00:00Gold was the magic word that sent hundreds, then thousands of men, swarming into the vast territory of California.
00:18The lust for gold soon became a raging fever that brought death to conscience and honor.
00:24Fear and violence spread throughout the land. Those who tried to enforce the law were destroyed, as were many of the innocent.
00:34The courts were powerless to keep order, and the guilty went unpunished.
00:40Mob rule reigned, and the times were ripe for those who would control at any cost.
00:54I say we've got to stop all this violence, murders, robberies.
01:01Why, it's getting so a man's got to sleep with a gun under his pillow.
01:04What else do you expect?
01:05Right, and you're going to keep on having violence until California joins the union.
01:09Yeah, when's that going to be?
01:10We've been here not for months.
01:12Congress adjourned before taking action.
01:13Oh, it takes time, that takes time.
01:15But this territory's going to be a state, now you'll see.
01:18We'll petition Governor Mason at Monterey. We'll tell him to call that constitution meeting or else.
01:23That's the ticket. Cummings is right.
01:25I've got a better idea.
01:28Why don't we send friend Cummings to Washington? He'll build a fire under those senators.
01:32Now that's talking.
01:33Now we're getting some. Cummings is our man.
01:35Now, Jan, you know I can't go no place. Me and the missus got to get the crops in.
01:39Politics is more important than crops.
01:41You tell that to Mrs. Cummings.
01:43You riding my way, Jan?
01:44I have a lot of shopping to do for Mary.
01:46She gave me a list a yard long.
01:48See you later, neighbor.
01:49Hey, Congress got an idea that we don't know anything down here.
01:53Statehood's the only answer, man.
01:55I think you're coming.
02:16What's the idea?
02:19I ain't got no money.
02:22Guess not, Cummings.
02:23Seems how you forgot to pay your mortgage installment.
02:25Installment?
02:27I didn't take out any mortgage.
02:29You've been so busy talking politics, you must have forgot.
02:32That farm of yours is now owned by the Sierra Land Corporation.
02:35No. No, it ain't.
02:38That says different here.
02:39Now all you have to do is sign the deed, move...
02:41I won't do it.
02:42You'd better think it over.
02:51Now, if I do sign it, what then?
02:54I will let you get back to your farm.
03:24Mary?
03:32Mary?
03:52Mary?
03:57Is that you, Jim?
03:59Been expecting somebody else?
04:02Well, I'm so crazy about my own husband.
04:09Just for that, you get a present.
04:11I do?
04:12What, is it in there?
04:14Come into the drawing room and receive it properly.
04:24Mrs. Morell, oblige me by accepting this humble gift from your devoted spouse.
04:29I'd be pleased to accept, kind sir. Thank you.
04:34Oh.
04:35Oh, it's beautiful.
04:40But wasn't it awfully expensive?
04:43Kind of.
04:45Oh.
04:45I'll wear it as long as I live.
04:53I'll make up the cost, darling. I'll squeeze every penny until it hollers.
04:56If that stream out there keeps paying off, we won't have to scrimp anymore.
05:00I've got another surprise.
05:01It's a letter from Uncle Ned.
05:03Oh.
05:03It says he's located some mighty nice farming land up in Napa Valley.
05:07Do you think we could leave soon?
05:10A couple of more halls like this, and we'll be all set.
05:13Our own farm.
05:14Oh, Jim.
05:15I'm sorry to miss it here.
05:22The river's been good to us.
05:24You and Frank have worked like dogs for every speck of gold you've got.
05:27No nuggets the size of walnuts came your way.
05:31Frank's still at it?
05:32Go hustle him up. Stuff is about ready.
05:34I'll be right back.
06:04What do you want?
06:07Maybe we stopped in for supper.
06:10Who are you? Why are you here?
06:12You're not very hospitable, ma'am.
06:14Get out.
06:15Don't start to scream.
06:19Where's the gold?
06:21What gold?
06:22We heard you two talking. Where is it?
06:24That's all there is.
06:25You want me to slap your pretty face?
06:27Speak up!
06:32Get out of here, all of you!
06:33All right, boys, start looking.
06:37You're a regular spitfire, aren't you?
06:41Take her in there and shut her up.
06:47Hurry it up.
06:58Come on, Frank, supper's about ready.
07:00It's still daylight.
07:00We've got to keep putting in our legs or we'll never end up in that mansion on Knob Hill.
07:05A little farm's all I want.
07:07As you're young to settle down.
07:10One of these days, a nice girl will come along.
07:12You'll settle down.
07:13Go and wash up.
07:15Yeah, as soon as I clean up this riffle box.
07:17Hey, boys, look here.
07:34Yeah, buddy.
07:37Hey, boys, look here.
07:41Hey, boys, look here.
07:47This is more like it.
07:48Hey, that's quite a hole, huh, Clarky boy?
07:50Yeah.
07:54Figured them guys getting calluses on their pinkies digging this stuff.
08:05Pretty, ain't it?
08:07Hey, you didn't have to...
08:08Hey, get back.
08:11What about his claim?
08:31How's a dead man gonna prove it was his claim?
08:41Let's go.
08:56Hey!
08:59Chet!
09:20Chet!
09:20Chet!
09:21What happened?
09:31They cleaned us out.
09:38Who are those men?
09:40Mary.
09:40Mary.
09:41Mary.
10:03Mary.
10:04Mary.
10:04If it takes the rest of my life, I'll get every murdering one of them.
