00:58However, this incident was far from being an open-and-shut case.

04:23Leaving behind his siblings in Ethiopia,
04:27Wandimu embraced the opportunities that awaited him in America.
04:31He secured employment at the Dash and convenience store located within the Shell gas station
04:36at 11150 New Hampshire Avenue in Silver Spring, Maryland.
04:39A deeply religious man,
04:42Wandimu devoted much of his time to the Tewaldo Church of the Ethiopian Orthodox.
04:47According to Kesis Nemaia Getu, the priest of the church,
04:51Wandimu was characterized by his kind-hearted nature and unwavering spirituality.
04:56His faith played a vital role in shaping his character and guiding his actions.
05:01Wandimu was 61 years old on December 8, 2022,
05:05and he was planning to quit his job at the convenience store to welcome a new phase in life
05:09where he planned on spending more time with his lovely wife and devote his time to the church.
05:14That fateful day was meant to be his final day at work.
05:18However, what should have been a day of excitement for the future
05:22turned into an unimaginable nightmare for Wandimu as well as his entire family.
05:27On December 8, 2022, Wandimu found himself engrossed in his usual routine at the Dash and convenience store.
05:36The day appeared to be like any other, unremarkable and mundane,
05:40until the arrival of a man at precisely 2.58pm.
05:45This customer, appearing to be in his early 30s,
05:48picked up a bottle of iced tea from the shelves and walked towards the counter.
05:51Unfortunately for Wandimu, this seemingly typical encounter would take a sinister turn.
06:02Approaching the cash register, the customer's demeanor shifted
06:05as he initiated an argument with Wandimu over the bottle of iced tea.
06:09What started as a minor disagreement rapidly escalated into a full-blown confrontation.
06:15The atmosphere grew tense, and the customer, in a fit of rage,
06:18began grabbing items from the counter, hurling them towards Wandimu.
06:23Desperate to defend himself, he reached behind the counter and seized a metal pole
06:27and swung it in the man's direction.
06:30In an attempt to create distance, the customer instinctively took a step back,
06:34his intention seemingly to protect himself from Wandimu's swing.
06:38However, what happened next would seal Wandimu's tragic fate.
06:43In a shocking twist, the customer swiftly reached into his front vest pocket,
06:47revealing a loaded handgun.
06:49He aimed the silver weapon at Wandimu, firing a single shot at point-blank range.
06:56The bullet struck Wandimu's chest, causing him to collapse.
07:01But for the deranged assailant, this act of violence was not enough.
07:05He senselessly ascended the counter,
07:08closing the distance between himself and Wandimu's wounded body.
07:11Unleashing a barrage of gunfire, he fired multiple shots, ensuring that Wandimu was dead.
07:22He then got down from the counter, picked up his iced tea, and rushed out of the store,
07:27leaving behind Wandimu's blood-soaked body on the ground.
07:30At 3.03pm on December 8, 2022, the police received an urgent call reporting the incident at the convenience store.
07:39Responding swiftly, they raced to the scene and discovered a Yalu Wandimu behind the counter,
07:45bearing multiple gunshot wounds to the chest.
07:47Their immediate priority was to assess his condition and administer life-saving measures.
07:52Tragically, it was already too late.
07:56A Yalu Wandimu had succumbed to his injuries.
07:59The authorities wasted no time launching a thorough investigation into the heinous crime.
08:05With the store's CCTV footage as the crucial piece of evidence,
08:09investigators thoroughly analyzed the video to piece together the sequence of events.
08:13Armed with this newfound understanding, they embarked on the search for the perpetrator.
08:18Gathering all available information, including witness testimonies,
08:22investigators were able to identify the suspect as 31-year-old Tori Damien Moore.
08:27With the evidence in hand, an arrest warrant was swiftly issued on December 9, 2022,
08:33charging Moore with first-degree murder and the use of a firearm during a violent crime.
08:37The surveillance footage also provided crucial information about Moore's escape route
08:41after fleeing the convenience store.
08:44As investigators dug deeper, they discovered that Moore was a residence of Silver Spring
08:49and lived in the Enclave Apartments, conveniently situated across the street from the Dasha
08:54and Convenience Store where Wandimu was killed.
08:57Acting on the obtained information, the SWAT team proceeded to execute a no-knock search warrant
09:02at Moore's apartment.
09:04With a no-knock search warrant, police do not need to knock before entering a home or place a business
09:09and are free to enter forcefully.
09:11They arrested Moore, who was at his residence,
09:14and a Jimenez-armed semi-automatic handgun was discovered.
09:18However, what they encountered next was a scene of unspeakable horror.
09:25Within the confines of the apartment,
09:27the SWAT members discovered the terrifying sight of a decomposing woman's body.
09:32The corpse, in an advanced state of decay,
09:36had deteriorated to such an extent that identification seemed nearly impossible.
09:41The state of the body was nearly mummified.
09:44Even the seasoned SWAT team members were shaken by the gruesome sight before them.
09:49The deceased woman's body was transferred to the Montgomery County Office
09:52of the Chief Medical Examiner for a thorough autopsy.
09:56During his subsequent police interview,
09:58Moore admitted that the deceased woman found in his apartment
10:01was his girlfriend, Denise Middleton.
10:04Shockingly, he confessed to having killed her after a heated argument.
10:08Discovered during the execution of the search warrant
10:10was the body of what appears to be a 26-year-old female
10:16who was eight months pregnant.
10:18Moore chillingly revealed that Denise was eight months pregnant
10:21at the time of her tragic death.
10:23His apathetic confession hinted at a disturbing state of mind,
10:27raising questions about his mental stability.
10:29Once the murderer was in police custody,
10:32the authorities were determined to ensure that both Ayalu Wondimu
10:36and Denise Middleton received justice.
10:39However, before proceeding,
10:40they awaited the crucial autopsy report on Denise's body,
10:44which would provide further insights into the circumstances
10:46surrounding her untimely demise.
10:48Denise Jenna Middleton was born on March 14th, 1996.
10:56She spent her childhood mostly with her cousin,
10:58Temperest Middleton,
10:59who considered Denise to be more like her own sister
11:02instead of a cousin.
11:04According to the Middleton family,
11:05Denise was a caring, humorous, and bright person.
11:09When we heard how badly decomposed her body was,
11:12it was just unbelievable to believe.
11:14From a young age,
11:18Denise exhibited a keen interest in makeup, hair, and cosmetics.
11:22Following her graduation,
11:24she pursued her passion by enrolling in a professional hairdressing school in 2021.
11:29In 2022, she relocated to Silver Spring,
11:32where she began a relationship with Tori Moore.
11:35The couple shared an apartment in the Enclave apartment complex,
11:38and Denise's life seemed to be flourishing.
11:40In the first half of the year,
11:43she joyfully discovered that she was expecting a baby boy,
11:46filling her heart with immense happiness.
11:49Denise, a devoutly religious young woman,
11:52had already chosen the name Ezekiel
11:53in honor of the archangel for her unborn child.
11:57Her future as a mother was brimming with anticipation and hope.
12:01However, her life took a devastating turn,
12:04transforming her dreams into ashes.
12:07Tragically, Denise was murdered by her partner,
12:11Tori Moore,
12:12resulting in the loss of both her life and the life growing inside her.
12:17Just days away from motherhood,
12:19fate cruelly intervened,
12:21snatching away the precious bond
12:22that Denise and her unborn child would have shared.
12:26The autopsy report revealed the horrifying details of Denise's murder.
12:30Shot seven times with the same gun used to kill a Yalu Wondimu.
12:35She'd been deceased for over a month.
12:37The doctors estimated that her life was taken in October of that same year,
12:41extinguishing the bright future she'd envisioned for herself and her baby.
12:45The devastating loss was magnified by the knowledge
12:48that had Denise's life not been tragically cut short,
12:51her child would have had a chance of life if born just a few days earlier.
12:56Adding to the family's anguish,
12:58Denise was also robbed of the dignified funeral she deserved.
13:02Instead, her remains had to be cremated,
13:05amplifying the grief and pain her loved ones endured.
13:09Through interviews with residents of the Enclave apartment and Denise's family,
13:13the police gathered crucial information that shed light on Tori Moore's history
13:17and the disturbing circumstances surrounding the murder.
13:20Tempris Middleton, Denise's cousin, revealed that during their last conversation,
13:25Denise had mentioned being in New York, attempting to distance herself from Moore.
13:30At the time, the last time we spoke to her, she was in New York.
13:35Court documents further revealed that Moore was already wanted
13:37for an aggravated assault charge against Denise in Norfolk, Virginia.
13:40The violent incident highlighted Moore's propensity for aggression
13:44and raised serious concerns about his capacity for harm.
13:48Tempris expressed her astonishment at the lack of awareness
13:51among the Enclave apartment residents regarding the murder.
13:54By them not having a way for people to report
13:57and them not following up on reports,
13:59we couldn't even have a visual of her body for our funeral.
14:04She had to be cremated.
14:06Despite Denise being shot seven times,
14:08there were no reports of gunshots or disturbances on the day of the crime.
14:13The apparent silence and lack of witness accounts
14:15perplexed and troubled Tempris,
14:17who questioned how such a horrific act
14:19could have occurred unnoticed by those living in such close proximity.
14:23Detectives investigating the case
14:24suspected that Moore had been cohabitating in the apartment
14:27with a decomposing body.
14:29Remarkably, there were no reports of anyone missing
14:31or any signs of trouble within the apartment.
14:34It's scary because you never know who your neighbors are.
14:37I'm speechless.
14:38I'm going to pray.
14:40Furthermore, no complaints had been filed
14:41regarding any unusual odors emanating from Moore's residence.
14:45However, one of Moore's neighbors, Tony Pineda,
14:48revealed a chilling detail about an overwhelming stench
14:51that hit him as he stepped out of the elevator.
14:54It smells like trash.
14:55You're like, oh no, this is a bad smell.
14:57Neighbor Tony Pineda describing the unbearable stench
14:59that hits you as soon as you step off the elevator.
15:02He likened the smell to that of decaying trash.
15:05Despite residing in the apartment complex for two years,
15:08Tony had remained unaware of the presence of a decomposing woman's body
15:12just down the hall.
15:14Further investigation into Moore's background revealed a criminal record
15:17and a prohibition on possessing firearms.
15:20This detail reinforced the dangerous nature of his actions
15:23and raised questions about how he'd obtained the weapon
15:25used in both the murder of a Yalu Wondimu and Denise Middleton.
15:29Despite all the questions,
15:33with the evidence gathered and the information obtained,
15:36the police were determined to ensure that justice was served swiftly
15:39for the two victims,
15:40Ayalu Wondimu and Denise Middleton.
15:43Recognizing the urgency of the case,
15:45the authorities expedited the legal process
15:47and Tory Moore was scheduled to stand trial on Monday, December 12, 2022.
15:52In light of the evidence gathered
15:54and the grim nature of the crimes committed by Tory Moore,
15:56the police expanded the charges against him.
15:59In addition to the charges previously filed
16:01in relation to the murder of a Yalu Wondimu,
16:04Moore now faced further charges
16:05pertaining to the death of Denise Middleton
16:07and her unborn child.
16:09Additionally,
16:10Moore faced a crime of violence against a pregnant person charge,
16:13acknowledging the vulnerability of Denise Middleton
16:16during her pregnancy
16:16and the deliberate act of violence committed against her.
16:20The suspect was transported
16:22to the Montgomery County Police Headquarters,
16:24advised of his Miranda rights,
16:25and interviewed.
16:27The suspect confessed to going to the store in question,
16:30engaging in an altercation with the store clerk,
16:32and shooting him.
16:34However, when asked about Denise,
16:36Moore denied killing her.
16:38His earlier confession was inadmissible in court
16:40because it was made before he was read his Miranda rights.
16:44The affiant asked Moore to recount the circumstances
16:46surrounding Denise Middleton's death.
16:49According to Moore,
16:50he traveled to New York City
16:51in order to bring Denise Middleton back to Maryland.
16:54When asked to specify the time frame,
16:57Moore mentioned that he'd left for New York
16:59right after he contacted the Montgomery County Police
17:01about a vandalism incident involving his apartment door.
17:04It was revealed through Montgomery County Police records
17:07that he'd filed the report on May 12, 2022.
17:11Moore then stated that shortly thereafter,
17:14he and Denise had returned from New York City
17:15to Silver Spring.
17:17On the day of Denise Middleton's death,
17:19which wasn't stated,
17:20they'd left the apartment to get food.
17:22According to Moore,
17:24an argument had ensued between him and Denise
17:26on their way back to the apartment.
17:28The female who was found inside of the apartment
17:31and that there had been some type of fight
17:34between the two about one month prior to
17:37that led to the victim becoming deceased.
17:42He stated that he'd pushed her down
17:43in front of his apartment residence.
17:45He claimed that Denise had acted
17:47as if he was trying to kill her.
17:49He then instructed her to get off the ground
17:51and stop putting on a show.
17:53He added that Denise was still agitated
17:55when they reached the residence.
17:57Moore mentioned that a slap might have been thrown
17:59and he might have choked her a little.
18:02After that, he and Denise had entered the bedroom
18:03where he tried to calm her down.
18:06Moore then left the apartment
18:07to purchase some marijuana
18:08and returned within an hour
18:10to find Denise deceased.
18:12When asked if she had any gunshot wounds
18:14or other injuries,
18:16Moore expressed uncertainty.
18:18Additionally, Moore claimed that Denise was pregnant
18:20and had informed him that the baby belonged to him.
18:23He stated that the baby was due in October
18:25and that it was a boy.
18:27However, Moore continued to deny
18:29having killed Denise Middleton.
18:31Furthermore, he mentioned that a few days
18:33after discovering Denise's body,
18:35he'd traveled to California
18:36and stayed there for over a month.
18:38He'd only recently returned to Maryland
18:40in his residence.
18:42However, despite Moore's accounts and claims,
18:44the evidence collected,
18:46including witness statements and other proof,
18:48made it highly unlikely for Moore
18:50to be released from the accusations.
18:52The police and prosecution
18:53had substantial evidence against him,
18:55strengthening the case
18:56for his involvement in both murders.
19:00Moore's criminal history,
19:02including arrests for armed robbery,
19:03first and second degree assaults,
19:05robbery with a deadly weapon,
19:07kidnapping,
19:07narcotics possession with intent to distribute,
19:10and loaded handgun on his person,
19:12highlighted his violent tendencies.
19:13The police also obtained
19:15the aggravated assault report
19:17filed on June 2, 2022 by Denise
19:19from the Norfolk Police.
19:22The first trial for Moore
19:23took place on Monday, December 12, 2022,
19:26at the District Court in Rockville
19:27in Montgomery County.
19:29However, the trial was continued
19:31pending his mental health evaluation.
19:34After a review of the report
19:35from the Office of Court-ordered evaluations
19:38and placements within the Department of Health,
19:40Justice Amy Bills ruled
19:42that Moore was not competent to stand trial.
19:45A preliminary hearing was scheduled
19:46for January 6, 2023.
19:49Moore appeared in court
19:50for additional hearings
19:51concerning his mental state
19:52on December 15th
19:53and December 19th of 2022.
19:56In all these hearings,
19:57he was deemed unfit for trial.
20:00State's attorney, John McCarthy,
20:02expressed concerns about Moore
20:03being a danger to himself
20:04and others if released into the community,
20:06leading to his detention
20:07in police custody without bond.
20:10Moore's request for a release
20:11to pre-trial services
20:12was also denied by a judge.
20:15However, Tempris Middleton
20:16expressed her disappointment
20:18in an interview.
20:19She said,
20:20He's not incompetent at all.
20:22I don't believe he's incompetent
20:24to stand trial
20:25because he was able to tell the cops
20:26what he did to her and why.
20:29Despite the ongoing pain
20:30experienced by the two families,
20:32the case remains unresolved.
20:35However, there is a possibility
20:36that the case might come
20:37to a conclusion soon.
20:39Moore's fate will be determined
20:40after he completes
20:41a mental health program
20:42and has another competency hearing.
20:46Do you believe Moore's mental instability
20:48is enough for him
20:49to escape prison bars?
20:51What sort of justice
20:52do you believe
20:53Wondimu, Denise,
20:54and the unborn baby deserve?
20:57We'd love to hear from you.
