00:00In an interview with Euronews Romania, European People's Party President Manfred Weber said the GPS jamming of Ursula von der Leyen's plane showed that Europe needs to come together to step up its defenses.
00:13The European level, the European Commission, Council and so on, is obviously a point of target for the Russian attacks.
00:22And that's why we have to strengthen also protecting our institutions on the European level.
00:25Again, we want to have a peaceful and treaty-based and consent-based cooperation with all our partners.
00:35But if someone like Putin is becoming aggressive, is becoming brutal, takes our way of life into question, then we have to stand up and defend ourselves.
00:45Weber pointed to the $150 billion loan instrument to boost defense production known as SAFE, which he said enables member states to jointly invest more in defense.
00:55It's not that the responsibility of Romania, Poland and the Baltic countries to build up a European pillar of defense or a missile defense shield, for example.
01:05It's the responsibility for all Europeans, so all Italians, Spaniards, the German citizens also have to invest in our security to protect the east of Europe.
01:16And that's why the east shield, to build up a strong defense on the east side of the European continent, is a joint European responsibility.
01:25Weber's comments come as von der Leyen tours EU member states that border Russia and Belarus to express solidarity and promote Europe's increased defense spending plans.
