Le docteur Louis Creed, sa femme Rachel et leurs deux jeunes enfants quittent Boston pour s'installer dans une région rurale du Maine. Au cours d'une promenade dans le bois à côté de la maison, la cadette découvre un cimetière d'animaux. Les gens du coin s'y rendent souvent, comme pour un rituel. Le lieu est parsemé de symboles que les Indiens ont gravés sur des troncs d'arbre avant de s'enfuir. Il s'agissait d'un avertissement car ils craignaient cet endroit. Louis Creed et son ami Jud Crandall se rendent sur place une nuit pour en avoir le cœur net. Pour eux, la forêt est hantée. Un jour, un chat enterré dans ce cimetière revient à la vie...
