00:00A public defender is an attorney employed by the community and responsible for giving legal aid
00:08without cost to any person who seeks it and is financially unable to employ private counsel.
00:15It is his duty to defend those accused of crime until the issue is decided in the court of law.
00:21The first public defender's office in the United States was opened in January 1913.
00:27Over the years, other offices were opened.
00:30And today, that handful has grown to a network.
00:34A network of lawyers cooperating to protect the rights of our clients.
00:49But sometimes, a true story within the studio itself can be more exciting than anything conjured up in the mind of a writer.
00:57This story began at National Film Studios.
01:00And we have had so much in our life together.
01:04So do it as whatever will bring gladness to your heart.
01:09As a queen, your gladness will always be mine.
01:16Your name Walton Loring?
01:18That's right.
01:20You police officers?
01:21Yeah.
01:22You're under arrest.
01:23Solving robbery.
01:24I'll get my film.
01:25I'll be right with you.
01:31Assault and robbery.
01:33Those are serious charges.
01:36I know, but I didn't mean to hurt him.
01:39I'm afraid we'll have to come up with something better than that in court.
01:42Maybe if you were to tell me what you and Jack Taney were arguing about,
01:46he owed me money and I'd try to collect it.
01:48You knew that I.O.U. you held of his was outlawed 17 years ago.
01:53He still owed me the money.
01:56I don't understand you, Walt.
01:58At one time, you were a well-known motion picture director.
02:01Now, it's hard to believe that a man of your background would rob a man of a few hundred dollars.
02:06Very few people in this business remember me as a director.
02:09So, let them remember me as a thief.
02:14It was obvious that if I was to help, I had to start somewhere else.
02:19I went out to Walt's former place of employment, National Film Studio.
02:24Loring had many friends on the lot, but no one had any idea why he would have turned to robbery.
02:29I was about to give up when I decided to have a word with Sid Page,
02:33one of the studio's oldest employees.
02:35Loring had many friends on the lot.
