00:00:39Look at the eyes, the concentration.
00:00:41Trying to unsettle the new batsman.
00:00:44Yes, this is fast bowling.
00:00:45They really are going to get it in at it.
00:00:49Oh, it's a good bouncer.
00:00:51That is a quick ball.
00:00:53When he wants to turn it on, he's quick.
00:00:55Oh, yes, that is a fine, aggressive, nasty delivery.
00:01:03All of a sudden, these West Indians are starting to turn it on.
00:01:06Shot into the body.
00:01:08You watch this.
00:01:09I reckon this one will be straight at the jaw as well.
00:01:12Oh, and again, it whizzes past his nose.
00:01:14This is pace like fire.
00:01:16Shooting up, cutting back, snakes in a long way.
00:01:20Oh, that is a magnificent ball.
00:01:28The West Indies reckon they're on a roll here.
00:01:31Keep his eye on the ball.
00:01:32You've got to keep looking at it.
00:01:33Look at it.
00:01:34Look at it.
00:01:35Oh, he's hit him.
00:01:36That's hurt.
00:01:37That's hurt.
00:01:38I've often wondered why he doesn't wear the proper protection.
00:01:41That may have broken his jaw.
00:01:43It's beginning to swell as we speak.
00:01:44That's not right.
00:01:45I really don't care whether you're a West Indian or an Englishman.
00:01:48That cannot be right in critique.
00:01:50All the negative things which were said.
00:01:53A lot of folks felt that we were spoiling the game.
00:01:56We were aiming to kill.
00:01:58No.
00:01:59Aggression meets aggression.
00:02:00And that's how I look at life.
00:02:02You fight, I'm going to fight.
00:02:04We had a mission.
00:02:06And a mission that we believed in ourselves.
00:02:08And we believed that we were just as good as anyone.
00:02:11Equal, for that matter.
00:02:13All is fair in love and war.
00:02:20You know, it was important for me to try and instill some of this belief.
00:02:26It wasn't going to take ordinary individuals to accomplish that.
00:02:30These were a special bunch who felt the same way.
00:02:33Had the same special consciousness.
00:02:35It was a magnificent combination.
00:02:37You're speaking about a group of black guys being successful for a period of time.
00:02:46People couldn't imagine this possible.
00:02:48The teams before were still subservient to the English.
00:02:54They still listened to what the English had to say about their own game.
00:02:58We were called terrorists.
00:02:59And that's a fact.
00:03:00It's not a both.
00:03:01The West Indians are very, very formidable bowling scene.
00:03:08It was representing a region, representing something more significant than just cricket.
00:03:14It was a matter of feeling of work.
00:03:16You know, we were playing to show our people that we were going to make them proud.
00:03:23We were setting standards that future West Indian generations would have to aspire to.
00:03:33That sort of environment that would either make you or break you.
00:03:38And you've got to make a choice which one you want.
00:03:40And we always thought that the day will come when we will beat the rest of the world.
00:03:45In the West Indies, the greatest cricketer is found.
00:04:10We, the Caribbean people, on a whole, have some kind of a knowledge of how to hold the bat or how to bowl the ball.
00:04:20Cricket is something that is a daily situation.
00:04:24We play cricket for the value of cricket.
00:04:28Hey, let's go on a second.
00:04:29Listen up.
00:04:30Keep the dog, them round, sir.
00:04:36Lift the dog when the dog go round, they're there to play with him.
00:04:38Clap him again.
00:04:42Good.
00:04:44Mommy, dear little man.
00:04:46Hey, just make the dog go round, sir.
00:04:49That's the kind of spirit that's in the Jamaican people for cricket.
00:04:59People picture the sunlit islands of the Caribbean to be a place of paradise.
00:05:04But things were not always so peaceful.
00:05:06Our history has been a long and painful struggle against forces that denied and oppressed us.
00:05:12Babylon.
00:05:13And only through cricket could we win our freedom.
00:05:15The 60s and 70s, particularly, it was a real revolutionary time throughout the Caribbean
00:05:27that highlighted the tenor and the temper of the times.
00:05:32Black people were still not regarded as equals.
00:05:34This whole disparity between have and have not, white as have and black as have not, still existed.
00:05:43In the Caribbean, as in America, black power fervor was very much on the rise.
00:05:48Very much part of the upheavals at the time.
00:05:50To imbibe in black West Indians, a sense now of your own power, of your own self-worth and pride.
00:05:57I taught history.
00:06:03Young teacher involved in the whole revolutionary cosmic.
00:06:08I had established a very close relationship with Viv.
00:06:11You know, a lot of those youngsters at the time were very interested in the black power philosophies
00:06:18that were being talked about, and Viv would have been no exception.
00:06:22That was the time where I think the heat was on for you to start getting up and standing up
00:06:27because of some of the things that you felt were happening worldwide.
00:06:32There was a journey for us as black people.
00:06:35Africa had us to be the starting point.
00:06:37The Caribbean people were brought here through colonialism to be cheated of origin, culture,
00:06:46will and bravery transmitted by the chain, the lynch and the lash,
00:06:53conditioned and trained to be a nigger.
00:06:55You are remnants of your ancestors for sure.
00:06:59It runs in the blood.
00:07:01It is a history of a period that one should never forget.
00:07:04Cricket itself was used as one of the instruments of colonising
00:07:10and was very much seen as imparting English aristocratic values
00:07:15to discipline the nigger.
00:07:18And now here it is, we have ex-slaves trying to excel in something
00:07:22which the English masters had brought on.
00:07:25We have an avenue to accomplish,
00:07:27and that avenue, it's the God-given talent of cricket.
00:07:30It's about showing how equal you are
00:07:33and hope that you are a little bit more useful than they see you.
00:07:38So that's the kind of fight, that's the kind of struggle,
00:07:41and they know they have something to do with righting that wrong.
00:07:47It took English society some time to recognise
00:07:54that African people felt that they were stripped of something
00:07:57by colonialism and slavery,
00:07:59and this latest generation want to restore a dignity what was taken.
00:08:06This is the age of the major Caribbean territories
00:08:09asserting their independence.
00:08:12Jamaica in 62, Trinidad, Guyana and Barbados in 66.
00:08:15Independence was seen as the high point of a civil rights struggle
00:08:20that had gone on for a hundred years.
00:08:23We had been born in colonial times.
00:08:26We grew up in independent times.
00:08:28We started thinking like West Indians
00:08:30and not like Englishmen who were living in the West Indies.
00:08:34We all had ambitions.
00:08:35We wanted to be something to prove that we've emerged from being a slave.
00:08:40We wanted to show our emergence as a nation.
00:08:44The existing superstructure has handed out crumbs.
00:08:49We don't want any crumbs, we want the whole loaf now.
00:08:52This team is really, in fact, a mauve piece for these transformations,
00:08:56reflecting the confidence of this independence generation.
00:09:00There's no going back.
00:09:02Cricket has to lead the way,
00:09:03and we have to go through the future as fast as we can.
00:09:06To see someone of your color representing you at that level
00:09:11gave us as folks upliftment.
00:09:14Those guys were heroes,
00:09:16people that epitomized the struggle.
00:09:19That also was a part of the struggle of the Caribbean.
00:09:22It started to take that side of consciousness,
00:09:24and I could identify, more than anything else,
00:09:27the pain which our brothers and sisters would have been through.
00:09:32Their fight certainly was our fight, too.
00:09:36Through the cricket,
00:09:37we would be able to carry a message to the white world
00:09:41to balk this racism
00:09:43by defeating it on the field of play,
00:09:45by truly making the cricket field
00:09:49a level playing field.
00:10:03Cricket, love me cricket
00:10:04I thought you're right for it
00:10:07Cricket, love me cricket
00:10:10I thought you're right for it
00:10:13The Westin is made up of a host of different islands.
00:10:34All of different governments,
00:10:36all of different attitudes towards different things.
00:10:39And those islands only come together
00:10:41under the banner of the Westin is cricket team.
00:10:44It's the only thing we do together.
00:10:46We are very different.
00:10:48And if you travel the Caribbean,
00:10:49the accent's different.
00:10:51The food is different.
00:10:52You experience a variety of things in different islands.
00:10:56So our play, our cricket, spoke for us.
00:11:01Cricket was it.
00:11:02Anybody who grew up in the Westin is
00:11:03wanted to play cricket for the Westin is.
00:11:06You would walk miles and miles.
00:11:08You would find yourself at the beach.
00:11:10Some match was going on and you would join in.
00:11:13Guys would be batting from the time
00:11:14they come home from school
00:11:15until the light faded.
00:11:18As soon as you get out,
00:11:19you're back in the water again
00:11:20or you would be looking around
00:11:21trying to help a fishing boat.
00:11:23When you did catch something
00:11:25that was worthwhile eating,
00:11:26you said the light of fire, you ate it.
00:11:29It was all fun-loving stuff
00:11:30and wow, have a great time.
00:11:33Friendship and bonding
00:11:34and being more or less free.
00:11:35Every time you bowled,
00:11:38you were Lance Gibbs
00:11:39or Wes Hall or somebody.
00:11:42You know, every time you batted,
00:11:43you were Seymour Norris.
00:11:44So Frank Warwell,
00:11:46Sir Gary Sobers,
00:11:47Sir Everton Weeks
00:11:48and all the numerous names.
00:11:50These guys gave you hope.
00:11:52Pioneers, for sure.
00:11:54They were the inspiration.
00:11:55What still persisted
00:11:57up until 1960
00:11:59was that a white man
00:12:00would always be the captain
00:12:02of the West Indies team.
00:12:04It was extremely meaningful
00:12:06to Caribbean people
00:12:07to see a black man
00:12:08now as captain.
00:12:09It thrilled their heart.
00:12:14Excellent cricketers
00:12:16will always be in the annals
00:12:17of the world.
00:12:19But they were not
00:12:19winning combinations.
00:12:21There were sparks
00:12:22and flashes of genius
00:12:24followed by droughts
00:12:25of performances.
00:12:27There was a period
00:12:29where there were 21 test matches.
00:12:31None of them
00:12:32were West Indian victories.
00:12:33People would look at us
00:12:34as happy-go-lucky
00:12:36bunch of people
00:12:36who just like to...
00:12:38Well, the name they had
00:12:39at that time
00:12:41was Calypso Cricketers.
00:12:43You may say
00:12:44that it has some good connotation
00:12:46because Calypso is great music.
00:12:48But at the same time
00:12:48it has some pretty bad connotations
00:12:50in that it meant
00:12:51that OK, you're all fun,
00:12:52frolic,
00:12:53but no real substance
00:12:54entertaining the crowd
00:12:55and then losing.
00:12:57When they left Australia
00:12:58in 1961
00:12:59they were given
00:13:00a motorcade
00:13:01that included
00:13:02a million people
00:13:03through Melbourne
00:13:04for losing
00:13:05in gentlemanly fashion.
00:13:08We were entertainers
00:13:10but we were not winners.
00:13:12And they always feel
00:13:13like any time
00:13:14we could collapse
00:13:15and we had no backbone.
00:13:16It was felt in the Caribbean.
00:13:19Perhaps the feeling was
00:13:20we'll just keep them
00:13:21as the way they are
00:13:22so they can just play cricket
00:13:23because maybe
00:13:24they can't do anything else.
00:13:27We all came
00:13:28from very different backgrounds
00:13:29and to mould it into a unit
00:13:31was never going to be easy.
00:13:33You have to have someone
00:13:34who can keep
00:13:35all those people
00:13:36from different islands
00:13:37together
00:13:38and bond them
00:13:39and get them
00:13:40pointing in the same direction.
00:13:41In the Caribbean
00:13:46we have a saying
00:13:47that ten youngsters
00:13:49thrown together
00:13:50is not a team
00:13:50it's a gang
00:13:51and there is
00:13:52a fundamental difference.
00:13:54This latest generation
00:13:55needed a great captain.
00:13:57My word
00:13:58a Westerners
00:13:58looking to him now.
00:14:03Clay Loy
00:14:03was a very quiet man.
00:14:05Very silly
00:14:05very cool
00:14:06very calm
00:14:07a real thinker
00:14:08the players
00:14:09looked up to him
00:14:10and respected him
00:14:12as their leader
00:14:13and he was a leader
00:14:15he wasn't just a captain
00:14:16he was a leader.
00:14:18Clive was someone
00:14:19that you could approach
00:14:20you thought to yourself
00:14:21this is someone
00:14:22I want to play for
00:14:23this is somebody
00:14:23I want to go out
00:14:24on the field with.
00:14:25He was very conscious
00:14:27of his own family background
00:14:29losing his father
00:14:30at an early age
00:14:32he was the breadwinner
00:14:33of the family.
00:14:35Clive was the father
00:14:36he just led the way
00:14:37he was just the man.
00:14:39Ten years older
00:14:40leading some young boys
00:14:42he mentored them
00:14:43he really led them
00:14:44on and off the field.
00:14:45He instilled
00:14:46that thought process
00:14:48that look
00:14:48we are strong people
00:14:50we came from
00:14:50a strong people
00:14:51we came from
00:14:52kings and queens
00:14:53and we will
00:14:54go back to that
00:14:55which is strong.
00:14:57We are not here
00:14:58to make fun
00:14:59we are here
00:15:00to win.
00:15:01I wanted to have
00:15:02a different team
00:15:04with different thinking
00:15:05shared all the stuff
00:15:07that we had before
00:15:08we are now
00:15:09a team
00:15:10a West Indian team
00:15:12working together
00:15:13so that the young people
00:15:15can understand
00:15:15that hey
00:15:16we can work for
00:15:17a better life
00:15:18and a better future
00:15:18one people
00:15:20one nation
00:15:21one destiny.
00:15:241975
00:15:25and we are at the start
00:15:26of our journey
00:15:27full of youthful ambition
00:15:29and eager to uproot
00:15:30the prejudices
00:15:31of Babylon
00:15:32still we had everything
00:15:33to prove
00:15:34at the top level
00:15:35of the game
00:15:35test cricket
00:15:37a five day contest
00:15:39battling against
00:15:39an opponent
00:15:40very soon
00:15:41we will be facing
00:15:42the toughest test
00:15:42of all
00:15:43travelling to Australia
00:15:44to face the champions
00:15:45on their home soil
00:15:47shot one
00:15:48take four
00:15:48one two
00:15:49turn
00:15:49sweat all day
00:15:53in burning sun
00:15:54Aussie baseman
00:15:56love punch fun
00:15:57batsman
00:15:59with roof
00:15:59dirt is green
00:16:00he gets 100 runs
00:16:02by team
00:16:03already there's
00:16:06an air of expectancy
00:16:07their dashing
00:16:08captain
00:16:08Clive Lloyd
00:16:09is quietly spoken
00:16:10but determined
00:16:11are you very confident
00:16:13of winning?
00:16:13we want to win
00:16:14there's no doubt
00:16:14to go there
00:16:15it has been billed
00:16:16as a sort of
00:16:17world championship
00:16:18so I'm hoping
00:16:20that we can give
00:16:21our best
00:16:22at the moment
00:16:22the Australian side
00:16:24to my mind
00:16:24is the best
00:16:25in the world
00:16:26and I think
00:16:27fast bowlers
00:16:28all through test history
00:16:29have been the difference
00:16:29between a good side
00:16:31and a great side
00:16:32Thompson and Lily
00:16:33are great bowlers
00:16:45Jeff Thompson and Dennis
00:16:46are the most talked
00:16:47about cricketers
00:16:48in the world
00:16:49the underlying point
00:16:50is controversy
00:16:51controversy about
00:16:54bounces or bumpers
00:16:55deliberate intimidation
00:16:57aiming to hit the batsman
00:16:58and bowling bounces
00:16:59at tail enders
00:17:00splendid bowling performance
00:17:08then from Jeff Thompson
00:17:09he bowled really fast today
00:17:10as indeed he has done
00:17:12throughout this match
00:17:13and a great psychological boost
00:17:14for him
00:17:15and for the whole
00:17:16of the Australian side
00:17:16then they are struck again
00:17:18another great performance
00:17:19there by Lily
00:17:20that cricket team
00:17:22decimated
00:17:23every other cricket team
00:17:25around the world
00:17:25they beat everybody
00:17:26at home and abroad
00:17:27they nearly killed England
00:17:29Thompson to Lloyd
00:17:30and hit badly there
00:17:33that time
00:17:33I remember the English
00:17:35literally running for cover
00:17:37and begging for mercy
00:17:38Australia had outstanding
00:17:42fast bowlers
00:17:43fast bowlers
00:17:44and when I say fast bowlers
00:17:45I'm talking about people
00:17:46who really bowl fast
00:17:47not talking about people
00:17:48who just bowl 80-81
00:17:49miles an hour
00:17:50talking about people
00:17:51who bowl 90-90-odd miles an hour
00:17:53because that extra dimension
00:17:55is whether you can get hurt
00:17:56or not
00:17:56and that's when I hit a bad one
00:18:00the batsman is down
00:18:01people get killed
00:18:02it has happened
00:18:03it's like a bullet
00:18:05if there's something
00:18:06in front of it
00:18:07you could be dead
00:18:07now once you have the capability
00:18:12of hurting someone
00:18:14with that ball
00:18:15that person is not thinking
00:18:17about how to play the ball
00:18:18he's thinking about
00:18:19self-preservation
00:18:20I'm trying to scare him
00:18:23trying to hurt him
00:18:24perhaps in the ribs
00:18:25or the leg
00:18:26or something like that
00:18:27so that he at least
00:18:28knows you're around
00:18:29Dennis Lily
00:18:30would stand
00:18:31in front of you
00:18:32and he stands up
00:18:34this enormous figure
00:18:35look you in the eye
00:18:36he wanted that ball
00:18:38he wanted that ball
00:18:38to cause me
00:18:39a great deal of harm
00:18:40he wanted to inflict pain
00:18:43he wanted to injure me
00:18:44the one individual
00:18:45that you found
00:18:46just very difficult
00:18:47to play
00:18:48would be Jeff Thompson
00:18:49he was ruthless
00:18:50in my opinion
00:18:51some of it was a danger
00:18:53he was a danger man
00:18:54Thompson's sport away
00:18:56from the test match arena
00:18:57helps keep him fit
00:18:58for hurling down
00:18:59his thunderbolts
00:19:00it takes a lot of running
00:19:01with a zest
00:19:02akin to collecting
00:19:03test scalps
00:19:04he was a mean man
00:19:11my word it does look
00:19:16a picture today
00:19:17it's always a great moment
00:19:18nerve-wracking one
00:19:19for some players
00:19:20an exciting one
00:19:21for others
00:19:22it is the test of all tests
00:19:26that's why they call it
00:19:29the test
00:19:30test matches
00:19:32to be out in the field
00:19:35for five days
00:19:36you have to have the endurance
00:19:37the race is not for the swift
00:19:40but you can endure to the end
00:19:42that's the test
00:19:44that's the test of every player
00:19:46a lot of young people
00:19:49were in that West Indistia
00:19:50that was either their first tour
00:19:53or their second tour
00:19:54we were green
00:19:55we were young
00:19:56we were inexperienced
00:19:57thrust into international cricket
00:19:59thrown at the deep end
00:20:00you went out
00:20:02and all you could hear
00:20:04screaming in your ears
00:20:05was
00:20:05you felt that
00:20:14there kept me a lot of love
00:20:16going on here
00:20:17it is in your face
00:20:18it wasn't easy walking out
00:20:20to face those guys
00:20:21with the crowd almost
00:20:22on top of you
00:20:23out there
00:20:24it was a war
00:20:25believe me
00:20:26it was a war
00:20:27and they didn't let up
00:20:28they threw the kitchen sink
00:20:30they threw everything at you
00:20:31they let you know
00:20:32well we're in charge
00:20:33and you're not coming
00:20:34on our patch
00:20:35to do well
00:20:36it was a
00:20:37it fought out of a rifle
00:20:38Lillian and Thompson
00:20:39they bounced
00:20:40any and everyone
00:20:41people were bobbing
00:20:42and weaving
00:20:43and ducking
00:20:43and falling
00:20:44on their backsides
00:20:45trying to get away
00:20:46a serious induction
00:20:48into fast bowling
00:20:50that was terrifying
00:20:51absolutely terrifying
00:20:54I remember
00:20:55Lillian bowling
00:20:56a bounce
00:20:56at the Lance Gibbs
00:20:57and Lance
00:20:57at the end of the day
00:20:58went up to him
00:20:59and said
00:20:59listen I've got a wife
00:21:00and kids
00:21:00be careful what you're doing
00:21:01start with fire
00:21:03and direction
00:21:03serious ball
00:21:09I think it got him
00:21:10on the jaw
00:21:11straight up
00:21:13injuries
00:21:14broken fingers
00:21:16broken shoulders
00:21:17cracks on the head
00:21:18and it was humiliating
00:21:20it was like a military
00:21:22assault
00:21:23on West Indies cricket
00:21:25that was a lovely piece
00:21:34of cricket
00:21:34by the Australians
00:21:35that was a nasty series
00:21:51and lots of confrontations
00:21:52on and off the field
00:21:53they knew
00:21:55they knew
00:21:56they were seasoned campaigners
00:21:57and they knew
00:21:59when to turn the screws
00:22:00some of the Aussies
00:22:02has this way
00:22:03if they could not
00:22:04get you out
00:22:04they would rather abuse you out
00:22:06things were said
00:22:08and the colour of your skin
00:22:09came into it
00:22:10when you're constantly
00:22:11being bombarded
00:22:12with comments
00:22:13and behaviour
00:22:14well I encountered
00:22:15some ignorance before
00:22:16but this was very different
00:22:18very very different
00:22:20the crowd
00:22:21people in the crowd
00:22:23did say things
00:22:24things that shouldn't
00:22:25have been said
00:22:25things that weren't
00:22:26politically correct
00:22:27where people would tell you
00:22:29about your heritage
00:22:29or your background
00:22:30or go back to the trees
00:22:31that you came from
00:22:33were you black bastard
00:22:34and I get rather annoyed
00:22:35anyone's going to call me
00:22:36a black bastard
00:22:37because I'm not
00:22:38you stop and look
00:22:41and see where the comment
00:22:42came from
00:22:42then they would laugh
00:22:43and so on
00:22:44because to them
00:22:44it's a big joke
00:22:45it degraded me
00:22:47and downgraded me
00:22:48a great deal
00:22:49I was naive
00:22:52going to Australia
00:22:53and I thought
00:22:54test cricket
00:22:54was a gentleman's game
00:22:56I lost it
00:22:57I just could not believe
00:22:59that this was taking place
00:23:00Michael just went
00:23:01and sat down
00:23:02and could not believe
00:23:03and tears was coming
00:23:04out of his eyes
00:23:04saying he don't know
00:23:06how guys could play cricket
00:23:07like this so hard
00:23:08and yes
00:23:09there was a lot of bickering
00:23:10people started to blame
00:23:11each other
00:23:12batsmen blaming bowlers
00:23:13the bowlers blaming batsmen
00:23:15it was not a very happy
00:23:16dressing room
00:23:17and it was not a happy time
00:23:19there it is
00:23:20Australia winning by
00:23:22seven wickets
00:23:22we got a job in
00:23:26they beat us 5-1
00:23:28when the Weston
00:23:31was annihilated
00:23:32that burned everybody
00:23:34in the Weston
00:23:35is really badly
00:23:36we feel it
00:23:37with tears
00:23:37I see people cry
00:23:39when Weston is loose
00:23:40when Weston is gut
00:23:42people tears come down
00:23:44very disappointed
00:23:45very very disappointed
00:23:49we wonder now
00:23:50if we can come back up
00:23:52when
00:23:53people didn't feel
00:23:55the West Indies players
00:23:56had the fight in them
00:23:57this calypso cricket
00:23:59stigma stuck with us
00:24:01we weren't willing
00:24:03to go there
00:24:03and fight to the end
00:24:04and we just give up
00:24:05when that team
00:24:07returned to the Caribbean
00:24:08it was like soldiers
00:24:09coming home from a war
00:24:10they realised
00:24:11that everything
00:24:12was at stake
00:24:13and Clive Lloyd
00:24:14knew that Weston
00:24:15in cricket
00:24:15was at the crossroads
00:24:16a lot of soul searching
00:24:19went on
00:24:20during that time
00:24:21Clive as a young captain
00:24:24was under pressure
00:24:25he became
00:24:26very depressed
00:24:27even questioned
00:24:28his own
00:24:29right to be the captain
00:24:30they say
00:24:35after humiliation
00:24:37is riches
00:24:39power
00:24:40might
00:24:41and blessing
00:24:42eternally
00:24:43forever
00:24:45fight
00:24:49fight
00:24:50is a game
00:24:52you have to put your heart
00:24:54in to play
00:24:55and keep it up
00:24:57don't
00:24:58fight
00:24:59I can remember
00:25:06Clive said
00:25:07never again
00:25:08if you can find
00:25:09some fastballers
00:25:10who are just as
00:25:12quick as they are
00:25:12or even quicker
00:25:13let us see how well
00:25:15they handle it
00:25:16Clive Lloyd
00:25:17took a very blunt decision
00:25:18we can also
00:25:20play your game
00:25:21we can generate
00:25:22a bowling machinery
00:25:23that will obliterate
00:25:25that can rub you
00:25:26into the ground
00:25:27and decimate
00:25:28so he needed
00:25:34very fastballers
00:25:36and he went
00:25:37through the Caribbean
00:25:38looking for players
00:25:40to fit into his machine
00:25:41he had already
00:25:43picked Michael Holden
00:25:44and saw the talent
00:25:46and the brilliance
00:25:47of this young man
00:25:47and people question
00:25:49Clive Lloyd's knowledge
00:25:50say Clive Lloyd
00:25:51how you bring in
00:25:52Michael Holden
00:25:53he must have 17
00:25:54but Clive said
00:25:55don't watch that
00:25:56this little youth
00:25:57I like him potential
00:25:58the captives
00:26:00were so astute
00:26:01such cricket brain
00:26:02come once in a lifetime
00:26:04oh lord
00:26:05first you had three
00:26:06Wayne Daniel
00:26:08Holding
00:26:09and Roberts
00:26:10fast, furious, aggressive
00:26:12and really could dismiss you
00:26:14it was very skillfully done
00:26:16it was a superb construction
00:26:18this is cricket
00:26:19lovely cricket
00:26:21yes
00:26:21cricket
00:26:22lovely cricket
00:26:24are you ready
00:26:27blow
00:26:28oh lord
00:26:30there's always been
00:26:43the demon black
00:26:44fastballer
00:26:45young strapped in box
00:26:48releasing a thunderbolt at you
00:26:49it can become something
00:26:51of a firing line
00:26:52when you look at a Michael Holden
00:26:55running into bull
00:26:56what you're looking at
00:26:58is an African individual
00:27:00with African rhythm
00:27:02yeah that's really
00:27:04one in a million
00:27:05born to bowl a cricket ball
00:27:07Michael in that stride
00:27:10would put fear into
00:27:11any particular batsman
00:27:12I was just a young man
00:27:14running in
00:27:15bowling fast
00:27:16attracting attention
00:27:18look out for this guy
00:27:19he's coming
00:27:20Andy Roberts
00:27:22was one of the hard-nosed
00:27:23individuals on the team
00:27:24a guy that
00:27:25he would take in the battle
00:27:26anywhere
00:27:27you know
00:27:27I'm a warrior
00:27:29I take fast bowling
00:27:30more seriously
00:27:31than anything else
00:27:32I would say Andy
00:27:33was misunderstood
00:27:34because he hardly ever smiled
00:27:36and people thought
00:27:37he was just a grumpy
00:27:38miserable guy
00:27:39never shown emotion
00:27:40so nobody know
00:27:41what to expect
00:27:42that was me
00:27:44Andy taught me a lot
00:27:46about fast bowling
00:27:47taught me a lot
00:27:48about cricket
00:27:48that could set you up
00:27:50easy
00:27:50you knew how to catch a fish
00:27:52Andy used to have
00:27:53two different bouncers
00:27:54the first one
00:27:56the batsman would
00:27:56sometimes hook it away
00:27:57and get a boundary
00:27:58and the second one
00:28:00with the same action
00:28:01same effort
00:28:02would be a great deal quicker
00:28:03and of course the batsman
00:28:05would feel some pain
00:28:06he could hurt you
00:28:07seriously hurt you
00:28:09and he was the original
00:28:11leader of that face attack
00:28:12not long after Australia
00:28:18we returned home to play India
00:28:20we were eager to banish
00:28:22our humiliation
00:28:23and the show we had
00:28:24the character to win
00:28:25for Clive
00:28:27it was the opportunity
00:28:28to start flooding
00:28:29the newly formed
00:28:30ace attack
00:28:31the pressure was on
00:28:33and was to reach
00:28:34boiling point in Kingston
00:28:36the whole Jamaica
00:28:38come for sea
00:28:39go pack like a sardine
00:28:42there was the feeling
00:28:44that now
00:28:45we were unleashing
00:28:46this firing power
00:28:47let's play the type of cricket
00:28:51that they do not
00:28:52associate us with
00:28:54our guys
00:28:55are going to show
00:28:56that they learned something
00:28:57from Australia
00:28:58how would the Indians
00:29:01withstand our head-on
00:29:03onslaught
00:29:04my heart started beating
00:29:07beating hard
00:29:08and they seem running
00:29:11and then deliver the board
00:29:13right
00:29:13we were making
00:29:18in the really buckle
00:29:21under a pressure here
00:29:23you know
00:29:23the Indian team
00:29:24was like the walking
00:29:25wounded
00:29:25all of them unbroke
00:29:27everybody
00:29:30had get leaked
00:29:31you understand
00:29:32the Indians
00:29:35thought we were
00:29:36overdoing
00:29:37the fast bowling
00:29:37surrendered
00:29:38the test match
00:29:39to the West Indies
00:29:40almost as a
00:29:41show of protest
00:29:42it takes a lot of guts
00:29:46to face fast bowling
00:29:47most people
00:29:48who don't expect
00:29:49to get it
00:29:50complain
00:29:50every time
00:29:52I go out to bat
00:29:53I expect
00:29:54to get my share
00:29:55Australia
00:29:5775-76
00:29:58we didn't complain
00:29:59if it can't take
00:30:02the heat
00:30:02and if it can't
00:30:04take the pace
00:30:05get out
00:30:06I believe that
00:30:08unfortunately
00:30:08the Indians
00:30:09were there to receive
00:30:10the brunt
00:30:11of the revised
00:30:12strategy
00:30:13and the desperation
00:30:15to restore pride
00:30:16what you saw
00:30:18then
00:30:18was a team
00:30:19that had
00:30:20its mind
00:30:21made up
00:30:22do or die
00:30:23ask no quarter
00:30:25and give none
00:30:25that theory
00:30:27was reinforced
00:30:28in Clive's mind
00:30:29because of the results
00:30:30that we got
00:30:31I think
00:30:31then people realized
00:30:33oh okay
00:30:34this can work
00:30:35and it has worked
00:30:35beating India
00:30:41was the first sign
00:30:42we had the firepower
00:30:44to win
00:30:44it was a success
00:30:46but it was still
00:30:46early days
00:30:47for the team
00:30:48soon after
00:30:50we had to face
00:30:50our oldest enemy
00:30:52in the fiercest
00:30:53grudge match
00:30:53of all
00:30:54it was 1976
00:30:56and we boarded
00:30:57the plane to England
00:30:58could we beat
00:31:00our former masters
00:31:01at the game
00:31:02they created
00:31:03this driving ambition
00:31:07was always towards
00:31:08England
00:31:09specifically
00:31:10seeing cricket
00:31:11as the vehicle
00:31:12through which
00:31:13they were expressing
00:31:14rebellion
00:31:14against this British
00:31:15colonizing power
00:31:16we were playing
00:31:19against our old masters
00:31:21and therefore
00:31:23we had to up our game
00:31:24to be able to beat them
00:31:25we wanted to show
00:31:27Englishmen
00:31:28you brought the game
00:31:29to us
00:31:29and you know
00:31:30that we are better
00:31:31than you
00:31:31the English as you know
00:31:34do adore test match
00:31:35cricket
00:31:35England would rather
00:31:38lose a battle
00:31:39than to lose
00:31:39the test match
00:31:40but hearing that
00:31:42you know how serious
00:31:43it is
00:31:43beating England
00:31:46was more satisfying
00:31:47to me
00:31:48than anybody else
00:31:51because I believe
00:31:52that we struggled
00:31:53more in England
00:31:55than anywhere else
00:31:56in the world
00:31:56as usual
00:31:58in those times
00:31:59my family
00:32:00had moved to England
00:32:01in the hope
00:32:02of a better life
00:32:03a pathetic sight
00:32:06already their coming
00:32:08has caused
00:32:09a national controversy
00:32:10what will they find
00:32:12in the land
00:32:12they regard
00:32:12as an elderada
00:32:13at 14
00:32:18having to leave
00:32:19the Caribbean
00:32:19was very difficult
00:32:20arriving in England
00:32:22thrust into an environment
00:32:24that you know nothing about
00:32:25being confronted
00:32:26with a variety
00:32:27of things
00:32:27well of course
00:32:28there are far too many
00:32:30immigrants in this country
00:32:31we do not have sufficient
00:32:32houses
00:32:33jobs and schools
00:32:34for our own people
00:32:35let alone immigrants
00:32:36and unless something's done
00:32:37about this quick
00:32:38that prejudice
00:32:38is going to be
00:32:39sheer bloody hatred
00:32:40there was a vacancy
00:32:41for a flat
00:32:42and on the stairs
00:32:43they were saying
00:32:44all applicants
00:32:45accepted
00:32:45no
00:32:47Irish or Black
00:32:48during the early 70s
00:32:53I didn't have an understanding
00:32:54of what racism
00:32:56was all about
00:32:56had no experience
00:32:58whatsoever
00:32:59it was called a wog
00:33:01I said
00:33:02what the hell is that
00:33:03when guys got angry
00:33:05the things that you would hear
00:33:06you black this
00:33:07you black that
00:33:07you know at times
00:33:09you felt well
00:33:10you know I think
00:33:11I would like to be back
00:33:12in the Caribbean
00:33:13I'd rather to be here
00:33:14my anger came out
00:33:16in the way I played
00:33:17I felt that
00:33:19to forcefully go at
00:33:20what I was doing
00:33:22to attack
00:33:22perhaps was a way
00:33:24of letting out that anger
00:33:25I wouldn't be right
00:33:26to do it on another
00:33:27human being
00:33:28although you felt like it
00:33:29at times
00:33:29but I'm going to
00:33:30sure take it out
00:33:31on five and a half ounces
00:33:32you just take it out
00:33:35on the ball
00:33:35every little bit of power
00:33:38you can imagine
00:33:38going into that strength
00:33:40my bat
00:33:41would have been my sword
00:33:43at that time
00:33:43and it's people
00:33:45who you wanted
00:33:46to put it to
00:33:47everyone wanted
00:33:49to give the West Indian
00:33:50people living in England
00:33:51something to hold on to
00:33:53people who were
00:33:54looking up to you
00:33:55who were
00:33:56willing you on
00:33:57for support
00:33:58if the West Indianers lose
00:33:59they're even afraid
00:34:00to go to work
00:34:01because they know
00:34:02that their workmates
00:34:02was short abuse
00:34:04and they can't
00:34:05leave it down
00:34:05all they had to boast
00:34:08about was the success
00:34:09of the West Indian
00:34:10team
00:34:10to step beyond
00:34:12the sport
00:34:12where there's a whole
00:34:14lot of things
00:34:14needed defending
00:34:15rather than the cricket
00:34:17ball itself
00:34:17people are building
00:34:21people are building
00:34:21these West Indians up
00:34:22I'm not really quite sure
00:34:23that they're as good
00:34:24as everyone thinks
00:34:25they are
00:34:25if they're down
00:34:26they grovel
00:34:27and I intend
00:34:29with the help of
00:34:29Closier and a few others
00:34:30to make them grovel
00:34:31grovel
00:34:32they grovel
00:34:33grovel
00:34:34to make them grovel
00:34:35that wasn't
00:34:36a clever thing to say
00:34:37the timing was
00:34:39very very wrong
00:34:40especially given
00:34:41the situation
00:34:42in South Africa
00:34:42with apartheid
00:34:43here was this guy
00:34:45you know
00:34:46apartheid still going strong
00:34:47and he's gonna make
00:34:49these black guys grovel
00:34:50the appetite was there
00:34:55immediately
00:34:56Clive Lloyd said
00:34:57guys we don't need
00:34:58to say much
00:34:59all men on the television
00:35:01have just said it all
00:35:02for us
00:35:02we know what we gotta do
00:35:04we took that seriously
00:35:06very very seriously
00:35:09took it
00:35:10I've not seen our guys
00:35:12so focused
00:35:13that comment alone
00:35:16was sufficient
00:35:17to set the tone
00:35:18for the whole series
00:35:19the bowlers
00:35:21they really turned on
00:35:22the heat
00:35:23he made the others
00:35:24suffer for
00:35:25what he said
00:35:25sitting hard
00:35:33and typical
00:35:34closely style
00:35:35he hasn't rubbed it
00:35:36and in my word
00:35:42Brian Close
00:35:43did well to
00:35:43avoid quite a nasty
00:35:44accident there
00:35:45he was really
00:35:47fired in
00:35:48extremely quickly
00:35:49only at the last
00:35:50possible minute
00:35:51did he manage
00:35:51to get
00:35:51out of the way
00:35:52that's hurting
00:35:56somewhere around
00:35:59about the mark
00:35:59where earlier
00:36:00he let one bounce
00:36:01off him
00:36:01that really
00:36:02must have stung him
00:36:03close
00:36:04trying to take
00:36:05this pace attack
00:36:05but extremely
00:36:06difficult
00:36:07enough is enough
00:36:12he's really
00:36:13overdone the short
00:36:14pictures
00:36:14going close
00:36:15there's going
00:36:16to be a mass
00:36:16of bruises
00:36:17when he gets
00:36:18back into the
00:36:18haven of the
00:36:19pavilion
00:36:19a new row
00:36:21has erupted
00:36:22over dangerous
00:36:23bowling
00:36:23a former chairman
00:36:25of the cricket
00:36:25society
00:36:26warns that
00:36:27unless rules
00:36:28are tightened
00:36:2910 cricketers
00:36:30will die
00:36:31and 40 more
00:36:32will suffer
00:36:33brain injury
00:36:34through being
00:36:34hit by a ball
00:36:35this summer
00:36:36the world
00:36:37more or less
00:36:38portray the
00:36:39west of these
00:36:39team as brutal
00:36:40bring the game
00:36:42into disrepute
00:36:43but the adrenaline
00:36:44that's going to
00:36:45be pumping
00:36:45the tension
00:36:46that would have
00:36:46mounted from
00:36:47that ill-fated
00:36:48comment
00:36:48you're going to
00:36:50release that ball
00:36:50at a serious
00:36:51pace
00:36:52there were
00:36:53umpires that
00:36:55in the laws
00:36:55of the game
00:36:56were allowed
00:36:57to act
00:36:58to protect
00:36:58people
00:36:58you don't want
00:37:00to hurt
00:37:00someone
00:37:01inevitably
00:37:02a batsman
00:37:03will get hurt
00:37:04and you regret
00:37:05that
00:37:05I always feel
00:37:07when I hit
00:37:08a batsman
00:37:09the sympathies
00:37:10in here
00:37:10you may not
00:37:12see it
00:37:12and I can't
00:37:14show the batsman
00:37:15that
00:37:16but it's just
00:37:17that I have
00:37:17a job to do
00:37:18we're not
00:37:19we're not going
00:37:19to be these
00:37:20happy-go-lucky
00:37:20cricketers
00:37:21that only here
00:37:22to entertain
00:37:22we're going to
00:37:23entertain by
00:37:24this high skill
00:37:25and whatever it
00:37:26takes to win
00:37:26within the rules
00:37:27of the game
00:37:27we're going to
00:37:28do it to win
00:37:29oh that's a fine
00:37:31goal
00:37:32holding stripes
00:37:33again
00:37:33we were made
00:37:35to feel at home
00:37:36away from home
00:37:37the crowds
00:37:38supported us
00:37:39because of the
00:37:39way we played
00:37:40people turned up
00:37:46in their drawers
00:37:47and one section
00:37:48of the ground
00:37:48was just all
00:37:49West Indians
00:37:50and having a ball
00:37:51as good a shot
00:37:55as you will ever
00:37:56see
00:37:56everyone say
00:38:04it was the hottest
00:38:04summer in England
00:38:05for donkey's years
00:38:06well I think the heat
00:38:07was swept by the
00:38:08English
00:38:08not by the West
00:38:09Indians
00:38:10spectators
00:38:16that hardly
00:38:17have had
00:38:17better entertainment
00:38:18the crowd
00:38:19more sore
00:38:20than anyone else
00:38:21took a turn
00:38:23at Tony
00:38:23for what he said
00:38:24they reminded him
00:38:26and they kept
00:38:27all repeating it
00:38:27so I think
00:38:29he got the message
00:38:30whenever he came
00:38:34into band
00:38:35he would have it
00:38:36if they were tired
00:38:38guys would find
00:38:39the strength
00:38:40just to make sure
00:38:40and it wasn't
00:38:41getting him out
00:38:42caught in the slips
00:38:43it was like
00:38:44just knocking
00:38:44his poles over
00:38:45bang
00:38:50wow
00:38:51those were some
00:38:51special moments
00:38:52you can forgive
00:38:58but you never
00:38:59ever forget
00:39:00righteous
00:39:00righteous
00:39:00must always
00:39:01stand
00:39:02cause if you
00:39:03don't
00:39:03prophecy
00:39:04will fulfill
00:39:05upon you
00:39:06and you will
00:39:07cry like
00:39:08Michael Holden
00:39:09and myself
00:39:10had great summers
00:39:11in 76
00:39:12Viv Richards
00:39:13had a great summer
00:39:15in 76
00:39:16so it was
00:39:17bat
00:39:18versus ball
00:39:20in 76
00:39:21every test
00:39:28match
00:39:28that
00:39:28he looked
00:39:29invincible
00:39:30and a terrific
00:39:32shot
00:39:33this really
00:39:33master batsman
00:39:34the master
00:39:36blaster has
00:39:37arrived
00:39:38there was so
00:39:40much talk
00:39:41about
00:39:41intimidatory
00:39:42bowling
00:39:42well we had
00:39:43a batsman
00:39:44that didn't
00:39:44mind
00:39:44if you
00:39:45bowl
00:39:45six
00:39:45bounces
00:39:45at him
00:39:46he would
00:39:48not have
00:39:48been scared
00:39:49he came
00:39:50and stood
00:39:50his own
00:39:50you know
00:39:51take that
00:39:52in your
00:39:52ass
00:39:52man
00:39:53batman
00:39:54you have
00:39:54a bat
00:39:54in your
00:39:55hand
00:39:55defend
00:39:55yourself
00:39:56that sort
00:39:56of attitude

00:40:03with some
00:40:03chewing gum
00:40:04in mouth
00:40:04I back
00:40:05myself
00:40:05every time
00:40:06what a
00:40:09shot
00:40:09it's
00:40:09new
00:40:09he's

00:40:27I felt
00:40:27that we
00:40:28were kicking

00:59:22in
00:59:22the
00:59:22world
00:59:22this
00:59:39this was the first time the West Indies have produced something which was the best the world had seen
00:59:46here we are several dots on the map dominating the world
00:59:53it's difficult to describe the feeling you know there was joy beyond words
00:59:58we're on a high celebration time everything was working out to perfection
01:00:05we went to Pakistan and we're the only team to beat Pakistan in Pakistan ever we went to India and beat India again as the only team to have done that
01:00:14West Indies
01:00:15West Indies bowling was poetry in motion at that time you have never seen it since
01:00:20we just wanted to win everything we wanted to win every game we put our feet on them kept them down and beat them
01:00:28you can't beat a team like that
01:00:32all you can beat a team like that
01:00:34then the West Indies began to win so consistently
01:00:39it triggered a pride in the workplace it triggered a pride in the way we dress in the way we went into studios and recorded
01:00:47African culture had been criminalized and driven into the ground for 300 years
01:00:53at the first opportunity to be free to express itself it comes up to the surface and it comes back there again and
01:01:01suddenly we have this extraordinary emergence of culture in the Caribbean
01:01:07Bob Marley in the Wailers
01:01:10Jimmy Cliff coming with aggression abrasion and a force of change
01:01:16you combine all of that with the West Indies cricket success
01:01:21unbelievable
01:01:22they thought that we were heroes
01:01:26but to me they were heroes
01:01:29Bob Marley come to the dressing room telling you you gotta win
01:01:33Mass Croft man rotted we gotta get these men out quick brilliant
01:01:36that's a period of history that will forever be the most productive time of our lives
01:01:41they start to boast
01:01:44instead of being ashamed they can wave their flags and say our heroes made us look good
01:01:52you know all these things are totally inspiring stuff you know sound in the protest bell
01:02:00spell stand up stand up to me it's not a crime it is about standing up for what you believe in
01:02:20and you walk into the field and it's totally embedded in your mind you may call it your
01:02:27battlefield music yeah I will never ever forget with written that I speak about it now I can
01:02:34picture him right there in his heart burns the custom culture of Rastafari he was rasterized
01:02:45but a lot of people didn't know that came from him having to do with Bob Marley he always find
01:02:52himself in the company of the whalers had he not been involved in cricket he would have surely
01:02:59been a dread-lap Rastaman real deal we've was very very much the darling of Caribbean peoples you know
01:03:14he was really the extension philosophically of Clive Lloyd taking it now to a further consciousness
01:03:22of spiritual religious thought there was really becoming into the fullness of identity as an
01:03:30African even his armband that he wore showed the African colors the green for the land itself the
01:03:38yellow for the gold taking away and stripped away the red meant the blood that was shed those particular
01:03:46colors and what it meant take time out play this one for brothers and sisters in South Africa African
01:03:59people unite man there's a great sense of sympathy for these struggles for independence in Africa at the
01:04:27time be they Mozambique Zimbabwe or South Africa the anti-apartheid fight the anti-colonial fight was very
01:04:37much the heart of the Caribbean struggle also you felt seriously embodied with the folks who were
01:04:44suffering in South Africa this human injustice taking place for so many years it was a real sense
01:04:50of horror black people being just shut down mercilessly and particularly those Alsatian dogs running
01:04:56through Soweto fighting up people etc it brought tears to the eyes of Caribbean watchers man there was
01:05:03always the feeling that we could do everything to assist them not only in song and in cultural
01:05:09expressions but in the field of cricket also in imposing the sanctions against South Africa 17 West
01:05:19Indian cricketers are to play in a country which has been banned from international cricket because of its
01:05:24apartheid policies so that it was a great abhorrence when some of our cricketers defied the sanctions and
01:05:31went to play in South Africa this is a major propaganda coup for South Africa the fact that
01:05:35they're black will be seen as giving some credibility to the South African regime most Caribbean people were
01:05:42in shock how can you go and support a regime like that as Kerry Packer said every man has his prize money
01:05:50is everybody's God let's be honest we have to look after yourself the team is believed to include Colin
01:05:57Croft lured by the 70,000 pound contract former Jamaican Prime Minister Michael Manley said the rebel players were
01:06:05mercenaries I'm a mercenary when I went to world series cricket was I not a mercenary there I'm not
01:06:11sure I understand the differences it's not a game it's my livelihood this is my job no we wanted to know
01:06:19who else is going where are they after every man has his prize how he conducts himself will determine how
01:06:28he will rate in history well it was an open check basically for my figure at the time if I had signed
01:06:37then then I think we would have had the Exodus I think Westerners team would have dismantled at that
01:06:42particular period I felt that I had to show some leadership not going to the apartheid regime in South
01:06:51Africa I will not go they cannot pay me enough money the sacrifices vibrators made is really heroic I
01:06:59see a serious correlation between Muhammad Ali and the Richards one throwing away a medal refusing to
01:07:06fight an unjust war and the other one refusing to take a million dollar check from an unjust society one
01:07:12of the things on the table is that whilst there you're going to be an honorary white how can a black
01:07:21man be an honorary white man what is wrong with the color of my skin what is wrong with my ethnicity why
01:07:31should everyone tell me I've got to be an honorary anything apart from what I am these guys are sold
01:07:38out having no accepted the term honorary white if they paid them enough money they'd be willing to
01:07:43even accept chains on their ankles I was disgusted those rebel cricketers they were bringing down the
01:07:51wrath of our ancestors and they were bringing down the curses of the African spirits by having betrayed
01:07:57the cause of African rebellion and of African liberation I had an incident in South Africa where I was asked to
01:08:06remove myself from my free and carry it because it was for whites only that's it's not fine a lot of people
01:08:14can say well look embarrass the Caribbean I take whatever comes with it West Indian cricket authorities have
01:08:21banned its players who defied an international boycott and gone to play in South Africa
01:08:26they were destroyed their career were torn down their respect was you know to the dust to the garbage
01:08:36Caribbean people just ostracize them just cast them off the map totally their life was just
01:08:43generally made very miserable nothing good ever came of many of them some of them was thought to
01:08:48have gone kinky getting hooked on cocaine or other debilitating drugs and that's another devilish curse I had
01:08:56heard some of the players who came back to badly treated I had heard that some of them had fallen in hard times
01:09:02but when I came back from South Africa I didn't come back to the West Indies I went to Florida it hurt to
01:09:09not be a part of that team being able to walk down the street hold your head high that was better than
01:09:16millionaires that was better than gold these guys will always be my friends regardless of the decisions that
01:09:22that they made in life I'm not in any position to judge anyone but the Jews are out there
01:09:28I met Desmond Tutu and he said Nelson Mandela we appreciate you what the West Indies was doing at the
01:09:38time thank you so much in helping to dismantle the apartheid regime in helping the
01:09:44movement of some of our struggling brothers and sisters when I heard that I was rather moved
01:09:50wow they knew who you were and they knew exactly the part you played it felt very appreciated
01:09:57the struggle goes on even though you were winning as much as you are you got to be so aware and be
01:10:11watchful that's when the evil side of things and the racism could easily catch you off guard you stop
01:10:20taking the punches now and start giving some all of a sudden some have a problem with that
01:10:25every time there have been successful black expressions be it culturally sporting or politically there have been attempts to bring it down the English press have always been
01:10:27Every time there have been successful black expressions, be it culturally, sporting or
01:10:49politically, there have been attempts to bring it down.
01:10:54The English press have always been very, very, very damaging.
01:10:58How we suffered the amount of pressure that the English press used to put us on.
01:11:04I know that I think this cricket is rubbish.
01:11:07What you're doing is you're staging a human coconut shine.
01:11:11Some of the players thought their level of criticism was racial.
01:11:14Because they couldn't get you, colour was always the next thing.
01:11:18I don't suppose they expected the success to have gone on so long.
01:11:22I always thought that they'll fall soon.
01:11:24Yeah, a couple of years and then they'll be back where we know them to be.
01:11:28They wanted the old style West Indies, entertaining and losing.
01:11:32When that changed, a lot of people didn't like that idea.
01:11:35This is the body armour required against the West Indies.
01:11:38Self-preservation is the name of the game.
01:11:40We were never given credit.
01:11:42We were always being looked upon as though our success was mainly to intimidation.
01:11:48Those sort of things will make me lose my cool.
01:11:52People who didn't have the fast bowlers were the ones who were critical.
01:11:55Let no one fool you.
01:12:02Everyone wanted to have fast bowlers the way we did.
01:12:07Everyone.
01:12:08There was jealousy.
01:12:10It went to the very top.
01:12:12The English people in authority decided to restrict the West Indies.
01:12:16Different rules and limitations on how you can bowl the ball.
01:12:20It was just too much.
01:12:22They did everything to stifle the success of West Indies cricket.
01:12:27And they always thought that they would kill us.
01:12:29Going to England in 1984.
01:12:33We wanted to send a message that when we are hurt, we'll come out fighting.
01:12:37The drive against England.
01:12:39It was a matter of making sure that what we started, we were going to finish.
01:12:44Can we do it again?
01:12:46Let's go there and prove that the first one wasn't a fake.
01:12:50The great occasion of the summer, England and the West Indies.
01:13:01Two teams locked in battle.
01:13:03A very, very important stand this for England.
01:13:07England had very good players during that period.
01:13:10Some of the best in the world.
01:13:12And some fiery exchanges out there.
01:13:15They could compete.
01:13:21Somewhat immense pressure.
01:13:23The English were saying that this is the best chance to beat us.
01:13:27It was a who draw first blood situation.
01:13:31Great shot.
01:13:33Excellent start by Inwood.
01:13:36And Otham breaks through.
01:13:38Lovely display of aggression.
01:13:40And Alan Lamb goes to a century.
01:13:43That test match at Lord's.
01:13:46They were in the ascendancy.
01:13:48The West Indies deep in trouble now.
01:13:50I can remember wondering to myself.
01:13:53Are we going to win this game?
01:13:56Facing the fire.
01:13:59It was pressure for me.
01:14:01Is today going to be my day?
01:14:04All these things you would have gone through.
01:14:07Those years of hurt.
01:14:09Now have to be put in focus.
01:14:12That's an extraordinary strike.
01:14:13That's an extraordinary strike.
01:14:17And that went off like a riot.
01:14:18The West Indian spectators delirious.
01:14:20Win gone on his best.
01:14:21I tell you it's brilliant to watch.
01:14:22And that day at large, you know, you just look unstoppable.
01:14:23The West Indian spectators delirious.
01:14:24Win gone on his best.
01:14:25I tell you it's brilliant to watch.
01:14:26And that day at large, you know, you just look unstoppable.
01:14:27He was just in awesome form.
01:14:28flying it to all parts of the ground.
01:14:29The West Indian spectators delirious.
01:14:30Win gone on his best.
01:14:31I tell you it's brilliant to watch.
01:14:33And that day at large, you know, you just look unstoppable.
01:14:34He was just in awesome form.
01:14:35Flying it to all parts of the ground.
01:14:36I applauded him all the way back to the pavilion.
01:14:37214 not out.
01:14:38And what seemed to be an almost impossible assignment has turned out to be the best.
01:14:42The West Indian spectators delirious.
01:14:44The West Indian spectators delirious.
01:14:45Win gone on his best.
01:14:46I tell you it's brilliant to watch.
01:14:47And that day at large, you know, you just look unstoppable.
01:14:52He was just in awesome form.
01:14:55Flying it to all parts of the ground.
01:14:58I applauded him all the way back to the pavilion.
01:15:01214 not out.
01:15:02And what seemed to be an almost impossible assignment has turned out to be an absolute
01:15:08dollar.
01:15:09And I think that was a defining moment that we felt that we could come from the brink regardless
01:15:14of whatever.
01:15:15We were now fighters.
01:15:16We didn't know when we were beaten.
01:15:18Nothing was too daunting for us.
01:15:22And out of that spirit emerged this youngster called Malcolm Marshall.
01:15:27Once Malcolm Marshall went out, you knew that he was going to produce.
01:15:34Marshall strikes again.
01:15:36Malcolm was a guy who just exude this sort of brilliance.
01:15:40The future of the ball and the top was always there.
01:15:43That was Malcolm.
01:15:44Malcolm Marshall bearing a double fracture.
01:15:47He broke his arm.
01:15:48It was in plaster.
01:15:49I said, you think you can play with that?
01:15:51He said, well, if you want me to, I will.
01:15:54To see him come out with one arm in the plaster of Paris, I think made him a giant of a man
01:16:01really.
01:16:02There was a guy who was in excruciating pain, running up the ball at the speed of light.
01:16:07Ran out on bats and won the game for us.
01:16:11That showed the spirit of our team.
01:16:15The statement made, you know, just very, very powerful.
01:16:19He didn't miss glasses to believe this.
01:16:22It's not just the man out in the field bowling the ball and trying to get the opponent.
01:16:28It's the man watching the radio.
01:16:30He says, we're going to bowl him now.
01:16:32We have to get him now.
01:16:34And I've seen this happening.
01:16:36Billy and it turns to jail.
01:16:41What the man's in?
01:16:43How's he doing?
01:16:44What is toughie like?
01:16:47How is that?
01:16:48And it started to...
01:16:50How the world was that?
01:16:51Feel the stump fly.
01:16:53I've seen that as a game going over there.
01:16:56I've just chopped faster.
01:16:58Big nights in the place.
01:16:59You know, they get what they want.
01:17:00No fun I can tell you for any England batsman.
01:17:03that's the kind of unification that's the kind of willpower that the people develop
01:17:13you were just seeing something totally brutal and all what it needed was the finishing touches
01:17:21at the end of four test matches we were four nil up we could have taken the foot of the
01:17:25gas we never played cricket like that not this team i played for anyway
01:17:28don't let them fool you we were humiliating them we were really making them grovel by
01:17:36they're not being allowed to win even one there was this feeling that we could be looking at five
01:17:43done the white star the angels got mad and you run down so get west please plug everyone down
01:17:51sir it went crazy you're talking a tremendous amount the energy i could imagine the noise
01:17:58and the various islands i could see the passion how people felt
01:18:06all these guys had a very special message i think we are an equal power in here
01:18:10babylon it's not a place it's a practice that is unrighteous me not rating you because of your
01:18:21color not treating each other as human beings that is babylon the english had difficulty in recognizing
01:18:29what west indians had done with cricket but guess what i think they came to like it
01:18:34this was going to change the game forever and it was going to bring value that is what you call
01:18:41cultural exchange in its finest sense live for yourself you live in vain live for others you live
01:18:49again one love they were part of us whatever we did what we achieved we brought a lot of songs to
01:18:59people to the people who were struggling we defeated england beating them every test of the series
01:19:06represented a total reversal of our humiliation and our full flowering as a cricketing power
01:19:13even in changing it from whitewash and calling it now blackwash black is beautiful black is bright
01:19:20that to me epitomized everything that we represented bravery wanting to succeed the true west indian feeling
01:19:34there was a lot that we had to overcome we did not complain and here we are one of the greatest sporting
01:19:41teams in the history of team sports
01:19:44to be around people who you had an enormous amount of respect for and to able to have done that with
01:19:56them especially yeah all right let me cut it short it was like slave whipping the asses of masters
01:20:14these are rare moments in one's life especially with the struggles that one would have been through
01:20:20it is history that you'll never forget that's what it was
01:20:34i see your face in front of me still grainy from that old black and white tv my whole family silence
01:20:47in silence watching you shake destiny with your two hands faster than i can see
01:20:56you know what i just take a few facts 10 years old there's a fact an undisputed fact that between
01:21:03february march of 1980 and february march of 1995 the west indies did not lose a test series
01:21:1215 years they did not lose a test series and no other sporting team in any discipline anywhere in
01:21:19the world dominated their sport for 15 years and we are very proud of that
