00:00we're back on the road in our trusty traveling auction house it's a traveling auctioneers on
00:11the hunt for treasures hidden in homes all across britain finding value in those overlooked objects
00:18auction supremos izzy barmer isn't that fabulous james broad and briony harford the things i do
00:26to find the good luck and transforming has-beens into must-haves restorers jj chalmers robin johnson
00:34lauren wood and safakir ready for the auction this our mission to give those unloved and forgotten
00:41gems a new lease of life and make their owners some much needed money 600 to a thousand wow that's
00:48a good find everything we find and fix will go under our gavel as we bring our options to you
00:55at nine thousand pounds you know what we say have gavel will travel
01:08robin i've got a job today i can see you're gonna get all steamy
01:12i can de-steam oh well done i know i'm feeling useful today our little blue van is in yorkshire
01:20with izzy and robin heading to the cathedral city of york i love york actually i went on a
01:25school trip when i was in primary school so york has its roman and viking heritage and history
01:31either the boneless was the original viking invader wasn't he we're listening i think it's
01:3866 ad around that sort of time i think what a smarty pants we're heading to the home of gracie
01:46lance and their young daughter juno they moved to the area around two years ago
01:52we decided to have a baby and then we moved to york in time for juno to be born so she's the only
01:58member of the family that's actually from york and today gracie's mum claire is up from cheltenham to
02:04lend a hand mum's always very practical help when she comes up she'll just get on with whatever needs
02:10doing i always bring old clothes and on shoes now bringing up a toddler always has its challenges
02:17but this special little lady needs a bit more looking after juno is what's called a swan which
02:23is syndromes without a name which is when something probably genetic has happened and it's so rare that
02:31it's it's not actually been named when she was born everything was going sort of totally normally
02:36until she was about six months of age and then that's when we were trying to get her to start
02:41sitting up and she wasn't sitting up the condition affects juno's development so expected baby
02:48milestones like crawling and walking don't come naturally to her it's it's one thing after another
02:55and these are all things that any other child just starts doing whereas you have to really like
03:00teach her how to do them come on pop it come on ready left leg come on left leg there yeah
03:10juno's had physiotherapy since the age of 10 months and whilst it's really improved her mobility
03:16gracie and lance wanted to do more so they've turned to a new intensive therapy pioneered in america
03:22we did a zoom call with a physiotherapist in the us and then she put us in touch with um some in the
03:30uk it's about a three-hour drive from us so it's quite a long way but it's it's worth it with doing
03:37the first week of the intensive physio we really saw the difference it was just the way that they
03:43taught you to do things to enable her it was was brilliant but this extra help isn't cheap and with
03:50gracie looking after juno full-time lance works long hours to cover the costs which is why they've
03:56called us in if we can get 2 000 pounds that'll get us another week of intensive physio anything more
04:02than that's just a bonus we just want to get her sort of running around so she can join in and
04:07do everything else that all the other kids are doing i can't imagine what they're going through
04:12really we've got to try and find every pound and every penny of value there i mean this rests on your
04:18shoulders is he whoa whoa whoa you need to pull your weight robin and do some epic restoration yes
04:26it'll be all hands on deck team to hunt through the heirlooms and help fund juno's physio
04:35good morning how are you really good thanks come on in thank you time to meet the star of the show
04:43come on through this is juno hello hello hello thanks for coming so can we look anywhere and
04:53everywhere you can yeah claire you've brought some of your things with you as well i have yes i've brought
04:58a bootload for some jewelry some paintings it's quite a selection yeah we better get into action
05:05come on then i can see you're a bit busy so you two stay here with juno and we'll get looking great
05:11thank you this gorgeous little girl is all the motivation we need to get searching more dvds
05:18extensive dvd collection we've got just one day to find value and restore as many items as possible
05:26nice little clock very good condition at first glance there's not a lot jumping out it's all very neat and
05:32tidy ah so to give this family the help they need we've got to dig deeper and search everywhere okay
05:42just all clothes i feel a bit odd looking through those and i do mean everywhere
05:49garage hello
05:53aha and the rocking horse
05:55oh this is lovely condition that looks great actually oh hang on oh you poor thing got a big
06:06crack down the side of you do you know what that's a tricky fix as well it's like two bits of wood have
06:11just separated otherwise it looks in really good condition oh dear horsey horsey you had a hard life
06:20well don't worry about it i'll fix you up how am i going to get out to the van though i know
06:28no better not i think it's suffered enough don't you robin
06:32while you work out how to move the horse let's see if izzy's had any luck yet
06:37ah looks like she's indulging in a bit of art
06:40this one is an oil on canvas and it's signed here sunga hg this artist is a 20th century artist and
06:48they're known for their desert landscapes and here we have the camels three camels it looks like a
06:55sandstorms coming in they're sort of all wearing their head scarves covering their mouths and you've
07:00got that hazy sun in the background there let me just see what we've got here so
07:10here we've got a david j lawrence this renowned wildlife artist hails from devon where claire and
07:17gracie used to live it's going to sound odd to suggest putting the two together but individually
07:22there's commission and lotting fees to come out of both for the two together i'd put a guide of 40 to
07:2860 pounds there is a but here the picture market can be extremely tricky and very flat so it may be
07:37an unlucky day and they may only make 30 pounds but it may be a good day and they may make 60 pounds
07:43but for two hand painted pictures that are signed and they're lovely they're well painted then it
07:50seems a bit of a steal at 40 to 60 pounds for two of them a modest find to get the ball rolling but
07:56every little helps outside and with his first job of the day on the list robin is getting our little
08:04blue van all set up for action oh she's looking lovely today time to see if his first patient can
08:13be brought back to life this lovely little rocking horse has got this huge great crack in its side
08:20now i really hope i've got a bit of wood in the van that'll fit in there
08:26aha
08:30that is oak i always keep scrap wood even little bits like this you just never know when they're
08:36going to come in handy yes nothing goes to waste in this van so what i'm going to do is cut little
08:42slither of this oak and slot it in that gap the problem is it's wider at the bottom than it is at the top
08:49and then i've got to shape it all in to match the shape of the horse this is going to be a tricky
08:53job if anyone can do it it's you robin it's too big right cut another piece i may have spoken too soon
09:06it's too small we've got to find the goldilocks piece somewhere in between these two you could
09:13always try measuring it oh yeah that is just right so if i can fit that bit in there
09:24maybe another couple of them that's definitely a bit fiddly isn't it
09:33there you go every single one of them fits like a glove just got to take them all out and glue them all
09:38in hello gracie hello hi you found jotter jotter was this your childhood rocking horse he was yeah
09:44me and my sister had a great time on this one when we were little it felt like a full-size horse yeah
09:49i bet it's a beautiful thing and hopefully this little repair might um bring it back to its former
09:54glory i'd just like to see him being used and and loved and enjoyed well maybe none of us should use
10:00him before the auction no no just in case i better glue these bits in before the rain gets any worse
10:05well i'm gonna get out of the rain all right see you later thanks gracie right the point of no return
10:11i hope this is going to work start at the very bottom of this horse and take a piece out at a time
10:18here we go piece number one now that's in i can take out piece number two gracie's childhood friend
10:28could be the star of the auction so he needs to look his best on the day no pressure robin
10:33okay jotter you're all done and while we wait for that glue to dry back in the house
10:40izzy's on the prowl again hmm troughs that says lou leave no door unopened izzy
10:49ah this is the tidiest airing cupboard i've ever seen everything's organized but there's a box without
10:55a label on so what are you my interest is peaked ooh mine too i love a rummage there are nicknacky bits
11:06however what i'm interested in are these halcyon days enamels now halcyon days they were established
11:12in 1950 so they're a relatively modern company they haven't been around years and years but what they
11:16specialize in are enameled boxes now halcyon days enamels are one of only a few companies that hold
11:25all three royal warrants we've got her majesty the queen elizabeth her majesty queen elizabeth the
11:32queen mother and then more recently king charles the third now because these predate that these don't
11:40have the three as it were they've got one or two the enamels are these hand painted designs and it's on
11:48top of copper so this little box here it's a musical box now it's limited edition so it's numbered to the
11:54base 135 out of 750 we can wind it up give it a little wind we have got these arabian type scenes
12:06shahrazad was the heroine in the arabian classic 1001 nights they're really beautiful and what's
12:23lovely to see is that we have the original boxes so often you might have these display it box gets
12:29stuffed in the loft or thrown out the fact that we have the boxes it adds to the value of these and
12:34that's the most important part for lance and gracie they're lovely but for them they need to get as
12:41much money as they can for juno and for the three of these you're looking easily at 150 pounds good
12:47find izzy if they can make that at auction that'll be a big boost to juno's physio fund
12:52and it looks like robin's back in rummaging mode too that's some gold up here you can always find
13:04something interesting in a loft board games love a board game it's that little basket that's cute
13:10anything up here oh hello what's robin's eagle eye spotted that looks like some kind of
13:21little print press maybe a little letter press that is a lovely little thing looks a bit tired does it
13:29work that's a bit stiff do you know what i think this is an ideal candidate for a bit of restoration
13:38it's nicely made it's very heavy i'm gonna get this down showsy that does look weighty
13:43if you're after your pal she's on the ground floor
13:47oh hello bad luck to pass on the stairs it is look at this oh that's quite cool isn't it cool little
13:53letterpress does it work i can definitely get it working has it got any value though printing press
13:59items particularly if you've got the trays and all the things inside in the drawers they sell really
14:04really well however this is somewhat smaller scale but it'll sell do you know this would be perfect for
14:09me for my christmas cards because i write so many i could just write merry christmas from robin and just
14:16i hope i make the mass-produced christmas card list robin well i better get it working after you
14:24i'm going that way okay thank you very much
14:28it's off to the van with you for a closer look okay what have we got i think it's tinkering time
14:36now this multi-purpose oil i'm going to put in the little holes there by putting oil in these little
14:42lubrication points it frees up the mechanism and allows it to move a lot more smoothly that's what
14:48we're after right let's see that oil has freed it oh yeah look at that well that's a lot freer so you
14:54press this lever down that little roller which is missing would roll ink over the letters then your card
15:01would be there it pressing like that but at the same time that roller is coming up here and rolling
15:08across this surface with ink on it as you bring this down the roller rolls back down across the letters
15:13the clever part though there's a little ratchet mechanism which spins the ink wheel around so
15:19that the roller is not always rolling across the same patch it kind of moves it around keeps the ink a
15:23lot fresher what is missing though is the little roller across the front now i think this brand is
15:29still making these little printers so i'm going to make a few calls and see if i can find a roller so while
15:34robin gets on the blower have you got rollers i've got the model number back inside is anything else
15:40pinging izzy's rummaging radar oh what have i got here toys oh it's got four boxes of die cast what's
15:52really good to see about these is they're all in their boxes and this really adds value and it's really
15:59important to a collector there are two brands that are the most desirable brands and they are corgi and
16:05dinky now having a look here i've got vanguards and i've got models of yesteryear so i haven't got
16:11the valuable brands but they are all box and there's a lot of them here i would put them all as one lot
16:19personally with a guide of 50 to 70 pounds they just don't really seem like a gracie item to me i wonder
16:26where they've come from gracie hello hello hello what have you found i've discovered the car collection
16:35yes yeah there's quite a lot not only is there quite a lot they don't strike me very much as a
16:40you sort of item no so these belong to andrew my stepdad um he passed away two years ago since he
16:49passed away my mum's been sorting through them donating them to charity giving them away um and then
16:54she wanted me to take over the job because it's been quite a big job having downsized claire's
17:00decided to let go of more of andrew's possessions at least his car collection and other items can go
17:06to auction to help juno lead a more active life two years on though the tragedy of andrew's death still
17:13affects the whole family greatly andrew and i were very excited to come here and have a lovely christmas
17:20and um we did up until boxing day and sadly andrew had a massive heart attack we tried resuscitation and
17:31the ambulance came so quickly from york hospital and um but it was to no avail we'd just bought this
17:41house but i just i wanted to move i didn't i didn't want to i didn't want to stay after that happened
17:49but as if losing a loved one and coping with juno's needs weren't enough gracie's had to battle with
17:55health issues of her own i could feel something here so i went to see the doctor and um she took it very
18:03seriously and i was referred to have a scan on my neck and then it came back as thyroid cancer
18:09i went from feeling the lump to having the first half of my thyroid removed within about
18:14eight weeks yeah definitely starting to feel like it's just one thing after another um very unlucky
18:21just a run of bad luck i have to take medication that replaces the hormones that thyroid would
18:27would produce um and i'll have to take that every every day for the rest of my life it's just one of
18:33those things and and of any other cancers to have it is a very treatable one the strength that this
18:40family has shown in the face of hardship is truly incredible and that's why it's vital for us to find
18:47as much as we can to go under the hammer
18:49so far we've picked up a pair of paintings and uncovered that splendid rocking horse
18:57also on the list are the music boxes and the printing press still needing a fix
19:03further digging unearths a pair of enameled ruby and gilt brandy glasses
19:07now they look bohemian they're going to be 20 to 30 pounds there's a 19th century mahogany tea caddy
19:13it's a nice little box very ornate that's been valued at 30 to 50 pounds and a selection of movie
19:22related action figures i cannot stress enough how having the boxes is really vital to the value of a
19:29toy izzy will put a price of 30 to 50 pounds on those as well and let's not forget the toy car
19:35collection which belonged to andrew izzy's keen to find out a bit more about the man behind the vans
19:42hi hey are you doing some work no no just a few photos this is andrew that's myself so this is
19:50obviously a fairly recent few years ago and andrew's a younger man well i think he was probably only
19:56about 17 now i'd say i think it might be a wooden spoon he's receiving he used to like rally driving
20:02so it was probably his first competition he did quite well at uh rally driving i think he had a few
20:08maestro and various different british rally cars we accumulated quite a number of uh items he had an
20:17interesting tractor really yeah and hopefully that might be something that would be useful to go to
20:23auction so does it work the tractor i really don't know um to be honest i've never set eyes in it it's
20:28it's been well looked after in a barn his friend martin looks after it well thanks to technology
20:35claire and izzy can get their first look at it hi claire how are you hi martin i'm izzy i think
20:42you've been busy with that tractor haven't you we've managed to get it going so this one's actually
20:47a kfd 52 built at dagenham on the 31st of august 1953 it was used up in the bristol docks for shunting
20:58railway carriages she's in very good working condition just goes to show they're built to last
21:03aren't they well considering he's 71 years old wow can you get it started for us so we can have a listen
21:11her is like a dream our traveling auctioneer's auction it's it's not the right way to sell this
21:18we need a vintage tractor specialist you know that auction house will have contacts with all
21:24the tractor buyers because it is a niche market it is that a fantastic machine will be off to the
21:30auction house of hj pu and co who know a thing or two about tractors and our izzy has put a value of
21:36four to six thousand pounds on it excellent news for juno's fund it's lovely that juno will have a
21:44bit of her granddad sort of helping her with her care even though andrew isn't here yeah he's still
21:48helping her through providing the money through the sale of his items that's right yeah how that
21:53physiotherapy i'd like the idea with that i'll get a walk in that'll be lovely that would be really
21:58something you're gonna set me off
22:01now from 54 horsepower down to just one we're ready for the next step of robin's rocker restoration
22:10the glue's dried so now i need to saw this excess timber off what i've done by putting a bit of
22:14masking tape either side of the timber is just offer it a tiny bit of protection so the side of the saw
22:20blade doesn't leave loads of cut marks and scratch marks in the existing wood it also gives me a little
22:25barrier because i'm going to need to stain this oak to match this color and varnish it with the masking tape
22:30it means i'll just stain the light wood and don't touch any of the existing wood right let's get
22:37cutting careful there robin we don't want other faults to fix this saw is a little japanese pool saw
22:45i'm using this because it's quite delicate and it's also quite flexible because i need to cut around the
22:50shape of the horse's body
22:58okay that rough cut is done it's been cut pretty close to the original body of the horse but it is
23:04a little bit rough this is a job for sandpaper and elbow grease no power tools for this delicate work
23:11it's completely level run my finger over it it's really smooth even the grain matches
23:16all it needs now is a coat of wood stain to blend it into the rest of the body
23:24i can take the masking tape off now see how my repair is looking it's the moment of truth
23:35that is brilliant i'm really happy with that repair you can hardly tell it's a good honest repair
23:41and it just blends in perfectly and with izzy giving it a guide price of 150 to 200 pounds
23:47let's hope that jota gallops away at the auction
23:51but we still need some more lots so hop to it izzy leave no nook or cranny unscoured
23:57a wee little cupboard under the stairs a tiny little door oh they really are making use of
24:07this cupboard it's packed full of boxes i think you found a secret stash there izzy
24:14this is the smallest cupboard under the stairs i've ever seen
24:17and it is full of metalwares got some trench art copper samovar another one there
24:26ah that's rather sweet it's a miniature coal scuttle you're not going to fit much coal into this but
24:31originally it's been modeled on what would have been a bigger fuller sized coal scuttle
24:35and what i love is the attention to detail so you've got these lion mask handles here
24:40in brass you've got the copper you've got this little ceramic delft style blue and white handle
24:46it's known as a helmet shaped scuttle because turn it upside down and it looks like old-fashioned
24:51military headgear it's a bit mucky though there's a lot of verdigris on there hmm that needs a robin
24:59cleanup and to be fair if he's got time some of the other items in here would benefit from a bit of a
25:05clean as well it would definitely be sensible to sell all the three boxes of metalware
25:10there's one lot and i would hope that it would make 30 to 40 pounds quite comfortably
25:15right let's go and find my man yes we'd hate for him to be bored mind you he is still wrestling
25:21with that printing press oh look new rollers put one in there the other one goes in there
25:29hmm doesn't want to return what it is is these shafts just need a little bit of oil in there
25:34if we can lubricate it a bit it will move a lot more easily let's try that again
25:43oh there we go we got it as good as new so this works really well so much though i'm feeling pretty
25:51confident i've even bought a little bit of ink i'm guessing that's how you put it on
25:55that'll do and i think you'll need some gloves for this robin could get messy i'm gonna move the
26:03roller across the ink a little bit get a nice even spread all right well that looks nice and even
26:08so it is time to put it to the test right moment of truth but will it work the suspense is killing me
26:19oh look at that we now have a fully functioning letterpress what a brilliant little thing
26:35and now it's working let's put a value of 20 to 30 pounds on it i better clean it up though before
26:41auction i don't want blue ink everywhere well if you're in a cleaning mood i think your chum has
26:47something hello hello i've got a big coal scuttle for you the biggest coal scuttle you've ever seen
26:57wow it's got a bit of verdigris on it isn't it just a bit well what i can do is clean it up a bit for
27:03you if you like now here's the thing go on that's just one item of a box of mixed metalwares so this is
27:12the one that needs the most attention but if you had time and only if you felt like being super helpful
27:20there are also more fantastic my day as a restorer would not be complete without polishing a little
27:25bit of metal somewhere along the line yeah a little bit three boxes bye thanks izzy such a generous soul
27:32hour izzy go on robin i know you're just itching to get stuck in the verdigris on this that stuff
27:39the oxide is quite bad on this so i wouldn't be surprised if some kind of chemicals done this
27:45so i'm going to try my old favorite superfine wire wall now the majority of these corrosive marks
27:53are being removed but it's it is still leaving behind a little remnant i've got a little idea
28:01that i want to test out when i was a kid i used to drop my pennies in cola
28:06and i'll pick them out a couple of minutes later and they'll be shiny as anything
28:12so i'm hoping i can use a little bit of cola to clean up this
28:18it's not the fizz but the phosphoric acid in the drink that reacts with the copper oxide
28:23is it gonna work it's starting to work oh my goodness the difference between the areas that
28:30are treated with cola and wire wool and they haven't been touched they're really stark
28:34so it is doing a good job i know the inside's quite corroded i'll just pour a little bit of
28:38this in there and see if the chemical reaction cleans the inside of the copper for us
28:43we're certainly fizzing but is it gonna clean let's leave that to bubble away and see if izzy can
28:51conjure one last bit of magic ah that is very cool that is the coolest door handle i've ever seen
29:02there's bound to be something exciting behind a secret door
29:08ah now this big crystal flower necklace is butler and wilson butler and wilson creates big chunky
29:19obvious glitzy jewelry on its own that necklace is going to have a value of around 20 pounds
29:26but i wouldn't put it on its own because i can see there are already other bits of costume
29:30jewelry in here that and it would be better to sell it all as one but it's not the costume
29:36jewelry that i'm interested in here this was glinting at me it's a rotary wristwatch the strap
29:41is gold-plated stainless steel the case though this is a bit more of a conundrum it looks gold
29:49but there are no hallmarks on it as they're not on the lugs they're not on the case they're going
29:53to be on the inside if it's gold it's 30 to 50 pounds if it's gold plated it goes in with our
30:00collection of costume jewelry value-wise
30:03easily 30 to 50 pounds for all of it not a bad little haul but not quite the wow factor we were
30:13hoping for i found the jewelry i have indeed something else i've got no idea if it's real or
30:19not do you want me to keep the suspense or do you want me to tell you uh up to you it is a diamond
30:26oh great 18 karat gold but how about we go out to the van and i'll tell you why okay it's not just
30:33robin that keeps his tools in there it's a bit like doing detective work assessing gemstones inside i can
30:40see that there are inclusions now the most common stone used to imitate a diamond is a cubic zirconia
30:48they're man-made they do not have inclusions i have never seen a cz with inclusions
30:54inclusions are tiny irregularities trapped inside the diamond as it forms over billions of years
31:00it's also set in 18 karat white gold you can set other stones in 18 karat white gold but it would
31:05be unusual none of these so far are absolutely diagnostic that it's a diamond so this is a
31:11diamond tester this is going to prove that this is a diamond there we go it's beeped it is a diamond
31:18ring value wise you'd be looking at 100 to 150 pounds great it's good news that it's a real diamond
31:26but it's bad news for someone else because i actually found this in a car park when i was a child
31:31i had it that long yeah i did report it but no one came forward so i've just had it in my jewelry box for
31:35about 15 years it's lovely it's just not my style fantastic so we can sell this for juno's pot we can
31:42that's more like it nothing like a bit of bling for your final find now let's see if the cola's done
