Dans les années 60, Llewyn Davis tente de se faire une place sur la scène folk new-yorkaise. Pendant une semaine dans un New York enneigé, il erre dans Greenwich Village, ancien quartier bohème porté sur la contre-culture et la liberté artistique. Parmi ses rivaux figurent le couple formé par Jean et Jim Berkey, avide de stabilité. Malgré son talent, Llewyn va de déconvenues et déconvenues. Alors qu'il accumule les petits boulots et désespère de percer un jour, il croise la route du géant de la musique Bud Grossman, qui n'a que mépris pour les musiciens folk. Contre toute attente, celui-ci finit par lui proposer une audition...
