00:00How a Boy Went Fishing
00:05On the morning of Decoration Day, Harry declined attending the celebration with the family,
00:12saying that he preferred to go fishing. Lots of other fellows were going.
00:17So, Harry gathered up his fishing outfit, his gun, dinner pail, matches,
00:23and an umbrella for sultry sun or summer shower,
00:26and set them outside the door while he hunted for a few angleworms.
00:32The parents bade him goodbye to take care of himself and not go too far up the canyon,
00:38for the walk home after pleasure is over is always a longer one than that of going.
00:43When the parents and two youngest ones returned from the celebration that afternoon,
00:48the good housekeeper had a nice, plain dinner ready.
00:51The two children left in her care were asleep after their dinner,
00:54and the house seemed peaceful and cool after the long ride and exercises in the open air.
01:01Just before lamplight, Harry came home, all his trim outfit looking very dusty and out of order.
01:09The umbrella was broken, the dinner pail dented and cover lost,
01:13and his clothing both torn and dirty.
01:16But Harry proudly showed a trout that he had brought home for mother's own supper
01:21no one else must ask for a taste, or even accept a proffered portion,
01:26or cast admiring glances that way.
01:30The trout was about five inches long and had a peculiar, ragged appearance.
01:35You see, explained Harry, the line got tangled after he swallowed the bait,
01:41and I shot him for fear he'd get away.
01:44There was no danger of that, said Harry's father.
01:48The proud son now expressed a determination to,
01:52make a fire and cook the trout.
01:55Oh, Harry, don't make a fire tonight and heat the house.
01:58The trout will do for breakfast.
02:00Mother, the housekeeper might eat it herself.
02:03Little bites.
02:05Trout is tempting.
02:06No, Harry.
02:07She wouldn't do that.
02:09Well then, mother, I'll dig a hole in the garden
02:12and bury the fish to keep it cool all night.
02:15Very well, said she.
02:17And Harry spent half an hour in the garden,
02:20then came in satisfied with the labors of the day.
02:24Throwing himself upon the lounge,
02:26he recounted the rambles he had made.
02:28How encumbered he had been with so much luggage,
02:33the loss of his ramrod,
02:35then the theft of his dinner by a hungry dog,
02:37and finally how blistered his feet were with so much walking.
02:43But he had enjoyed himself.
02:45Suddenly he asked,
02:47Do you suppose cats or dogs could burrow under that box?
02:51He rose, looked out of the window,
02:54and spied a neighbor's dog sniffing at the fresh earth.
02:57That roused him thoroughly,
02:59and he forgot that he was tired.
03:02The dog was chased for a block away.
03:04The trout was dug up.
03:06The protecting wrappers of paper, cloth, and leaves were removed.
03:10A hot fire kindled,
03:12and the trout put into the oven.
03:14Baked trout, mother,
03:16is a delicacy enjoyed by epicures.
03:18Thank you, Harry.
03:21But I'm afraid I can't eat it tonight.
03:24Yes, you can.
03:26I want you to know what a real fresh brook trout tastes like.
03:30I'll practice on my flute while it bakes,
03:33and call you when it is done.
03:35You go walk in the garden.
03:36She had not the heart to refuse his pleading smile,
03:41and, glad also to get out of the warm kitchen,
03:44she strayed into the front yard,
03:46and oh, what a sight met her gaze.
03:50Geraniums, verbenas,
03:52and over there the strawberry bed,
03:54turned upside down.
03:56Holes and mounds of earth,
03:59and lying crossways of a pansy bed,
04:01a hoe and long-handled shovel.
04:03What does it mean?
04:06She asked the housekeeper,
04:08who was just returning from an errand uptown.
04:11He said it was searching for angleworms, ma'am.
04:15Harry's mother re-entered the house
04:16after a serious conflict with self,
04:19whether to scold or not to scold,
04:22and there was he upon the lounge fast asleep
04:24after the weariness of the day.
04:27She went to the oven.
04:28The trout was done like a chip.
04:31When Harry was awakened for bedtime,
04:34he said,
04:35Mother, I enjoyed your having that trout
04:37more than though I had eaten it myself.
04:40I know it, my son,
04:41and now won't you eat some raspberry pie
04:44and sweet milk,
04:45for I am sure you must be faint?
04:47Faint?
04:48I'm starved.
04:50Mother, I couldn't love you more
04:51if you were an angel.
04:53Harry concluded this declaration
04:56with a rapturous hug
04:57and turned with a boy's own appetite
04:59to his tempting meal.
