00:00Both sides, raring to go for this first of three one-day internationals from Headingley.
00:14So very, very good afternoon to you in the sunshine here.
00:18Harry Brook of England, who has got the coin.
00:20Harry, give it a flip, please.
00:22Tails is the call, and it has come down a tail.
00:27South Africa won the toss.
00:28Timber, what are you going to do?
00:29We're going to have a ball first.
00:30Both teams were named last night, so unchanged.
00:34England go with Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith, Joe Root, Brook Butler, Bethel in the middle order.
00:40Will Jacks, the finisher at number seven in the bowlers cast, Archer Rashid.
00:44And the debutant, the extremely exciting, Sonny Baker.
00:47Sean Pollock is alongside me.
00:49Talk us through South Africa.
00:50Yeah, Aidan Mark and Ryan Rickleton at the top.
00:52Good left-handed, right-handed combination.
00:54Timber Bavuma slots in again after his injury at number three.
00:57Tony De Sorsi, doesn't normally bat in that position, normally at the top of the order,
01:01but having to fill the spot of Bretzky.
01:04And you've got Deval Brevis, who's going to be pretty exciting in that middle order.
01:08Bowling-wise, well, we're going to see those two.
01:10It was usually in Giddy and Nandre Berger.
01:13And Berger is going to be the one who's going to start.
01:15Yeah, just a seventh one-day international start for Nandre Berger.
01:21Africa, perhaps a little bit underpowered in terms of experience in their bowling attack.
01:27Perhaps another reason why they chose to bowl first on what looks like a good pitch.
01:32Jamie Smith has been extraordinary since coming into the England side.
01:48Wonderful.
01:49Glorious way to open Jamie Smith's account.
01:52Straight again.
01:59Smith learning from the second or third delivery where he tried to turn the face on the ball a little.
02:09Not quite out of the middle of the bat, but it doesn't have to be here at Henningley.
02:14Inside half from Duckett.
02:16The bat turned a little in his hand, but it fairly raced away to mid on for four.
02:20Got him.
02:25Beautiful delivery.
02:26That is exactly as Sean Pollock prescribed.
02:30Yeah, when you bowl first, you want to try and get some movement off the surface or through the air,
02:35and that length is perfect.
02:36Held a fuller length.
02:37They've been trying to harbor in on that length.
02:39The movement is what does for Duckett.
02:42Not a massive stride.
02:43Finds the outside edge.
02:44There's the start.
02:45South Africa after.
02:46Duckett goes for five.
02:4713 for one.
02:48But a man who is no stranger to this arena, nor to playing for England.
02:54In 181 matches.
02:58Oh, my goodness.
03:00Not we mentioned that he might be in some decent form.
03:03There's your evidence.
03:05No need to try and find your feet.
03:07Having played as much cricket on this ground and leaning the touches in.
03:10He's just looking at the ball, waiting for it to be in the right area, and then executing like he does on this occasion.
03:16Wonderful shot.
03:20Misdirected.
03:22Doesn't quite cover it.
03:23Oh, gorgeous again.
03:27All took takes a little bubble over one of the used wicked ends, but that won't stop it.
03:32Not far away from back to point, but far enough away from Enghidi at third man.
03:49Back-to-back boundaries.
03:51After a bit of pressure have been built.
03:53Oh, now, has that been taken?
04:00There's a definite edge from Root who'll stand, I think.
04:02Rickleton got that one hand to it.
04:05Very tough low catch to his right.
04:08The ball bounced up, and it's just a question of whether Rickleton got that glove underneath the ball for the second time.
04:15Keep rolling.
04:23Happiest to me that the catch is taken clean.
04:25Just roll it once again.
04:27Roll it.
04:29Yeah, just roll it once again.
04:32Yes, please.
04:38Satisfied.
04:39My decision for the big sprint is...
04:41Well, I'm fairly certain that last replay was the killer as far as Joe Root is concerned,
04:48because it showed that Rickleton got the ball in his glove.
04:52It's a quite brilliant catch in the end.
04:55Ground to which he averages 84.
04:58Goes for 14.
04:59England 44 for two.
05:01So it brings Harry Brook, the captain, to the crease.
05:05Welcome to Headingley, Harry Brook.
05:20I think that he should have done better there, Ngeidi.
05:30Work to leg.
05:32And the outfield super pass.
05:35First here at Headingley.
05:53Creamed on the up by Jamie Smith.
05:57He moves to 30.
05:58England 66 for two.
06:0034 to Smith.
06:01Yeah, just got enough to get it over mid-on.
06:09It wasn't particularly sweetly hit, this, by Jamie Smith.
06:16Helps it away fine.
06:17Bit of confusion, and Brook in trouble.
06:29Now a full-length dive, and he'll hope he's home.
06:33But we're going to go upstairs.
06:35And there was...
06:36...confusion here between Brook, who wanted the second, and Smith, who didn't.
06:42And the key person, can I have the side of the plate?
06:49Yeah, satisfied.
06:50The batter is a little short of his pound.
06:51The wicket is broken.
06:53Satisfied where the switch for the big screen is.
06:55Big moment, this, as England's captain, Harry Brook, goes run out in a misunderstanding with Jamie Smith.
07:06Tristan Stubbs, the fielder, out at deep cover.
07:08He's gone for 12.
07:10England lose their third on the point of drinks.
07:1282 for three.
07:13This will be an interesting battle between Keshef Maharaj and Butler.
07:21Straight he goes.
07:23The crowd absolutely love that.
07:28Oh!
07:32It's been an excellent innings from Smith.
07:35His second half-century in ODIs.
07:38He's watched wickets fall at the other end.
07:40Oh, he passes a nice milestone.
07:48The cry is catch.
07:50And that's answered.
07:52Corbin Bosch has done a great job there.
07:55He always seemed to be going away from him.
07:59He's done a really good job to grab that.
08:01Yeah, outstanding catch.
08:03Good innings from Jamie Smith, though.
08:0654 from 48.
08:08Four down now.
08:09102 for four.
08:13That is really well done by Markram.
08:19Because he would have taken the deflection of the bat of the keeper.
08:22And he stayed calm.
08:26He's an excellent slip fielder.
08:28And Maharaj in amongst the wickets again.
08:30Young Jacob Bethel has gone cheaply for one.
08:331.07 for five.
08:39That has flown to the boundary.
08:42That's it.
08:46Yes, Keshav.
08:47Back to words.
08:49Keshav Maharaj.
08:50Just a little chip.
08:51And made it look so easy off his own bowling.
08:54It wasn't easy.
08:55Because of the non-striking batter that was, for a time, in his way.
08:59And Jax goes for seven at a runner ball.
09:05117 for six now.
09:09Oh, that's out as well.
09:10Inside edge.
09:12All over the place.
09:14Batting from Joss Butler.
09:16Feet nowhere.
09:18Hands nowhere near the line of the ball.
09:22And Mulder has another.
09:23He's a man who can bet with the tail and the bowlers.
09:26But now he's gone for 15.
09:28119 for seven.
09:29Gone.
09:32Gone.
09:33It's a superb catch.
09:36It's an equally good delivery.
09:39Aidan Markram, who has wonderful hands,
09:45has dived to his left,
09:47caught the ball inches from the ground.
09:49And this is a rout.
09:52Archer wanders off in much the same fashion.
09:55Only four South Africans have taken
09:58ODI hat-tricks.
10:04Another fine delivery and
10:06a huge cheer.
10:11That's great.
10:12He's hit that well.
10:14He's hit that very well.
10:15One bounce, four.
10:16Aidan Markram, who has done it for a moment or so, but that looked pretty straight.
10:29Four reds.
10:30Four reds.
10:31Four reds.
10:32Four reds.
10:33Rashid goes for nine.
10:34131 for nine.
10:35And he lasts for just the one delivery.
10:40Maharaj, bang on target again.
10:41Sonny Baker has made his bow and will bow once again on the way off because he's gone for a first ball duck.
10:52That has been an extraordinary collapse from England conditions not to blame South Africa winning the toss and deciding to bowl first feeling that yes, there may be runs to chase in the second half, but they would back themselves to do it little did they imagine that they would back themselves to do it.
11:07Little did they imagine that they'd only be chasing 131.
11:26Jamie Smith aside, it has been an insipid performance from England.
11:30Nobody able to cope with a small amount of movement and adjustment in terms of length from South Africa, who looked for swing to start with, but then dragged their length back to a more defensive line and length, I should say.
11:46And England just simply unable to cope with it.
11:49Yeah, bowling-wise, Berger and Giddy, they found their links eventually at the back end of the power play and were effective, picked up a wicket themselves.
11:56Bosch didn't have his best of out in just the three overs for him, but then it was the Mulder and Baraj show seven wickets between them.
12:03And as I said, they ripped out the heart of the England batting and they've gone on to close the deal as well, wrapping it up with just 131 on the board.
12:11And what has unfolded here this afternoon at Headingley has been absolutely full of drama.
12:23Well, debutant Sonny Baker, brand new ball and first over Baker to Markram, two slips, short leg.
12:33Heading, waiting.
12:34Flicked away.
12:35It was bat.
12:36Punched.
12:37Up and over Joffre Archer, powerfully from Markram.
12:52Expansive drive from Markram.
12:58Edge has a carriage, Root thinks so, as does Archer.
13:07Out of the head from Jo Root, umpires will come together.
13:15to show you what you have done?
13:19And.
13:20Your target you don't have any other angle.
13:22Right?
13:23So, just gagner the ball.
13:24And you don't have the zoom a Lei as well?
13:28Rolling slowly from there?
13:29Yeah, just freeze in there.
13:31As I can see the ball.
13:33Just what I want one frame back and freeze in there.
13:35I can see that the ball makes contact with the ground before it gets into the hand.
13:40Satisfied my decision for the big split is.
13:44well it's taken some time third of the fire psych at us to the right decision
13:52we think yeah too straight and then too wide on this occasion from Baker well
14:05Ariel on this occasion and all the way for six from Markham and his meat and
14:12drink with a very classy Aidan Markham only comes harder yet again this time
14:22leg side from Markham picks up a maximum he has not missed the middle of his back
14:28yet 87 miles an hour but Markham is coming after him there'll be awareness
14:35that he's on debut and he's gonna go after him and try and knock him out of
14:39the attack and he's taken him for 34 in 11 balls
14:47well everything seems to find the middle of Aidan Markham well full and on the angle
14:58Rickleton gets off the mark
15:05eased through the leg side and such is the nature of the outfield at Headingley
15:12crunched from Aidan Markham
15:18yet again on the up from Aidan Markham this is a clinic
15:24well yet again through the offside he's happy to get on top of the bounds and drive it on the up
15:36through the covers 50 off just 23 balls he has put this game to bed if it had not already been put to
15:42bed by England's appalling batting and South Africa's bowling
15:46strength of Ryan Rickleton he picks up length
15:54straight up in the air
15:57that it'll go fine and a couple of bounces into the fence but that rushed
16:02Ryan Rickleton
16:04another slow ball
16:09further evidence of Markham's power
16:14beautiful bit of bowling actually it's going to go for four but it's
16:23well it's a lovely piece of bowling from Adil Rashid to take the edge
16:28pulled firmly again
16:41brilliantly taken
16:47finds the gap this time Brooke will give chase he may haul it in
16:57and does do
16:58showing excellent commitments at the end of a difficult day
17:03can't prevent the third
17:06and belatedly
17:24the western terrace rises
17:26they've not had anything to shout about today but
17:31can Rashid emulate that
17:34I was just about to say he's one of those guys who will take it on
17:40he won't look to pet it back and I think he was thinking out the ground at one stage
17:44he was
17:45a handsome way to finish the most comprehensive victory for South Africa
17:56they've looked like a team playing serious cricket
18:01England have got some serious thinking to do
18:04caught cold here at Headingley
18:06and hammered by seven wickets and beat with the best part of 30 overs to spare
18:12England then 131 all out in 24.3 overs
18:17well beaten by South Africa who got to the winning target
18:20in under 21 overs of their reply
18:23they win by seven wickets
18:35you
