00:05US President Donald Trump has claimed on his Truth Social Network

00:10that the US is the only country in the world to use mail-in voting,

00:16vowing to eliminate mail-in ballots ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

00:22Following his trip to Alaska, Trump also told Fox News presenter Sean Hannity

00:27that Russian President Vladimir Putin had told him

00:31that the 2020 US presidential election was rigged due to mail-in voting.

00:37Claims that the 2020 ballot was rigged have been disproven,

00:41as have subsequent theories tying these electoral fraud claims to postal votes.

00:47Researchers have found that although the public may be suspicious of postal votes,

00:51these suspicions are largely unfounded as voter fraud is in practice very rare.

00:56As for Trump's assertion that the US is the only country in the world to use postal voting,

01:02this claim is false.

01:04In October 2024, the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance

01:09released data which showed that 32 countries or territories worldwide authorise postal voting.

01:16In Europe, in-country postal voting is allowed for a restricted category of voters in seven countries

01:23and permitted for all voters in another eight countries.

01:27In fact, Europe has the largest number of countries that make in-country postal voting available to all or some voters.

01:34So, taking a look at the facts reveals that postal voting does exist in Europe

01:38and is not exclusive to the US electoral system, contrary to Trump's claims.
