00:00I didn't have a great time in high school.
00:03I just didn't really fit in.
00:05It took me a long time.
00:06I had my very, very awkward cocoon stage.
00:09I went to a high school for the performing arts.
00:12And there was a notice about auditions for this new kids show.
00:16And then one day, my mom called me and told me,
00:19you got the role.
00:21And I just grabbed my bag and left.
00:23And man, what a wild journey that started.
00:30A little Canadian series is shaking up the television industry.
00:34It's seen in 40 countries and won seven international awards.
00:37Thank you all for this award.
00:39It is the longest running and most successful
00:41franchise in TV history.
00:42What does this mean, ribbed?
00:44I watched an episode and was blown away.
00:46Oh my god.
00:47When people talk about my old show on Dawson's,
00:50or they talk about Beverly Hills 90210,
00:52they don't know that the big granddaddy is, Degrassi.
00:55Apparently, the old Degrassi was like bare bones.
00:58The wardrobe was a lot of our own clothes that were brought in.
01:01We also had lunch duty where we helped
01:03live preparing lunch and doing dishes.
01:06It was the 80s.
01:08Hi.
01:08All that stuff that happened on the show
01:11was stuff that was happening to us in real life.
01:13I thought you said you knew how to drive.
01:16Don't worry.
01:17My character was a virgin.
01:18I was a virgin.
01:20She had to be one of my first kisses for sure.
01:22Damn, I never thought about it like that.
01:23It was kind of a whirlwind experience.
01:26Probably like a bit out of body.
01:28I knew that I'd basically be pushed out of the closet
01:31on television.
01:32They were becoming real teen icons.
01:35We love Degrassi!
01:39I'm nervous, man.
01:40Look at all these people.
01:41There's the fans waiting at the hotel.
01:44It's like, wait, reality check.
01:46What?
01:47It was way too much pressure.
01:49Getting called a slut or trash.
01:53You know, there was a lot of hate.
01:56He came from a very troubled background.
01:59I'm sorry.
02:00It was very difficult for some of us to just kind of find our way.
02:05Sometimes you don't want to be known for Degrassi.
02:07I think we all had that.
02:08We were just trying to escape it.
02:09It grew into an empire.
02:11And there are definitely individuals that have made money off of the empire.
02:17Have we always got it right?
02:19Probably not.
02:20Have we told our stories with the best of intentions?
02:24Yes, we have.
