02:37Non è successo!
02:39Non è successo!
02:41Sì, scegliamo!
02:43Sì, abbiamo un'automobile.
02:47Sei qui?
02:49Sì, siamo qui!
02:53911, dove è il suo emergencio?
02:57Sì, sono l'automobile.
02:59Siamo nel rio e un uomo diede.
03:01Non è successo!
03:03Un man's intestines are falling out of his body.
03:05Ok, stop, stop, stop right now.
03:07What's going on?
03:09I'm on Apple River.
03:11Apple River in Wisconsin.
03:13Police rushed to the scene,
03:15but the damage had already been done.
03:17And the attacker, Nikolai,
03:19had fled the scene.
03:21The race was now on to apprehend Nikolai
03:23and determine what caused him to commit
03:25such a horrifying act.
03:27This footage has never
03:29ever been seen.
03:31Viewer discretion is advised.
03:35I'll peek it this way,
03:37if you could get this way.
03:39Yep!
03:41They're doing CPI right now.
03:43If we could launch a boat here and get up there,
03:45that'd be awesome.
03:47a quarter of a mile upriver
03:49on the 54 bridge.
03:51Did he go up on the north or south bank?
03:53South bank.
03:54He went up right here?
03:55They don't know.
03:56No one knows.
03:57Ok.
03:58They said this region.
03:59They don't know exactly where.
04:00Ok.
04:01Are you three all witnesses?
04:03Friends of one of the victims?
04:05All of them.
04:06The ones that got stabbed.
04:07Ok.
04:08I just saw the video.
04:09That's a dude.
04:10Ok.
04:11You didn't see it in person happen though?
04:12No.
04:13Ok.
04:14We were floating.
04:15We caught up to that group of kids.
04:16Ok.
04:17And the guy was harassing them.
04:18And so I wanted to stop it before.
04:20I was worried they were going to hurt that guy.
04:22Ok.
04:23I was worried they were going to gang up on him.
04:25She went over there to try and defuse it.
04:27He punched her.
04:28And then started.
04:29Yeah.
04:30He just started stabbing everyone.
04:31Literally just went crazy.
04:32And then the other group tried to stop him.
04:34And what did he look like?
04:35He was like probably this big.
04:37250 pounds.
04:38He was wearing a chain.
04:39He was kind of bald.
04:41It literally just happened so fast.
04:42He was stereotypical pleasy rushes.
04:43That's what he looked like.
04:44I first saw him.
04:45He had scuba goggles.
04:46Yes.
04:47Clear goggles.
04:48Scuba goggles on?
04:49Ok.
04:50Now that the officers have a clear description of this man,
04:52all hands go on deck to find him immediately.
04:55As such, officers send up multiple thermal drones
04:58and shut down the area until his capture.
05:01The hunt is on to find this ramped killer.
05:04I'll turn around to stop sign up here.
05:06Hey.
05:07Where do you guys meet people?
05:09Start roaming.
05:10Roaming perimeter on this road.
05:1230 year old white male.
05:15Black shorts.
05:16Do you have a picture?
05:17No.
05:18Not yet.
05:19I'm waiting on the picture.
05:20White male about 30 years old.
05:21I went down to the campground down here at the river.
05:24I notified all of them to get off the river.
05:26Oh, what's his name?
05:27We, uh...
05:28I don't think we have a name.
05:30I don't think we do yet either.
05:31Just start roaming this.
05:32However, it wouldn't take long to find Nikolai as a witness noticed him
05:37and threatened him with a baseball bat to wait for officers.
05:40Our current witness says that the male appears to be wearing a camel-colored shirt.
05:44and ran him back.
05:45Okay.
05:46Okay.
05:47Yes.
05:48Yes, yes.
05:49I'm sorry, yeah.
05:50That's okay.
05:51We're just being detained at this point, okay?
05:52Yes.
05:5336 dispatch.
05:54Believe we have the suspect detained.
05:55Believe we have him detained at this time.
05:57No.
05:58No weapons going up in the camp?
05:59Okay.
06:00We don't even have my clothes on.
06:01Okay.
06:02What's your name?
06:03Nick.
06:04Nick what?
06:05Nick Mew.
06:06Yeah, I think that's it.
06:07It matches.
06:08Silver block chain.
06:09Like I said, sir, you're just detained at this point, okay?
06:10We'll explain anything in a second here.
06:11I'm still coming, emerging.
06:12I'm just getting for Baldwin.
06:13And I need it.
06:14The guy with the baseball bat was just responding to the sighting.
06:30Hi.
06:31Can you step up for a second?
06:33We just want to check you out.
06:35We just want to check you out.
06:36Are you injured at all?
06:37No, other than my butt.
06:38Very injured and scratched.
06:39Your butt's injured?
06:40Well, from sliding all over the stones.
06:43Oh, the rocks?
06:44Yeah.
06:45And my hands, I think.
06:46Okay.
06:47Take a look at you here.
06:48Yeah.
06:49Now that police have Nikolai apprehended, they can bring him to the station and begin investigating
06:54what happened.
06:55However, as Nikolai is about to leave the lake, he says something that would change this investigation
07:01completely.
07:02Somebody, I hear somebody got stabbed.
07:04Can I fit the description?
07:05Yes, you do.
07:06All right.
07:07Yep.
07:08So we're working through that now.
07:09Did you see that fight on the river?
07:11I heard about it.
07:12You heard about it?
07:13Yeah.
07:14And I seen people gather around.
07:15Okay.
07:16All right.
07:17And I went over to talk to see if somebody saw anything, but that's about it.
07:21Okay.
07:22Our whole group was pretty interested in finding out what happened.
07:26Okay.
07:27And that's your whole group over there?
07:28The jail?
07:29Yeah.
07:30Yeah.
07:31No, Ted.
07:32Did you see anybody injured?
07:33No.
07:34You didn't see anybody injured?
07:35No.
07:36Did you see anybody fighting?
07:37I heard people screaming at each other, yes.
07:39Okay.
07:40Screaming in anger or screaming in pain?
07:42Do you know?
07:43Everybody's drunk, so I don't know.
07:46I can't tell the difference, but I would say, I don't know.
07:51Just screaming.
07:52Okay.
07:53You know, calling each other names.
07:56You know, that's...
07:58I've seen that all day.
08:00Right.
08:01We've all been drinking a lot.
08:03I'm sure they're drunk.
08:04I'm sure they're kids being kids.
08:08Not only does Nikolai completely deny that he was responsible for the stabbings,
08:13but he pretends that no one even got hurt.
08:16The video recordings from the stabbing clearly show the attacker's face,
08:20as well as the chain Nikolai is wearing right now.
08:23Regardless of what happened during the altercation,
08:26the fact that he feels the need to pretend to be completely innocent
08:30will downplay any of his future statements.
08:33Regardless, Nikolai will be transported to the St. Croix Sheriff's Office
08:37where he will undergo an intense interrogation.
08:40But for now, police need to speak with witnesses on scene to try and better understand the story
08:45from the point of view of those who saw it directly.
08:48Can you tell me, I guess, what you saw to the best of your recollection?
08:51When we got about 400 yards and tear up there, there was a group of small groups of kids.
09:00They looked like kids.
09:02The spy was harassing them.
09:04They were pointing at him, telling him to get away.
09:07Okay.
09:08Two of the boys right away got up out of her.
09:11Two other girls did.
09:12They went over and tried to get him away from them.
09:15And he looked over and punched Madison in the face.
09:20Okay.
09:21And then the other boy hit him back as soon as he punched her.
09:26The guy pulled out a knife and he just started just stabbing people that were around him.
09:31Okay.
09:32We were just chilling and then we saw this older guy start harassing these younger teenagers.
09:38and we're the type of people to not let that happen because they're young.
09:42So we tried to stop him and he punched me in the face and then went literally crazy
09:47because all the guys started attacking him because he punched me in the face.
09:50So he took out a knife and he just started stabbing everybody and that's what happened.
09:53Everybody was just...
09:55It's all because he punched me in the face.
09:57That's really why anybody just got stabbed.
10:00If you're thinking by that statement that it's your fault, it most definitely is not, okay?
10:05We were floating down the river.
10:08We caught up to a group of kids sitting in their tubes with an older guy standing over.
10:14How old do you think kids were?
10:16The kids were high school kids.
10:18High school kids.
10:19Isaac was part of that group, the one that passed away.
10:24He was part of that other group.
10:26And they were flagging us down telling us,
10:28Please help us. This guy's a pastor. He won't leave us alone.
10:31And at first I thought they were joking.
10:33He's like, no, really, please, help us, help us.
10:36He's being very creepy.
10:37But that group of kids, I was worried that they were all going to gang up on him
10:41and something bad was going to happen to the 52-year-old guy.
10:46I was worried something was going to happen to him.
10:48We just wanted to shoo the guy away.
10:50I figured he'd go away if he saw people intervening.
10:53Next thing I know, everyone's running at me.
10:57He stabbed me, he stabbed me, you know.
11:00And I saw the guy get punched and fall down.
11:03Who's the guy?
11:04Sorry.
11:05No, that's okay.
11:06Good suspect.
11:07I saw him flailing wildly, but I didn't realize he was stabbing everyone.
11:10And next thing I know, I had...
11:12I'm dying. I can't breathe. You gotta, you know.
11:16And I tried to get her in a tube so we could pull her down and get her off.
11:20And it was just utter chaos from that point.
11:23Based on what witnesses are saying, Nikolai was inappropriately approaching a group of minors in the lake,
11:29was noticed by another group doing these things,
11:32and was confronted by the teens, causing him to stab anyone who tried attacking him.
11:37But this is only coming from the side of the victim's friends.
11:40Nikolai's friends and family, on the other hand, would seem to have a completely different recollection of what went down.
11:46Who'd you come with personally?
11:48Just me and my husband both here, and we met all of them over here.
11:52Okay.
11:53At any point in time, did any member of your group ever leave your group?
11:57This is my husband.
11:59Ariel lost his phone.
12:01Okay.
12:02So he was trying to find it.
12:04And he had it in one of those floaty things, but he thought maybe water got in it.
12:08So he put on, he brought scuba stuff with like, and he put that on and he was down in the water looking for it.
12:14Did you see him the whole time he was off his tube?
12:16Yes, I did.
12:17Okay.
12:18What was he doing while he was off his tube?
12:20He was looking.
12:21Yeah.
12:22And then this group of guys, I don't know how many was on these tubes, saw all of them get off their tubes and they started hitting him.
12:33Okay.
12:34All right.
12:35And what happened after that?
12:36I yelled and then I just heard screaming.
12:37Okay.
12:38And Nick and these guys all came back.
12:39Yep.
12:40They were on the other side and we were on this side of the river.
12:41Yep.
12:42All I heard is somebody got hurt, but I don't know how.
12:43Okay.
12:44I don't know anything about that.
12:45I just heard someone was hurt.
12:46Does Nick know any carry?
12:47Does he ever carry a weapon with them?
12:48He had a knife in his pocket.
12:49Not a very big one and he said those guys grabbed it from him.
12:50The people he was fighting with?
12:51Yep.
12:52They grabbed it and he said they swung it at him and he grabbed their hand and moved it
12:56away.
12:57Okay.
12:58And that's when they went, I didn't see it, that's what he told me.
12:59Okay.
13:00And then they went, and they all they kept saying is they called me a
13:19And they started hitting me and he said all they did was try and look for this phone.
13:23All right.
13:25Okay.
13:26Okay.
13:27Nicolai's friends and wife claim he was spontaneously attacked and that Nick's knife was grabbed
13:54by the teens and that he was even threatened with the knife.
13:57The phone recording shows Nicolai was ganged up 6 to 1 when initially confronted, turning
14:02to 13 people against one shortly after, helping to authenticate those claims.
14:08This complicated things for detectives.
14:10The side against Nick claims he's a pedophile and went on a rampage after being called out.
14:16The side with Nick claims he was attacked by the teens and didn't see him doing anything
14:21predatorial.
14:22It's clear based off the phone recording that Nick did indeed commit the stabbings.
14:26However, his reasoning is uncertain.
14:29If the detectives determined the teens unnecessarily attacked Nick, then he could plead self-defense
14:34and most likely win.
14:36But if detectives can determine Nick acted erratically after being exposed for approaching a group
14:40of minors, then self-defense is less plausible and he'd be facing murder charges.
14:47In order to solve this mystery, detectives decide to conduct interviews with every prominent
14:51witness that was at the scene the day of the stabbings.
14:54However, as the case would unfold, detectives would unravel disturbing secrets from both
15:00parties, leading to one of the most twisted conclusions in the history of policing.
15:07Police began by talking to Ashley, who was on the scene during the stabbings.
15:10So yeah, I'm just kind of trying to follow up on the craziness that happened out there.
15:16How are you doing?
15:17Pretty good.
15:18So you were out there with a group of friends for the day?
15:20Yes.
15:21And we were just going down the river.
15:23And then we saw this older man harassing these teenage boys.
15:28So Maddie said, hey, get away, get out of their faces, just move along.
15:34And all of a sudden he punched her in the face.
15:36She went down and I were slowly walking up there and said, dad, I just got stabbed.
15:42He has a knife.
15:43He just stabbed me.
15:44And then that's when I turned and looked at guts were all over.
15:48He was holding on to them.
15:50And then that's when he was like, go call 911.
15:52And I was trying to get back, just started calling everyone and whatnot, telling everyone
15:57to get out of the river and everything like that.
15:59Everything just happened so fast.
16:00Yeah.
16:01So he was harassing them.
16:03And then you said he was messing with their tubes.
16:05Yeah, he was trying to like pull apart their tubes.
16:09And that was the first contact you had with that other group?
16:11Yes.
16:12So then, you know, you asked that other group if they need help.
16:15And they said that, you know, he was harassing them, messing with their tubes.
16:18And then what happened next?
16:20That's when Maddie went up to the group.
16:24Maddie went up to the old guy, said, hey, get out of here.
16:27You know, stop messing with these boys.
16:29They're only teenagers.
16:30Like, I don't know what started him off to wanting to punch her in the face.
16:35But that's when he punched her in the face.
16:39She slipped, fell in the water.
16:41That's when everybody surrounded him saying, don't hit a woman.
16:45Just get out of here.
16:46And everything like that.
16:47That's when I'm slowly walking towards Maddie to see if she was okay.
16:50Okay.
16:50And everything like that.
16:51Ashley's story doesn't quite line up with the other witnesses' claims.
16:56Or the speculation that Nikolai was doing anything that could classify him as a pedophile.
17:00She claims he was harassing a group of male teens.
17:04And when Maddie approached him to stop, she was punched in the face.
17:07This is what caused the group to confront and push Nikolai.
17:12Not because of the predatorial theories.
17:14Regardless, punching Maddie for what seems like no reason at all is not only assault of a minor,
17:20but degrading to any defense Nikolai could make in trial.
17:23Next, detectives speak to Emma, who shared the gruesome and horrifying details of watching the stabbings happen in real time.
17:31Pulse, if you want, you just take me that day and tell me everything.
17:37Yeah, it was a day I'll never, ever forget, honestly.
17:40And so we had our music playing, and we hear arguing.
17:44So, you know, we're not paying attention to it because we didn't come there for that.
17:47And so we turn around, and that's when my brother Larry on, he was like,
17:51Sis, sis, you seeing this?
17:53And I'm like, seeing what?
17:55So then that's when we all get off of the raft.
17:57And so we stop it because the current was pulling us.
17:59So then that's when I see a guy just stab some poor boy in the stomach and go straight down.
18:06And then that's when I saw him trying to put his intestines back in his stomach.
18:10He was trying to, still processing what was happening.
18:13Everybody was screaming around.
18:15The people who were trying to grab the knife from the man, it was like a lady and three other maybe teens.
18:22She was stabbed, and she floated down the river.
18:24That's when she floated to us, and we put her on our raft and was holding her insides in
18:29because she was still just bleeding out and crying.
18:32And so then that's when I got my phone off the plastic bag and called the police.
18:35And it's like, dang, how are we going to stop this?
18:37But then other people rushed to go help him.
18:40The guy who had his intestines out and another person was trying to grab the knife from the guy,
18:45but still two other people got stabbed after that.
18:47Well, as we got to the grass area and we were helping the girl, we were keeping her calm.
18:51I was on the phone with the police at that time, trying to give them the location of where we were on the river.
18:57The owner of Apple River and his workers, the people who worked at the river,
19:03they were coming down and trying to climb down from the area and asking us what was happening.
19:08And we told them what we saw and the weapon that we saw there, too.
19:13And even fairly quickly, I don't think he was running, but with all the commotion,
19:17we were more concerned about all the blood in the water, intestines floating,
19:21and other people who were severely bleeding.
19:24And so at that point, it was really just, let's help the people who were hurt
19:27instead of going to chase after the guy.
19:30So at what point did you see the knife?
19:32Was there already chaos in people that were injured?
19:34I saw the knife, well, yeah, I saw the knife once it was put into the male's body.
19:40He went in and went down, and then that's when the intestines fell out.
19:45He pulled the knife out.
19:46I saw people trying to swing and grab the knife or stop him,
19:50and that's when he just went and stabbed everybody who came at him.
19:53He was just poking people.
19:55So the first male you saw injured was one with the stomach injury?
19:59Yes.
20:00Yep, he did walk up first, and he must have saw the knife first
20:03because he did walk up a little hostile,
20:05but I understand if he did see a knife coming at a group of teenagers,
20:09I do understand that.
20:10Did you see the other people wounded?
20:13I mean, like, did you see the physical action
20:15that the older male did to wound the other people?
20:18Yeah, three of them.
20:19It was three of them.
20:21Three of them I did see.
20:22Those were all the people who tried to stop, put his hands out,
20:25don't do this, and he just,
20:28I just stabbed everybody who's in his way.
20:29Can you describe when the other people were stabbed a little bit more?
20:34Do you have any more detail to add on that?
20:36First, I did see the other guy swing,
20:41so the one who was not as injured, he did, like, sort of swing at him,
20:44but that is when he missed, you didn't hit him,
20:47and the guy did come around,
20:49and then same for the girl.
20:51She, like, came up and, like, tried to push him,
20:53but wasn't successful, didn't have enough reach,
20:56and he went right for her side, right here,
20:58or one of these sides on the side right here
21:01and stabbed her in the stomach,
21:03and she was trying to walk away,
21:05and then she just dropped in the water
21:07and he attacked him.
21:08You are the things, too.
21:10Based on both Ashley and Emma's story,
21:12Nikolai is painted as a cold-blooded killer
21:15who went on a rampage after being confronted
21:18and stabbed anyone he could reach.
21:20But it seems Emma might have a bias in her retelling of events.
21:23She recounts any attacks on Nikolai in an almost defeated way,
21:27as if she's ashamed to admit the story was rather double-edged at times.
21:32The teens were, without a doubt, wrong to some degree.
21:36It was unnecessary to gang up on Nikolai so heavily
21:39and attack him helplessly while he fell to the ground.
21:42But was this enough reason to stab five people in self-defense?
21:46The detectives will need to find more evidence
21:48to accurately figure this out.
21:50So with this in mind,
21:51detectives take a different approach
21:53and interview Amanda Nikolai's co-worker
21:55who went to the Apple River alongside the same group as Nikolai.
21:59I'll just start.
22:00It's my understanding that you are co-workers with Nik.
22:04Yes, he works in the other building.
22:06Okay.
22:07And how long have you known Nik?
22:09We started hanging out probably when his wife retired.
22:14Okay, so his wife used to work here?
22:15Yep.
22:16Sondra or Sandy?
22:17Sandy, yep.
22:18She was a supervisor in the other building.
22:21I'll say three years.
22:22Three years is when you kind of started normally...
22:25Yeah.
22:25Hanging out and...
22:27Yeah.
22:27Lots of co-workers come over.
22:29She invited co-workers over
22:30and everybody's friends with him
22:33and everybody.
22:34Everybody's shocked.
22:36Right.
22:37So about Nik, your friendship with him,
22:39what do you know about him?
22:40Can you just kind of describe him?
22:42What do you know about him?
22:43His story, where he came from,
22:44his history, what his likes are?
22:46He came from Romania.
22:48He's just an outdoorsman.
22:51Likes to fish and fishing and just being outside and quiet.
22:57Just calm.
22:58Doesn't like a lot of noise and chaos.
23:02But, yeah, he's just a very calm, caring guy
23:06who would help whenever we needed help with something
23:11that would break down,
23:12he'd come over and fix it
23:14or help Ernesto fix something
23:16and just always helping out.
23:18Always helping people.
23:21Can you kind of just describe the day from there?
23:24Yeah, we just got there
23:27and we got everybody together
23:28and went and got our stuff
23:30and we started setting up the tubes
23:32and we just got in and started going.
23:37And then Sandy kind of looked and said,
23:42Nick's in trouble, Nick's in trouble.
23:43And I was still sitting and saying,
23:46Nick's in trouble, somebody help him, somebody help him.
23:48And then I got up, I'm looking.
23:51I never saw Nick down there.
23:53I never saw any of our group down there.
23:58And I never saw Nick down there.
23:59And I'm just looking.
24:00I just see people just going every which way.
24:03I didn't see any blood or anything.
24:05And I just, I'm like, what's going on?
24:08There's a big fight going on.
24:10And then I was handed a phone.
24:12I think Tatiana called the police.
24:14But she handed me the phone.
24:15And I'm like, there's something going on.
24:17We're at the Apple River, Fulton.
24:18And there's something happening.
24:19There's a fight.
24:20I don't know what's going on.
24:22And I think I just repeated.
24:23And then she hung up.
24:26And after that, Nick came back.
24:29And I just looked at it.
24:30I'm like, what happened?
24:32He's like, they call me a file.
24:35They took my snorkel.
24:36They attacked me.
24:37They threw me on the ground.
24:40Assaulted up.
24:41Attacking me.
24:41And I'm like, I thought there was some kind of fight going on.
24:46And maybe he kind of bumped into them.
24:49I did see the kid on the side.
24:52I thought maybe he knocked his head or maybe got water in him.
24:55I didn't know anything about stabbing or anything at that time.
25:00He just, he looked like kind of stunned and shocked.
25:02And then he, I think he sat down.
25:06He didn't say another word.
25:08He didn't say nothing.
25:09And everybody's just like looking around.
25:11I see the police.
25:12The police are here.
25:14So let's just wait and see.
25:15Maybe they want to talk to Nick because he was part of the thing.
25:18If I knew, if I knew then, what I know now, we would not have gone down that river.
25:29I would have been like, if something happened, you gotta go.
25:33If I saw something really, if I thought that he did something where I saw it, I'd be like,
25:40what do you, you gotta go, you gotta, and I thought he would even like stop and say,
25:45hey, something happened.
25:47I mean, I have to go.
25:48I would think he would have said something like that.
25:52And, and we're all there.
25:55It's, it's terrible for us because now we're getting all this crap from people.
26:03I don't know, I got a phone call this morning and it was nobody on the line.
26:08So I'm, we're all scared.
26:11This is an important interview for detectives.
26:14Someone from Nikolai's group, shocked and disgusted by his actions that day.
26:19Not only has everyone who witnessed the scene that day painted him out to be a monster,
26:23but his own co-worker has too.
26:26Police now have a mountain of evidence against Nikolai, but decide to talk to one final person,
26:32Larion, who reveals what actually happened leading up to the stabbing.
26:36Is there anything else you can think of about, um, you know, what you saw?
26:41Like, you know, some things that would be important to us is like, you know, like, uh,
26:46if you saw who pushed the guy, if you saw anyone else with a knife, if you saw anything like that.
26:51Well, the, the, one of the boys who got stabbed, he was telling us that the dude, he was on,
26:59came up to them and asked them for, like, pictures, like, um, explicit pictures.
27:04And, and I'm like, I'm like, what?
27:07Did y'all got the fighting?
27:09I guess they got the fighting.
27:10He said, yeah, then he got the stabbing them.
27:12So.
27:13And he asked him for, or this is one of the guy who's got, actually got stabbed?
27:17Yeah, he got stabbed, he said that he, that's why, that's what happened.
27:21The dude was asking them for explicit pictures of the girls that they was with.
27:25So, I guess from there, he was like, oh, what you doing?
27:30They got into an altercation.
27:32They must have put their hands on him and then he retaliated by, by slashing them.
27:37This claim backs up why he was being called a p-file on the phone recording.
27:41If this is true, then the story makes a whole lot more sense.
27:45Nikolai approached the females, asking for explicit photos.
27:49The females being mostly underage, declined and Maddie confronted Nikolai on the matter,
27:54potentially putting her hands on him in the process.
27:56That's when he punched Maddie in the face and all hell broke loose.
28:00A man then punched Nikolai, knocking him down, prompting him to stab anyone who tried to approach him again.
28:06A common opinion stated in unrecorded interviews was that Nikolai allegedly thought the teens on the tubes
28:12stole his missing phone, which prompted him to attack the teens.
28:16This is largely confirmed in the phone recording as well,
28:18as we can see Nikolai searching around the area and pushing the group's tubes around.
28:22Detectives would go on to interview countless more witnesses, all with the same general story.
28:27Nikolai harassed the group of teens and when confronted, went on a cold-blooded rampage.
28:32But still, people lie.
28:34Those who were friends with anyone injured at the scene would obviously remain biased towards
28:39the side against Nikolai, and could keep out any information that didn't get caught on the phone recording.
28:44So, with that, they sit Nikolai himself down and prepare to confront Nikolai on the piles of evidence
28:50they've rigged up against him, and determine whether or not all of these stories are true.
28:54And I understand you're married to Sandy.
28:57Yeah.
28:57Okay.
28:58Is she okay?
28:59She is.
29:00Yeah.
29:00I did talk to her.
29:01I talked to her for quite a while.
29:03I brought her to get her dry clothes.
29:05Where is she?
29:06She is with Ernesto and Amy.
29:09Amy.
29:10My puppy.
29:11She's headed home to take care of the dog.
29:13So, I would like to ask you questions about your day today.
29:16What happened, you know, like how you guys got to be in the Apple River today, and then like
29:20what your day was like.
29:21All I can say, it was self-defense.
29:27Self-defense are a lot of people alive that came on to me.
29:30Self-defense when they produced two weapons, one I took from them.
29:33This would be the start of Nikolai's string of lies during this interview.
29:38Nikolai did bring the knife he used to stab the victims.
29:41He brought it specifically so he could cut rope while on the river.
29:44After the stabbings, Nikolai threw the knife into the river, which was later retrieved.
29:49That's the only thing I can do.
29:50And they were, they hit me, and they were on top of me, and that's, I don't remember
29:55anything after that.
29:57I just remember I ran away.
29:58I ran away to my, to my group.
30:01There were actually people coming over from my group to see what was going on.
30:05I said, nothing, nothing, nothing.
30:07Just give back.
30:07And they kept asking, and I said, nothing, nothing.
30:10I didn't explain to them anything because I was, I was, I was so fearful.
30:14I didn't know what these people were doing to us.
30:17I've never been in a situation like this, where people produce weapons.
30:21and they were saying, calling, don't, I don't remember, but they said, don't run over, don't
30:31run from us.
30:32Don't do this.
30:32You're a a a*****, you're a a*****, you're a this.
30:34and he said, people drunk, or you're a a*****.
30:39I said, the only thing I remember in my mind is, if I'm a a*****, should you be drinking?
30:46Should you be drinking alcohol and, and doing what you're doing to people that you don't
30:51even know, attacking them?
30:53And I said, if I'm a a*****, you should be having alcohol.
30:58You know, and, and they took my, I was snorkeling, so they took my snorkeling away, they threw
31:05it in the water, they grabbed my pants, one wanted to put my pants down, and I grabbed
31:10onto him, and I don't know who that kid was, but he produced, he had a knife on him, and
31:17then there was another knife, a longer knife, that looked like a kitchen knife.
31:21This is true.
31:22There was, in fact, an additional knife at the scene.
31:25It's unclear if that knife was pulled out at any point during the altercation, but at
31:28no point was the knife used to stab anyone.
31:31And I don't know why I have to treat one of them, I just know that I, I, when, when,
31:35when the kid attacked me, I took that from him.
31:37The kitchen knife or the other?
31:38No, the smaller knife.
31:40Okay, what did that knife look like?
31:41Do you remember?
31:42I don't even remember.
31:43But it was smaller?
31:44Smaller, yes.
31:47So, that's all I have.
31:49How did you get to be by them?
31:50Who are these people?
31:51So, I have lost his phone.
31:53Okay.
31:54The phone was in the floor.
31:55One of those bags?
31:56Yeah, yeah, yeah.
31:57And everyone had one, but his phone was in the floor, so he says, well, let's go look
32:01for it.
32:02So, I put my snorkel on, and I looked, and this guy found something, and they were talking
32:06about it, and I said, okay.
32:07This group of people?
32:08This group of people, yeah.
32:10I went over, and I said, did you guys find the phone?
32:13And if you did, can I see it?
32:15Can I identify it?
32:16And they started calling me names.
32:18They got off of their tubes.
32:19They came at me.
32:20So, I said, oh, my name.
32:21And they were calling me all kinds of names, insulting me for being in the water with a
32:28snorkel.
32:29And I said, all I want, guys, did you find the phone?
32:33And I thought they had, they had found something.
32:36It seems rather ridiculous that Nick would be called such specific things, if he confronted
32:41them as kindly as he says he did.
32:42It's very clear he's leaving something out of his story.
32:46Keep in mind, at this point, Nick has no idea the entire altercation was recorded, so
32:50he likely thinks these stories, being completely innocent, seem plausible.
32:54And we were looking desperately to find this phone.
32:57And I know somebody found it, but I thought it was that group.
33:00They came to me, and they grabbed my snorkel, and they threw it in the water.
33:04Well, the water was so fast, it went under.
33:07So, I went out after it, and they started, another group of mostly girls came over from
33:13the other side, yelling at me or calling me, and something like that.
33:18Again, another flat-out lie.
33:28The phone recording clearly shows Nick was the initial aggressor, when he started pushing
33:31the teens off their tubes.
33:33I just know that they attacked me, and I was in self-defense.
33:37I went into self-defense mode, and then I went over to my group of people.
33:41That was it.
33:42And they asked me what happened, and I wouldn't tell them.
33:44I said, I can't tell you.
33:47Let me calm down.
33:49I was shocked, so nobody on that knew exactly what happened.
33:53The only thing they said was, you know if somebody got in an argument over there, like,
33:59I said, yep, let's just, let's just, leave that alone, don't go there.
34:05And I said, did you guys find something?
34:07And I thought they did.
34:09And I know they did, because they were hiding something from me.
34:13And then I went over there, and they grabbed my snorkel, and threw it down.
34:16They started, they got out their tubes.
34:19They came after me, they pushed me.
34:21One of them hit me, and then there was a girl that came from here and hit me in the back
34:25of my head.
34:26And I was about right there.
34:28You said right here?
34:29When she hit me, yeah.
34:31And that's when the female hit you?
34:33Yeah.
34:34I mean, I cared for my life.
34:36To tell you the truth, when they started hitting me, and pointed a knife at me, and then another
34:42kid pointed a knife, I thought that was it for me.
34:45Luckily, I took it from one of the young kids, and I think that's when I found back.
34:51What did you do with it?
34:53I don't even know.
34:54Okay.
34:54I don't know.
34:55Absolutely, I don't know.
34:56Nikolai's defense becomes extremely hard to believe when he constantly lies about the
35:00incident.
35:01Again, the knife used was his.
35:03He did not take it from anyone, he pulled it from his own pocket, and used it to stab five
35:08people.
35:08He threw it into the lake in the hopes he could cover the incident up completely.
35:12Proof of this is in his talks with police while being arrested, where he pretended he
35:16wasn't even near the scene of the crime.
35:18I don't know if he got it back.
35:20I have absolutely no idea.
35:21Did you hit him?
35:22Like, did the knife make contact with him?
35:24That I don't remember.
35:25You were so close.
35:27And one had it in his hand, so I took his hand, and I bent it, and I poked him with his
35:32own hand.
35:33And then I took it from his hand, and then I went and swung like this.
35:37So I don't know who I hit.
35:39I just know that I took the knife from one of the kids.
35:43The other one, I don't know what happened to him.
35:45I didn't get hit.
35:48Did you have a knife?
35:49No, no, absolutely.
35:50Okay.
35:51But you have a knife today, right?
35:53The what?
35:54A knife.
35:55How did that?
35:56I think it's in my car.
35:57Okay.
35:58Yeah.
35:59Did you drive or did Sandy drive?
36:00I did.
36:01Okay.
36:01Yeah.
36:02Okay.
36:04I don't even know where it's at, the literature.
36:07It may be in one of the bags we had with us.
36:10It may have been in, I don't know.
36:13Maybe I left it, put it back in the car.
36:16Because I went back with a bunch of, I had straps.
36:20I didn't want to pay for a string.
36:22But they said, string is cheap.
36:23They don't want you to have straps.
36:25They told me, they said, yeah, if you have straps, there was a kid over there.
36:28If you have straps, no problem.
36:29But the string is free.
36:31So I said, okay, I'll take the string.
36:32Okay.
36:32And then I took the straps back.
36:34So, because straps can puncture them.
36:37Yeah.
36:38So I took, I had a whole bag of straps that I took back to my car.
36:42Okay.
36:42And so maybe the knife was with the straps?
36:45Uh, probably.
36:50Did you have any cuts or marks on you?
36:53Have you had a chance to like look at your torso or?
36:56Yeah.
36:56Somebody was telling me that I'm bleeding from my ear, from my left ear.
36:59Who told you that?
37:00Oh, I think it was Amy.
37:04They said, Nick, you're bleeding from your left ear.
37:07I'm on my left ear, I'm in the water, I clean.
37:09I don't see any.
37:12I really, I don't know if you see any cuts, but I don't know.
37:14I don't.
37:15Yeah.
37:15I don't know where that, why I was bleeding from my ear.
37:18This is a smart tactic used by the detective.
37:20By getting Nick to confirm he had no injuries, the prosecution can use this as evidence to rule out self-defense.
37:26Nick claims Amy told him his ear was bleeding, but says himself that he didn't notice any blood.
37:32In addition, it takes him seconds to recall who told him his ear was bleeding, meaning he could have just made this scenario up altogether.
37:39Um, but Amy saw blood?
37:45I think she says you're bleeding from your ear, Nick.
37:51And then I cleaned and I said, look, there is nothing.
37:55Oh, okay.
37:56Okay.
37:56Yeah.
37:57Yeah, I don't know if it was blood or if it was weeds.
38:00She saw, I have no idea.
38:02We were like, she was on the other side and I was just.
38:06Yeah, so she's over here, right?
38:08She's over here, yeah, right here.
38:09Oh, so she's close, Amy's over here, close to the store?
38:12Yeah.
38:12Okay.
38:13Well, then that's over right here.
38:15And I was over here somewhere in one of these.
38:18Okay, and you got back in that tube then?
38:20Yeah, I got back in my own tube, yes.
38:23Okay.
38:23Notice how Nick feels the need to provide a detailed description on this claim from Amy, but not for anything else.
38:29This is a common defense mechanism used by someone lying.
38:32When they feel as though their claims aren't being taken as truth, they try and depict the scenario in as much detail as possible to make it seem more authentic.
38:39Okay, so you took the smaller knife from one of them.
38:43And is that the one that you said that you kind of went?
38:45Yes.
38:45Oh, I was going like this.
38:48I want it out.
38:49They were coming and they were punching me and they were circling me and they came really close.
38:55They were pushing me in the water.
38:56I didn't even know if I was holding it right.
38:58I just grabbed it from him because he tried to poke me with it.
39:01I feared for my life.
39:02Sounds like it.
39:03I was very shocked.
39:04I was extremely shocked.
39:06Is this you?
39:07Yes.
39:08What do you think was happening at that time?
39:10They were fighting me.
39:12They pointed the knife at me.
39:13They pointed the knife at me.
39:14Nick thinks this photo will actually help his case, but he's in for a rude awakening.
39:19Did you see anyone take this picture of you?
39:21No.
39:22God, no.
39:22I was actually very, very scared.
39:26I was very scared.
39:27I didn't know what to think.
39:28I didn't know what they were doing.
39:29I mean, why?
39:30I mean, I understand they were drunk, but you get drunk, I get drunk.
39:35We all get drunk.
39:35We don't do that kind of stuff, especially on a family outing.
39:41We don't do that kind of stuff.
39:42I was very, you see, I was very, very scared.
39:45I didn't know what was going to happen next.
39:48So what happened?
39:49Can you tell me what happened?
39:52Yes.
39:57Four people went to the hospital with injuries.
39:59Oh, my God.
40:00And one person died.
40:02Oh, no.
40:03Not a very remorseful reaction for someone who's just learned he killed someone and injured
40:09for others.
40:09It's almost like he fully knew that he critically injured multiple people.
40:14I don't know any of their names, and I don't know any genders.
40:17So I don't know.
40:17Was that because they fought each other, or is that the...
40:20I don't know.
40:21I don't know what their injuries are.
40:22I just, I was with Sandy the whole time, and then when I kind of turned Sandy over to
40:27Ernesto and Amy, then I came here.
40:29So I have no idea what their injuries were.
40:31Oh, my God.
40:42What other pictures did they give you?
40:44It's just that one.
40:45That's the only one I have.
40:46No, my whole life is down the tubes.
40:51Well, I don't know if that's the case.
40:54Because people have the right to defend themselves.
40:55I know, but this is Wisconsin.
40:58This is Wisconsin.
41:00Okay.
41:02We continue on.
41:03I usually know that people that defend themselves, they end up being accused of being this and
41:11being that.
41:15Well, I think if you'd asked me what I would have done, I don't know.
41:19Yeah, you don't know.
41:20I don't know.
41:20I would have been scared shitless, I can tell you that.
41:22You want that many people that try to pull your pants down and hit you, and yeah.
41:27And two boys had knives on them.
41:31They didn't find any of those two knives?
41:33I don't know.
41:34I don't know.
41:35But we're looking.
41:35And, you know, we're looking before it gets dark out.
41:40I'm glad I actually took that kid's knife.
41:42He would have stabbed me.
41:44He was not there to scare me.
41:46He was there to harm me.
41:47Again, notice how every time a knife gets brought up,
41:50Nick feels the need to elaborately explain that he took the knife,
41:54and whoever had it was trying to hurt him.
41:56This is all a deflection tactic to try and make his lie seem less suspicious.
42:00Nick would take blood vitals, and the interview would conclude.
42:03But notice his difference in tone between the start and the end of the interrogation.
42:07Clearly, he feels like something went wrong,
42:10and those emotions would carry directly into his trial,
42:13which would go on for nearly two weeks.
42:15The trial began with opening statements,
42:17followed by witness testimonies from those present at the crime.
42:20These were a complete mess,
42:23and honestly made the prosecution's story seem a whole lot less credible.
42:27Take Larion, for example,
42:28who told a completely different story from what he told officers during his police interview.
42:32So what you've provided to the state in terms of what you say you observed,
42:36there's much more than that.
42:38True?
42:40Yes.
42:40So you give two statements,
42:42one about 11 days after the incident, 12 days,
42:45and one 21 months after the incident.
42:48Which memory, in terms of the dates when you give those statements,
42:52is one better than the other?
42:53If I said to you,
42:54memory's normally better closer in time to an event,
42:57would you agree with that?
42:58Yes.
42:58I remember he had a hat on.
43:01He looked like he wasn't supposed to be in the water.
43:04Like he just came out of,
43:06he came out of the bushes.
43:08Do you remember that?
43:09Yeah.
43:10So is it your testimony today,
43:12under oath,
43:13that the person involved in this incident
43:15had a hat on
43:16and came out of the bushes?
43:18No.
43:19You told the police...
43:20I told them that yes,
43:22but I don't,
43:23but I don't,
43:24like you said,
43:25it could be foggy.
43:26I don't think that's what it was no more though.
43:28Were you intentionally lying to the police?
43:31No.
43:31This is the interview the lawyer is referring to.
43:34The guy with the knife,
43:36do you recall what he looked like?
43:37Not too heavy set,
43:38but he was like an older man.
43:40He was an older man.
43:41I can't really remember,
43:42like with his hair or anything,
43:44because I'll just be making something up.
43:46I don't really remember,
43:47but I remember he had a hat on.
43:49Yeah.
43:50He looked like he wasn't supposed to be in the water.
43:52Like he just came out of the,
43:54he came out of the bushes.
43:56Next thing you know,
43:57he get to walk it in the water,
44:00and they,
44:00they,
44:00they,
44:00they like,
44:01they like they was finna fight or something.
44:03The dude,
44:03the dude in the water swung on him,
44:06and he pulled out the knife
44:07and get to stabbing him.
44:09Obvious lies like this
44:10work against the purpose
44:11of his witness testimony,
44:13and make everything
44:13the prosecution says less credible.
44:15Generally speaking,
44:17this goes to show
44:17how unreliable witness statements can be.
44:20Lerion's recollection of Nick's appearance
44:21wasn't even remotely close,
44:23yet he was fully confident in those claims.
44:26Besides Lerion getting outed,
44:28the witness testimonies clearly showed the jury,
44:30all the evidence shown so far in this video,
44:33and every factual piece of evidence
44:35that could be used against Nick.
44:37They claimed the teen's actions towards Nick
44:39did not justify the use of deadly force
44:41and should not be considered as self-defense.
44:44To further prove this,
44:45they presented autopsy reports
44:47showcasing just how severe
44:48some of the injuries inflicted by Nick
44:50actually were.
44:51Did you complete an internal examination
44:53of Isaac's body?
44:54Yes.
44:55Can you summarize the results
44:56of your internal examination
44:57of Isaac's body?
44:59Sure.
45:00As I said,
45:02I observed,
45:03most important,
45:04I observed Sharpe's injury
45:06to his left chest.
45:07Later,
45:08I classified this wound
45:10as a stab wound.
45:11So it was stab wound
45:12to the left chest,
45:13the stab wound penetrated
45:14to his left chest cavity,
45:16then wound kind of continues
45:19and go to the left lung.
45:21He had blood in his left chest cavity.
45:24I recovered 200 cubic centimeters.
45:27It's approximately glass of the blood.
45:29This would wrap up the prosecution's case
45:31and allow for Nick to take the stand.
45:34Nick would detail essentially
45:35the same story as in his interview,
45:38claiming that he was searching
45:38for a lost cell phone in the river
45:40when he was confronted
45:41by a group of people.
45:42He felt threatened
45:43and panicked
45:44when they surrounded him,
45:45leading him to use the knife
45:46in self-defense.
45:48The jury deliberations
45:49would begin on July 20th, 2023,
45:52and on July 21st,
45:53they would return
45:54a unanimous verdict,
45:56finding Nikolai guilty
45:57of first-degree intentional homicide
46:00with four counts
46:01of attempted
46:02first-degree intentional homicide.
46:04Nikolai had lost.
46:06This result was met
46:07with mixed reactions
46:08from the public.
46:09On one hand,
46:10it was clear
46:11that Nick's actions
46:12were extreme,
46:13and it was certainly
46:13not necessary
46:14to use that degree
46:15of force against the teens.
46:17However,
46:18he was ganged up on
46:1913 to 1 precisely.
46:21In the moment,
46:22many felt his response
46:23was justified,
46:24and the teens put him
46:25in a scenario
46:26to fight for his life.
46:27On the contrary,
46:28those who watched
46:29all the evidence in court,
46:30aka all the footage
46:32shown in this video,
46:33realized Nikolai
46:34was lying through his teeth
46:35the entire time,
46:36and clearly felt
46:37he was guilty
46:38to some degree.
46:39However,
46:40public opinion
46:41is irrelevant
46:41in the court of law,
46:43and the jury
46:43gets the final say,
46:45determining he was
46:46a cold-blooded killer.
46:48The day of July 30, 2022,
46:51Nikolai would be sentenced
46:52shortly after
46:53to life in prison.
46:55This was his raw reaction.
46:58Taking life
46:59and endangering
46:59the lives of others
47:00are two crimes
47:01that warrant
47:02significant punishment.
47:03For count one,
47:04I will impose
47:05a term of initial confinement
47:06of 20 years,
47:08followed by six years
47:09of extended supervision,
47:10five years initial confinement,
47:12followed by five years
47:12of extended supervision,
47:14five years of initial confinement,
47:15followed by five years
47:16of extended supervision,
47:17six years of initial confinement,
47:19followed by five years
47:20of extended supervision.
47:21Count six,
47:22Madison Cohen,
47:23270 days of jail.
