00:00A time capsule sealed and buried by Princess Diana has been opened after nearly 35 years.
00:06That capsule was buried inside of a wall at a children's hospital that Diana was the president of.
00:11It was put there to mark the laying of its foundation stone inside a trove of 90s memorabilia and pre-internet age technology.
00:19NBC News correspondent Danielle Hamamgen joins me now.
00:22So Danielle, this box apparently wasn't supposed to be open for at least 100 years.
00:26So why are we getting this early look and what was inside?
00:32Yeah, anything that has to do with Princess Diana is still so fascinating to so many people.
00:37This is a flashback to the 1990s.
00:40As you say, this is a wooden box that was sealed back in 1991 at the site of Great Ormond Street Hospital,
00:47which is a well-known hospital, not only here in the UK, but around the world.
00:51And it marked, as you say, the laying of the foundation of a new building at the time.
00:56The time capsule was meant to show future generations what life was like back in the day.
01:01And so Diana, along with two kids who won a competition, got to pick the items that were going to represent that period.
01:09On the list of items, there is a pocket television, which I guess is now just a phone,
01:15a Kylie Minogue CD, Rhythm of Love was the album, if you're old enough to remember,
01:19a solar-powered calculator, a collection of British coins, a copy of the Times of London on the day of the event.
01:27There is a little bit of damage, but the items are mostly intact.
01:32Now, you said, yes, the capsule was meant to resurface in hundreds of years.
01:38Not this year, but it was so because they had to dig it up to make way for a new cancer centre for children.
01:46Now, fun little fact here, this 1991 ceremony was similar to one that was held 121 years prior to that
01:55under a different princess of Wales.
01:57This is Princess Alexandra at the time.
02:00Similar ceremony, items were put in a box, but the box was never found again.
02:06Oh, OK, well, I guess it's better we found it early than never.
02:11But, yeah, the 90s don't seem that far ago, you know, for some of us.
02:15All right, Danielle, I'm not that far.
02:16Yeah, no, that's the kind of time capsule we were expecting.
02:19All right, Danielle, thank you so much.
02:20We thank you for watching.
