main mission is an assassination.
01:06:46Who?
01:06:47General Eisenhower.
01:06:52Thank you, Fraulein, for your cooperation.
01:06:58Captain.
01:07:00You don't think...
01:07:02I mean, you know why I told you all this.
01:07:05I'm not being a traitor to my people.
01:07:07No, Fraulein. Private Boland explained.
01:07:09We're very grateful.
01:07:11You may wait outside with him.
01:07:22Colonel, what do you think?
01:07:24I don't know.
01:07:26I always thought the only function of the werewolves
01:07:28was a lot of psychological jabbering on the radio.
01:07:30There may be something in what she says.
01:07:32Remember the Scorzini jeep parties during the bulge?
01:07:35They didn't get very far.
01:07:36No, but Scorzi's idea was dangerous nonetheless.
01:07:40Filling captured jeeps with English-speaking Germans
01:07:42in American uniforms.
01:07:44Then infiltrating behind the Allied lines
01:07:46with the mission of killing General Eisenhower.
01:07:48It was crazy.
01:07:50Sure. And it might have succeeded.
01:07:52The Krauts knew every one of our passwords.
01:07:54Fortunately, they didn't know who Dick Tracy and Pruneface were.
01:07:57It's your show, Captain.
01:07:59I'll see you get all the tactical help you need.
01:08:01Thank you, sir.
01:08:06Thank you, sir.
01:08:36Thank you, sir.
01:08:37Thank you, sir.
01:08:42Take a break.
01:08:43All right.
01:08:44Break over here.
01:08:50Well, we checked every clump of underbrush.
01:08:53Every thicket.
01:08:55You asked me, they made up the entire story.
01:08:56Boland and his Fraulein.
01:08:58Why would they want to do that?
01:09:00Boland's in real trouble this time.
01:09:02Probably figures he can hold off the charges against him
01:09:05by some fantastic claims.
01:09:09You may as well dismiss your men, Captain.
01:09:13We've been ordered to move up. We're behind schedule now.
01:09:15But as for Boland, I'm ordering him help for a general court-martial.
01:09:19All right, let's go.
01:09:26Let's go.
01:09:32It must be visitor's day.
01:09:37Boland, I've come to ask you a favor.
01:09:40You tell me what's going to happen to Ilsa.
01:09:42We've no reason to hold her. She's waiting for you now, outside.
01:09:45What do you mean she's waiting for me?
01:09:48Boland, an officer courier and his driver were found stabbed to death.
01:09:51They were carrying a coded message that General Eisenhower will be passing through here this afternoon.
01:09:57Oh.
01:09:59Well, there you are.
01:10:01Maybe some of you big brains are convinced that Ilsa was on the level about werewolves.
01:10:06Your girlfriend knows this district. She's lived here all her life.
01:10:09I've asked her to take me through that forest.
01:10:11It's real cozy.
01:10:13Don't forget the mustard and pickles.
01:10:16She insists she won't go unless you come along.
01:10:18You see? She's not only beautiful, but she's got brains.
01:10:23I've got to search that forest again, Boland.
01:10:26And I haven't got time to go through channels.
01:10:29I know I'm sticking my chin out.
01:10:31But I'm taking you along without authority.
01:10:34You're springing me?
01:10:35Just for a few hours.
01:10:37A few hours.
01:10:42Okay, so as long as I get to see Ilsa, I'll be your traveling companion.
01:10:46I'll be your traveling companion.
01:10:47I'll be your traveling companion.
01:10:48Let's go.
01:11:11We're going to cross this area.
01:11:13Horizontally, vertically and diagonally.
01:11:15Let's go in circles.
01:11:17Captain, there's a cave up there.
01:11:19Carl and I used to play there when we were children.
01:11:21But it's very small, hardly large enough to hide one man.
01:11:25Well, I'm not passing up anything. Let's have a look.
01:11:47Let's go.
01:11:49Let's go.
01:11:51Let's go.
01:11:53Let's go.
01:11:55Let's go.
01:11:57Let's go.
01:11:59Let's go.
01:12:01I couldn't hide two midgets out there.
01:12:20Don't move! Freeze!
01:12:21Come!
01:12:22One scream, Ilse, they're dead men.
01:12:24You, drop your gun. Easy.
01:12:26You mustn't do this.
01:12:27Quiet!
01:12:28My sister betraying the fatherland.
01:12:30Carl, you don't understand.
01:12:32We have been watching you since you got here,
01:12:34just as we watched those bungling soldiers.
01:12:36You were watching us? That's not possible.
01:12:39There's no harm in you knowing. You follow me?
01:12:52Millwebbel, Gebhard!
01:12:58Underground.
01:13:00The entire installation underground.
01:13:01Precisely, Captain.
01:13:03One gunshot.
01:13:04I can have 30 men at my side in a matter of seconds.
01:13:07That signal will not be given for exactly 12 minutes
01:13:10when your General Eisenhower comes through.
01:13:12Take charge of the girl.
01:13:14Carl, I beg you!
01:13:16I beg you!
01:13:17Quiet.
01:13:18Not a sound.
01:13:29The advance guard.
01:13:30In a moment, your tough press.
01:13:32Then the supreme commander.
01:13:34By that time...
01:13:36No, Gebhard!
01:13:38No, Gebhard!
01:13:40Fool! That's what she wants!
01:13:42Oh!
01:13:42Oh!
01:13:44Let's go.
01:14:14Let's go.
01:14:44Let's go.
01:15:14Let's go.
01:15:44Let's go.
