00:00Lisbon was struck by tragedy on Wednesday when one of the capital city's historic funiculars

00:05derailed, killing at least 16 people and injuring dozens.

00:10At around 6pm, the funicular, travelling round Calcada da Gloria towards Restoradores Square,

00:15in the heart of the Portuguese capital, lost control and crashed violently into a building.

00:21The accident also injured dozens, five of whom were taken to Lisbon's main hospitals

00:26to receive treatment for critical injuries.

00:29Four Portuguese nationals, two Germans and one Korean citizen are among the fatalities.

00:35A German family of three was also on board with the father dying at the scene.

00:41The accident was most likely caused by a broken cable.

00:45This is certainly the most tragic accident than the memory of the transports in Lisbon.
