Two racegoers were taken to the hospital for treatment following an incident in which a horse crashed through barriers at Cartmel.

Spectators at the racecourse, which included Tyson Fury, witnessed the incident in the third race of the day on Monday.

Wbee, which was ridden by jockey Alan Doyle, was pulled up quickly after the second hurdle from the finish.

Footage showed the moments leading up to the incident, which saw the 10-year-old horse trailing behind rivals.

Cartmel Racecourse has confirmed that Wbee then suffered from a sudden heart-related condition, which led to the horse veering off the course.

Doyle had attempted to regain control, but Wbee went through the barriers and into the crowd, hitting two members.

Cartmel issued a statement confirming the incident and the death of Wbee.

'Cartmel Racecourse can confirm that during the third race of our Bank Holiday meeting, the horse Wbee suffered a sudden heart-related condition immediately before the second-last hurdle and collapsed whilst racing.

'This veterinary event, confirmed by the treating veterinary team, caused the horse to deviate from the course, where it came into contact with a group of spectators.

'On-site medical teams responded immediately, and two people were taken to the hospital for further treatment.

'Course officials remain in regular contact with the relevant authorities regarding their condition and will provide updates when appropriate, while ensuring their privacy.

'The attending senior racecourse vet was in attendance in a matter of seconds, but sadly the horse Wbee passed away as he arrived.'

The incident led to a one-hour delay to the bank holiday meeting, with the Cavendish Cup the main event.

The meeting was attended by former heavyweight world champion Fury, who had two runners in the Big Gypsy King and Sea The Clouds on the course.

Big Gypsy King finished fifth out of seven - but last of the finishers - in its race.

Fury then saw Sea The Clouds pulled up in the early stages of the Cavendish Cup.
