00:00:00THE END
00:00:30Oh, my God.
00:01:00Oh, my God.
00:01:30Good morning, Mr. Wiggins.
00:01:37Alice, one of these mornings, I'm going to the mail before you can snatch it away.
00:01:41As far as I'm concerned, you didn't even have to stop today.
00:01:44Your army captain don't write very regularly, does he?
00:01:47It's been...
00:01:48Eight days.
00:01:49That long?
00:01:50I could have sworn it was only a week.
00:01:53Let's see.
00:01:54Last time he wrote, he was stationed in Florida.
00:01:57Idaho.
00:01:58The letter before came from Florida.
00:02:00Oh, that's right.
00:02:01That's right, yeah.
00:02:02The army sure keeps Captain Voss moving around.
00:02:04Well, he knows more about electronics than any man they've got.
00:02:07You don't say?
00:02:08Why, before he was transferred, he set up a whole radar system around Lockheed.
00:02:12No kidding.
00:02:13And since then, the army's just been shipping Jim all over the country.
00:02:17It seems to me they ain't leaving much for the other nine million men in service.
00:02:20I didn't mean that.
00:02:23And besides, you've heard all this before.
00:02:26A hundred times.
00:02:28But all I can say is, this young Edison must be a pretty wonderful guy to have a girl like
00:02:34you, Alice.
00:02:35It's me that's lucky.
00:02:37Well, here's hoping you get luckier.
00:02:39And maybe, uh, when Captain Voss finishes wiring up the state of, uh, Kentucky, they'll give
00:02:46him a furlough.
00:02:47Kentucky?
00:02:48He's not in Kentucky.
00:02:49Oh, well, that, uh, that's a Kentucky postmark, if I ever seen one.
00:02:55Oh, Mr. Wiggins, I hate you.
00:02:57He is in Kentucky.
00:02:59See you tomorrow, Mr. Wiggins.
00:03:19On your feet, boss.
00:03:31We need some help.
00:03:32The metal detector's gone dead on us.
00:03:48There must be somebody else around here who can fix it.
00:03:50Why don't you guys give me a rest?
00:03:52Because your work's better.
00:03:55And the price fits the prison budget.
00:03:58Who says I can fix it?
00:04:00Well, if you can't, genius, we'd just better close up shop.
00:04:03Come on.
00:04:04Let's keep the warden happy.
00:04:05That ought to do it.
00:04:15That ought to do it.
00:04:24Try this wrench.
00:04:25Thanks, boss.
00:04:36It's all right, lieutenant.
00:04:37Call me anytime.
00:04:38That is, anytime in the next four years and 12 days.
00:04:41You can head back to the rest of the men.
00:04:42Hey, Joe, when are you getting out?
00:05:03Tomorrow morning, 5 o'clock.
00:05:05And don't forget your promise.
00:05:07Don't mail this letter till you get to Maryland.
00:05:09Wouldn't it be easier to tell this chick her captain's a jailbird?
00:05:13You ain't the first guy that swiped government property.
00:05:16Oh, shut up.
00:05:16Just mail the letter.
00:05:17Okay, okay.
00:05:25What does Jim have to say, Alice?
00:05:28All the things I want him to say, Mother.
00:05:30That's nice.
00:05:34Anything about his coming home, dear?
00:05:38No.
00:05:39They've transferred him again.
00:05:42To Maryland.
00:05:45You'd think, with the way they've been working him,
00:05:47they'd give him a furlough.
00:05:51From the way he writes, he doesn't even expect one.
00:05:53Not that he complains.
00:05:56So I guess I shouldn't.
00:05:59Mother!
00:05:59Alice!
00:06:01Did you hear?
00:06:02On the radio.
00:06:03They're talking about a bomb they just dropped in Japan.
00:06:07They think it'll end the war.
00:06:08This unprecedented and historic announcement of an atom bomb.
00:06:14A nuclear weapon releasing energies in unbelievable amounts.
00:06:18Dwarfing by hundreds of times the force of conventional explosives.
00:06:22Fragmentary reports heard on the Tokyo radio hint of great devastation in the city of Hiroshima.
00:06:29The strategic target area selected by the Allied command for the awesome bomb's first use against the enemy.
00:06:35And it is more than barely possible, say reliable reports,
00:06:39that this new and fearfully destructive atomic weapon will bring Japan's warlords to their knees.
00:06:46Oh, Mom, maybe this is the end of it.
00:06:52Maybe it'll bring Jim home.
00:06:54Honey, I hope so.
00:07:08Hey, what's the matter with you, boss?
00:07:09Don't you know the war's over?
00:07:11So what's it gonna get you?
00:07:12A bowl of rice and a free ride on the Emperor's white horse?
00:07:15Or maybe you wish we lost the war.
00:07:17I lost the war during my court-martial.
00:07:29Hello, Jim.
00:07:31Chaplain.
00:07:31Sit down, Jim.
00:07:32I want to talk to you about your future.
00:07:34Future?
00:07:36Aren't you being a little premature, chaplain?
00:07:38You can start thinking about it right now.
00:07:41That's why I sent for you.
00:07:42You're leaving.
00:07:45You mean they're letting me out of here?
00:07:48The president has reviewed your case.
00:07:50He feels that many boys like you, uprooted from normal lives, rushed into the army, might have made mistakes they wouldn't have made otherwise.
00:07:58The mistake I made was taking a little army equipment.
00:08:02But nobody blames the army captain's pay at that.
00:08:04Don't try to justify what you did, Jim.
00:08:07You can't.
00:08:09No more than you can excuse what you did as a student at that school down in Los Angeles.
00:08:14I was just a kid then.
00:08:17So were the others who trusted you with the class funds.
00:08:20I told you I paid it back.
00:08:22Every cent of it.
00:08:26I'm not as concerned with the Jim boss who came in here as I am with the Jim boss who's going out there to a new life.
00:08:33You've always taken the easy path, Jim, and found reasons for it.
00:08:41But they were never truthful reasons.
00:08:43And you just can't compromise with the truth.
00:08:48There'll be a lot of times out there when the going will get rough.
00:08:52But then you must question your decision.
00:08:54Ask yourself, is this what is right or is this what is easy?
00:08:58Don't worry, chaplain.
00:09:00I appreciate this break.
00:09:02I'll protect it.
00:09:04Are you going to start out by telling that girl?
00:09:07Tell her what?
00:09:10I, I know about those letters you've been sneaking out of here.
00:09:15Letters signed by a captain on active duty.
00:09:18Oh, those.
00:09:21I just didn't want to hurt Alice with it.
00:09:24With the truth?
00:09:26She'll have to know sooner or later, Jim.
00:09:29For one thing, you won't be going home as a captain.
00:09:31You'll be dissed to private.
00:09:33But what is more important, if she's half the girl you think she is, you owe it to her.
00:09:39It's a pretty tough assignment.
00:09:41Yes.
00:09:42You might even lose her.
00:09:44But it's a lot easier to bear the setbacks if you know you've approached them with honesty and courage.
00:09:52You're right, of course, chaplain.
00:09:55Good luck, Jim.
00:09:58Thank you, chaplain.
00:09:59Yeah, yeah, it won't be too long.
00:10:14All right.
00:10:15Oh, uh, Alice, there's something else I have to tell you.
00:10:20You've told me everything you have to for now, darling.
00:10:23You're coming home.
00:10:24That's all that matters.
00:10:26Why, even your decorations don't count.
00:10:30My decorations?
00:10:32Now, don't tell me the Army hasn't just loaded you down with medals for what you've done.
00:10:36By the way, what do I call you now, Major Voss?
00:10:39No, no, no promotions.
00:10:43It's still kept.
00:11:04Alice, it's Jim.
00:11:05Hiya, Helen Lewis.
00:11:07Good to see you.
00:11:17Oh, I thought you'd never get here.
00:11:21I had to find a million other guys for train space.
00:11:24You're back.
00:11:24That's the important thing.
00:11:26Mrs. Park.
00:11:27Hello, Jim.
00:11:29Welcome home.
00:11:32Wow, look at all those medals.
00:11:34What are all those stars?
00:11:36They're, uh, battle stars, Helen.
00:11:39Alice never told us you were overseas.
00:11:42Where were you?
00:11:46What was it like?
00:11:47You didn't get wounded, did you?
00:11:49Give him a chance, Helen, one question at a time.
00:11:52What battle was this, Jim?
00:11:55Oh, for goodness sake, Helen.
00:11:57Let him catch his breath.
00:11:58He'll be around for a while, you know.
00:12:01Yes.
00:12:03I'll be around for a long time.
00:12:13And it hasn't been so very long, darling.
00:12:15What can you expect in a few months?
00:12:17It seems like years.
00:12:20You can count the number of customers I've had on one hand.
00:12:23Look.
00:12:26Not enough business to pay the first month's rent.
00:12:30Better have a pretty good excuse for the landlord next month.
00:12:34I can help, Jim.
00:12:40I'm afraid the secretary's salary wasn't designed
00:12:43to put a man on the road to his first million.
00:12:46Do you have to have a million dollars?
00:12:47You know what I want for you.
00:12:50Do you really, honey?
00:12:52I want to give you everything.
00:12:55But I didn't ask for everything.
00:12:58No, and you didn't ask for a guy
00:13:00that couldn't afford to buy his way
00:13:01into a penny arcade, either.
00:13:06Jim, we have each other.
00:13:09Isn't that important?
00:13:10Sure it's important.
00:13:12But we can't get married.
00:13:14Why not?
00:13:15Where would we set up housekeeping?
00:13:18At your folks' home or mine?
00:13:21It would only be for a little while, darling.
00:13:23Why, with your know-how,
00:13:25it's just a question of time.
00:13:27It won't work.
00:13:29I've got to have my own house,
00:13:31furniture, new car,
00:13:34respectability.
00:13:36Respectability?
00:13:37What about your war record?
00:13:40What you did for your country?
00:13:46Jim, you do what you think is best.
00:13:50I'll see you later for dinner.
00:13:51Let's go to that little pizza place.
00:13:53Sure.
00:13:55It's about time I gave your mother a rest.
00:13:57A guy at the corn drugstore
00:14:01said you could use some business.
00:14:03What kind of business?
00:14:04Just radio.
00:14:05You tell that guy at the drugstore
00:14:07this isn't a radio repair shop.
00:14:08He already knows that, buster,
00:14:10but he figures an engineer
00:14:11might do a better job.
00:14:12Oh, he could do a better job.
00:14:14Don't be so stuffy, Jim.
00:14:15You could do it as a favor
00:14:16for the gentleman.
00:14:19All right, let's have a look at it.
00:14:21Let's go.
00:14:21Let's go.
00:14:21Let's go.
00:14:21Let's go.
00:14:27The boss would like it back
00:14:34as soon as possible.
00:14:35The boss?
00:14:36Mr. Rumsden.
00:14:38Charles Rumsden.
00:14:40Am I supposed to know who he is?
00:14:42You ain't been in L.A. long, buddy,
00:14:43if you don't.
00:14:44Lived here all my life, mister.
00:14:49Here's your trouble.
00:14:51With labor and parts,
00:14:52it'll cost you $20.
00:14:53Yeah, that's pretty steep, ain't it?
00:14:55You said you wanted it fixed right.
00:14:56It'll take me several hours.
00:14:58Deliver it?
00:14:59If I have to.
00:15:01Here, here's the address.
00:15:03I'll get right to it.
00:15:12You're going to be busy, Jim,
00:15:13so I may as well get back to the office.
00:15:16Not too busy.
00:15:17It's already fixed.
00:15:19But you told him
00:15:21it would take several hours.
00:15:22All that was wrong
00:15:23was a loose battery connection.
00:15:26You charged him $20.
00:15:29Ah, the way the chauffeur talked,
00:15:30his boss can afford a good price.
00:15:32And I can afford to take you
00:15:34to dinner for a change.
00:15:36It isn't right, Jim.
00:15:38Oh, honey.
00:15:39Tonight we'll go to a real restaurant.
00:15:41Steak instead of pizza.
00:15:43But, Jim, you should...
00:15:46Never mind.
00:15:47I'll meet you here at six.
00:15:54Okay.
00:15:54Okay.
00:15:54Okay.
00:15:54Okay.
00:16:17Look, I rushed this job.
00:16:21And I've been standing here
00:16:22for five minutes
00:16:23pushing this stupid bell.
00:16:24Okay, so the bell isn't working.
00:16:26So my time's important, too.
00:16:28Relax.
00:16:28Come on in.
00:16:29They'll get your dough for you.
00:16:30I don't pay you to bring me problems, Herbie.
00:16:41I'm just telling you
00:16:42what Marie tells me, Chief.
00:16:43She plays it like
00:16:44she's got her own dice.
00:16:46Save it.
00:16:47What is it, Romano?
00:16:48Repair on the radio, Mr. Romston.
00:16:49$20.
00:16:50Pay him, Tony.
00:16:52Oh, Romano.
00:16:53Well, that electrician
00:16:54is still here.
00:16:55Have him find out
00:16:56why the front doorbell
00:16:56won't work.
00:16:57Well, he's not exactly
00:16:58an electrician, boss,
00:16:59but I'll see what I can do about it.
00:17:09Look, Chief,
00:17:10I offered Marie Blanche a deal.
00:17:12I didn't send you
00:17:13to make a deal, Herbie.
00:17:14I sent you with orders.
00:17:17That's what I'm trying to tell you.
00:17:18I don't know what her connections are,
00:17:20but she don't take orders.
00:17:22She figures on working this town
00:17:23she'll take orders
00:17:24the same as everyone else does.
00:17:27I don't know.
00:17:33Sometimes it works,
00:17:34sometimes it don't.
00:17:35Must be a short somewhere.
00:17:37I'd like to look at the wires
00:17:38under the house.
00:17:39Right over here.
00:17:47I'll get my jacket.
00:17:57Let's not kid ourselves, Chief.
00:18:14Marie's a smart dame.
00:18:16It's a cinch the cops
00:18:17can't finger her.
00:18:18And every one of her girls
00:18:19that they picked up
00:18:19act like they never heard of her.
00:18:21She says she don't need us.
00:18:22She's got a good deal.
00:18:23You don't have to tell me.
00:18:27I know she's got a good deal.
00:18:29That's why I'm taking it over.
00:18:31It's not the way she figures it.
00:18:33That's the way I figure it.
00:18:34Where's Nick?
00:18:36No, I gave him the word.
00:18:37He shouldn't be here any minute.
00:18:38Yeah, he went to see a guy
00:18:39that opened a book in Burbank.
00:18:41The dope thinks
00:18:41he can run it by himself.
00:18:43Same as Marie.
00:19:11Is Rumsden around, Romano?
00:19:17Yeah, they're all around
00:19:18and back on the patio.
00:19:19Well, what's so important
00:19:46about a doorbell
00:19:47that doesn't work?
00:19:49Maybe I'd better explain it
00:19:50in private, Mr. Rumsden.
00:19:52Well, speak up.
00:19:53These are my friends.
00:19:55Know what a bug is, mister?
00:19:58A what?
00:19:59A bug.
00:20:00A hidden microphone.
00:20:02There's one in your house.
00:20:05Well, who'd want to listen in
00:20:07on anything I had to say?
00:20:09Did you pull it out?
00:20:12Gotta find it first.
00:20:13Anyway, I thought you might like
00:20:15to know who put it in.
00:20:15Oh, you could do that, huh?
00:20:19Easy.
00:20:20A lot easier than some
00:20:21of the projects we worked
00:20:22on during the war.
00:20:23We?
00:20:24Who's we?
00:20:26I was a captain
00:20:26in communications.
00:20:28That is, until I was graduated
00:20:29to fixing doorbells.
00:20:31Uh, what would you need?
00:20:34I'd get all the parts
00:20:35at the office.
00:20:36Uh-huh.
00:20:38Go with him, Herbie.
00:20:41There you are, Captain.
00:20:43Oh, I can't change
00:20:44a hundred, Mr. Rumsden.
00:20:46They about to ask you
00:20:47for change.
00:20:53Sounds like a smart kid.
00:20:54You're a stupid idiot.
00:21:01Nothing to bug the house
00:21:02like that.
00:21:07You better check your house,
00:21:08Nick.
00:21:09All our places.
00:21:10You know, that kid
00:21:11could come in handy.
00:21:13He knows what he's talking about.
00:21:15You know, I asked you
00:21:16over here today.
00:21:17Yeah?
00:21:18What do you want to do about it?
00:21:19Put her out of business.
00:21:22If it keeps,
00:21:24sit down.
00:21:24We'll talk about it.
00:21:49What do you want to do about it?
00:21:50What do you want to do about it?
00:21:51What do you want to do about it?
00:21:52What do you want to do about it?
00:21:53What do you want to do about it?
00:21:54What do you want to do about it?
00:21:55What do you want to do about it?
00:21:56What do you want to do about it?
00:21:57What do you want to do about it?
00:21:58What do you want to do about it?
00:21:59What do you want to do about it?
00:22:00What do you want to do about it?
00:22:01What do you want to do about it?
00:22:02What do you want to do about it?
00:22:03What do you want to do about it?
00:22:04What do you want to do about it?
00:22:05What do you want to do about it?
00:22:06What do you want to do about it?
00:22:07What do you want to do about it?
00:22:08What do you want to do about it?
00:22:09PHONE RINGS
00:22:39That's all I can tell you, Alice. I just can't make dinner.
00:22:49Is anything wrong?
00:22:50Of course not.
00:22:52But, darling, you're acting so strangely.
00:22:54Alice, I'm busy. I've got a job to do. A good one.
00:23:00All right, Jim.
00:23:04Good night, honey.
00:23:05Good night, Alice.
00:23:09Good night.
00:23:34I hope he's right. That'll drown out anything we might say.
00:23:36I hope he's right. That's the only bug they planted.
00:23:41You got to see this to really believe it, Mr. Rumson.
00:23:47Hold the dessert, Romano.
00:23:50All right, Herbie. Let's go see.
00:24:06They use something like a mind detector to trace the wire.
00:24:12It goes to the room over the garage next door.
00:24:16Well, it's nice to know who your good neighbors are.
00:24:29The radio did the trick.
00:24:31They're beefing. They can't hear a word.
00:24:34Who's they?
00:24:36The police.
00:24:50You sure that's the only bug in my house?
00:24:53I've covered every inch of it.
00:24:55I'd like to talk to you.
00:24:57Come on in and have a drink.
00:24:59I don't, uh, like to drink on an empty stomach.
00:25:02Come on.
00:25:06Come on.
00:25:10If you'll let me pull that bug out of the wood box, you can turn the radio off.
00:25:14Tell me something, boss.
00:25:16Could you develop equipment to listen in on a telephone?
00:25:19That is, record a conversation without the owner knowing anything about it?
00:25:24Wire tapping is illegal, Mr. Rumson.
00:25:27I know the law. I practice it. Just answer the question.
00:25:30I could put the equipment together.
00:25:33Mm-hmm.
00:25:35I see.
00:25:39Well, now, what I have in mind is a very worthy cause.
00:25:44We're gonna help the police department.
00:25:45Even the police aren't allowed to tap private wires.
00:25:48That's why we're gonna do it for them.
00:25:52Here's 500.
00:25:54There'll be another five. You do a good job.
00:26:00Well, I... I guess if it's for the police, I...
00:26:04It'll be all right.
00:26:06How soon could you get your equipment together?
00:26:10Well, I have to get the parts. A couple of days.
00:26:13Mm-hmm.
00:26:15Go with them, Herbie.
00:26:16Well, let's go, chum.
00:26:32What's the game, Charlie?
00:26:34I think Marie is practically out of business.
00:26:46Oh, Jim, I've been trying to find you for two days.
00:27:08I told you over the phone I'd be busy, Alice.
00:27:11Busy with what?
00:27:12Now, will you stop worrying?
00:27:13what? Now, will you stop worrying? I always worry about you, honey. I'm working on something. Can't
00:27:19you tell me about it? Only that it'll bring us enough money to get married. I'll call you later,
00:27:23Alice. When? You heard him. He'll call you. Come on. Wait a minute. Please, Jim. It's all right.
00:27:29Call me when you can.
00:27:30Don't ever try that again, Herbie. Rumson's working. Wait a minute. Look, chum. Rumson is paying for that minute and all the rest of your time. Now get your equipment together. We're late.
00:28:00Yes? It'll be tonight, Chief. We're on our way to Marie's apartment house now. Right.
00:28:30Now, Nick, is your lawyer giving to me straight? Have you connected in any way with Marie Blanche? You know I don't fool around with that kind of stuff. It's a good thing you don't. Why, did Marie get herself in a beef with the cops? Why, no, they don't even know she's operating out of 211 Roscoe Place. What's all the excitement? I got a tip. Someone's tapping her telephone.
00:28:59Oh, that someone could buy a mess of trouble if the cops knew. Oh, they'd love him if he came up with enough evidence to help him indict Marie.
00:29:29You're getting anything? You better be getting plenty, Buster. Tapping private wires is a serious offense. I'll disconnect.
00:29:43Here, I'll take that. Can you record this?
00:29:52Who gave you this number?
00:29:58Why, uh, Mr. Fielding, our sales manager.
00:30:01Oh, yes. Well, we have some very nice books. The heroine in one is especially attractive. A brunette, about five foot three.
00:30:11How about ten o'clock at the corner of Sunset and La Brea? There'll be a picture on the front cover. A girl in a mink coat.
00:30:20That'll be fine. Goodbye.
00:30:24Goodbye.
00:30:42That's the number she's calling.
00:30:43Okay, David. Corner of Sunset and La Brea at ten o'clock. A girl and a traveling salesman. I'll take care of Marie.
00:30:52What's your name?
00:30:53Boss. Jim Boss.
00:30:55Good work, Boss.
00:30:56Good work, Pastor.
00:31:06Good work, sir.
00:31:13Good work.
00:31:22Good work, too.
00:31:23THE END
00:31:53THE END
00:32:23How do you like it?
00:32:25Oh, it's beautiful, Jim.
00:32:27And the down payment left us a little short on furniture, but, uh, I hope I didn't do wrong starting us off with an empty barn like this.
00:32:36Empty?
00:32:37Why, darling, this house is so full of love that I don't know where we'd fit the furniture if we had it.
00:32:42Oh, we'll fit it in all right. This living room will be ankle-deep in carpet, wall-to-wall.
00:32:48And, uh, let's see. That's where your sofa will be.
00:32:51A seven-foot one.
00:32:52And there's your favorite chair next to the fire.
00:32:58And right opposite is yours, where I can sit and look at you all, eh?
00:33:02Think of the money we'll save just sitting and looking at each other.
00:33:06Oh, honey, we're going places, too.
00:33:09And to nothing but the best.
00:33:12I can just see the doorman now.
00:33:14Mr. Boss's car.
00:33:16And there will be our little jalafie.
00:33:18Chauffeur-driven, of course.
00:33:20It'll be a Cadillac.
00:33:21Well, of course, Jim.
00:33:25Uh, what I mean is, honey, I just want to grab the world for you and hand it to you on a silver platter.
00:33:32You're my whole world, darling.
00:33:35You're all I really want.
00:33:37Okay, Mrs. Ross.
00:33:40Jim.
00:33:46Why didn't you tell me about the work you were doing on the...
00:33:49Marie Blanche case?
00:33:51Well, I...
00:33:54I couldn't tell anyone.
00:33:57You can tell me anything.
00:33:59I love you.
00:34:01It's a secret, Alice.
00:34:02I was working with the police.
00:34:05I know.
00:34:06But the papers made it sound so sordid.
00:34:09It got us married, didn't it?
00:34:12Can't we stay married on something nicer?
00:34:14Oh, darling, there's lots of work.
00:34:16Clean work with your kind of ability.
00:34:19All right.
00:34:19From here on in, nothing but honest, normal, routine jobs.
00:34:24Promise?
00:34:24I promise.
00:34:28Oh, no.
00:34:30Did it have to be connected tonight?
00:34:33I'll get rid of whoever it is.
00:34:34Oh, yes, Mr. Rumsden.
00:34:44Jim, I have a wedding gift for you.
00:34:47A very important assignment with a nice, fat fee.
00:34:50Oh, I certainly can use it, sir.
00:34:52What kind of a job?
00:34:57A wiretapping job?
00:34:59There's a certain politician down at City Hall that's giving a client of mine some trouble.
00:35:04Now, a good job of wiretapping, such as you did on Marie Blanche, would put this politician in a rather awkward spot.
00:35:11You want to expose him, huh?
00:35:14No, not exactly.
00:35:16Not if he's smart.
00:35:17Let's say that the kind of recorded evidence that we want would put my client in a very good bargaining position.
00:35:25Oh, no, wait a minute, Mr. Rumsden.
00:35:26And this is not the kind of a job I...
00:35:29What was that?
00:35:32I said $2,000.
00:35:37I thought you'd be interested, Jim.
00:35:40I'll see you in my office tomorrow afternoon.
00:35:51Who was that on the phone?
00:35:52A vanload of furniture, honey.
00:35:56How do you like it, honey?
00:36:16It's not ours.
00:36:17It's yours.
00:36:18For putting up with me for the last three months.
00:36:21Oh, Jim, you're crazy.
00:36:23We can't afford it.
00:36:24It's a gift from Nick Castro for a favor I did for him.
00:36:28What kind of a favor could you have done for a gangster, Jim?
00:36:37Honey, I can't afford to ask my clients for references.
00:36:41But you said you were working with the police.
00:36:44I have been.
00:36:45How can you work with both police and crooks?
00:36:48Well, that pat on the back won't pay our bills.
00:36:59Who do you think paid for this furniture?
00:37:01The police department?
00:37:02This house was more of a home when it was filled with you.
00:37:10I hardly see you anymore.
00:37:12But I have to be available when I'm needed.
00:37:14To hoodlums?
00:37:16You wouldn't if you'd kept your promise to me.
00:37:19My promise?
00:37:20Not to get mixed up with anything dirty after that Marie Blanche case.
00:37:25But there's nothing dirty about Charles Rumsden.
00:37:27He's one of the biggest attorneys in Los Angeles.
00:37:28He's responsible for every piece of furniture in this house.
00:37:32But I don't want to live with furniture.
00:37:36Wait, Alice.
00:37:39You're right.
00:37:41I have neglected you.
00:37:42I just can't go on this way.
00:37:44Everywhere I go, I have to give reasons why you're not with me.
00:37:47I'm sorry.
00:37:48I've even reached the point where I make excuses for you in advance.
00:37:54We'll do anything you say.
00:37:56Tonight is yours.
00:37:58I was planning on going to the church tonight.
00:38:02Our class is having a social.
00:38:05But I've already told him you won't be with me.
00:38:09Then we'll surprise him.
00:38:10I cannot hide in God, however I may try.
00:38:33Though mountains cover me, I'll not escape his eye.
00:38:41I've wandered far and near, but still his voice I hear.
00:38:49I know that I can never hide from God.
00:38:58I cannot hide from thee, dear Lord.
00:39:07To escape thee so often I've tried.
00:39:14No rest shall I know while here below.
00:39:22Till in Christ my soul till in Christ my soul shall hide.
00:39:32How often in the past I've gone my wicked way, I knew I'd come at last to face another day.
00:39:49When for my wasted years, I'd pay in grief and tears, I knew that I could never hide from God.
00:40:07I cannot hide from thee, dear Lord.
00:40:14To escape thee so often I've tried.
00:40:16To escape thee so often I've tried.
00:40:21No rest shall I know while here below.
00:40:29Till in Christ my soul shall hide.
00:40:56Come on, honey, we'll leave it.
00:40:57What?
00:40:58What?
00:40:59We came for the meeting.
00:41:00Let's get out of here.
00:41:01Jim, you're hurting me.
00:41:02I'm sorry.
00:41:03I'll tell you later.
00:41:04Wasn't there him, boss?
00:41:05Why, yes.
00:41:06Do you know him?
00:41:07Yes.
00:41:08Very well.
00:41:09What on earth came over them?
00:41:12Why, yes.
00:41:13Do you know him?
00:41:14Yes.
00:41:15Very well.
00:41:16What on earth came over them?
00:41:19Why are we stopping here?
00:41:20There's something I want to tell you.
00:41:22Can't you tell me at home?
00:41:26You may not want to go home when I'm finished.
00:41:27But before I tell you, Alice, there's something I want you to believe.
00:41:31I love you.
00:41:32And I never wanted you hurt, especially by me.
00:41:33Jim, what is it?
00:41:34Tell me.
00:41:35Jim, what is it?
00:41:36All the time you thought I...
00:41:37I was winning medals.
00:41:38Jim, what is it?
00:41:39Jim, what is it?
00:41:40Tell me.
00:41:41All the time you thought I...
00:41:42I was winning medals.
00:41:49I was serving a prison sentence for stealing government property.
00:41:59Jim.
00:42:00All the time you thought I...
00:42:03I was winning medals.
00:42:06I was serving a prison sentence for stealing government property.
00:42:10I didn't figure it as stealing at the time, but the Army Court Marshal did.
00:42:17For taking a few measly gadgets to add to the fat salary they were already paying me.
00:42:24Are you trying to justify stealing?
00:42:27I'm just trying to explain why, Alice.
00:42:35You waited long enough to tell me this.
00:42:39What made you decide to tell me tonight?
00:42:45The Speaker Miss Wilson wanted me to meet tonight.
00:42:48It was the chaplain at the prison.
00:42:53Then you still wouldn't have told me if...
00:42:56I told you, Alice, I didn't want to hurt you.
00:42:59All those letters, those important missions.
00:43:04A part of the same lie.
00:43:07I was afraid of losing you.
00:43:10You don't lose people who love you when you tell the truth.
00:43:16I wanted to tell you before I came home, Alice.
00:43:19But I couldn't.
00:43:24Now I realize the mistake I made.
00:43:26The rest is up to you.
00:43:31Can you forgive me?
00:43:35Sure.
00:43:36Sure, I can forgive you, Jim.
00:43:41I've made excuses for you before.
00:43:43I can go on making excuses for anything you do.
00:43:47But I can't make the same excuses for our child.
00:43:53Oh, a child?
00:43:58I'm sorry I had to tell you into these conditions.
00:44:01Give me another chance, Alice.
00:44:04Please give me another chance.
00:44:05I'll do anything.
00:44:06You'll even give up all connections with Nick Castro.
00:44:09I promise.
00:44:11I don't care what you promised.
00:44:13Besides those joints I hired you to service, I'm opening up some new books.
00:44:14I need some phone extensions.
00:44:15I told you, Nick, I can't afford to get tied in with gambling.
00:44:16What do you mean you can't afford?
00:44:17Where'd you get the car, the house, the clothes, the furniture?
00:44:19Don't tell me them things ain't important.
00:44:20Sure they are, Nick.
00:44:21You've got a better offer.
00:44:22You better forget it.
00:44:23I told you why I have to quit.
00:44:24Nobody tells me nothing.
00:44:26I can't stand to see Alison happy.
00:44:27Now, look, is she gonna be any happy if you don't bring home the bacon to take care of that kid?
00:44:31You tell me why I have to quit.
00:44:32I'm sorry.
00:44:33I'm sorry.
00:44:34I'm sorry.
00:44:35I'm sorry, Nick.
00:44:36I'm sorry.
00:44:37I'm sorry.
00:44:38I'm sorry.
00:44:39I'm sorry.
00:44:40I'm sorry.
00:44:41I'm sorry, Nick.
00:44:42I'm sorry.
00:44:43I'm sorry.
00:44:44I'm sorry.
00:44:45I'm sorry.
00:44:46I'm sorry.
00:44:47I'm sorry.
00:44:48I'm sorry.
00:44:49You tell me where you can make any more dough than what you're making with me.
00:44:52All right, Nick.
00:44:54Just one thing.
00:44:55Please don't call the house.
00:44:57I don't want Alice to find out.
00:44:59Okay.
00:45:00Only you just be where I can find you in a hurry.
00:45:03Hey.
00:45:04What's going on at my joint?
00:45:1934T.
00:45:20Request ambulance regarding shooting at 161 North Crescent Heights Drive.
00:45:26Over.
00:45:27Hey, what gives?
00:45:30It's a cinch we ain't gonna find out from little Joe Baggett.
00:45:34There's rumors you and him had a falling out, Nick.
00:45:37I don't know what you're talking about.
00:45:38He makes book.
00:45:39I make clothes.
00:45:40These guys play for keeps.
00:45:41Looks like the only way out is feet first.
00:45:45Hello.
00:45:46This is the city hospital.
00:45:47I'd like to speak to Mr. Boss, please.
00:45:52Well, do you know where I could find him?
00:46:17I tried both those numbers.
00:46:19Well, thank you very much.
00:46:21Thank you very much.
00:46:23And I'll be gathered.
00:46:24Thank you very much, Mr. Boss.
00:46:25I'll take you very much.
00:46:26You're welcome.
00:46:27Your father is here.
00:46:28Thank you very much.
00:46:29Our father is beautiful.
00:46:30Thank you very much.
00:46:31Thank you very much, Lieutenant.
00:46:32Isn't that a flash in here, Mr. Boss?
00:46:33He'll be on his way, Mrs. Voss.
00:46:35I hope so.
00:46:37Don't worry.
00:46:38New fathers are too excited to miss events like this.
00:46:54You know, little Joe had a lot of friends crying at his funeral.
00:46:57Can I count on this bale of wire?
00:46:59If anyone enters your property, you'll know it.
00:47:03There's someone at the front door.
00:47:05Al, see who it is.
00:47:11Me, Charlie Rumston.
00:47:16Evening, Al.
00:47:17They're in the den, Mr. Rumston.
00:47:23Well, you're just in time, Charlie.
00:47:25Oh, time for what?
00:47:26To help christen my radar screen.
00:47:28You know, this guy's got me guarded closer than Fort Knox.
00:47:30Well, so that's it. How does it work?
00:47:32You'll see in a minute. I sent some of the boys out to test it.
00:47:34You set off that alarm, Mr. Rumston, when you came through the front gates.
00:47:38Huh?
00:47:39Now, that's Herbie coming over the west wall.
00:47:42What do you know about that?
00:47:44Oh, it's really very simple.
00:47:46Oh, sure.
00:47:47It's simple, all right, if you happen to be a genius.
00:47:50Now, that's Tony coming over the east wall.
00:47:53You see, Mr. Rumston, wherever the circuit is broken, these lights register the exact position of the intruder.
00:47:59Let's have a drink on that, huh?
00:48:01All right, good idea.
00:48:03I'll check on her husband once more.
00:48:13Charlie?
00:48:17Jim, that radar screen really works, huh, Nick?
00:48:21Like a chob, Herbie.
00:48:22Well, here's to Jim's brainchild.
00:48:28The hospital.
00:48:30I forgot Alice.
00:48:34You've been monkeying with that thing?

00:52:54Why tomorrow?
00:52:56A couple of minutes ahead of the race wire is all you need.
00:52:59Hey, Voss.
00:53:01You're a whiz, kid.
00:53:02Can't you figure a way of holding back the wire that long?
00:53:05You know, you could build your own private hospital for your next kid.
00:53:08Now, that's something you can work on in your spare time.
00:53:11You're a whiz, kid.

01:00:52My end will work.
01:00:55What about yours?
01:00:57Why didn't you go to Nick?
01:00:59You know why.

01:01:02I don't want any part of him.
01:01:03Except his money, huh?
01:01:05Not even his money.
01:01:07There are plenty of other books we can work this on.
01:01:09That's small-time stuff.
01:01:10With a deal like this, we could make millions.
01:01:13Let's take what we can without taking too many chances, huh?
01:01:16Why did you pick me for this job, Vaz?
01:01:18Because I think you're as anxious to break clear of Nick as I am.
01:01:21And because I think you're tired of being a punching bag for him
01:01:23every time something goes sour.
01:01:26Okay, Pally.
01:01:28You catch yourself a deal.
01:01:51Nobody can say you travel light.

01:05:12The End
01:05:42Too bad the tracks aren't open Sundays, Jim.
01:05:59Tony, we've earned ourselves a vacation.
01:06:02Well, what do you call this?
01:06:03Best vacation I ever had.
01:06:05Yeah, but we've been hitting them pretty hard for the last two months.
01:06:08And without a let-up,
01:06:10we've been lay low for a while.
01:06:12Besides, I promised Alice a vacation.
01:06:15Well, wait a minute, Jim.
01:06:15There's one guy I got a little account to square with.
01:06:18One more, huh?
01:06:21All right, Tony. One more.
01:06:22Good.
01:06:26You sure got in under the wire on that race, buddy.
01:06:29That's the way it goes, Pally.
01:06:30What made you bet that nag? 20 to 1.
01:06:32I got a system.
01:06:36He's got a system.
01:06:37He's got a system.
01:06:38I like this.
01:06:50Jim!
01:06:51You pressed your luck when you tried it on me, boss.
01:07:21Okay, that's enough for a while.
01:07:28I didn't know it was your book, Nick.
01:07:33I told Tony to lay off.
01:07:36He's included me in that warning, boss.
01:07:39That was my $20,000 the cops found in me's pocket.
01:07:43Why, you cheap two-bit bell fixer.
01:07:47After taking out of that burlap you were wearing,
01:07:49putting you into $200 suits.
01:07:51Staked you to everything you owned.
01:07:53Kept you from being dumped in the river
01:07:55when you couldn't make good that three grand bet.
01:07:57Paid you a hospital bill.
01:07:59Okay, okay, I'll pay it all back to you.
01:08:02You can make book on that.
01:08:04Whatever made you think you could walk out on us.
01:08:08Or maybe you don't know why you're still alive.
01:08:11It ain't that we love you, boss.
01:08:13No more than we love Tony.
01:08:15It just so happens we need you.
01:08:17And you better make sure we keep needing you.
01:08:20What do you want?
01:08:22That gadget of yours.
01:08:24Who else knows about it?
01:08:26No one.
01:08:28Not even my wife.
01:08:30We'll keep it that way, boss.
01:08:32You're gonna make a little trip.
01:08:34A trip?
01:08:36What do you want?
01:08:38I'll do anything.
01:08:40I'll work with you.
01:08:42You'll work for me, not with me.
01:08:45And maybe if you follow orders,
01:08:47you might come back from St. Louis in one piece.
01:08:50St. Louis?
01:08:52You and Tony scratched up a little chicken feed.
01:08:55We're gonna set up shop in St. Louis
01:08:58and take every bookie west of there.
01:09:00But you'll be bucking the whole syndicate.
01:09:02When we're through, I'll be the syndicate.
01:09:07What if they find out?
01:09:09You better pray that they don't.
01:09:13When do we leave?
01:09:15Tomorrow night.
01:09:16I can't leave tomorrow night.
01:09:18I said tomorrow night.
01:09:20Be here at 10 o'clock.
01:09:22And that means 10 o'clock sharp.
01:09:25What?
01:09:42Jim, what happened to you?
01:09:44I was crossing the street to my car
01:09:46and some crazy driver bumped me.
01:09:48I'm lucky I wasn't run over.
01:09:50Oh, honey.
01:09:52I'll call a doctor.
01:09:53No, wait.
01:09:54I'm okay.
01:09:55They checked me at the emergency hospital.
01:09:57It's just a lot of scratches.
01:09:59Then I'll call Mother and tell her
01:10:00not to pick up Madeline tonight.
01:10:02No, wait.
01:10:03But, Jim, the beach isn't going to be any vacation
01:10:06for you until you feel better.
01:10:10Look, honey, I...
01:10:12A vacation will have to wait.
01:10:14Some business has come up.
01:10:16That's all right, darling.
01:10:23I understand.
01:10:25So maybe it would be better
01:10:27if your mother did pick up Madeline tonight
01:10:29and I could run you over tomorrow night.
01:10:32Why do we have to go to Mother's?
01:10:34I have to leave town.
01:10:37And I don't want you here alone.
01:10:40Leave town?
01:10:43Now, before the baby comes?
01:10:50I know what you're thinking, honey.
01:10:52Seems I'm never around when you need me the most.
01:10:54This time I can't help it.
01:10:56You couldn't help it when Madeline was born.
01:10:59I got a 10 o'clock appointment.
01:11:00I just can't put it off.
01:11:02I still don't know why I can't stay here in our own house.
01:11:07Honey, I told you I didn't want you alone.
01:11:09Everything's arranged.
01:11:10Your mother will take better care of you and Madeline than I can.
01:11:12But it's you I want with me.
01:11:15Don't make it more difficult.
01:11:18I'd give anything if I didn't have to go.
01:11:21Would you?
01:11:23Please get in the car.
01:11:32Jim, look.
01:11:42Let's go hear him.
01:11:43What?
01:11:44Please, Jim.
01:11:45You've got a couple of hours.
01:11:47But I want to see you settle before I go.
01:11:49There might not be much time.
01:11:51There may never be a better time.
01:11:54What do you mean by that?
01:11:56I can't explain it.
01:11:57I just have a feeling it's something I need.
01:12:00Something that will help me tonight when you're gone.
01:12:05All right.
01:12:07We can't stay long.
01:12:09Jesus knew that they were following him because they'd seen him do great miracles.
01:12:14But that's not enough.
01:12:16Jesus demands more than that.
01:12:18Jesus demands repentance of sin.
01:12:21Jesus demands renouncing your sins and following him.
01:12:25And one of those people that said we'd like to follow you was Nicodemus, a religious leader.
01:12:30But Jesus had said no even to Nicodemus.
01:12:33And Nicodemus came quietly to him one night and said,
01:12:36Master, I'd like to talk over this problem.
01:12:39I'd like to talk over my spiritual life.
01:12:41And Jesus turned to this religious leader and said,
01:12:45Nicodemus, except a man is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of heaven.
01:12:51Have you been born again?
01:12:52And Nicodemus was taken aback.
01:12:54Born again?
01:12:55He'd never even heard of being born again.
01:12:58Jesus said the only way to heaven is by the new birth.
01:13:01Well, what do you mean by the new birth, you say?
01:13:04Well, the Bible teaches, first of all, that you're a sinner.
01:13:07The Bible teaches that you've sinned against God.
01:13:10You've broken the laws of God.
01:13:12Every person in this tent tonight has broken the laws of Almighty God.
01:13:17What are the laws?
01:13:18The Ten Commandments.
01:13:19And the Bible says that any man that breaks the Ten Commandments is a sinner.
01:13:24And all the problems of the world tonight come from the fact that men are sinners.
01:13:29And all of your problems come from the fact that you're sinners.
01:13:33Oh, there are many people that think that they can live a life of sin and get away with it.
01:13:37You think that you can beat the game of sin.
01:13:39You think that sin pays off.
01:13:41But sin pays off in nothing except misery, heartache, disillusionment, inner tension.
01:13:49The Bible says what shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul?
01:13:54Some of you, the devil has told you, will give you a part of the world.
01:13:58You've gained a little bit of this world's goods.
01:14:00You've gained a little bit of popularity and notoriety, perhaps.
01:14:03But all of that, Jesus said, is nothing compared to losing your own soul.
01:14:09The Bible says the moment you die that your soul goes out into eternity,
01:14:13banished from the presence of God forever.
01:14:16You're a sinner tonight.
01:14:17And you need to repent of your sin and give your heart to Christ.
01:14:21You say, well, Billy, I know I'm a sinner.
01:14:24I know I've sinned against God.
01:14:26I know that I've failed God.
01:14:28I know that I've done things I shouldn't do.
01:14:31But what can I do about it?
01:14:33I can't stand anymore of this.
01:14:34Jesus said, be born again.
01:14:36You say, well, be born again.
01:14:38What do you mean by that?
01:14:39What are you afraid of?
01:14:40It means that you can actually become a part of God's life.
01:14:44You can have God's life in you.
01:14:47You can be forgiven of every sin.
01:14:49You can know that you're going to heaven.
01:14:51You can have peace and joy and rest in your heart by surrendering
01:14:56and giving your life and heart to Jesus Christ.
01:14:59You can be born again.
01:15:01Now, the moment you receive Christ as your Savior, the moment you open your heart and let Christ in,
01:15:06He comes in and makes you a new moral person.
01:15:11He just doesn't clean up the old person.
01:15:13He just doesn't whitewash the old barn.
01:15:16He makes you an entirely new creation.
01:15:19You become literally a brand new person by giving your heart and your life to Jesus Christ.
01:15:26It's an infusion of God's life into you.
01:15:30And then you say, well, Billy, how do I receive this new birth?
01:15:35How do I get it?
01:15:36Where can I find it?
01:15:38Come to Jesus Christ right now.
01:15:40Come to the foot of the cross.
01:15:42It was on the cross that He died for your sins.
01:15:45It was at the cross that God made reconciliation with man.
01:15:49And at the cross, you can find forgiveness of your sin.
01:15:53You can find peace and joy and salvation by coming to the foot of the cross.
01:15:59You say, what will it cost?
01:16:01It will cost you your sins.
01:16:03You'll have to give up your sins.
01:16:05You have to renounce them.
01:16:07I don't find a verse of scripture anywhere in the Bible where it says that you can live any kind of life you want to and be a Christian.
01:16:14You have to renounce sins.
01:16:16That's what repentance means.
01:16:17It means to turn from sins, to acknowledge your sins.
01:16:21And then, by faith, you open your heart and let Jesus Christ come in.
01:16:26By faith, you receive Him as your own personal Savior.
01:16:30And the moment you do it, He forgives every sin you've ever committed.
01:16:35You become born again.
01:16:37You become a new person, a new creation.
01:16:41And you can leave this tent tonight knowing that if you died, you would go to heaven.
01:16:46You can leave this tent tonight with all the past forgiven.
01:16:49You can leave this tent tonight walking on air with a smile on your face and joy in your heart and a spring in your step by letting Jesus Christ come into your heart.
01:17:00And I'm going to ask tonight in this great tent, all of you that will receive Christ, all of you that will renounce your sins, all of you that want to receive the new birth and be born again, I'm going to ask you in a few moments to get up out of your seat.
01:17:16And I'm going to ask you to come quietly and reverently and stand in front of this platform and say by coming, I give my life and my heart to Jesus Christ.
01:17:27As I've stood here this evening, I've felt all evening that there's a man somewhere in this audience.
01:17:33He's heard this message many times before.
01:17:36And the Spirit of God is striving mightily with him at this moment.
01:17:40And if he doesn't come to Christ now, he may never come.
01:17:44We're going to wait a moment.
01:17:46There's still time for you to come.
01:17:48You come and give your life to Christ.
01:17:59It's all right, Jim.
01:18:14Now you know everything.
01:18:30Everything I left out about my time in prison.
01:18:35There are so many things I've got to make right.
01:18:38We will, Jim.
01:18:40We?
01:18:45It's still our life, darling.
01:18:47Before I can expect you to share this part of my life with me, I want you to realize what it's going to mean.
01:18:54The price we might have to pay.
01:18:56It may mean giving up the house, the furniture, the car.
01:19:02Everything we possess.
01:19:05We'll start all over.
01:19:08Together.
01:19:09I'm trying to tell you, Alice.
01:19:11It may not be together.
01:19:16There are laws about these things.
01:19:18Laws I've broken.
01:19:20Prison.
01:19:23I've broken.
01:19:24I'm more afraid of what Rumsden and his mob might do to you.
01:19:30Oh, Jim.
01:19:32I think I'm scared.
01:19:40Did you have to phone them?
01:19:42We could have been miles away by now.
01:19:45I'm through running away, Alice.
01:19:48I've been doing that my whole life.
01:19:51I'm sure I could run away from them.
01:19:54But I can't keep on running away from myself.
01:19:59Something happened to me tonight in that tent.
01:20:02For the first time in my life, I'm willing to face the music.
01:20:07To play it straight.
01:20:08It's a wonderful, clean feeling.
01:20:23You should have left Madeline at your mother's house.
01:20:26I'm going to call the police.
01:20:27No, wait.
01:20:29This is something I have to do for myself.
01:20:39What, Jim?
01:20:41Alice, listen to me.
01:20:43Go in the bedroom and stay with the baby.
01:20:47Alice, please.
01:21:08Good thing you called, boss.
01:21:23I was beginning to think maybe you'd run out on us.
01:21:27I'm through running, Mr. Rumsden.
01:21:29All right, then.
01:21:30Come on, let's go.
01:21:32I guess you didn't understand my phone call.
01:21:35I'm not going to St. Louis.
01:21:36I'm not going anywhere with you.
01:21:39We're late, boss.
01:21:41I'm in no mood for jokes.
01:21:43I was never more serious in my life.
01:21:47I don't know how good I'll be at explaining this.
01:21:50It's all so new.
01:21:52But you see, tonight I...
01:21:54I heard a minister preach a sermon.
01:21:56What is this?
01:21:57What are you giving us?
01:21:59Don't be frightened, darling.
01:22:01Everything's going to be all right.
01:22:06You expect us to swallow that slop?
01:22:09Okay.
01:22:11So the preacher slips you a few dollars to make a headline.
01:22:14Wiretap or Voss hit Sawdust Trail.
01:22:17All right, it gets a few more suckers down on their knees in his tent tomorrow night.
01:22:21But tonight you and I have got plane tickets for St. Louis.
01:22:23You have.
01:22:25Not me.
01:22:27Look, I don't know this Graham character.
01:22:29What kind of magic he uses.
01:22:30But I do know it's not healthy for you.
01:22:33I'm trying to make you understand.
01:22:35Do you think we'd let you walk out on us?
01:22:38I've already walked out.
01:22:40And if there's a price to pay, I'm going to have to pay it.
01:22:44You're not talking cents.
01:22:46They'll throw the book at you.
01:22:47You'll spend the rest of your life in jail.
01:22:49If those bookies you clipped don't get you first,
01:22:52maybe you should remember what happened to Tony.
01:22:54We're giving you a choice, Voss.
01:22:57The same trip Tony took.
01:22:59Or the one you can still make with me.
01:23:02The Jim Voss you gave that choice to is already dead.
01:23:06He died tonight in the tent.
01:23:09Somebody else was born.
01:23:12A guy no longer interested in the fast buck.
01:23:15The shady deal.
01:23:17It's all tied up with a lot of words like...
01:23:20repentance.
01:23:22Forgiveness.
01:23:26Is that the way you want it, Voss?
01:23:29It's not what I want.
01:23:31It's what I must do.
01:23:34It's not just you, Rumsden.
01:23:36Or you, Nick, that I have to straighten myself out with.
01:23:40You're at the bottom of a long list of people I have to square myself with.
01:23:44I'll straighten you out right now, you.
01:23:46Leave him alone.
01:23:48You gonna let him get away with this?
01:23:50He's not getting away with anything.
01:23:51Not here.
01:24:01Come on.
01:24:03I'm gonna take care of this now, Charlie.
01:24:05Nick, I said, come on!
01:24:06I said, come on!
01:24:07I said, come on, and you can go in.
01:24:08Come on.
01:24:10I said, come on.
01:24:12Come on, Charlie.
01:24:14I said, come on!
01:24:16Come on!
01:24:18No, he was just a James.
01:24:20I was just a kid.
01:24:24Who every once in a while, you're just a kid.
01:24:25There was a man in the tent tonight who showed me a verse in the Bible from the book of Proverbs.
01:24:45When a man's ways please the Lord, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with them.
