00:00Balanced Rock in North Salem, New York
00:02It is one of the most fascinating natural landmarks in the area. It is a massive pink
00:07granite boulder, weighing many tons, carefully balanced on four smaller limestone rocks along
00:14Titicus Road. Geologists call it a glacial erratic, meaning it was carried and deposited
00:20here by the glaciers during the last ice age, which occurred between two million and ten thousand
00:26years ago. The granite does not match the local bedrock, which sports the idea that it was
00:32transported from somewhere else by the moving ice. Still, the exact way the boulder ended up
00:38resting so neatly on top of the fort, spotting stone raises questions. It looks almost too precise
00:46to have happened by accident. This has led to alternative theories. Some people suggest that
00:52it could have been placed there by a Native American as a ceremonial site, or even that
00:58it was built by Duritz. However, no solid evidence have been confirmed these ideas. On the other hand,
01:06marking left by the glaciers on the sporting stones fit the scientists' explanation that the formation
01:13is a product of the ice age. Historical records show that the people have been fascinated by
01:19balanced rock for centuries. Graffiti dating back to the 1860s proves that it has been long a point of
01:27curiosity for locals and visitors. Today, it remains both a scientific puzzle and a cultural landmark.
01:34The boulder itself is made of pink granite filled with shiny potassium feldspar crystals. Some measurements
01:41suggest it is about five meters long, four meters wide, and three meters high. Using these dimensions,
01:48the estimated weight could be closer to 178 tons, much heavier than the 60-ton estimate written on the
01:56nearby sign. While this is only an approximation, it shows just how massive the stone really is.
02:04Despite centuries of studies and speculation, balanced rock still sparks wonder. Whether seen as a natural
02:11ice age relic or as a site that holds sacred meaning for earlier people, it continues to
02:18stand as one of New York's most unusual and mysterious landmarks. If you liked this video,
