00:29:12You still working at the pizza parlor?
00:29:16Yep.
00:29:18How's the, um, football going?
00:29:23Pretty good, actually.
00:29:25Um, we're third in the state at the minute, so...
00:29:29Yeah.
00:29:32You planning on making 11 from that?
00:29:35Well, I play for the love of it, to be honest with you.
00:29:41Uh, but there's some big league scouts who come from time to time, so...
00:29:46You never know.
00:29:58Reassuring.
00:30:01Thanks.
00:30:11I just wanna be left alone.
00:30:13Can't they leave me alone?
00:30:15Why don't they just leave me alone?
00:30:20Ah!
00:30:21Ah!

00:30:38You hear me?!
00:30:39I just want to be left alone.
00:30:41Can they leave me alone?
00:30:43Why don't they just leave me alone?
00:30:59You are going to keep it together.
00:31:01You hear me?
00:31:09Look, Bob. What do you think?
00:31:19New dress?
00:31:21Yeah, isn't it beautiful?
00:31:23How much did it cost?
00:31:26I got it on sale for 30 bucks.
00:31:29It's a little steep.
00:31:31Is this for the church benefit?
00:31:34Yeah.
00:31:35It's a little figure-hugging.
00:31:38Don't I have a nice figure?
00:31:42But is it appropriate for the pastor and congregation to see it?
00:31:46I don't think it's inappropriate.
00:31:50I think I look nice.
00:32:05You know I love you, don't you?
00:32:08Yes.
00:32:10Do you love me?
00:32:12Of course I do.
00:32:15Then please, respect my wishes.
00:32:19Find a more modest dress for the benefit.
00:32:21Okay?
00:32:27Fine.
00:32:29What was he doing?
00:32:41I don't know.
00:32:42He was kind of freaking out.
00:32:44He was pacing back and forth, agitated as hell.
00:32:47Then he threw a magazine across the room.
00:32:49That magazine?
00:32:50I don't know.
00:32:51I couldn't really see it.
00:32:52But he seemed pretty mad about it.
00:32:56He must have seen it when I dropped in the kitchen.
00:32:59Gone and bought a copy.
00:33:01But we don't know anything for sure.
00:33:03You know?
00:33:04I mean think about it.
00:33:05If we took this to the cops, they'd say that the evidence was pretty thin.
00:33:08I know that.
00:33:17Oh God.
00:33:18What?
00:33:19You got that look.
00:33:22What look?
00:33:23You know that look you get when you're going to ask me to do something that I don't want
00:33:27to do?
00:33:28Every Sunday, Clark and his wife go to church.
00:33:30Yeah?
00:33:31They're out of the house for like three hours.
00:33:33They leave at 8.30 and come back around midday.
00:33:36Oh no, Steph.
00:33:38I am not breaking into his house.
00:33:41I didn't ask you to.
00:33:43I didn't say anything.
00:33:44Okay.
00:33:45What do you want me to do?
00:33:50Break into his house.
00:33:51I knew it!
00:33:52I knew it!
00:33:53You know breaking and entering is a felony, right?
00:33:56I could go to jail.
00:33:58He wouldn't have to actually break in.
00:34:00His wife leaves his spare key under a plant pot next to the front door.
00:34:04Okay, so if, if I do this, what am I supposed to be looking for?
00:34:10Any evidence that proves Clark is John List.
00:34:14Oh, come on Steph.
00:34:16You really think he's going to keep incriminating lying around all these years later?
00:34:20No, but there might be an older photo.
00:34:23If we had a picture with a clear resemblance, it would help convince the cops.
00:34:27Yeah, but how are we going to explain how we got it?
00:34:31I mean, surely the cops are going to know that I broke into his house.
00:34:35What are they going to care more about?
00:34:37Busting you for stealing a photo or catching some guy who murdered his whole family?
00:34:45I can't believe I'm going to do this.
00:34:48I must be crazy.
00:34:49Thanks for meeting me today, Miss Phillips. I know you're very busy.
00:35:00Please, call me Ellen.
00:35:02Ellen.
00:35:04The show you produce, it's intriguing.
00:35:07I've never seen anything quite like it before.
00:35:09Well, I brought it to the network.
00:35:12But it's really John Wesley's brainchild.
00:35:15You heard what happened to his kid, right?
00:35:17He was murdered, wasn't he?
00:35:19That's right. His young son.
00:35:22John noticed when dealing with the media how quickly they could get information out there.
00:35:28The TV coverage helped catch his son's killer.
00:35:32If it's used in the right way, the media can be a powerful weapon.
00:35:36It can.
00:35:37Of course, if I'm being honest, I've got to admit the media's motives are hardly noble.
00:35:43Everyone who works in this business understands if it bleeds, it leads.
00:35:49Why do you think people are so fascinated by murder?
00:35:56Killers tantalize people.
00:36:00Like traffic accidents or natural disasters.
00:36:06The actions of a killer are horrible.
00:36:10But the public just can't look away.
00:36:13So, did you get a chance to have a look over the details of the List case?
00:36:17I did.
00:36:18And will you consider featuring it on the show?
00:36:21It's the kind of taboo crime that intrigues and horrifies people.
00:36:28But the problem is, it took place so long ago.
00:36:33You have one picture that's over 20 years old.
00:36:37The guy probably looks very different now.
00:36:41I'd have to question whether or not we'd get the audience response we need to make an identification.
00:36:50But it's worth a shot, isn't it?
00:36:53I don't think the network is going to want to blot our copybook by featuring cases which are unlikely to have a positive outcome.
00:37:06So what are you saying?
00:37:09I'm saying it's a pass for now.
00:37:13But if you get any additional information that could improve the chances of an identification,
00:37:21then we'll certainly consider it for future broadcast.
00:37:27It's time.
00:37:52You're right!
00:37:53Yeah.
00:37:54I mean, all of you have left theotto popsicle.
00:37:55Unless you're late at the Crossingeries of the MotikWorld with your execution and boss priorities.
00:37:59Pull back together and are we?
00:38:00Yes.
00:38:01Itrator Morantan-
00:42:38We're right back.
00:43:08We're right back.
00:43:38We're right back.
00:44:08We can't feature everybody, but perhaps sometime in the future.
00:44:11Well, you see, time is a factor here, sir.
00:44:13Look, Detective, that's just the way it works here.
00:44:16We have to go through the channels, you know?
00:44:19I know what happened to me, I know it's a matter of public record, yeah, well, it's a matter of public record, unfortunately.
00:44:29John List, John List, they're all right, well, it's a matter of public record.
00:44:38I'm 13 and 15, his daughter too, Patricia, she was 16, I've been working this case for
00:44:51nearly two decades now, my department shut me down and I'm having to do it on my own
00:44:56time, all because I am still haunted by that crime scene, three beautiful children, snuffed
00:45:07out by a man who was supposed to love and protect them, they deserve justice, Mr. Wesley, come
00:45:17on, looks like you can use a drink, it was July back in 81, Aaron was our first and only
00:45:28son at the time, my wife Debra and I were living the American dream, had a great job in real
00:45:35estate, beautiful home, Debra always wanted to be a mother, so when Aaron came along, our
00:45:44lives were complete, and one day we were in a department store browsing, Aaron was with
00:45:52us, laughing, running in and out of the aisles like he always did, couldn't have turned our
00:45:59back on him for more than a minute, he was gone, knowing that he was out there alone, frightened
00:46:07and without us, I felt so helpless, two weeks later they found his body in a river, opportunist,
00:46:22abduction, murder, our lives completely changed in a matter of minutes, the day they found Aaron's
00:46:34body, my heart broke into a million pieces, years later I'm still trying to put it back
00:46:41together, I'm sorry, I think what hurt even more was the fact that the local police department's
00:46:49response was so poor, I mean with all due respect to you detective, they didn't know their head
00:46:56from their ass, I can only imagine if they'd been a little bit more decisive, we could have
00:47:03found Aaron before that animal took his life, well if it had come to my department, it would
00:47:09have been a different story, I appreciate that, but when the media got involved I realized that
00:47:16we could create this wide awareness and also restored my faith in human nature at a very dark
00:47:25time, we received over 40,000 letters from all over the country, people wishing us well,
00:47:33sympathizing, sharing their own stories, and I knew that if I could get information out there
00:47:40on a national scale, and galvanize the public into being directly involved with finding those
00:47:46criminals, we could solve cases that would generally never stand a chance.
00:47:52This is why I came to you, Mr. Wesley, I don't share a bloodline with the List children, but
00:47:59but in death, I've got to know them so well, I talk to everybody about Frederick and John Jr.
00:48:07and Patricia, I learned about all the things they loved, dreams, aspirations.
00:48:19If I had a court list, then there'd be closure, but as long as he's still out there, this will
00:48:24never be over, those children will never be at peace.
00:48:29I know, it took us years to find Aaron's murderer.
00:48:36Closure is important.
00:48:38It really is.
00:48:40I've been chasing it for 18 years.
00:48:44Look, Frank, I can't promise anything.
00:48:48I'm usually a servant to the network and these kind of things, but...
00:48:55I'll do my best.
00:48:58Try and get you on the show.
00:49:01Thank you, John.
00:49:03I appreciate that.
00:49:19So what do you want to do next?
00:49:21I don't know.
00:49:23Well, one thing's for sure, I'm not sneaking around his house anymore.
00:49:27It's too risky.
00:49:29I know.
00:49:31I'm so sorry.
00:49:33I'll live.
00:49:35Maybe I should just call the cops.
00:49:39At least then that would shine a spotlight on him.
00:49:42Maybe if his IDs don't check out, they'll discover who he really is.
00:49:46And if we're wrong, they'll bust us for wasting police time.
00:49:50You don't still have doubts, do you?
00:49:54I don't know.
00:49:56We're gonna need more than just suspicion before we call the cops.
00:50:03I know.
00:50:04We've been through this.
00:50:13Look, I'm gonna go home.
00:50:14I'm pretty tired.
00:50:16Okay.
00:50:19You come by tomorrow?
00:50:21Sure.
00:50:26Alright.
00:50:27I need to wear this.
00:50:28I'm gonna wear this.
00:50:33I will use this.
00:50:38I'm gonna wear this.
00:50:41I will put it all for me.
00:50:45You should do it.
00:50:47It's pretty good.
00:50:48It's good it.
00:50:49It's really great.
00:50:50I know.
00:50:51I'm really good.
00:50:52You know.
00:50:53You know.
00:50:54You know.
00:50:55god damn it profanity isn't necessary young man what the hell are you doing in my car
00:51:05i think it's time we had a little chat when you needed to break into my car to do that
00:51:10i guess this makes us even
00:51:12what do you mean the postman when i left he was right there on the model when i came back he was
00:51:22on the floor unless this town experienced its first ever earthquake while i was out
00:51:26it's tough to see how that could have happened
00:51:29i know that you and your girlfriend stephanie have taken quite an interest in me lately
00:51:38no no please let's level with each other
00:51:42i don't know why you've been snooping around maybe i don't want to know but let me tell you one thing
00:51:51i value my privacy as i'm sure you value your own we all have a right to it i'll respect yours if
00:52:03if you respect mine and here's the point to remember you may be watching me
00:52:11but i'm also watching you
00:52:18hey frank sorry i'm late damn production
00:52:48meeting ran over as usual not a problem so this is the guy i was telling you about
00:52:52dave brenton good to meet you you too
00:52:54so you're a sculptor it's actually auto d-dact forensic artist
00:53:12you'll have to forgive me dave i'm a little behind the times what exactly does your job entail
00:53:17facial reconstructions of fugitives based on outdated pictures you know aging a sculpted
00:53:24bust to show how they may look in the present day see frank here's the problem you have that
00:53:30photograph that we have of list is as old as hell viewers need to see what he looks like today
00:53:34in order to make a positive id that's where dave comes in he fabricates that age progressed bust
00:53:41so that our viewer gets a pretty good indication of what list might look like today massively improve
00:53:47your chance of a positive id it sounds terrific but but we can't be certain of what list looks like
00:53:53now so it's going to be kind of speculative isn't it it'll be based on a lot of research
00:53:57now create some various key questions where does he live the city the suburbs and what kind of clothes
00:54:04does he wear i think he would wear a pair of thick dark brown glasses why do you think that i think he
00:54:11would want to look more astute you know more in control than he really was well it could be you've
00:54:16got the right handle on this guy
00:54:21the disappearance of the daughter uh the amber alert going out for her uh the discovery of her body in her
00:54:28father's home and then the arrest of this man he was arrested after somebody had heard god that's awful
00:54:36bob what you hear that on the tv a father killed his own daughter
00:54:45isn't that awful
00:54:47uh there are the uh jurisdiction involved with uh yeah that's that's terrible
00:54:53and then they noticed officers noticed what on earth could drive a man to kill his own flesh and blood
00:55:01maybe she disappointed him
00:55:04a self-inflicted gunshot wound now this is the situation all of this uh involving uh his daughter
00:55:10uh 11 year old korea
00:55:13there have been a tremendous community outpouring uh for her uh and the investigation
00:55:19uh for her
00:55:20hey
00:55:34hey
00:55:36you're okay
00:55:41not really
00:55:44i know you're having a tough time at the moment and
00:56:03i've been mocking her so much i haven't been here as much as i should have
00:56:10i it's fine

01:00:12Well, I find that most things start and end with the family, one way or another.
01:00:19Wow.
01:00:20Quite the attention to detail there, Dave.
01:00:24Wow.
01:00:25Quite the attention to detail there, Dave.
01:00:33Great job.
01:00:34Really intricate work.
01:00:37Question is, how close is this to how this looks now?
01:00:43Show tapes tomorrow.
01:00:44We'll find out soon enough.
01:00:50We'll find out soon enough.
01:01:5815 million people are going to be watching. Nothing to be nervous about.
01:02:01You know how to put a mind to these.
01:02:04You'll be fine. Just follow my lead.
01:02:07The important thing to remember is that maybe one of those 15 million people know where John List is.
01:02:14And finally nailed that son of a ****.
01:02:16Come on.
01:02:22Hello?
01:02:23Hey, it's me.
01:02:25You okay?
01:02:27I was going to ask you the same thing.
01:02:29How come you didn't come over tonight?
01:02:31I had football practice.
01:02:34It's Wednesday.
01:02:36Isn't practice usually on Thursday?
01:02:38Uh, they moved it.
01:02:42Don't lie to me, Danny.
01:02:45Alright, you want me to say it?
01:02:47Look, I'm kind of freaked out.
01:02:50I mean, that guy broke into my car and he threatened me.
01:02:53It's okay to be scared.
01:02:55I am too.
01:02:57I just don't know what to do.
01:02:58I mean, that **** said he was watching me.
01:03:01He's watching both of us.
01:03:02So, what are we going to do?
01:03:09I don't know.
01:03:10But I do know that being together is better than being apart.
01:03:15Makes sense.
01:03:17Or to put it bluntly, if you still care about me at all, then get over here.
01:03:24I do still care about you.
01:03:27I love you, Steph.
01:03:29Nothing has changed on that front.
01:03:32Then stick with me on this.
01:03:36I will.
01:03:40The greatest element of being a teacher is not just what happens inside the classroom,
01:03:45but all these opportunities are outside the classroom.
01:03:50Hey, Steph.
01:03:52You want to watch some TV with your old man?
01:03:55Danny and Melissa are coming over.
01:03:58That's later.
01:03:59Come and watch some TV with your old man.
01:04:02It's good to get out of the bedroom for a while, no?
01:04:05Yeah, I guess you're right.
01:04:07Yeah.
01:04:08What are you watching?
01:04:10Ah, nothing much.
01:04:11Just waiting for this show to come on.
01:04:14The one where they track down America's most wanted criminals.
01:04:17Have you ever seen it?
01:04:19No.
01:04:19Oh, it's pretty interesting.
01:04:23I was going to make a sandwich.
01:04:25You want one?
01:04:28Yeah, sure.
01:04:29All right.
01:04:30Okay.
01:04:31Yeah.
01:04:32Good evening.
01:04:40I'm John Wesley.
01:04:42Those of you who are regular viewers know that we highlight mostly recent cases.
01:04:48But tonight, we're turning back the clock 18 years to November the 9th, 1971.
01:04:57When a seemingly mild-mannered accountant and churchgoer, John List.
01:05:03Dad?
01:05:03What's wrong?
01:05:08Look, they're talking about John List.
01:05:10Remember I showed you that magazine?
01:05:15The guy you think is living across the street?
01:05:18It's not funny, Dad.
01:05:19Look.
01:05:20The list has been on the clock for 18 years.
01:05:23We hope that someone out there tonight may know where he is.
01:05:27We consulted a number of profilers over those years,
01:05:30and they speculate that List may have obsessive compulsive disorder
01:05:34and other associative disorders.
01:05:38Control is very important to this man.
01:05:41Control can be ever so subtle,
01:05:43often hidden behind the pretense of help or advice,
01:05:47a suggestion, or even a joke.
01:05:50Maybe there's someone out there tonight
01:05:52who may recognize this key characteristic.
01:05:55Interesting.
01:05:56I know you mentioned that List went to great pains to cover his tracks.
01:06:00He removed himself from all-family photographs
01:06:03and wasn't particularly a social person.
01:06:06So it was very difficult for you to obtain a photograph
01:06:10for identification purposes.
01:06:12That's right.
01:06:13We had one very, very old photograph to go on.
01:06:15But now, thanks to the work of the esteemed forensic artist David Brenton,
01:06:20we have a bust of List's head,
01:06:22which we have age-progressed
01:06:24and should be able to give the viewers a...
01:06:26Holy shit!
01:06:29I told you, Dad.
01:06:30I told you.
01:06:31Oh!
01:06:32Oh!
01:06:32Oh!
01:06:34We need to call the cops.
01:06:36Hold it.
01:06:36Let's not get hasty here.
01:06:37What else are we going to do?
01:06:38Oh!
01:07:01Uh, maybe I could go over to him and talk to him, make sure it's really him.
01:07:11Dad, are you crazy? He's a mass murderer.
01:07:31Okay, okay. Let me call the cops. Yeah, let them deal with it.
01:07:51Okay, okay.
01:08:01Dad?
01:08:11Dad, the power's out.
01:08:26Dad?
01:08:31Dad?
01:08:32Dad?
01:08:32Dad?
01:08:33Dad?
01:08:34Dad?
01:08:35Dad?
01:08:36Dad?
01:08:37Dad?
01:08:38Dad?
01:08:39Dad?
01:08:40Dad?
01:08:41Dad?
01:08:42Dad?
01:08:43Dad?
01:08:44Dad?
01:08:45Dad?
01:08:46Dad?
01:08:47Dad?
01:08:48Dad?
01:08:49Dad?
01:08:50Dad?
01:08:51Dad?
01:08:52I just wanted to be left alone.
01:08:53You just couldn't leave me be, could you?
01:08:57You just had to keep snooping around, didn't you?
01:09:01Sorry.
01:09:02Shut up!
01:09:03I didn't want to come to this.
01:09:06But I have no choice.
01:09:09It's time to give you up to the Almighty.
01:09:12Ah!
01:09:13Ah!
01:09:14Ah!
01:09:15Ah!
01:09:42Thank you so much.
01:09:43Thank you, honey.
01:09:44Oh, my God.
01:09:45I was trying to get into theuli.
01:09:46I was trying to get you up here.
01:09:47I was trying to get my new
01:10:12Stephanie!
01:10:17Stephanie!
01:10:23Stephanie!
01:10:42Steph?
01:10:46Jimmy, hello?
01:10:50Maybe they went out.
01:10:54Steph struggles to get around, so why would she go out if she knew that we were coming over?
01:11:12He's still breathing.
01:11:16Look, um, go in there, call the cops, okay? I'm gonna make sure this stuff's alright. Yeah?
01:11:21Yeah.
01:11:26Oh, ****!
01:11:29Go, Mel, call the cops!
01:11:31Go! Go!
01:11:42You okay, kid?
01:11:51Yeah, yeah. Are you?
01:11:54Nothing. A few stitches and a couple of painkillers won't take care of.
01:12:11Steph?
01:12:18Hey!
01:12:19Hey!
01:12:20Hey!
01:12:21Hey!
01:12:22Hey!
01:12:23Hey!
01:12:24Hey!
01:12:26Hey!
01:12:28Hey, hey!
01:12:32Ah!
01:12:33Ooh!
01:12:34ζ₯!
01:12:35Dad!
01:12:36Oh
01:13:06Oh, s**t.

01:14:05Oh, s**t.
01:14:11Oh, s**t.
01:14:15Oh, s**t.
01:14:16Yeah.
01:14:18Yeah.
01:14:20I don't know.
01:14:50I don't know.
01:15:20You know, I've waited 18 years for this moment.
01:15:35For the chance to be face-to-face with you.
01:15:45To ask you how you could do it.
01:15:50The truth is, no answer you can give will help me sleep better at night.
01:15:57But what will help is knowing you're going to spend the rest of your days in an 8x9 cell.
01:16:06And that for every single one of those days you'll be looking over your shoulder in fear of vigilante justice at any moment.
01:16:16You'll finally know what it's like to feel the terror your family felt as you murdered them.
01:16:27And after all of that, you'll still have hell to look forward to.
