00:48Let's see Cho, let's go.
00:50Molly, up and up.
00:53Yeah!
00:54She's Molly, up and up.
00:57Come on, let's go!
00:59Molly, up and up.
01:02She's Molly, up and up.
01:06And once you're all done mixing up your pickled muck duck salmon spread, you just put it on a cracker and enjoy.
01:24That's fantastic, Chef Molly.
01:27Yum, yum.
01:28You'll learn how to make more amazing recipes next time on The Athabascan Chef.
01:38Mmm, this really is so good, Molly.
01:44I could eat the whole bowl.
01:47Weren't you girls making that spread for the culture fair tomorrow night?
01:52Uh, maybe just one more, Mom?
01:55A chef needs to test their food.
01:56Okay, one more.
01:59And I might test one too.
02:05Huh?
02:07Suki, no!
02:10Sorry, Suki doesn't make the best cooking assistant.
02:14Well, how about you put that somewhere safe and come say hi to your Lola Miranda.
02:21Lola Miranda!
02:23My grandma's calling all the way from the Philippines, Molly.
02:26Come meet her.
02:27Kamusta kayo, girls?
02:31Vira, your Hindu tells me you're cooking for a culture festival.
02:35A big one for school.
02:37We share dances and food and music.
02:40Oh, speaking of, the Sinuquan Festival is in a few days, and I have to go teach dance practice.
02:49Paalam!
02:50Mwah!
02:52Suki!
02:53What's a Sinuquan Festival?
02:58It was my favorite time of the year when I was growing up in the Philippines.
03:02Look here.
03:05The Sinuquan Festival is a special Kapampangan celebration.
03:10Linda took me when we first got married.
03:12So much dancing and great food.
03:17Kap...
03:17Kap...
03:19Kapampangan.
03:21Kapampangan.
03:23What's Kapampangan?
03:26That's what we are.
03:27Just like here, where there are different indigenous groups all over Alaska,
03:32there are different indigenous groups all over the world, including the Philippines.
03:37So I'm Kapampangan like mom, and Gwich'in Athabaskan like dad.
03:43That's so cool!
03:45Ah, I sure miss those Sinuquan Festivals.
03:52Mmm, thanks for making salmon spread, girls.
03:56Good food really makes the fare.
03:59Are you okay, Vera?
04:00I was thinking about my mom and how she misses Sinuquan Festivals back in the Philippines.
04:08I wish we had them here.
04:10That would be awesome if we did.
04:13Hey, what if we added a piece of the Sinuquan Festival to our culture fair tomorrow night?
04:19And it could be a surprise for my mom!
04:22What a great idea!
04:24What could we add in?
04:25You know how you were saying food makes the fare?
04:29What if we made some Sinuquan Festival food?
04:33Yes!
04:34This is a job for the Athabaskan Chefs!
04:38Shouldn't it be the Filipino Athabaskan Chefs?
04:44The Phillybaskan Chefs!
04:48What kind of foods do they have at Sinuquan Festivals?
04:51Hmm, I don't know.
04:53I've actually never been to one.
04:55Then let's find out!
04:58Okay.
05:01Sinuquan Festival food.
05:04That all looks amazing!
05:07Wait!
05:08What about lumpia?
05:10Mom makes amazing lumpia!
05:13This says lumpia was created in the Philippines when many cultures came together.
05:18There are lots of different ways to make it.
05:21I'd like to make one just like my mom's, but I've never made it without her.
05:26Do you remember the ingredients?
05:28Not exactly.
05:30My mom has the ingredients on a recipe card.
05:32But it's at home.
05:33But it's at home.
05:35And so is she.
05:37Then maybe the Phillybaskan Chefs need to become the Phillybaskan Secret Agents!
05:44All right, Agent Mabre.
05:55Our goal is to get to the recipe card without being detected.
05:59It's in that small, wooden recipe box.
06:05The coast is clear.
06:06Okay, let's move!
06:08Where is it?
06:31Ha ha ha ha ha ha.
06:34Hm, hm, hm, hm.
06:38Huh?
06:39Hmm.
06:43Oh.
06:46Ah.
07:02Ew.
07:03That was close.
07:05I'll get the recipe box.
07:08You look out for my mom.
07:23Hurry.
07:27I think I hear someone coming.
07:33Got it.
07:35Yes, we did it.
07:42What you up to, kids?
07:48Surprising your mom with this lumpia is a great idea.
07:52I know most of these ingredients, but there are two I don't recognize.
07:56Lola Miranda's Sukang Ma'anghang and something called special ingredient.
08:04Special ingredient?
08:06What could that be?
08:09Your mother never told me.
08:11It's a secret.
08:12What about Lola Miranda's Sukang Ma'anghang?
08:16That's a super good dipping sauce.
08:21I don't know how to make it, but I know who does.
08:27Sure, I can help girls.
08:29I'll send you my recipe for my Sukang Ma'anghang right now.
08:34Salamat, Lola.
08:37Do you know what this special ingredient is?
08:41Hmm.
08:42Ay, sorry.
08:44I don't.
08:45I make my lumpia with carabao.
08:48What's carabao?
08:50It's a water buffalo here in the Philippines.
08:53Well, that can't be the special ingredient.
08:57There are no water buffaloes here.
08:59I bet it's something from Alaska.
09:03Huh?
09:04That could be a lot of things.
09:07Let's experiment with lumpia recipes until we figure it out.
09:11How hard can it be?
09:19Oh, wow.
09:21This is actually pretty hard.
09:22Mm, at least it's a really tasty job.
09:27Yeah, but none of them tastes like Mom's lumpia.
09:30We tried smoked salmon, canned salmon, salmon fillets, half-dried salmon.
09:35Lingonberries, blueberries, salmonberries, dried mousse, and fried mousse.
09:40I don't think I could eat another bite.
09:44We can't give up now.
09:46Come on, there must be something we're missing.
09:48Well, all of these have the ingredients from your mom's recipe card.
09:55So, what could that special ingredient be?
09:58I bet we've used every ingredient in our lumpia except carabao.
10:02You need some caribou?
10:03No, not caribou, Grandpa.
10:08Carabao.
10:09It's the kind of water buffalo in the Philippines.
10:12Oh, well, I don't know about carabao, but if you want any caribou, I've got plenty.
10:19Linda always gets a whole bunch of caribou sausage from me every fall.
10:25Caribou, carabao.
10:29I wonder if...
10:30Grandpa, do you think we could get some caribou sausage pretty quick?
10:34Well, I think I could be convinced.
10:38If I were allowed to have a lumpia.
10:41Or two.
10:42Okay, Mom.
10:57Open your eyes.
10:59Wow.
11:01Look at all this lumpia.
11:03Did you do all this?
11:06Not just me.
11:07Dad helped, Lola Miranda, Grandpa Nat, and...
11:12The Philly Baskets Chefs!
11:14And we made something special just for you.
11:22This tastes just like my special lumpia.
11:27How did you figure this out?
11:29We used lots of sources.
11:32We read information online, we looked at your recipe,
11:35and there was a lot of trial and error.
11:38You were saying how much you missed the Siniguan festivals,
11:45so we tried to bring a little bit of one here.
11:49It worked!
11:51Nothing reminds me of my childhood like this taste.
11:55Mmm!
11:56I don't know that much about Kapampangan festivals yet, Indu,
12:00but I'd love to learn.
12:03And I would love to teach you, Anak.
12:09Hey, everyone!
12:10Molly here to answer your questions about life in Alaska.
12:14Hugh from Portland, Oregon asks,
12:16Can you tell me more about Philly Baskin food?
12:19Sure!
12:19Let's see what my friends are cooking.
12:21Kamusta, Molly!
12:23I'm Manu.
12:24I'm Laka.
12:25And this is Kalu.
12:26And our little sister, Tala.
12:28This is my grandma.
12:29We call her Lola, which means grandma.
12:32We are Filipino and Kuyukon Athabascan.
12:36Right now, we're at Lola's house,
12:38and it's on Dena'ina land.
12:40My Lola's going to teach us how to make salmon lumpia.
12:44Lumpia is a traditional Filipino dish,
12:46and the salmon is from our Athabascan culture.
12:49During the summer, we fish, we cut the salmon,
12:53and whatever's left on the bone, we scrape for lumpia.
12:55That way, we don't waste any bit of salmon.
12:58The first step to making lumpia
13:00is to get all the ingredients.
13:02The carrots and salmon.
13:05Onions, breadcrumbs, eggs.
13:09And mix.
13:11And mix and mix and mix!
13:14Next, we wrap the filling in kind of a rice paper.
13:19We're going to see who can roll the lumpia the fastest.
13:26Sa-da-la wa-ba-do-go.
13:30Done.
13:31What's up here?
13:31Perfect.
13:34You cook it on the pan.
13:35Sizzle, sizzle, sizzle.
13:37Then you need to flip the lumpia over
13:39so one side doesn't get more cooked than the other.
13:42We know that they're ready
13:44because they get hard and crunchy.
13:46Woo!
13:47Five-second roll.
13:49And now the Lumpiat's done.
13:51We're going to have a picnic outside.
13:57Masarap.
14:00Really good.
14:01Bye, Molly.
14:03Bye, Moni.
14:05Masi cho.
14:06Thanks for asking, and see you next time.
14:10Ladybug Sleepover.
14:17That was heavy.
14:32Why did Auntie Midge order all this gardening stuff?
14:35It's the middle of winter.
14:37Phew.
14:39She's getting the greenhouse ready for spring.
14:42That's the last of it.
14:43Thanks for the help.
14:45Molly!
14:47Vera's here!
14:51Suki, come on, girl!
15:10You brought in Gigan Ghouls?
15:13Of course.
15:14It's the perfect game for a sleepover.
15:18Explore ancient ruins.
15:20Discover treasure.
15:22But watch out for monsters.
15:26Monsters?
15:27This looks super spooky.
15:30I can't wait.
15:31I can't wait.
15:32I can't wait.
15:33Oh.
15:33Haha.
15:34Yeah.
15:35Me neither.
15:37Sigh.
15:38Sigh.
15:51Congratulations.
15:52You find a red bead necklace.
15:55Ooh.
15:56That'll protect me from mummies.
15:59Your turn, Jake.
16:06Oh.
16:07Why do I always land on the monster card?
16:10Oh, no.
16:13It says there's a bad duck.
16:17That's a monster?
16:18A bad duck?
16:20What will it do?
16:22Quack at us?
16:23Are you sure that's what it says?
16:25Oh, I read it wrong.
16:30It doesn't say bad duck.
16:32It says bad luck.
16:34Ngi.
16:35You encounter a giant two-headed cave worm.
16:39Lose two turns.
16:42A two-headed cave worm.
16:45Definitely scarier than a bad duck.
16:51Ah!
16:51It's not that scary.
16:56No!
16:57The spider!
16:58Right there!
17:00Ooh.
17:01I love spiders.
17:03If I had my spider book, we could identify it.
17:06We could find out what it eats.
17:08It was about to eat my arm!
17:11Hey, kids.
17:12I'm replacing a broken fuse, so I'll have to shut the power off.
17:16Okay.
17:16Merci.
17:18So, if you find yourself suddenly sitting in the dark,
17:21you'll know why.
17:23The dark?
17:25It's okay, Jake.
17:26We have plenty of flashlights.
17:29But what about...
17:30You know what?
17:31Sneaking around trying to bite us.
17:33Oh, is Grandmother Spider trying to play with you?
17:37I can help.
17:38Sorry, Grandmother.
17:45But you were not invited to this party.
17:47I'll take you somewhere safe.
17:49Don't you want protective gloves?
17:51I think I'll be okay.
17:53Hodeidrel are our friends.
17:57Okay.
17:58Molly's turn.
18:00Wait.
18:01What about the flashlights?
18:02It could go dark any second.
18:04Oh, right.
18:06Come with me.
18:12Everything is sort of creepy at me, isn't it?
18:17I don't think so.
18:21But I guess I'm used to it.
18:24Ooh.
18:24You have a book about bugs.
18:27Maybe that spider is in it.
18:29Was your mom joking when she called it Grandmother Spider?
18:32That's what she calls them sometimes.
18:34There are lots of stories about Deetsu Gua Deidrelle.
18:48What's wrong?
18:50A spider flew right at me.
18:52There it is.
18:53I don't think spiders fly.
18:58Yeah.
18:59See?
19:00It's a ladybug.
19:03They're harmless.
19:05Not when they swoop out of the sky and go for your neck.
19:09Things are always a bit spookier in the dark.
19:13Here.
19:13I found flashlights for us.
19:15Now let's get back to our game.
19:17Wow, this book tells you everything about ladybugs.
19:23Did you know that ladybugs eat aphids?
19:26What are aphids?
19:27They're these little bugs that ate all of Auntie Midget's tomato plants last year.
19:33She was so mad.
19:35She should get ladybugs.
19:37People buy them for their gardens and they're sent through the mail.
19:40Buying bugs to eat other bugs?
19:42I will never be a gardener.
19:44Jake, ladybugs are friendly.
19:48Here, hold out your hand.
19:50Nuh-uh.
19:51Just try it.
19:53It'll be okay.
19:55Okay.
20:03Hey!
20:04It tickles.
20:06See?
20:08That wasn't so bad.
20:12Jake, your flashlight is going out.
20:19Not good.
20:21What do we do?
20:22We have spare batteries in my mom's office.
20:26It's great that you didn't freak out about the ladybug.
20:30I didn't, did I?
20:32I guess they're not really that scary after all.
20:34Wait!
20:42Stop!
20:43We have to go back!
20:58Suki is still in there.
21:00There's no way I'm going back.
21:03The power went out!
21:06We can't leave Suki behind.
21:09Come on!
21:10All right, here's the plan.
21:21I'll run in and grab Suki.
21:24I'll run in and grab the batteries.
21:26And I'll run in and run away.
21:29Okay.
21:30One, two, three!
21:34Suki, don't eat the ladybug!
21:37I got the batteries!
21:42Come on!
21:43Come on!
21:44Where did all those ladybugs come from?
21:57Everything we unloaded from the airplane was gardening supplies.
22:01I wonder if Auntie Midge bought the ladybugs for her tomatoes and they got loose.
22:06You're going to have to seal up the door and never use that room again.
22:10Wait a minute.
22:12The bug book has something that might help us.
22:15Oh yeah, here it is.
22:17How to make a ladybug trap.
22:22Get a plastic bottle, cut off the top and put it upside down into the bottom to create a fumble.
22:29A fumble?
22:31What's a fumble?
22:33A fumble is when you drop a football by accident.
22:36Or a tray of cupcakes.
22:38Are you sure that's what it says?
22:40Oh, I read it wrong.
22:44It's to create a funnel, not a fumble.
22:49That makes more sense.
22:51Let's do it!
22:56They go through the funnel and then they can't get out again.
23:01And ladybugs are attracted to light.
23:04Now, who should set the trap?
23:07Anybody but me.
23:08I don't want to go back in there.
23:10Me neither.
23:12That only leaves one option.
23:20There.
23:21Phew!
23:22Now we turn the lights off and leave it alone and go play our game.
23:26Monster card?
23:35Again?
23:38Bad luck.
23:39Engi.
23:40You encounter a swamp creature.
23:43Lose one turn.
23:44I used to think these monsters were scary.
23:47But after facing a real insect invasion, this game is not that bad.
23:56There go the lights again.
23:59It was kind of fun being scared by the ladybugs.
24:02Yeah.
24:03It was fun, wasn't it?
24:05You know what would be really scary?
24:09Checking the trap right now.
24:11Going back down there?
24:15On purpose?
24:18Let's do it!
24:20Yeah!
24:20All right!
24:21Let's do it!
24:24Wow!
24:25It worked!
24:27I'm fascinated.
24:29And kind of creeped out at the same time.
24:33Let's bring them to Auntie Midge tomorrow.
24:36She'll be so glad we caught them all.
24:39Oops.
24:40One got away.
24:41I'll put it back.
24:43Actually, could I see it?
24:45Great sleepover, Molly.
24:56Yeah.
24:57I see Joe.
24:58Good night.
25:01Good night.
25:03Good night.
25:06Good night, ladybug.
25:07Good night.
