00:00A squad car still is, but not to the extent that it was, mid-morning today, where when I got here it was just nothing but solid squad cars.
00:11And then a line of ambulances, too. There were five lined up, kind of down on the other end of this block, and a few more down here.
00:18Now much of that has, that certainly has cleared out, is the need for the ambulances is no longer.
00:25Some of the SWAT vehicles have left, and some of the other squads have left or dispersed to other parts of the investigation here.
00:32But the perimeter here of this scene remains very, very extensive.
00:40We are just, you know, half a block from the side of the school here.
00:44The church is down on the other end of the block, so that's Garfield behind me, which is the north entrance to the school, and then the church is just beyond that.
00:53So you've seen a lessening of activity, is the necessity of that initial, immediate, urgent response.
01:03Emergency response has, you know, abated a couple of hours ago.
01:09But now the urgent response here now is making sure that this scene is completely cordoned off for blocks in each direction to protect the scene for the investigation now didn't exist.
01:24And we've not heard any information that it did at this point, but certainly they have that immediate concern.
01:30So around here now, again, in terms of the foot traffic, there's still, you know, a few people coming by.
01:39We just saw a kid coming by with refreshments and donuts here to pass out to first responders if they needed it.
01:47Anybody that's been stuck out here all day long and will remain here for hours to come.
01:52And just saw somebody else walking through a parking lot back here carrying some flowers, presumably to come bring to the perimeter at some point here to put those down.
02:03As people continue to process this, both on, you know, the emotional level of what occurred and then more of the other emotions here,
02:12more of the other levels of thought about what happens now in the wake of this and the response.
02:19Rob Olson with Fox 9 Minneapolis continuing to report and we will be bringing you the latest news conference coming up in just a moment.
02:32Should be happening in the next 15 minutes or so.
02:34We will be bringing that to you as soon as it does get going.
02:38We do want to take a two-minute break.
02:40We will be back with more breaking news coverage out of Minneapolis when we come back.
02:49We will be back with more breaking news coverage out of Minneapolis when we come back.
03:19We will be back with more breaking news coverage out of Minneapolis when we come back.
03:49We will be back with more breaking news coverage out of Minneapolis when we come back.
04:49Welcome back, everyone, to Live Now from Fox. I'm your host, Mike Page. Thanks again for joining us and more reaction worldwide from the tragedy in Minneapolis at the Catholic School.
05:03We are getting some more reaction, including from the Pope. This is a tweet from the VP of Communications for the Pontifical Mission Societies in the U.S.
05:15And the telegram that was written by the Pope has expressed his profound sorrow upon learning of the loss of life and injuries following the shooting that took place at Annunciation Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in the U.S.
05:30And His Holiness continues to pray for the wounded as well as the first responders, medical personnel, and clergy who are caring for them and their loved ones.
05:41At this extremely difficult time, the Holy Father imparts to the Annunciation Catholic School community, the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, and the people of the greater Twin Cities metropolitan area, His blessing as a pledge of peace, fortitude in the Lord Jesus Christ.
06:01So we will, again, be continuing to bring you some of the reaction from all over the country and, of course, around the world.
06:10We are expecting a news conference from police. This will be the latest update, the second major one from police.
06:17That is coming up should be happening around the bottom of the hour, so in about 10 minutes or so.
06:24You can see a live look right now at the White House as well.
06:28That is at half-staff right now and President Trump ordering all federal properties to do the same as well in respect to all the victims from this tragedy that took place earlier today in Minneapolis.
06:44I want to go now back out some more of the coverage. Fox 9, Minneapolis, continues.
06:49Let's see.
06:52We take these stops.
06:59Um, you okay?
07:01We're good. A friend of mine has come and gotten my kids so they could get out of this a little bit today and not see if they start school next week.
07:09So my oldest is, is really thinking about that right now and it is really sad.
07:16That's the thing for kids and parents who are going back to school this week or next week.
07:20Yeah.
07:22This is psychologically just hard to process.
07:26It's awful.
07:27It's supposed to be a week of, you know, it's so happy that the routines are back in place or if you're a kindergarten or preschool, you know, it's, it's such that next step in life, um, to, to start school and for this to be taken away and to have their first week happen like this is just unreal.
07:48You saw the police with canines going through the yards here. Did they tell you they were looking for something specific?
07:53I asked them, um, is everything safe? And they just said it's an added precaution and that made me feel safe, um, that they were doing everything that they could to walk through.
08:04I saw their dogs and some of the officers jump over fences. I just, they're incredible. And I'm really grateful for their work here.
08:14All right. And, and Rob, you also spoke with a 10 year old and, uh, that's fifth grade. That is so incredibly young.
08:21And he knows, uh, two other, at least two other children who were shot and he was shielded by one of those children who was shot and injured, uh, little Weston.
08:30And, and, and so Rob, we want to talk to you quickly too, about, um, how he's doing, but also we heard from him.
08:36He was with his parents and grandparents. How were they doing?
08:42Um, you know, they still, they were also very, uh, um, seemed very composed about this whole thing, but, uh, they expressed, um, anger really is what it was.
08:54I mean, just, just, just irritation, um, that they're even here with their fifth grader in this scenario.
09:04And that, uh, time and time again, where you hear about these, these types of situations and it, they said it just, it's frustrating that it seems like there's, there's nothing, uh, done to adequately address some of the concerns that people have.
09:20And certainly parents have, uh, with their children in school and, um, you know, and, and they said, yeah, I mean, Weston is, is very able and capable and willing to talk about his experience.
09:35And, uh, again, you know, speaking to him, remarkable at the composure, uh, that he had considering what he had to be processing about what he experienced and what he, uh, witnessed himself.
09:48Just, just remarkable.
09:51Okay, Rob Wilson, we'll come back to you in just a little bit, but thank you for, uh, that update.
09:56And, again, we'll have a, a news conference in about 10 minutes with police officials.
10:00But before that, we have an interview that, uh, we want to get to with St. Paul Police Chief Axel Henry to talk about just the, the law enforcement response.
10:08And I think he really wanted to assure citizens of St. Paul that they're doing everything they can as well to keep people safe.
10:13Let's listen in.
10:16Oh, he's alive.
10:17Oh, so, Chief Henry, thank you so much for being with us right now.
10:20Um, I can't imagine what's going through your mind because I know that you all plan and train for incidents like this.
10:26So can you just tell us from a law enforcement perspective?
10:28I know MPD rushed in there to give first aid, to rescue kids who were hiding.
10:33Um, what is going through the minds of law enforcement officials?
10:37Well, you know, first off, obviously our hearts go out to everybody that's been impacted by this, and that's literally the whole state.
10:43Uh, but obviously the direct victims, you know, are at the forefront of our minds.
10:47Um, Minneapolis did exactly what we train our officers to do as well.
10:51They press the problem.
10:52Um, I think it's way too early to say this, but my guess is that if this person did indeed, uh, die from a self-inflicted gunshot wound,
10:59it was because they either heard or saw the police arriving so quickly, and they stopped their behavior.
11:04We train to press the problem.
11:06We have great relationships with our schools here in St. Paul.
11:09Uh, we train our officers how to respond to these types of calls, as well as we scout out these locations.
11:15And it's not just the schools, it's businesses, it's any collection point that a mass people are going to show up at or be, uh, in attendance
11:22to make sure that if we have something happening, uh, there where there's a bunch of people,
11:26and they could be vulnerable to this kind of attack, that we scouted it out in advance.
11:30Our officers are familiar with the schools in their districts.
11:33Uh, they, they visit them.
11:34Our SWAT teams have trained in many, if not all of them.
11:37Uh, so they've been inside the hallways, uh, and they've been inside and found out the best ways to get in and out of those facilities.
11:42And so we're ready when these things happen.
11:45Chief, what about the scope of, of what this does to parents and how they, I think most parents could get their heads around now in this day and age that my child needs to be kept safe in school.
11:56And they have drills to keep them safe, to help keep them safe.
12:00They have officers in schools to help keep them safe.
12:03This situation now expands that concern to, in this particular case, a nearby church.
12:09Uh, but the same could be said about any school campus.
12:12It could be the ball field.
12:13It could be, uh, what do you say to parents who now have to deal with that sort of broadening of the scope of concern?
12:21You know, it's almost unimaginable at this point.
12:23You know, I mean, the children in my life are all adults now, because I'm old enough for that.
12:27But the, uh, you know, the grandkids are, are in the front of my mind right now.
12:31And when you start to think about what it is that we can do to get, to give you some assurance, I think we as a community, uh, have to come together at this point.
12:38One of the commonalities that you see in almost every one of these incidences across the country is that no one ever says we had no idea this person had a firearm.
12:46They, they, they, they know.
12:48And we as individuals have to be, uh, watching these things.
12:51I think the other thing is, is we cannot allow these people who, uh, perpetrate these acts to their, have their names and their, and their identities be celebrated in any form or fashion.
13:00Um, these are extremely cowardly and selfish actions.
13:04Uh, and I, I told someone earlier, you'll never hear me say this person's name out loud, because, again, I understand the media has a responsibility to report the news.
13:12But I think, uh, too many of these people who commit these crimes are seeking the notoriety that comes with it.
13:17And I want to make sure that, uh, we're doing everything as a community to make sure that we aren't doing anything to encourage or endorse that.
13:24Yeah.
13:24And on, sort of on that note, too, Chief Henry, there is so much chatter online and through social media.
13:31It's hard to cut through all of the negative stuff that is out there.
13:35But we talk about hear something, say something.
13:38What message would you give to the public, too, about any potential warning sign?
13:43Well, I think that's spot on.
13:44Listen, we'd rather go check something out and have it turn out to be a molehill.
13:48Um, you know, I think people want to wait too long, and they say they don't want to bring any attention to something that turned out to be wrong.
13:54I think we have to kind of push that instinct down and say, listen, in the environment we live in today, we want to make sure that we're reporting things.
14:00And if it turns out, um, that someone makes a report against me, uh, I should be more understanding of that and say, well, listen, I'm glad I have a neighbor that was that concerned.
14:08Uh, and it turns out that there was nothing or was a mistake.
14:10But we need to be, uh, more on top of that as a community, and we need to come together.
14:14I think this is, uh, you know, uh, an issue that doesn't need to be partisan in any way.
14:19And I think we all care about having safe kids and safe, uh, collection places for folks and safe events.
14:24And we can do that if we come together as a community.
14:26And that raises a different point.
14:28Uh, this happened in Minneapolis.
14:30You're in St. Paul.
14:31You're in charge of that police department.
14:33Uh, post an incident like this, something gets learned by everyone.
14:37Uh, do you coordinate with Minneapolis?
14:40I'm assuming you do to, to, uh, talk about what happened, how it happened, what can be learned from that?
14:47Yeah, we will.
14:48We'll, there'll be, obviously, we'll, we'll do an autopsy on this, uh, event as a, from a response standpoint, uh, when it's over.
14:54But the chief and I were talking as early as this morning.
14:57I was offering resources.
14:58We have folks over there right now that are working, covering calls in the city.
15:02Uh, he would do the same for us, and so would any other law enforcement agency in this area.
15:07We all gonna learn from this.
15:08You know, sometimes, uh, it, it, I don't mean to trivialize it, but it's not unlike a professional sports team.
15:13We're gonna be watching the game film on this after the fact and figure out what worked, what didn't, how can we be better prepared.
15:19And, again, prevention's the gold medal.
15:21So that's what we're always looking to do is prevent the next event.
15:24Uh, but we, we work together to figure those things out.
15:27All right.
15:27Chief Henry from St. Paul Police, thank you so much for joining us.
15:30We know these agencies in the metro work together so well.
15:33We know multiple agencies helped to respond today when this call came out around 8.30 this morning.
15:40And, uh, if you have anything else that you want to share, we hope that you'll join us later on today, too.
15:45But, uh, we know you, like so many, uh, chiefs in the area will be working together in the hours and days and months that follow.
15:54We also acknowledge, Chief, that this is hard on police officers as well.
15:57This is not easy for anybody, uh, responding to these things is, is, is hard on everyone.
16:02Uh, our police officers and first responders do it in a very professional way.
16:06So just know that people recognize that it's not easy for any of you as well.
16:11I greatly appreciate you saying that.
16:14All right.
16:15All right.
16:15Thank you, Chief Henry, and, uh, we hope to talk with you as well, um, as our continuing coverage, uh, continues in, um, throughout the day today.
16:24We are getting ready for a news conference, though, right now that will be in the city of Minneapolis.
16:28City of Minneapolis officials and, uh, police officials getting ready to brief the media at 2.30.
16:35So we know they're staging for that.
16:36They may not start right at 2.30, but we'll be carrying that live as soon as they do begin.
16:41Yeah, there's been a few hours now since the last one where, um, uh, Chief O'Hara acknowledged that they were still gathering information.
16:47Clearly, uh, the first, uh, press conference, uh, occurred within a couple hours of the shooting itself.
16:53So, um, there has been much more gathered since then.
16:56And I'm sure we will hear more about, uh, the suspect, at least we're hoping to or expecting to hear more about the suspect and what went down.
17:04We certainly, uh, want to stay on top of the conditions of those that are still in various serious situations in the hospital as well.
17:11There were 17 victims outside of the two that were tragically killed.
17:15So we, we do want to stay on top of their conditions.
17:18Some of them were still in surgery.
17:19Last time we checked, uh, at least four of them were.
17:22Uh, we do know that, um, you know, there were seven in critical condition.
17:26And as of an hour or so ago.
17:30More coverage from Minneapolis.
17:32So when we come back here on live now from Fox, we are expecting that news conference to be happening in just moments.
17:39So we'll do, we'll take a two minute break.
17:41We'll get that one out of the way and bring you more coverage from Minneapolis.
17:44When we come back.

20:03Catholic school shooting that took two young lives, injuring 17 others, and we are learning
20:12that the suspect also dead as well.
20:15New information coming right now from FBI Director Cash Patel, saying the FBI is investigating
20:21the shooting as an act of domestic terrorism and hate crime targeting Catholics.
20:26There were two fatalities, an 8-year-old and 10-year-old.
20:29In addition, 14 children and three adults were injured.
20:33The shooter has been identified as Robin Westman, a male born as Robert Westman.
20:39The FBI will continue to provide updates on our ongoing investigation with the public
20:44as we are able.
20:46So, we are learning that this news conference, about a five-minute to 10-minute delay right
20:51now.
20:51We are keeping an eye on it for you.
20:53Obviously, we'll take it as soon as it does get going.
20:56In the meantime, let's go back out to more coverage of Fox 9 Minneapolis.
21:00For so many people, we don't know of any, or we haven't been told of any threats that were
21:07made against this school, made against this church.
21:10We do know that the gunman apparently did live nearby and that his mother had retired from
21:16this school and that the gunman had undergone a name change about six years ago from Robert
21:22to Robin.
21:23It's possible that the FBI has come up with something through an online scrub or whatever
21:28that they now, FBI Director Kash Patel is investigating this, as I said a moment ago, as an act of terrorism
21:36directed as a hate crime toward Catholics or Catholicism in general.
21:41So, that is the FBI's perspective on this.
21:44We don't know exactly what directed them to move in that area, but that's certainly where
21:50where they're looking at it, and it certainly is a terrific act of violence and terrorism
21:55from its outward appearance as of this hour anyway.
21:58We know that the gunfire came from outside the church and through the windows, but we
22:03know from listening to some of the children that talked to our reporters that they did
22:07see the gunman.
22:08They knew that he was dressed in all black.
22:10Little Weston, who's just 10 years old, saying all black, and that he also, one of his friends
22:15said that he was wearing a ski mask.
22:16We don't have that part confirmed, but we do know that he was dressed in all black clothing,
22:19and that, uh, then he apparently died by suicide at the back of the church outside, um, and
22:27beyond that, we don't know any other connections, any other threats that were apparently made
22:33to any other people, uh, from this particular gunman.
22:37Catholic Church, as we said before, Archbishop of St. Paul, Minneapolis, Bernard Hebda, uh, he
22:42also thanked Pope Leo for his comments and prayers, but he said, this is Hebda again, my heart
22:46is broken as I think about students, teachers, and clergy, and parishioners, and the horror
22:51they witnessed in a church, a place where we should feel safe.
22:54And the Archbishop went on to say in a statement, uh, the staff of the Archdiocese are providing
22:59support to the parish and the school.
23:01Uh, he went on to say, we need to end gun violence, our community is rightfully, hang
23:07on one second, outraged at such horrific acts of violence perpetrated against the vulnerable
23:13and the innocent.
23:14Again, those comments coming from the Archbishop of St. Paul, Minneapolis, Bernard Hebda.
23:19And, uh, the fact that this happened during a morning mass at the beginning of the school
23:24day, too, uh, the, the children start their day and, you know, mass is filled with music,
23:29it's filled with peace and quiet and peaceful messages, and, uh, as we're hearing and seeing
23:35from a lot of parents and people in the community, it's just, uh, such a shock, and we, you hear
23:40it all the time that nobody expects this to happen because we want to feel like we live
23:44in safe communities, but, uh, that is certainly the message that, um, just, just a situation
23:51of just complete shock.
23:52I want to give you an update again on the, uh, victims, uh, other than the two young children
23:57that were killed.
23:58Again, their ages, and this is the heartbreaking part of all of this.
24:01This school is pre-K through eighth grade, and the two children that we know died right
24:05there in the church were ages eight and ten.
24:07Uh, as we've said before, there are 17 other individuals injured in that, uh, church as
24:13well.
24:14Fourteen of those were children.
24:15As of last report, seven of those who are still hospitalized or injured are in critical
24:22condition, and that is one adult and six children.
24:26And when they list them as critical, uh, that could be, uh, based on a lot of things, but
24:31I do know that this, these are horrific injuries that, uh, can be suffered in situations like
24:36this.
24:37We know that at one point, at the same time, there were four children in surgery, um, we
24:43have not received an update from either HCMC or, uh, Children's Minnesota in the last couple
24:49hours, so we're hoping for the best as those, uh, victims work their way through the injuries
24:54that they suffered.
24:55Uh, we do believe that police were there within minutes, though, and EMS to provide immediate
24:59medical care and to get to those children as quickly as possible.
25:03Um, it just may, these types of surgeries can take so much time, so it may be quite some
25:09time before we get any information about, uh, those who are injured and how they're doing,
25:13other than those who are, um, dealing with non-life-threatening, um, injuries.
25:18So, again, we will take this news conference as soon as it begins, um, this impacting the
25:25state of Minnesota, uh, the city of Minneapolis, uh, the entire country right now, um, federal,
25:31state, local officials, all involved in the process as they dissect and try to figure out
25:37who this gunman is.
25:42Coverage continues from Minneapolis when we come back.
25:45We are awaiting any moment right now a news conference scheduled by police and, uh, officials
25:52out in Minneapolis for the latest on this terrible school shooting.
