00:00Let's go straight to breaking news out of Sydney now, where a car has crashed into the gates of the Russian consulate with a police officer injured.
00:08Live now to Today Reporter Jack Hahn, who is at the scene for us. Jack, I understand a man has been arrested.
00:15Yeah, that's correct, Deb. Good morning to you. During what was an incredibly tense police operation, general duty officers pulling their guns and aiming their weapons at this suspicious vehicle, which was parked at the Russian consulate about 8 o'clock this morning.
00:27That was the reason for the call to 000. It'll be alleged that a 39-year-old was behind the wheel of this car when police came over trying to speak to this man.
00:38He allegedly jumps onto the accelerator, ploughing into the Russian consulate. He was stopped by barricades and by fences, thankfully for the individuals inside.
00:47An incredibly tense situation. If you look at these shots that we do have, you can see that the windows of this SUV have been banged up.
00:54One would assume by a police baton. At the moment, police have not confirmed if shots have been fired, so it appears that they've used a baton to drag this man out of the car and place him under arrest.
01:03Let's hear from a resident we spoke to just before.
01:07The car was within the compound. There was a policeman drawing his gun, asking for the driver to exit the car.
01:14All right, Deb, so this is still an active crime scene. We've got a very large exclusion zone being set up by Eastern Suburbs Police, and we'll just punch in down there.
01:24You can see that we've got a tow truck. That will be removing the SUV in question.
01:28We have detectives here. They've been very keen to lock this entire street down throughout the morning.
01:34Now, we have had the dog unit on scene and what appears to be an explosive sniffer dog here as well, just scouring the area.
01:40So this is an active police operation at the moment with this street closed, and police are trying to figure out why this man drove into the Russian consulate.
01:49We'll cross back to you as that unfolds further, Jack. Thank you.
