00:23Y empezamos con The Roses, Susi.
01:06son Benedict Cumberbatch y Olivia Colman.
01:09¡Guau, qué pareja!
01:10¡Qué pareja, no!
01:10Y además métele el humor inglés ahí, esos giros, porque son crueles esos señores y señoras cuando quieren.
01:19Platicamos con ellos que son adorables, por cierto, no crueles, y esto nos dijeron.
01:22¿Verdad, Bruno?
01:24¡Guau!
01:26¡You're a bottomless pit of need!
01:29¡Verdad, you're just making me madder!
01:36¡I get this wart!
01:42¡Jesús, no!
01:43I would love to know, when the scenes broke, when they said cut, and you guys, well, your characters,
01:51were being so horrible to each other, did you break, or did you just have to get away from it for a moment?
01:57I had a sensitive moment of going, are we okay? Are we okay? Not the character, are we okay?
02:03And she was like, of course, are you all right?
02:06And I went, well, no, it's getting a bit real.
02:08Oh, yeah, so that's sort of issues.
02:11Ben's a much nicer person than me.
02:13Yeah, it gets real, but then, you know, there's a lot of fun in that as well, once you, you know,
02:18you reassert, because I think it's also the way we shot it, there was a lot of harmoniousness
02:22and a little bit of meh, but it was all light and meh, whatever that means.
02:27Yeah, well, it is so much fun to watch, and those of us who saw the original so many years ago,
02:32or the first film, when I heard that you were both doing it, I was like, wow.
02:37Wow, because I think it escalates, it escalates in so many ways because of your careers
02:43and the characters, the emblematic characters you've both done.
02:46So bringing all of that experience and basing on the original, the Danny DeVito, the, you know,
02:53what did you get from that, and what did you add?
02:56Oh, well, thank you.
02:57I mean, I, we both loved the original film, and it was mentioned as an idea when some grown-ups
03:03kind of thought, well, they want to work together, what could we give them to do?
03:06It's something that people would love to watch, and I think, I would love to go and watch this.
03:11I would love to watch this film, with me and Olivia in it.
03:15Well, I certainly did.
03:17Yeah, it's something watchable, definitely.
03:19We don't want to tax people too much.
03:21We need, we need the laughter, and you guys certainly bring it on.
03:26And Olivia, you played Queens, emblematic Queens as well, and a lot of people, maybe in the rest
03:33of the world, I'm in Mexico, maybe they don't know that this is based on actual civil wars.
03:38Well, not this particular story, but yes, the War of the Roses, the Roses itself.
03:43So, yeah, for the throne of England, right?
03:46So, what would you comment on that for people that maybe would just hear, oh, that's their
03:50last name, okay.
03:52Yeah, well, you are better at this, because I'm terrible with history.
03:56It's a civil war reference about a fight between two families to gain ultimate power over the
04:01sovereignty of England.
04:02But no, so, you know, the whole kind of Plantagenet-Yorkis battle before the Tudors emerged out of that
04:08as the unifying of the Red and White Rose.
04:10That was called the War of the Roses.
04:12War of the Roses, because the emblems were red.
04:14I can't remember, were red Yorkis and white Plantagenet, I think.
04:17I should know, I played Richard III.
04:19But, you know, it was a framework for the original American writer, Mr. Adler, to say,
04:25okay, well, look, this is, that's an, that's, we know what that is.
04:28That's the civil war of all civil wars.
04:30And it was a family war, so there were lots of relations fighting each other, and this
04:34is obviously about a couple fighting, so that was the premise.
04:36The book is very, very dark.
04:38The previous film is pretty dark, but funny.
04:41This is a lot funnier, I think, and so delighted to be able to talk to both of you, and congratulations.
04:47We need the laughter, and thanks for that.
04:49Oh, thank you so much.
06:06Venga.
06:06¿Qué pasó?
06:15Es un last call.
06:16Drink them if you got them.
06:18Vamos a volver a tu lugar.
06:19You can take advantage of my court judgment.
06:20I depend on your court judgment.
06:22I want to know if I can take this seriously.
06:25What do you need to take this seriously?
06:27I think that you have a very unique style as a filmmaker, but this story is different.
06:33It is a crime comedy, and I wonder if, do you feel this story is just for entertaining people
06:41or have something special for you inside that you want to share with the audience?
06:47I mean, I definitely wanted to share New York City.
06:50I never really got to make a film that really was as much about the city as about anything.
06:55And I definitely wanted to make an entertaining movie because I think it's important to try to get people to the theaters and to have a good time.
07:04Absolutely.
07:05So there's a moment in time in life when we realize that maybe things should be easier or less complicated.
07:17What do you think about that?
07:18Absolutely.
07:20I mean, even though Austin Butler's character in this movie has a very complicated journey, times were a lot more simple back then.
07:29Decisions.
07:30Yeah, exactly.
07:31So it was kind of fun to bring these characters to life, to sort of show the beauty of the city, photograph Austin Butler and Zoe Kravitz and Matt Smith.
07:43It was a lot of fun.
07:44Yeah, and actually you have a couple of adaptations.
07:50So how was working on this story and how was the creative process with Charlie Houston?
07:56Oh, it was great.
07:56Charlie's a super sweet guy and worked really hard.
08:02And there were many, many drafts.
08:04And to get it right, the book was written quite a while ago.
08:09He wrote it actually in 1998.
08:10So a lot has changed in the world and even though we were still setting it in that time, there were new ideas that came up that we decided to pursue.
08:18Yeah, absolutely.
08:19In each movie that you made, you have a great soundtrack.
08:23So as this one, you go from Scorpions to Idols.
08:27So how do you choose the music for your stories?
08:30And I wonder if your personal playlist sounds like that.
08:34No, Idols, I was a big fan of the band and I thought that this movie could really use a house band, someone who's commenting on the movie the whole time.
08:45And that's how the Idols emerged for it.
08:48And then as far as like all the needle drops, the 90s was such a rich time.
08:53It was just a matter of like doing a bunch of work, trying to figure out what's best for when.
08:57Yeah, absolutely.
08:58So I think that, well, I would like to know if you have a special moment on set that you could remember for the rest of your life or a moment that was very fun for you.
09:14We did a huge chase scene at this famous sculpture in Queens called the Unisphere.
09:20And that's, I couldn't believe that the Parks Department allowed me to do this big action sequence in front of it.
09:28That was a lot of fun.
09:29As an audience, we can recognize Darren's visual style and storytelling from the very first scene.
09:37But Regina, as an actress, what do you see in the script that made you say, yes, I want to be part of this story?
09:43A big part of it, which I think we all share this same sentiment, is that Darren Aronofsky was at the helm.
09:54I'm a huge fan of his work.
09:56He's on like most artists, top 10 directors you want to work with.
10:02See that he would be interested in doing a comedy, but making it be a comedy on his terms was badass and what you would expect from Darren and the cast.
10:22Matt, your physical transformation is striking, but beyond the look, how do you develop the character's emotional side to make him feel real amid the chaos of the 90s in New York?
10:34I think the physical sort of, you know, having such a big kind of physical change with your hair and your clothes and your jewelry and fake tattoos and stuff,
10:43I think this sort of informs a lot of the emotional side in a way.
10:48And so that did a great deal of it.
10:50But I mean, together with Darren and we had some rehearsal process with the other actors and stuff,
10:55you just slowly start to build up this kind of emotional makeup and layers of these people and then get there on the day and do your best.
11:05Yeah, Regina, Darren mentioned before that he was looking for an actress with that New York power for your character.
11:13So how do you work with him to capture that energy?
11:17Honestly, it was an honor that Darren thought that I could pull it off because Darren is New York through and through.
11:27The only other director that is that New York is Spike Lee.
11:31Yeah.
11:31You know, like they love their city.
11:34There's their, you know, in several of their films, you see how much they love their city in the way in which they tell the story.
11:43And this film in particular was truly Darren's love letter.
11:49The last one, Matt, is for you.
11:51You have a special way of bringing your characters to life that really sticks with us.
11:56So how does playing a role like this shape you as an actor?
12:00Well, you know, I think with any, with any, with any job that you get, what's really nice about being an actor is
12:06whether you're playing someone in the royal family or you're playing an alien or whatever, you get to explore these little,
12:12it's like you get to be a bit of a historian into different elements of life.
12:16And I suppose, I don't know, how does it change you?
12:20It's a very good question.
12:22I think, I think, honestly, this is just, it's changed me for the better because I really enjoyed the experience.
12:28Well, it's a great pleasure, Yvette, to be able to share with you this work, to share with all of you these interviews,
12:36then to talk about these productions, because the film continues with everything and we love it profundamente.
12:42100% and, well, what is estrena this week is what we present here, but there is also a very big offer,
12:48so, well, what a pleasure is to be able to be in a cinema.
12:52Absolutely.
12:52Well, we'll be able to share with you.
12:54For now, we'll leave with this.
12:56Thanks.
12:57We'll be right back.
