TikTok has still not been unbanned in India — TechCrunch confirmed this. A brief website access sparked rumors of a comeback, but the truth is that the ban is still in place and has been for more than five years. 🙂

A TikTok spokesperson told TechCrunch that the Indian government’s ban directives remain effective, and the platform is not accessible in the country. They said: “We have not restored access to TikTok in India and continue to comply with the Government of India’s directive.”

A senior IT Ministry official also confirmed to TechCrunch, on condition of anonymity, that the government has neither unblocked the site nor taken any steps to revoke the ban. The ban was imposed under Section 69A of the IT Act.

Many Indian media outlets reported that TikTok was making a comeback because its website briefly opened for some users without a VPN.

Social media users began claiming the site was running, while in reality, since June 2020 the Indian government has blocked TikTok along with dozens of other Chinese apps citing national security concerns.

According to TechCrunch sources, this sudden reappearance appears to be a temporary technical glitch (a network-level misconfiguration).

A similar incident occurred in September 2022 when some internet service providers, while applying a patch, mistakenly unblocked TikTok and other restricted sites for a short period.

What’s surprising is that despite so many new platforms being available now, TikTok’s craze hasn’t gone down — people even started searching for the app on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. 😅

Meanwhile, meme-makers had a field day with this rumor...
