00:00I'm signing an executive order today that will launch the Protecting Chicago
00:11initiative. This is a project that builds on the months of preparation that we have
00:16done that has led up to this very moment. Protecting Chicago will
00:22ensure that every Chicagoan knows their rights, that every single family is
00:27prepared, and every part of city government is directed to protect the
00:31people of Chicago from federal action.
00:51This order affirms that the Chicago Police Department will not collaborate with
00:56military personnel on police patrols or civil immigration enforcement. We will
01:02not have our police officers who are working hard every single day to drive
01:08down crime deputized to do traffic stops and checkpoints for the president.
01:13We have received credible reports that we have days, not weeks, before our city sees some
01:26type of militarized activity by the federal government. It is unclear at this time what
01:33that will look like exactly. We may see militarized immigration enforcement. We may also see National
01:39Guard troops. We may even see active duty military and armed vehicles in our streets. We have not called
01:49for this. Our people have not asked for this. But nevertheless, we find ourselves having to respond to this.
01:59We will protect our Constitution. We will protect our city. And we will protect our people.
02:16We do not want to see tanks in our streets. We do not want to see families ripped apart. We do not want
02:23grandmothers thrown into the back of unmarked bands. We do not want to see homeless Chicagoans harassed or
02:31disappeared by federal agents.
02:39And so this executive order makes it emphatically clear that this president is not going to come in
02:45and deputize our police department. Thank you all very much.
