00:02:51We have three scenes that we're going to be working on of sex and nudity
00:02:57Things develop, what does that mean?

00:03:16Not knowing Kieran, I have a little trepidation about how receptive he's going to be to the work
00:03:25Sometimes it's really easy and you get there and they're like, oh yeah, yeah, open to everything
00:03:31And sometimes, you know, you have to kind of negotiate a little more
00:03:45I think a lot of people are a little resistant to intimacy coordination
00:03:48Because this is a new way of looking at something that's been done for years and years and years
00:03:54It occurred to me that there's never been a person there solely to coordinate and choreograph sex scenes
00:04:02And there was many times in my career I felt uncomfortable
00:04:06I'm like, I'm an old Hollywood broad, I know what I'm doing, you don't have to tell me how to make out on camera
00:04:12I didn't realize how unprotected we were
00:04:15We're having sex up against the bookshelf, as you do
00:04:19And we're in the middle of it and suddenly this voice just goes, Kiera, wank him off!
00:04:24Okay, no problem!
00:04:27I had a bottle of whiskey
00:04:29Because you forget, like when you're shooting, I was like, okay, I'm gonna get hammered for the sex scene

00:06:33I feel like I know conceptually what to expect
00:06:36But on the day it's gonna be very different
00:06:40You know, there's expectations and then there's a real thing
00:06:42And it's like wow
00:06:44It's gonna be uncomfortable
00:06:45I'm having to internally calm myself down
00:06:48Because I feel a little bit like
00:06:51What have I signed up to do?
00:06:54I told my mum and she's like you go and do it and I'll do the worrying
00:06:58And I was like sweet

00:07:17I'm the director of Tightrope
00:07:19There are three separate intimate moments in the film
00:07:23And we're in the process of setting up to shoot those
00:07:27And bringing Claire in and seeing how her process unfolds
00:07:30The very first sex scene that I ever directed was my first movie
00:07:36My wife and I co-wrote the movie and she starred in it alongside Joel Edgerton
00:07:41And there's one intimate scene in the film
00:07:46Not too much heavy stuff goes on but it's
00:07:51Nevertheless it's my best friend and my wife in bed together
00:07:55Okay

00:08:00And it was just so quiet that you couldn't hear a pin drop
00:08:05Joel disappeared under the sheets and my wife laid back

00:08:15And everybody just burst into laughter
00:08:17And I remember walking into the room and Joel was sitting there on the bed like that

00:09:01Had I not had a coordinator there
00:09:04I didn't know how much she would challenge what she was bringing to the process
00:09:07The way I offer the work that I do
00:09:10I bring a focus and a kind of expertise on the physical storytelling of simulated sex
00:09:15And the other part is it's about helping the crew understand the protocols that help to uphold our actors' consent
00:09:23What matters to me is me to understand your vision of this
00:09:28Yeah
00:09:29And then together we help
00:09:30Then how do we pull it off
00:09:31Yeah
00:09:32Let's chat a little bit then about the story and about these scenes
00:09:36The title tightrope came to me before anything else
00:09:39Mm
00:09:40I knew I wanted to explore risk taking within an existing relationship
00:09:46That's sort of grown stale for want of a better word
00:09:49I don't know I was maybe a two or three
00:09:52I am playing a character called Luke
00:09:54Who is a gentle, very gentle soul, gentle giant
00:10:00He's married to Scout
00:10:02And they're best friends and lovers
00:10:04Let's see
00:10:05They have been wanting to make a baby for a long time
00:10:08But it's not working
00:10:11So they decide to go away to a mansion that her boss owns
00:10:17To try and reinvigorate their sex life
00:10:19Yeah, I wouldn't want you to lose your job
00:10:21I have had trouble trying to conceive
00:10:26So I know what that's like
00:10:28Losing babies, grieving like that
00:10:31And then just wanting to throw caution to the wind
00:10:34And have a great time away with your long-term lover
00:10:39That's something that I'd really like to bring to the table
00:10:42With Scout and Luke's relationship
00:10:45Say the word gorgeous
00:10:48You know, early on, they're in the kitchen, they're drinking
00:10:51And Luke's sort of teasing or hassling her a little bit about her French-speaking skills
00:10:55And you know, it's just a cute little piece of dialogue that leads into an intimate moment
00:11:00Mon mari est superbe
00:11:03And then being really technical
00:11:05Are they still trying for children?
00:11:07And if so, do they not use birth control or condoms or anything?
00:11:10So we go straight into, like, penetrative sex without any
00:11:13Yeah
00:11:14Without showing condoms or anything

00:11:18So this next one we have is the morning after, right?

00:11:21It's post-sex
00:11:22Dude's lying around together and he's running his hands up and down her body
00:11:25And Scouts come up with a wacky idea to introduce a third party into this mix

00:11:33Because at the end, what's our last one?

00:11:36Her hands search out some fun

00:11:39So is that kind of the point where we think hand goes to penis
00:11:43And do we think, like, we'll kind of fade or cut out of that
00:11:46But it continues into, like, stimulation, masturbation
00:11:50She'll move down there and we'll just stay on his face
00:11:52And, you know, like...
00:11:54And he's almost, like, smiling to himself thinking, yeah, that's one way of talking me into it
00:11:58You know?

00:12:00So I'm imagining we're not going to get too much resistance from the cast, you know, with regard to those scenes
00:12:05But, you know, with the third scene

00:12:08Yeah, we're, um...
00:12:10You know, it's kind of a work in progress
00:12:12And you've probably never really done any
00:12:13The key points of the story, and tell me if I miss any
00:12:16Hired man comes into the house with them
00:12:20Scout is excited and quickly wants to engage with this man sexually
00:12:26We see Luke being reserved, but he eases his way into this scenario, whatever is actually happening
00:12:35Scout is getting carried away
00:12:37Billy dies
00:12:38Everyone freaks out
00:12:39Yeah
00:12:40Billy!
00:12:41Billy!
00:12:42The way it's been written up works
00:12:44And, um, you know, we've just got now...
00:12:46We've got to figure out what we can, you know, get our actors to agree to
00:12:51Mm-hmm
00:12:52I have a clear idea of, you know, what the story is, what our context is
00:12:57Maybe a good idea for me to have a conversation with the actors
00:13:00And then we'll come back together
00:13:01Sounds great to me
00:13:02Yeah
00:13:03I knew at the age of 12 that there was nothing else I could do in the world but be an actor
00:13:20And I did and I trained in London
00:13:23But even at 21 people were like, I don't know what to do with you, you're six foot tall
00:13:30So I was never picked for the roles that are marked by that kind of objectification
00:13:37But I could see it happening
00:13:40Someone sent me an article and said something like, have you heard about this thing called intimacy direction?
00:13:47It was just one of those moments where I was like, I would be really good at that
00:13:54That was six months before the Me Too movement
00:13:58We were hearing stories again and again of sex scenes and nude scenes that were uncomfortable
00:14:04Right up to traumatizing for people
00:14:06I'm on a film set completely naked
00:14:09I don't know what I'm meant to do and I don't know what's expected of me
00:14:12It wasn't that no one was speaking up about the bad way that this work was being done
00:14:18People in power weren't listening
00:14:20I did a scene where I was being strip searched completely naked for it
00:14:25And I had a huge panic attack which ended up in the show
00:14:29Because I had never felt so kind of dehumanized
00:14:36Then there was a global explosion of the Me Too movement
00:14:40And the world and the industry had to listen
00:14:46Kevin, can you be silent? No!
00:14:48Silent! Silent! Silent! Silent!
00:15:00So we made modifications to the male pouch
00:15:04Great!
00:15:05So it's flush with that scene
00:15:07Yeah, as flush to the padding as possible is good
00:15:11So the actor would put their penis and testicles into this pouch
00:15:15And then this sticks directly to the actor's body
00:15:19And you've had an idea of like having options of thickness?
00:15:25Yeah, I think it's, I think that's helpful because, you know, if you're having a scene of oral sex
00:15:29Some actors want a little more down there, someone's head's gonna be right there
00:15:33Part of what the barrier is for, especially for the garments for penises
00:15:38Is just to, like, reduce a little bit of that sensation
00:15:41So if it's tight to the body, it can contain a swelling or an erection a little better
00:15:47Costumers all have our intimacy kits on our trucks
00:15:53You know, nipple covers and the other strapless thongs that we've used that don't really work
00:15:59Before this, some actors would opt out of wearing anything that we provide
00:16:05And you're just like, it's not always for you, it's also for your partner in the scene
00:16:13Oftentimes, costumers and hair and makeup are the people that actors confide in
00:16:19Taylor and I were on a job
00:16:21I was covering the number one lead actress
00:16:24She had to have all these sex scenes
00:16:26There was no intimacy coordinator
00:16:28And she would come to me crying about how she didn't want to do it
00:16:32And then it got even worse
00:16:34She asked the props department at 8 in the morning for wine
00:16:38She could get drunk to do this scene
00:16:42The scene partner just didn't want to use a pad in between the two of them
00:16:46While she was sitting on top of him
00:16:47Yeah
00:16:48And we had the director saying things like, that looks sexy
00:16:51Like, put your leg up
00:16:53And was just like, directing the scene in such a way that, like, how could she not feel uncomfortable
00:16:59It's really nice to have intimacy coordinators who are there to make sure things like that don't happen
00:17:07I just hope it becomes an industry standard
00:17:10Kieran, we're just saying it'd be good for Sarah to put some underwear on
00:17:18Because when we do whatever action there is, there's the unbuttoning we'll see underneath
00:17:24And obviously, um, you'd like to have a bra on during...

00:19:17But I've experienced quite a lot recently where I've realised that it...

00:23:50I could always remember when you were about 12 or 13, we watched, I can't even remember what the film was
00:23:58And there was a sort of rape scene in it
00:24:02And I can remember you looking in huge indignation and saying, that's not making love, that's just using that woman

00:24:13No, I don't remember that either
00:24:14And I thought, ooh, we've done something right
00:24:18And I think more and more intimate scenes are being used more as part of the plot
00:24:25More than just an enticement to come and watch a saucy film
00:24:30That sounds very old-fashioned but you know what I mean
00:24:32No, sure, it's been 40 minutes and we haven't seen any boobs yet
00:24:35Yeah, yeah, yeah, bad film

00:24:39But then on the other hand, there are films where you have to portray that abuse
00:24:45And you have to portray what really goes on
00:24:48Right
00:24:49And that is harrowing
00:24:50I think what is reassuring is that the people who are playing those are being looked after now
00:24:55And that's why I'm enormously proud of what you're doing
00:24:59Not just because your career is succeeding
00:25:02But because you're actually doing something which is really worth doing for its own sake

00:25:21I do remember I was young, maybe eight
00:25:23We'd heard a noise outside and there was a fight
00:25:27Like one guy was being held on the ground and the other was punching him in the face
00:25:32And there was just something that happened in my body that was like alive
00:25:38And it wasn't fear
00:25:42It was a fascination in the capacity for these people to be doing that
00:25:50I think violence and sex live in very close proximity in our body
00:25:57When words fail and that kind of animalistic drive happens
00:26:04And I wanted to find a way to explore it
00:26:16You met with the actors yesterday
00:26:18I did
00:26:19What happened?
00:26:20So with Sarah specifically it seems that like there's a couple of things going on there
00:26:25She doesn't want to do nudes, she doesn't want to do buttocks, she doesn't want to expose breasts or nipples
00:26:30Across the board, like all three scenes?
00:26:33Across the board, all three scenes, yeah
00:26:35She is open to like a kind of sternum and cleavage, right?
00:26:42So skirting around that
00:26:44What about touch, like him touching her underclothes?
00:26:48Hit breasts? No, buttocks no, pelvis no
00:26:52She seems to be a little overwhelmed with the idea of simulating sex with both of them
00:26:58In terms of Albert, he is very open to, you know, story-wise whatever comes up engaging with
00:27:06With Scout, but also he's fine kissing with Billy, he's fine touching with Billy
00:27:14If we wanted to like look at simulated oral sex, Billy to Luke
00:27:20He's like, maybe he's open to receiving that if that's where we go
00:27:25And Tom, he's happy with Billy and Scout engaging sex, Billy and Luke
00:27:30Simulating sex he's open to, kissing, touching
00:27:34Okay, well look, okay, here's where we're at
00:27:37It seems like the boys are willing to mix it up and play some games
00:27:41And we can simulate some stuff there and they're okay
00:27:44Say it was a dice game, like if the dice lands on a two
00:27:47And it means that Luke's got to kiss Billy
00:27:49Yeah
00:27:50And Scout's going...
00:27:51And then Billy's got to remove his trousers
00:27:54Yeah
00:27:55And then he removes his trousers and her eyes are like goggle-eyed at what is revealed

00:45:14tomorrow I mean there's a plethora of emotions that come up and are triggered when you delve into the
00:45:23the world of desire maybe it's like a deep-seated societal thing and I'm kind of just realizing this
00:45:34now I'm working it out now but I don't feel like my sexuality belongs to me so it's hard for me to portray it
00:45:44on screen so I've been doing a bit of research looking into sex scenes and it kind of leads me to
00:45:54porn sites they've taken famous sex scenes out of context once you create a piece of film it's there
00:46:04forever so I really want to make sure that the scenes that we shoot in tightrope are justified and
00:46:11hopefully I don't psych myself out with my nerves
00:46:41look it has been an interesting week it's been challenging on a few levels as a as a writer you
00:46:52know having to deal with I guess changes it's taken a while to sort of craft a third scene because we
00:47:00had some vision something a little more risque a little different to what we've ended up with you
00:47:06know I was up until I don't know what time last night finishing it off and we're shooting it tomorrow
