00:00Good evening and welcome to Kentonite live here on KMTV.
00:29I'm Gabriel Morris. Hope you've been enjoying your bank holiday Monday.
00:33Well, here are your top stories for the 25th of August.
00:38Frustrated. Stroke survivor slams Swale Borough Council over two-year housing weight.
00:45Drone zone. Home office aircraft catches fire on M20 near Folkestone.
00:51And bank holiday, Bodanza. We've been to Taggarton to find out how you've been spending the day.
00:59The first disabled stroke survivor says Swale Borough Council has left her feeling let down after two years on the waiting list for an accessible home.
01:1063-year-old Debbie Law lives in a caravan on Sheppey with her husband Alan, who has to lift her in and out because there's no ramp or space for a wheelchair.
01:19The couple say they've been told 30 families are ahead of them, despite being in the council's top housing band.
01:27Swale Borough Council says their following policy and demand for homes is high.
01:31Well, let's hear from Debbie's husband, Alan, now.
01:33I can't work because I'm caring for my wife. It's getting her in and out of the caravan. We're in the caravan.
01:39It's getting her in and out of the caravan. And the only way I can move her around in the caravan is by a commode,
01:47which is the only thing that'll go through the doorways. Wheelchair won't come in here.
01:53And the council, first of all, when she first had the stroke, said the caravan wasn't fit.
02:02And now they don't seem to be bothered about her in the caravan.
02:08Because we're a couple, they've allowed us to bid on one-bedroom properties only,
02:14which isn't ideal because the amount of equipment she actually needs to move around and physio to get her back on her feet,
02:27you can't get in the caravan.
02:30And you can read more about that story on Kent Online and this next one here,
02:34as dashcam footage shows the moment a van driver ploughed into biker Mark White on the A249 near Stockbury a couple of years ago.
02:43The 53-year-old suffered multiple fractures and collapsed lung, which he says has changed his life forever.
02:50But a driver, 70-year-old Anthony Gilliam, who was driving the van you can see on the screen now,
02:54didn't stop, leaving Mark in a ditch.
02:57Now, the police found the damaged van a week later,
03:01and Gilliam admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to stop.
03:06He's been sent to prison for 22 months and banned for driving for nearly five years.
03:10Now, firefighters were called to the M20 westbound between Folkestone and Cheriton
03:16after a home office drone caught fire whilst being transported on a vehicle.
03:21The fire service says the small remote-controlled aircraft was quickly extinguished
03:24and hose-reeled jets with hose-reeled jets and no-one was hurt.
03:29The drone is used for maritime surveillance, tracking illegal vessels in the channel
03:32and providing real-time intelligence to authorities.
03:35Traffic returned to normal by 3pm yesterday and the home office has been contacted for comment.
03:40Well, today, it's Bank Holiday Monday, and for most of us, they've been celebrating.
03:48Lucky for some of us who still have to work like us here.
03:51But did you know that the historical origins of the holiday suggest
03:54it should be more like how we celebrate Christmas?
03:57Well, we sent our reporter, Finn with her, down to Tangerton Beach to find out more.
04:02People of Kent, something is dreadfully wrong.
04:04It's Bank Holiday Monday here in the United Kingdom, but it's very sunny.
04:09It's about 23 degrees here at Tangerton Beach.
04:12And you might be thinking that this couldn't be better luck for everyone enjoying their nice holiday.
04:16But I'm here to tell you that it's actually the opposite.
04:20And for that, we'll need a little history.
04:22Now, the first official bank holidays were named in the Bank Holidays Act of 1871,
04:28introduced by a politician and banker named Sir John Lubbock.
04:31And now, under the Act, no person was compelled to make any payment or do any act upon a bank holiday,
04:37which you would not be compelled to do or make on Christmas Day.
04:40And the making of an act on the following day was equivalent to doing it on that holiday.
04:44And what that basically means is you should be spending your bank holidays by the letter
04:48doing as little as possible.
04:51And I've been here on Tangerton Beach, and I have to say, I'm frankly a little bit disappointed
04:55because I've seen people doing all manner of activities.
04:58They're doing things. They're being active.
05:00I've seen people cycling, paddle boarding.
05:03I even saw one family playing rugby, which I think goes against the spirit of the bank holidays.
05:08And you might be willing to call me a bit of a bank holiday grinch,
05:10but I'm here to correct people on how they should actually be spending their bank holiday.
05:15So I've been walking up and down the beach bothering people
05:17and telling them what they could be doing instead.
05:19How good do you guys think you are going to be today at doing nothing?
05:23It sounds like you've been quite active. Tell me about it.
05:24Zero.
05:26You're going to be really bad at doing zero, are you?
05:28So that means you're going to get me up and about, are you?
05:30I don't like that idea.
05:31If we can get away with zero, we will.
05:33I think we will.
05:34I'm probably not that inclined to even venture out on a bank holiday normally,
05:39but on this occasion we've been persuaded to give it a go.
05:43Well, we're just coming to the beach, relaxing, we've brought a kayak,
05:48we're going to play some rugby, stuff like that.
05:51How well do you guys think you are at doing absolutely nothing?
05:55Really good, yeah.
05:57We like to relax, don't we?
05:59We do like to relax.
06:00We just had a week away and we really enjoyed that and we did virtually nothing.
06:05So it's nice when you get an opportunity to relax.
06:08It takes a lot of effort to do nothing, I've realised in fact.
06:10You've got to rave the traffic, find a parking spot and set up your spot on the beach
06:14with your umbrellas, your kayaks, your towels and everything.
06:18And of course I realise I am a bit of a hypocrite when it comes to this
06:22as I am in fact working.
06:24So really, however you do spend your nice summer Monday bank holiday
06:29with this rare nice weather is up to you.
06:31And I especially can't say anything since this whole time
06:34I've been enjoying the nice cool sea.
06:36Finn McDermid for KMTV here in Tankleton.
06:40Well, as this bank holiday comes to an end,
06:42eyes are already turning to the next in Kent.
06:44Christmas Day, just 122 days away now.
06:48Ashford Designer Outlet is doubling its festive market this year
06:52after a successful debut last Christmas.
06:54The mission has been granted to expand from nine stalls to 21,
06:58running from November 1st to January 1st.
07:00The extra stalls will be near Wagamama,
07:02selling decorations, food and drink.
07:05Well, the centre believes the expansion will create a season
07:07and attraction for shoppers and the local community
07:10with hopes it could run under a five-year contract until 2029.
07:15Now let's have a look at the weather for the coming days.
07:18Well, going into tonight, bringing clear skies with low wind speeds
07:27around temperatures around the mid-teens.
07:29Into tomorrow morning, temperatures around 19 degrees,
07:3120 in the east with clouds scattered across the sky
07:34and winds picking up.
07:36Into the afternoon, the sun coming out in the south
07:38with temperatures reaching 24 degrees in Medway and Dartford,
07:41elsewhere 23.
07:42Now for your outlook, highs are 22 on Wednesday and Thursday
07:46with partly cloudy weather expected,
07:48with some light showers expected on Friday
07:50as highs drop to 21 degrees.
07:52Well, there's plenty of sports news across the county
08:02after this weekend with England women's rugby side
08:06storming through the World Cup
08:07with a decisive victory against the USA
08:09and we'll have all the latest football news from across Kent
08:12and joining me to discuss all of this is our sports reporter,
08:15Finn McDermid.
08:16Weekend of action then, Finn.
08:18Start with rugby, shall we?
08:19Yep, absolutely.
08:20Big, big news about rugby, obviously.
08:23Excitement building across the country, across the county
08:25and nowhere more than Medway RFC.
08:28They love their rugby as the Women's Rugby World Cup,
08:31of course, has kicked off.
08:33England faced off against the United States.
08:35That was up in Sunderland at the football club Stadium of Light.
08:39Hopefully their first step towards, you know,
08:41fingers crossed were them winning the trophy once again.
08:44They also managed to win against France back in April.
08:48That was a change, a slight change from their decisive victory
08:52against the States, which was 69-7.
08:54They only narrowly managed to beat France 43-42.
08:58But Medway is very proud of their role in the women's game.
09:02The club has the country's largest girls section
09:04with more than 100 players
09:06and we actually spoke to some of those young stars at the club
09:08like Olivia Collins,
09:10who are dreaming of becoming big names in the sport.
09:13Yeah, definitely a lot.
09:14So, like, when I started,
09:15there was barely any rugby girls team.
09:18It was under-15s I started.
09:20So, yeah, I had to travel to Medway for that.
09:23But now, like, there's loads of teams available.
09:27When we play league games and stuff,
09:29we've got loads of teams.
09:30We travel all around to play games.
09:32So it has definitely grown.
09:34I think through, like, people watching rugby
09:37and watching more games and obviously the role models
09:39of international players,
09:41more girls are picking up rugby and joining in.
09:46Talk about Invicta,
09:47which is coming up after this in a moment.
09:49But what about football?
09:50What can you tell us on that?
09:51Gilles fans, you must be very,
09:53very pleased with yourselves.
09:54Gillingham won against Crew Alexandra,
09:56a strong team.
09:57They are currently top of the table
09:59and a win against them puts Gillingham in fifth.
10:02Only a point from the top, though,
10:03as it is still quite early on in the season.
10:06Three wins, two draws and no losses.
10:09That's right.
10:09Gillingham have been undefeated in their last 17 games.
10:12This is their longest run since 1999.
10:16And it's approaching their record of 20 unbeaten games,
10:19which happened back in 1974.
10:22We can actually hear very briefly now
10:24from the manager, Gareth Ainsworth.
10:25Yeah, I'm really proud again, you know.
10:29The boys have emptied everything out.
10:31They've left nothing on the pitch.
10:33They've played the squad game today.
10:38Listen, Crew are a good side.
10:39They've had some good chances today
10:40and it was a really, really ding-dong game, you know.
10:42Especially first half, I thought
10:44we made some slight tweaks at half-time,
10:46which I thought were good
10:48because we were definitely the aggressors in the second half.
10:50I know they've had one hit the bar.
10:53It's a worldie from distance, you know,
10:54and that's fair enough.
10:56And I think they had a cross that almost sneaked in,
10:59but Sam Gales cleared it off the line,
11:01which is great.
11:01But at the other end, we had just as many, you know.
11:03We had, I think we hit the bar
11:05and Rose flashed a couple of crosses.
11:08It's crosses.
11:08Bradley Dax had one off the line, you know.
11:10So, real, real good game.
11:12Not much in it at all.
11:13And, of course, Invictus Sport straight after the show.
11:17Absolutely.
11:17We'll be taking a long,
11:19we'll be doing a long interview story with Alan Knott.
11:22He's part of the Tug of War Association.
11:24Back earlier in the summer, we saw them,
11:26we had a, went down to their national competition,
11:29which is held in Tunbridge.
11:30And we'll be doing a long chat about his origins in the sport
11:33and really just about where it's going next.
11:36It's a very old sport
11:37and we love to see how they're going to
11:39put on the World Championships coming up soon.
11:41Finn, thank you for bringing us those details.
11:43Well, stay tuned on this channel for Invictus Sport,
11:45which is coming up very shortly.
11:46But enjoy the rest of your bank holiday
11:47from me and the rest of the team.
11:49Goodbye.
