00:0045,000 at Yankee Stadium, Joe Lewis, one of the hottest properties in town, 23 fights undefeated, a professional for less than two years, and the aim for both these men, of course, the world title currently held by James J. Braddock,

00:27and for Schmeling, who lost his title in 1932 to Jack Sharkey, a chance to regain centre stage, Lewis with his back to us, in the striped shorts, already showing the punch power in his left hand, spectacular wins already in his career against former world champions, Primo Carneiro and Max Baer,

00:48but in the run-up to this fight, Schmeling, now 30 years old, said, I've spotted something, I've seen a weakness,

01:02Schmeling, slightly the shorter man, standing around, about 6 foot 1, against Lewis, just underneath 6 foot 2,

10:34Lewis so used to just steamrolling opponents over,

10:37perhaps to some extent,

10:40maybe believing in his own hype.

10:44Here he's found a man who won't be intimidated,

10:46but there's a good left into the body from Lewis,

10:48good power shot from the youngster.

11:02This is better work from Lewis.

11:07He looked a little bit low,

11:14but it was on the blind side of referee Arthur Donovan.

11:30really made to backpedal, and the crowd responding.

14:48And it really is beginning to develop a predictability in this round.

14:52He's caught it with three or four tremendous shots over the top, Schmeling.

14:56And Lewis is losing whatever mobility he had in the first place in those legs.

15:02Not one of the great fancy downs so far as movement's concerned, Joe Lewis.

15:07But he's undoubtedly been hurt by those three or four big right-hands from the German.

15:27Tired look now to the combinations being thrown by Lewis.
