If you like a particular plant and want to ensure you have more of them for next year then propagation by cutting is the easiest way to go, and best of it costs nothing.
Not every plant can be propagated successfully but there are some annuals, biennials and a lot of perennials which should root easily enough.
There are various ways of propagating new plants, either through seed sowing, root division or taking cuttings. The latter is the least labour intensive and usually nets the quickest results.

00:00So today I'm going to try and get some cuttings out of some plants, here's one example of rosemary.
00:24Beautiful smell grown from seed, this is from last year.
00:30See it's getting quite big, it could probably do with being on the ground now.
00:34But I want to take some cuttings from this, a few of these and then some other things as well, possibly lavender.
00:42A little lavender plant isn't that big yet, it's in the ground.
00:45I'm going to look and see if there's anything else we can try and propagate for free plants.
00:49So first up what I'm doing here is pre-soaking some little pots with some compost on them.
00:57This is fine compost here, give the roots a chance to go down.
01:03Then I get established, let the cuttings take.
01:08I'm just bottom watering a tray of seedlings here.
01:12So that's the first step.
01:17So this is the rosemary I showed you there.
01:23This is a Mediterranean herb.
01:25So what you need here is some cutter, some iron cutter.
01:29You could use scissors if you haven't had any.
01:31And what we're going to do is take it right down to about right there.
01:37Just above the leaf, the joint then.
01:42And then with this I'm going to peel off the bottom foliage.
01:52Because what you don't want is the plant to lose too much water through its leaves.
01:58So you don't waste the energy on that.
02:01So you can get quite good all of this later then.
02:28And that's it now.
02:30So all we're going to do then is just pop it in the side.
02:35I'll take a few of these because some might not tick.
02:38Then I'll do a few round the side.
02:45That way it keeps them separate and stops a whole pile of cutlings in the middle.
02:50But tangled roots if they'll take.
02:53So I'm going to look here now at the printer bed and see what there is available for cutting.
03:01Now the first things I see here are the rosemary.
03:06Or sorry, the lavender.
03:08Down here there's not a lot of, this is quite a young lavender.
03:12So there's not a lot of roots on it.
03:15But a few wee pieces are going to be there we can cut.
03:19And you don't want the hard wood you want the soft wood.
03:22At this time of year.
03:24So we'll maybe tick.
03:27Well there has been in flour.
03:29So we're not going to tick too many from it.
03:32But um.
03:36I'm really hoping this survives and thrives on the ground a few months ago.
03:44And.
03:45And then with a flour you want to cut the flour off.
03:50So.
03:51See here there's not many leaves on it.
03:54So I'm going to cut this right down.
03:56To where the flour starts.
03:59So.
04:00I'm going to shut off my camera.
04:02And then.
04:03Peel off these bottom leaves.
04:05And those little.
04:06Little joints where the.
04:07The.
04:08The.
04:09The.
04:10The.
04:11The.
04:12The.
04:13The.
04:14The.
04:15Square.
04:16Can become.
04:17Roots.
04:18If it ticks.
04:19And again.
04:20All three of these stems have a.
04:22Flour on them.
04:23So I'm just going to bring that right down.
04:26Just like there.
04:27Oh.
04:28That's not right.
04:29And again.
04:30Just.
04:31Pulling the leaves.
04:32The bottom leaves off.
04:33As long as you have some leaves on there.
04:34So that.
04:35The plant can feed itself.
04:36Through the leaves.
04:37And again.
04:38Just.
04:39Pulling the leaves.
04:40The bottom leaves off.
04:41As long as you have some leaves on there.
04:43So that.
04:44The plant can feed itself.
04:45Through the leaves.
04:46Through the leaves.
04:58So we'll go now and see if there's anything else.
05:00So that we can.
05:01Try to cut down.
05:03Um.
05:12Okay.
05:16Cutting here.
05:17So.
05:18I'm going to see.
05:19The scabia is cutting.
05:20I'm only going to try one of these.
05:21So.
05:22And again.
05:23Just putting the bottom leaves off.
05:24And there's a flower bud developing on this.
05:25So we want to get rid of that.
05:26So we'll take that.
05:27Down there.
05:28Follow it down.
05:29Snub it.
05:30And there.
05:31And there we have.
05:32Just three leaves on it.
05:33And then.
05:34Just.
05:35That one.
05:36I'm just doing one.
05:37Because they're quite.
05:38Big plants.
05:39So hopefully that'll tick.
05:40And then.
05:41We'll go back here.
05:42I did see.
05:43There's a few geraniums here.
05:44And a gem.
05:45Which I'll maybe want to try.
05:46So.
05:47This is a gem.
05:48Which hasn't flowered yet.
05:49Um.
05:50But what I'm going to do.
05:51Is just.
05:52Have a go.
05:53I'll just reposition the camera here.
05:54This is a peach collared gem.
05:55And.
05:56It's really getting established.
05:57It's only in.
05:58A few months.
05:59So.
06:00It's really getting established.
06:01It's only in.
06:02A few months.
06:03So.
06:04And then.
06:05We'll go back here.
06:06And then.
06:07We'll go back here.
06:08I did see.
06:09There's a few geraniums here.
06:10And a gem.
06:11Which I'll maybe want to try.
06:12So.
06:13This is a gem.
06:14Which hasn't flowered yet.
06:15Um.
06:16But what I'm going to do.
06:17Is just.
06:18Have a go.
06:19I'll just reposition the camera here.
06:20This is a peach collared gem.
06:22And.
06:23It's really getting established.
06:24And.
06:25But there's a.
06:26A nice.
06:27Half a looking stem.
06:28And then.
06:29Over here.
06:30We have.
06:31A.
06:32Potentilla.
06:33As well.
06:34Which has had these lovely little peach flowers as well.
06:35So.
06:36A lot of buds coming on it there.
06:37And I'll just take.
06:38A couple of cuttings from this too.
06:39And from the middle here.

07:57but it's worth trying for free plants and there's one more actually while we're here
08:03that I want to have a go at which is this one here, this is Purple Dome in Aster near England
08:12and very healthy looking here at the moment and this should be coming on the fire soon
08:21so what I'm going to do is just give you a wee overview, these are a lot of late firing plants in this patch
08:35so just do this one here
08:40and just the way we're on here, other ideas, there's a little plant below me which you can also propagate but it's just too young yet
08:55I don't want to take too much away from it
08:59is this Veronica
09:02this is an Ulster Blue it's called, a beautiful replant, small, good for the front of the border
09:08there's geraniums here as well which you could probably get
09:12they're very young so they haven't flowered this season but well next
09:16this is all new stuff
09:18and at the back there
09:20there is
09:22Achillia or Yarrow
09:24these sort of
09:28Jyrotop kind of flowers in different colours you get them
09:32and they're perennial as well
09:34they'll come back so you could take a cut them from them
09:36when they're a bit bigger
09:38they can grow quite tall
09:40but there's quite a lot of things you can do
09:44in terms of perennial plants
09:46it's worth just looking them up
09:48and so
09:50so lastly now we get our
09:54make sure the stems good and clear
09:56and clean
09:58just popping up
10:00there we go
