00:00about the root causes of this violence. And I'm going to be part of that, and the First Lady and
00:04the President are going to be part of that. But that's going to be an American conversation that
00:08we're going to have together. But before we have that conversation, if you are the praying type,
00:12I would ask you to join me in prayer. I'm just going to say a prayer for the two little kids
00:15who lost their lives yesterday. And this is a prayer we say a lot in my church,
00:19and I've always found it very meaningful. It's very short. But eternal rest grant unto them,
00:25O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of all the faithful departed
00:33through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen. Thank you all. Now with that, I will take some
00:40questions from the reporters. But again, thank you all for having me, and thank you all for
00:44indulging that moment. I think it's important for our fellow Americans to know that we're
00:48reaching our arms around them, and we love them. And you guys gave me the opportunity to do that,
00:52and so I'm grateful for it. God bless you. Questions?
00:55Kaden Perry, La Crosse Tribune, local reporter. I'm curious, a lot of investments in the steel
01:04industry in this nation, especially the signing of the Nippon and U.S. steel merger in Pennsylvania,
01:10a lot of those investments seem to be going to the Rust Belt and major corporations there. Can you
01:16point to something in your policy that will help small businesses like this and others that are
01:20maybe outside of the conventional areas for the Rust Belt?
01:24Yeah, so first of all, by ensuring that facilities like this have access to great
01:30American-made steel, we make sure they're never going to get cut off. And I talked to the CEO about
01:35this earlier. We make sure that they're always going to have the supplies necessary to do the
01:39business that they need to do. And that's a very important thing, because as we learned during the
01:43COVID pandemic, when you rely on foreign countries to make your critical supply, sometimes those
01:48foreign countries don't work. You can't depend on them. We can depend on our fellow Americans,
01:52and that's why it's so important, big corporation and small, to bring this stuff back to the United
01:57States. But you ask, what is going to help this small business? Well, first of all, the workers
02:02here, when they work an overtime shift, are not going to have to pay taxes on those overtime hours.
02:07That's going to help the workers and consequently the business right here in this facility. But also,
02:14you heard Secretary Bergen talk about this earlier. When a plant like this makes a big investment,
02:20we want to make that pay in the tax code. We don't want to penalize them for investing in American
02:25workers and American production. And the working families tax cut, you know what it does? It
02:30completely accelerates depreciation, so that when they make a big investment, when they buy a big amount,
02:35when they buy a big new facility, or they buy a big new piece of equipment, they can immediately
02:40benefit from that in the tax code. And it's such a reversal from what we've had in this country for
02:4540, 50 years, where we would penalize companies in the tax code for building and making in the United
02:50States of America. Under President Trump's leadership, we're rewarding companies in the
02:54tax code for building and making right here at home. Next question.
03:04Good afternoon. Charles Benson with TMPA 4 out of Milwaukee. As you know, the president this week
03:09signed an executive order around the National Guard. And so I'm curious if you can give us some more
03:14detail on that. Wanting the National Guard members to be available for rapid mobilization and establish a
03:21quick reaction force? My question would be, would that quick reaction force be deployed to help with
03:27day-to-day police work? And would a governor, like the governor of Wisconsin, have the option to say
03:34no to any deployment nationwide? Well, let me say a few things about this. First of all,
03:40the principle at stake here is very simple. Americans ought to feel safe on American streets.
03:45How many of us? How many of us have crossed to the other side of the street because there's a person
03:57on the street corner yelling and screaming at our kids or at our family? How many people have felt
04:02scared to walk down an American, the street of an American neighborhood in daylight or at night
04:08because those streets are considered no-go zones? How ridiculous is it that we ever let there be no-go
04:16zones on streets paid for by American taxpayers? You bought those streets. You ought to be able to
04:22enjoy them as American citizens. It's very, very simple. So that is the principle at stake here.
04:27And in Washington, D.C., let's step back a little bit. Washington, D.C. got to a point where it was
04:32having a murder more than every other day. The national capital of the most powerful nation
04:38in the history of the world had a murder every other day, carjackings, armed robberies that rival
04:44literal third-world countries. And the president of the United States said,
04:48this is America's city and enough is enough. And he deployed the National Guard to fix it.
04:52Now, that was the right decision at the time. But I don't know how anybody can look at the results
04:57over the last 14 days and say anything other than thank God Donald Trump did what he did.
05:02Because armed robberies, carjackings, murders are down between 40 to 90 percent. Even the very
05:09Democratic mayor of D.C. said yesterday that she was grateful for the additional police presence
05:15because it made it possible for people, Americans, black, white, rich, and poor, to enjoy the nation's
05:23capital again. And that's what I want. I mean, all of you, Washington, D.C. is your town.
05:28You literally built it with your tax dollars. You should be able to come and go to one of these
05:33beautiful museums or see one of these incredible monuments without fear that you're going to get
05:37mugged. And that's what we have changed in just a short period of time. And you asked the Wisconsin
05:42specific question. What the president has said is that, very simply, we want governors and mayors
05:50to ask for the help. The president of the United States is not going out there forcing this on
05:55anybody, though we do think that we have the legal right to clean up America's streets if we want to.
05:59But what the president has said is very simply is, why don't you invite us in? Is Milwaukee a super
06:04safe city right now? It's had some crime problems. It's a beautiful city. There are a lot of beautiful,
06:11incredible, hardworking people who live there. But let's be honest, Milwaukee has had some crime
06:15problems. So have other parts of our community. Chicago, I know we're not too far from Chicago,
06:20Chicago's had a lot of crime problems. Why is it that you have mayors and governors who are angrier
06:26about Donald Trump offering to help them than they are about the fact that their own residents
06:30are being carjacked and murdered in the streets? It doesn't make an ounce of sense.
06:43And the last point that I'll make about this, sir, is, and I actually, I'm going to violate the
06:48advice I gave to the president of the United States yesterday because we were having lunch yesterday
06:52and the president said, J.D., I don't know how I did it. I have actually got the Democrats to come
06:58out in defense of crime. And it's, it is crazy. If Donald Trump came out tomorrow and said he really
07:03likes puppies, you would have AOC come out and say puppies are terrible. So you have Donald Trump who
07:10has reduced murders, carjackings and armed robberies in 14 days in Washington, D.C., and now you have
07:16national Democrats coming out and saying, oh, well, we love murders and carjackings and armed
07:20robberies. Why won't Democrats just use some common sense? We're going to disagree about stuff from time
07:26to time. I'm sure Democrats want higher taxes and I want lower taxes. We may disagree about some
07:31foreign policy issues, but on this basic principle that murdering people, armed robberies, carjackings
07:38are bad. Wouldn't it be nice if the Democrats just worked a little across the aisle for once?
07:45Thank you, Mr. Vice President. Matt Smith, WISN-TV in Milwaukee. To what you just said, Milwaukee's
07:55mayor the other day said absolutely not to any talk of National Guard troops. Would the administration
08:00consider ever coming into a city like Milwaukee? Well, again, we want to be invited in Milwaukee.
08:07We want to help people. We want to help our fellow citizens. And we think that if you look at the
08:10crime rates, if you look at the murders in Milwaukee, if you look at certain neighborhoods where people
08:15are unafraid to go out even in the middle of the day, we would love to come and help the people of
08:20Milwaukee. But the president of the United States has said he wants to be asked. And that has been his
08:25consistent line from the very beginning that we have an incredible law enforcement capability in
08:31the United States. You know what's crazy about crime is most of the violent crime is committed
08:36by a very small number of people. But we talk about a violent crime problem. You know, we're not talking
08:41about thousands upon thousands of people in Milwaukee. We're talking about a few hundred people
08:45who probably commit 90% of the violent crime. We would love to come in and help lock up those violent
08:52criminals. I hope the mayor of Milwaukee gets some common sense and actually fights for her
08:56residents for a change or his residents for a change, because we would love to actually help
09:01cut down on the crime in this community. Thank you.
09:10Good afternoon, Anthony DeBruzzi, Spectrum News, Wisconsin, sticking with Milwaukee, but a little
09:15different. Yesterday, Governor Tony Evers requested a disaster declaration from President Trump after the
09:20historic flooding that we've seen in the Milwaukee area. So can Wisconsinites count on the administration
09:26for financial help through this? Yeah, so obviously, look, we want to help people. We want to help our
09:31fellow citizens. And I know that Wisconsin has suffered some serious problems. I have not talked
09:35to the president of the United States. I'm not even sure that he's aware yet that the governor has issued
09:39that disaster declaration. All right. You've been listening there to Vice President J.D. Vance earlier today
09:45there in La Crosse, Wisconsin, talking about touting the passage of the big, beautiful bill
09:52to those steel workers there before him and behind him. So in the meantime, just one more key politics
09:58headline. President Trump posing an interesting idea on true social, as he usually does. I want to read
10:05this to you. Trump saying, the Republican Party is doing really well. Millions of people have joined us
10:11in our quest to make America great again. We won every aspect of the presidential election. And based
10:16on the great success we're having, are poised to win big in the midterms. We raised far more money
10:22than the Democrats and are having a great time fixing all of the country, destroying mistakes made by the
10:27Biden administration and watching the USA heal and prosper, saying the results are incredible,
10:33a record pace, saying in that light, I'm thinking of recommending a national convention to the
10:38Republican Party just prior to the midterm, saying it's never been done before, saying stay tuned.
10:44So this is an interesting kind of novel concept. I believe it has been done before, but not for
10:49some time. The president posing the idea of having a convention for the midterm elections rather than
10:59say a national convention every four years for a general presidential election. Back out live there
11:06to the White House. We'll see if this idea takes off and whether or not the Republican Party will
11:11run with it. We'll also see how Democrats respond to it. Remember, they had their summer meeting in
11:18Minneapolis throughout the course of the week. It was foreclosed upon and abbreviated just yesterday
11:23because of the deadly shooting in Minneapolis. But some reporters covering it were also kind of
11:29musing about whether the Democrats would also do some type of convention ahead of the midterms
11:35next year. You know, here on Live Now, we are on Midterm Watch. Our eyes are focused
11:40on 2026. Let's take our final commercial break of this hour. When we come back, an update
11:45on the saga of Lisa Cook, the fired member of the Federal Board, or Federal Reserve Board of Governors,
11:53rather, well, she's suing to get her job back. We'll have an update on that very lawsuit after the break.
