00:14I was in town and I heard that it had burnt.
00:182nd of February I'd woken up, I was 70 years old and three pairs of pants, four shirts,
00:24some underwear and the boots I was wearing. And that was it.
00:27It came through a lot quicker. It just went, it was a stinking hot day.
00:32And it just went through really fast and just, there was no warning.
00:37Jess and I worked 36 hours straight. We didn't eat, we rarely slept, we couldn't sleep.
00:44The fires were all around us. We were a pocket right here.
00:49The National Parks Ranger came up in his four-wheel drive telling us that if we stayed we would die
00:56and we needed to leave immediately.
00:58When it did come in, it came in across that hill over there.
01:02You could see it coming over the ridge top and then it was spotting everywhere.
01:05Just the burning bark and leaves were just igniting things all around.
01:10Burnt down the hill, burnt along the road, burnt along the river.
01:14There wasn't anything that wasn't sort of a light.
01:17I left the day before the fires came and then I was effectively blocked out.
01:24Couldn't get back in again once the fires came through.
01:28I got caught in the fires when they came through.
01:31Took out the house, the outbuildings, everything on the place got burnt.
01:35This place is not supposed to burn. It's just too wet.
01:42And one of the reasons why we bought here was because the bushfire risk was very, very low.
01:51There was areas of bush through here, forest through here that hadn't burnt for thousands of years.
01:58And it was so incredibly destructive. It's not business as usual anymore.
02:05This is all completely different.
02:07Now we have to deal with this every year, the threat of bushfires coming.
02:13What my biggest fear is that the government will turn around and say,
02:16no, you can't live here. We can't ensure your place. You need to move.
02:20And that's, you know, the place that we live in here is beautiful.
02:26And I really, really love it here.
02:29What impact it has on the planet and the environment in general.
02:32I think everybody has to become really aware of that now,
02:35for things to change at the speed that we require it to,
02:39if we're not going to just cascade into an abyss of, yeah, it's just no return.
02:50I think we're going to be aware of that now.
02:53We don't want to see how we want to change.
02:56Bye.
