00:00So, here it is, the 2025 Porsche Mekong EV, and it arrives with a massive question, one that could shape the next decade of performance cars.
00:10Can electric SUV that weighs over two and a half tons actually feel like a Porsche?
00:15The team from Stuttgart, a brand built on flat-six engines and telepathic handling, is making a bold promise.
00:22They aren't just saying this is a good electric SUV.
00:26They're calling it the new king of the premium electric segment.
00:29But let's be real, the world is full of fast EVs.
00:33Competitors from Tesla and BMW are already here, offering neck-snapping acceleration and impressive tech.
00:41Is a Mekong EV just a clever marketing exercise, a shared platform with a fancy badge on the hood?
00:47Or has Porsche genuinely managed to inject its legendary driving DNA into this new electric world?
00:54Today, we find out.
00:56We're not just reading spec sheets.
00:57We're going to push this 630-horsepower turbo model to its limit.
01:03We'll explore its groundbreaking 800-volt architecture that promises to make range anxiety a thing of the past.
01:11And most importantly, we'll see how it stacks up against its toughest rivals to answer that one question.
01:17Is the 2025 Porsche Mekong EV all hype, or is it truly the new king?
01:22To really get the Mekong EV, you just have to look at it.
01:25Porsche design isn't just about making a car look good.
01:28It's about function creating the form.
01:31And you can see that philosophy everywhere here.
01:34At first glance, it's still a Mekong.
01:36It has that same tight, muscular stance and aggressive posture that made the original gas model the brand's bestseller.
01:43But the longer you look, the more you see the changes driven by its electric heart.
01:48Let's start up front.
01:49The most obvious new feature is the split headlight design, borrowed from its big brother, the Taycan.
01:55Up top, you have these slim, four-point daytime running lights that give the Mekong a sharp, futuristic look.
02:02The main headlights are actually tucked away lower in the bumper, almost hidden.
02:07This isn't just for style.
02:09It helps create a lower, more aerodynamic hood.
02:12And aerodynamics is the secret story of this car's design.
02:16The entire front end is incredibly clever about managing airflow.
02:21There are active air flaps in the lower intake that close on the highway to reduce drag, but open when the batteries need cooling.
02:28Air is channeled through functional curtains at the corners, smoothing out the flow around the wheels, which is a huge source of turbulence.
02:36All of this adds up to an impressively low drag coefficient for an SUV, which is critical for squeezing every last mile out of the battery.
02:45Move to the side, and you see that classic Porsche fly line, the sloping coupe-like roof that flows cleanly to the back.
02:53It's even more dramatic here than on the gas Mekong, giving it a much sportier profile.
02:58The doors are now frameless, a premium touch you usually see on high-end coupes that adds to the sleek look.
03:06And below them, you'll see those signature Mekong side blades, but they've been sculpted to help guide air along the car's body.
03:13And you get to the rear, and it's pure, modern Porsche.
03:16A full-width 3D light bar makes the car look wide and planted, especially at night.
03:22But the real-party piece is the adaptive rear spoiler, a key part of Porsche's active aerodynamic system.
03:29It stays tucked away for a clean look in the city.
03:32At higher speeds, it extends to an eco-position to improve efficiency.
03:37And when you switch into Sport or Sport Plus, it moves to a performance position to create real downforce, pushing the car onto the road for better stability.
03:46It's engineering you can actually watch as it works.
03:49When you put it all together, the low nose, the sculpted sides, the active aero, you realize this isn't just an updated Mekong.
03:58It's a total rethink, designed around the needs of an electric powertrain.
04:03It's leaner, sleeker, and looks more advanced.
04:07It manages to feel both familiar and brand new at the same time, which is one of the hardest things to pull off in car design.
04:13It's not just a Taikong on stilts or an electrified version of the old SUV.
04:18It's the next logical step, and from the outside, it looks ready to lead the pack.
04:24Stepping inside the Mekong EV feels like you're jumping ahead a few years.
04:29It's where Porsche's two personalities, the Focus sports car builder and the modern luxury brand, come together perfectly.
04:36The first thing you notice is the driving position.
04:40For an SUV, you sit low and feel wrapped in the cockpit, not perched on top of it.
04:46It's a deliberate choice, meant to connect you with the car before you even press the start button, which is still on the left of the steering wheel, a classic Porsche touch.
04:55Your eyes immediately go to the beautiful 12.6-inch curved instrument cluster.
05:01It's a freestanding digital screen that looks like it's floating behind the wheel.
05:06The clarity is fantastic, and you can customize it to show a classic three-dial layout, a full-screen map, or a minimal view with just your speed and range.
05:16Everything is controlled from the steering wheel, which, in our turbo model, has that iconic drive mode selector.
05:23Being able to twist a dial to switch from normal to sport to sport plus is a simple, satisfying action that never gets old.
05:30It keeps your hands on the wheel and your mind on the road.
05:33To your right is the main 10.9-inch center touchscreen, your hub for navigation, media, and car settings.
05:41It runs on an Android automotive OS, so it's quick, responsive, and has apps like Spotify and Apple Music built right in.
05:48Naturally, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.
05:52The layout is clean, and while there's a ton of functionality, Porsche was smart enough to keep physical toggle switches for the main climate controls.
06:02And honestly, this is a huge plus.
06:05In a world where car makers are burying basic functions and menus, being able to adjust the temperature with a quick click is a big win for safety and convenience.
06:14It's the perfect mix of high-tech screens and old-school common sense.
06:19But then there's the feature that's bound to start a conversation.
06:23The optional 10.9-inch passenger display.
06:26This is a separate screen just for your front seat passenger, letting them control music, look up destinations, or even stream video while you're driving.
06:35You might be thinking, isn't that distracting?
06:37Porsche already thought of that.
06:39A special filter makes the screen totally invisible from the driver's seat.
06:44Is it a gimmick?
06:45Maybe for some.
06:46But on a long road trip, it could be a game-changer, turning your passenger into a real co-pilot and DJ.
06:53We'd love to hear what you think in the comments.
06:55Is a passenger screen something you'd actually use?
06:58The tech doesn't stop there.
07:00The Mekong EV also offers an advanced augmented reality head-up display.
07:05This isn't just your typical HUD showing your speed.
07:07It projects animated arrows that seem to float over the exact street you need to turn onto, which makes navigating tricky intersections incredibly easy.
07:17And Porsche even engineered it to work perfectly with polarized sunglasses, a small detail that a lot of other carmakers miss.
07:26Beyond the screens, the material quality is just exceptional.
07:30Everything you touch feels solid and expensive.
07:32The leather is soft, the metal trim is cool to the touch, and you can get sustainable options like Racetech's microfiber, a high-quality, non-animal material that feels great.
07:44The ambient lighting is another highlight.
07:47It not only sets the mood, but also serves a purpose.
07:50Pulsing to show the vehicle is charging or flashing to warn you about a potential hazard in your blind spot.
07:56All told, the interior of the Mekong EV is a massive success.
08:01It feels incredibly modern without being cold or confusing.
08:05It's filled with cutting-edge tech that's actually useful, not just for show.
08:10And most importantly, it never forgets about the driver.
08:14It's a space that's comfortable enough for a long journey, but focused enough for a fun drive.
08:19It's a cabin that absolutely feels worth the price and sets a new standard for what an electric SUV interior should be.
08:26A Porsche has to be a brilliant car to drive.
08:29That's a given.
08:30But an SUV, even one from Porsche, has to do more.
08:34It has to handle daily life, weekend trips, grocery runs, and hauling the occasional big thing from Ikea.
08:42So, the question is, did Porsche sacrifice practicality for performance and style?
08:48Well, let's start with the back seats.
08:50This was a weak spot for the old gas Mekong, but the new electro platform brings some nice improvements.
08:56The wheelbase is longer, which directly translates to more legroom for rear passengers.
09:02Getting in is easy, and once you're there, the space is surprisingly good.
09:07An average-sized adult will have plenty of knee room, and despite that sloping roofline, headroom is fine too.
09:13It's a noticeable improvement that makes the back seats genuinely comfortable for adults on longer trips.
09:20The rear cabin also feels premium, with its own climate controls and available heated seats.
09:27Now, what about cargo space?
09:29Behind the rear seats, you get about 18 to 19 cubic feet of space.
09:34That's plenty for a week's worth of groceries, a couple of suitcases, or your golf clubs.
09:38It's a well-shaped area with a flat floor.
09:42If you need more room, the rear seats fold down in a useful 40-20-40 split, opening up the cargo hold to nearly 50 cubic feet.
09:52This makes the Mekong surprisingly versatile for hauling larger items.
09:57But one of the best parts of an EV platform is the front trunk, or frunk, and the Mekong EV delivers.
10:04Pop the hood, and you'll find a neat, lined compartment with about 3 cubic feet of space.
10:10It's not massive, but it's the perfect place to store your charging cables, keeping them separate from your luggage.
10:16It's also great for a backpack or a bag of take-out food.
10:20You don't want smelling up the cabin.
10:22Beyond the big spaces, Porsche got the little things right too.
10:25The door pockets are a decent size, there are plenty of cup holders, and you get a good storage band under the center armrest.
10:31But maybe one of the smartest practical features is having charging ports on both sides of the car.
10:38Both can handle AC charging, while the driver's side also takes high-speed DC fast charging.
10:44This might sound like a small thing, but if you've ever had to stretch a charging cable across your car in a parking garage,
10:50you know this is a game-changer for convenience.
10:53So, has practicality been sacrificed?
10:56The answer is a clear no.
10:57While it might not have the massive cargo numbers of a Tesla Model Y, the Mekong EV is more than practical enough for most people.
11:05It offers more rear passenger room than its predecessor, a flexible cargo area, and smart features that make it easy to live with.
11:14Porsche walked that tightrope perfectly, creating a vehicle that's both a thrilling machine and a capable daily driver.
11:21Alright, we've seen how it looks and how it feels on the inside.
11:25Alright, we've established that it's a beautifully designed, high-tech, and genuinely practical machine.
11:31But none of that matters if it doesn't deliver on the most important promise of that badge on the hood.
11:36The big question remains, does it drive like a Porsche?
11:39Before we hit the road and unleash all 630 horsepower,
11:44if you're finding this review valuable,
11:46do us a favor and hit that subscribe button and ring the bell so you don't miss our future videos.
11:51So, we've seen that the Mekong EV is an incredible piece of engineering.
11:56It's beautifully built, insanely fast, handles like a sports car, and has game-changing charging tech.
12:02But all of this comes at a price.
12:05And this is where the conversation gets real.
12:07Is it worth it?
12:08The lineup starts with the base Mekong at around $77,000.
12:12The dual-motor Mekong 4, which will probably be the sweet spot for many,
12:17starts at about $79,000.
12:20From there, it climbs to about $85,000 for the Mekong 4S.
12:25And the top-of-the-line turbo model we've been testing starts at a serious $107,000.
12:31And remember, those are just starting prices.
12:34Porsche's options list is famously long and expensive.
12:37It's easy to add tens of thousands of dollars for things like rear axle steering,
12:43the sport chrono package, and upgraded interiors.
12:46Let's put that in context with the competition.
12:48First, you have the sales king, the Tesla Model Y Performance.
12:52It costs significantly less, is just as quick on paper, has more total cargo space,
12:58and gives you access to Tesla's fantastic supercharger network.
13:02But, the Mekong has far better interior build quality, much more sophisticated ride and handling,
13:08and a level of brand prestige Tesla can't touch.
13:11The Tesla feels like a tech product.
13:14The Porsche feels like a meticulously engineered machine.
13:17Next up is the BMW iX.
13:20If you're looking for comfort and a futuristic, lounge-like interior, the iX is a great choice.
13:27It's more of a luxury cruiser.
13:28The Mekong, on the other hand, is a driver's car through and through.
13:33The BMW iX M60 is a close performance rival.
13:37But the Mekong Turbo is faster, more agile, and more engaging to drive.
13:43The Mekong also has a huge advantage in charging speed with its 800-volt system.
13:48Finally, there's the Mekong's own cousin, the Audi Q6 e-tron, built on the same platform.
13:54While the Audi is sure to be a fantastic vehicle, Porsche always finds a way to inject its own perfor.
