00:00News Tonight with Peter Jennings
00:01Good evening, there is no more famous shipwreck in the world
00:04and the discovery of the Titanic in the Atlantic off the coast of Canada
00:08has been the dream of countless deep sea explorers
00:11Well, thanks to an American-French team, it is no longer a dream
00:15In a moment, we'll talk to a member of the task force which found the Titanic
00:19We begin with her star cross history
00:21Here's ABC's Bill Blakemore
00:2373 years ago in April of 1912
00:27when the Titanic set out on its maiden voyage from England to America
00:31it was the largest ship yet built, 882 feet long
00:35and, its owners bragged, unsinkable
00:37It had a double-bottomed hull with 15 watertight sections
00:41But on April 12th, it hit an iceberg in the dark and quickly disappeared
00:45until this week when a French-American team pinpointed it on the ocean floor
00:50The Titanic was found some 370 miles south of Newfoundland
00:54two and a half miles down, where there's no light, no plant life, and freezing temperatures
00:59Sonar from a French research ship first located the wreckage
01:03Then, to confirm it was the Titanic
01:05an American Navy ship sent down a new unmanned diving sled called the Argo
01:10outfitted with computerized cameras to a 500-meter-long field of debris on the ocean floor
01:15It immediately spotted the Titanic's distinctive boiler
01:18The American Navy ship USS Knorr is expected home early next week
01:23after it attempts a more complete photographic survey
01:25Iceberg, get ahead, sir!
01:27As four movies and 28 books have since recreated it for us
01:31the massive iceberg tore a 300-foot-long gash through three of the Titanic's watertight sections
01:36In only two and a half hours it disappeared, along with 1,500 people
01:41Only 700 lived
01:43Survivor Ruth Blanchard was a 12-year-old watching from one of the lifeboats
01:47The Titanic was a beautiful sight
01:49The lights were all on
01:52But the rows, there were five or six rows
01:56where people were standing looking over the rail, you know
02:01and wondering, I suppose they were waiting for somebody to take them off
02:06to rescue them
02:07It became instant legend
02:09Some said there was a fortune in jewels on board
02:12along with high society names like Aster, Guggenheim, and Strauss
02:16Whether it will ever be even possible to now raise the Titanic is not clear
02:21But survivor Eva Hart, who was seven, traveling with both her parents, would not favor it
02:26I say because to me it's my father's grave
02:29And I don't ever want to see the Titanic again
02:34I don't want to see it raised
02:36Whether or not it ever can be raised, lawyers are now trying to determine who owns the sunken ship
02:41and any valuables on board
02:43Bill Blakemore, ABC News, New York
02:46This afternoon I talked by ship-to-shore radio with the chief scientist on the Titanic expedition
02:51Dr. Robert Ballard
02:53Have you actually seen the hull of the Titanic standing upright as it's been reported, over?
03:00That's correct, that's correct
03:01It's sitting upright on the bottom
03:03What kind of condition does the Titanic look in, over?
03:07It appears to be in a superb condition
03:09One would expect that given the fact that we're working in extremely deep water
03:15It's ice cold and in total darkness
03:18So it's an environment of high preservation, over?
03:22Do you have any plans to try raising the Titanic, over?
03:26Oh, I think that would be ridiculous
03:28No, absolutely not
03:30In fact, I would like to go and try to ensure that desecration of this memorial to 1,500 souls
03:40It is left the way it is, over
03:42Is there any possibility you might try to raise the cargo, over?
03:47No, I can't believe that it would be economically wise to do such a thing
03:54And I don't want to do that personally at all
03:58And I don't want to contribute to any such undertaking, over
04:01As far as you're concerned, the Titanic should remain where she went down, over
04:06Yes, it's like trying to raise the Arizona Pearl Harbor
04:10I see absolutely nothing to be gained
04:13And I think that a ship like this, being a sailor of many years
04:20You ought to leave it where it is
04:22The souls have now been located and they're fine where they are
