00:10on drug carteles and locks up
00:12tens of thousands of gang members
00:14it faces an exploding problem in its prisons.
00:18The nation's penitentiaries are now suffering
00:20from record overcrowding and have been
00:22hit by a wave of riots,
00:24mass breakouts and corruption scandals.
00:26Time went to investigate what was happening
00:30behind the barbed wire fences and guard towers.
00:34Amid the scandals, the Mexican government
00:36is wary about letting film crews into prisons.
00:40But we were given some limited access
00:42to shoot inside Mexico City's Eastern Penitentiary
00:44the largest in all of Latin America.
00:50So we're here on the western wing of the prison.
00:52You can start seeing the numbers of people
00:54and the overcrowding here
00:56which is quite considerable
00:58because this prison was built for 4,700 prisoners
01:00but now has more than 12,000 inmates.
01:04Built 33 years ago, this prison has all types of inmates
01:08from small-time thieves to murderers and cartel hitmen.
01:12All are mixed together.
01:14Overcrowding in some Mexican prisons has triggered bloody riots
01:18that have even included the use of automatic rifles and grenades.
01:24I asked inmate Gonzalo what it is like
01:26to survive in this kind of environment.
01:28There have been cases of prisoners using cell phones
01:32smuggled into the jail to commit extortions on the public outside.
01:38Deputy warden Jose Luis Flores tells me they are installing a new system to block cell phone signals.
01:48The same penal is the reflejo of a society as a small society.
